POSITIVE LIVING The right to be happy...

For the whole of your life you are an active vessel for life force / energy – positive and negative – to flow through. Every thought and word, action or intent produces an energy discharge that is carried directly to the planet and to the subject – person or matter – that you think of. This activity is automatic. It happens with or without you personally knowing. It requires no consent for it’s a natural function of our soul. Every soul is free. Each has free choice and free will. Each will invent the unfolding life story of their choosing. Nothing is set in stone before we personally make it so. Because of free will - the future is as pliable as plastic. The way your life will unfold will depend on your outlook, your needs, wants, emotions and personality. You are individual. You are powerful. You can create any reality you want to at any moment – all through thought content you are thinking. You are not a pawn; you are not life’s victim; what you choose to accept is not at the mercy of any other person, past or present. No one can totally control you. You have the freedom to will any version of your life, any story you want into being. Yet how often do you realise these things? The place you find yourself today is but a passing phase that’s playing out. Tomorrow things will shift and change again... Happiness is a choice. It is your birthright. Every day that you are here you can choose it – despite the many different ways that life presents. Not every thing you face is down to you, so there is little point in taking it on board. No one truth is the whole truth. Every situation has at least two sides, two versions, two facets. The one you choose will depend on where your mind is at that moment. First you feel, then you think, then you speak, act or respond. You are the will that will relay what you need and will accept - to larger life. The part you play within your story will vary too. At times you’ll be the victim; at times you’ll take the lead. You are both the hero and the writer of many things that you face. The reality you experience daily is up to you. Why would you ever think that it would be otherwise? To live a happy life is fairly easy. Happiness begins within – not without. It requires nothing specifically from you – just an open balanced

6 mkflyers central

mind and a peaceful outlook. You must choose it... What happens at the moment when you first glace at life around you? Do you feel first? Or do you automatically respond without choice or realisation? Do you take control of all your actions – or are you lead by your emotions, hormones, moods, brought on by what is happening at that moment – or even from what’s left over from something earlier? This a simple question that is important. How often do you step back and simply be? Life will carry on around you regardless – it doesn’t need your focus on every aspect all of the time. Life is there for your experience, enjoyment and expression. We are supposed to approach it all with a balanced, open mind. We are here to have ‘the adventure of a lifetime’. This ‘here and now’ is the adventure – not the chore. If you find that you’re not happy, work out why. Don’t make any drastic changes; just begin to shift your thoughts. Begin to notice how you feel, how you think, react, respond to what’s occurring. When you worry, stress or fret, you’ll get more to worry, stress or fret about – for those are the live instructions you’re feeding life. The very nature of free will means you’ll get back what you ask for or more simply, what you continuously consciously and subconsciously send out – though you might not realise... The books that I have written will help you understand this process easily. You’ll see how life and other people push your buttons, hold you back and you then react. You’ll see how you can alter many simple things and how life itself will effortlessly readjust around you in response. You’ll understand your pure potential that has waited patiently for understanding and recognition, for you are a powerful working force that creation will respond to precisely as you request through instructions given... Your Logo: Kia or Mercedes? Hands up if you own a BMW, Mercedes or Audi? Or indeed would like to. That’s a lot of us are reading with our hands in the air then. Why did you buy it or want to buy it? Surely you could have bought a Ford Focus or a Kia Cee’d instead? Why not? Essentially you are buying a thousand pounds worth of steel, some seats, a few buttons, a computer and an engine to drag it all along. But, that is not strictly true is it. There’s the history, the millions of refinements, the skill and excellence of the engineers and designers, the minute details honed in computer testing and then there is the badge, the marque, the Logo. The Logo...quite an emotive thing, remember that Olympic one? The one nobody liked, but ended up working beautifully when rolled out as a complete identity. Famously costing £400,000! Why did Sebastian Coe pay all that money for a Logo? He could have gone to any number of crowdsourcing websites, set up a Logo contest for £100 and spent the rest on medals. Well, he went to Woolf Olins, because they, like BMW, Mercedes or Audi, had the history, the skill and the expertise to deliver a product that in the end most of us were proud to be associated with. The London 2012 identity worked because you knew that wherever you were; inside a venue, in the Olympic park, even watching the TV at

8 mkflyers central

home, that you were at the games and you were a part of it...so yes, quite an emotive thing. What about the other end of the market? The Logo contest. Like the Kia Cee’d, you get what you pay for and for many people that will do. But consider this: how much design time does your £100 actually buy you? 2 or 3 hours at the most and in these logo contests the designers win approx. 10% of those they enter. So naturally they have got to submit a lot of work and do it very quickly to make even a small profit. This removes any consultation and the onus is on you to deliver a comprehensive brief and be able to feedback exactly what you want. The whole process from first draft to final Logo, that should involve briefing meetings and discussion, along with thought and process, is boiled down to a few emails between you and a faceless designer somewhere in cyberspace. As a general rule the more time you allow someone to spend on a project the more complete it will be, a bit like that Merc. Turning out of your drive each morning everyone will make assumptions about you, rightly or wrongly. And the same can be said about your Logo. It is often the first impression people get of your business and those assumptions can be difficult to change.

MP’s Diary

By Iain Stewart MP, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South

As many readers will know I try and visit as many of the schools in the constituency as possible and this month I to visit with teachers and pupils of Bow Brickhill Primary School. My visit this month coincided with World School Milk Day. World School Milk Day is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world. The goal of World School Milk Day is to celebrate children drinking milk in school. In the UK, around 1.5 million children receive free milk every day. For children under five their free milk is funded by the Department of Health.

While at the school I was delighted to help with handing out milk to the children as well as judging a picture competition. I was also very pleased to be invited to open the new LogNEC Competency Centre, located at Turing House in Wavendon Business Park. LogNEC is a delivery partnership between the Ministry of Defence and Boeing Defence UK. I am really pleased that Turing House will be the second Competency Centre to be opened as part of this partnership. This will see the migration of over 250 workers from four sites in Bicester, Worthy Down, Stanbridge & Witton, to this one central location in Milton Keynes. Many of the workers are re-locating to the area and I hope they will see what a great place Milton Keynes is to live. Once the Centre fully up and running it will be employing some 400 people and there are current

10 mkflyers central

vacancies and numerous jobs being advertised locally. This will provide a great boost to the local economy as well as add to our growing reputation for high tech research and development. The last month has also been the Party Conference season, with the Conservative Party Conference running from the 7th – 10th October in Birmingham. This is always a busy time for MPs and this year was no exception. I was invited to take part in a number of discussions and events, including the main transport event of conference; The Transport Hub ‘Big Interview’. I was part of a panel interviewed on all elements of transport policy. I was also able to take part in discussions with the Association of Train Operating Companies and Virgin Trains, much of which focused on the recent announcements around the West Cost Mainline Franchise process. As many readers will know, this is an issue I am taking a close interest in as a Member of the Transport Select Committee. The Committee will also be calling the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, to give evidence on the cancellation of the West Coast Main Line franchise competition on Wednesday 31 October. There have also been a number of announcements made by the Prime Minister which I hope will offer some much needed support to rail commuters. Particularly the cap of inflation plus 1% on rail fare increases. I was also pleased that the Prime Minister announced a Council Tax freeze for the third year running.

Justin Urquhart Stewart gives guidance about the new financial ‘norm’ On 27 September Mazars hosted an afternoon with Justin Urquhart Stewart at their Milton Keynes offices, in conjunction with the Buckinghamshire IoD. He gave a whistle stop tour of the world’s key economies and the implication for personal financial planning. Justin’s a regular contributor and commentator for the BBC, Bloomberg and CNN US Business News as an investment expert. Taking the audience on a global economic tour, he demonstrated how things are much better than often described in the media. He cited the US where growth is slowly returning. “Many corporates in America are profitable and building up cash, but they’re not yet investing because they lack confidence in the markets. Give companies positive belief and things will change,” he explained. Justin views the euro as a political rather than a financial problem. It is an unfinished currency that doesn’t benefit from the fiscal recycling, tax harmonisation and disciplines you would expect to find in a national currency. However, he believes this should not cloud our judgement; as in the US, businesses within the eurozone’s component countries are generally sitting on cash without enough market confidence to invest. He suggested that at present and for the foreseeable future, growth in China, India and Brazil is likely to be lower and slower. Although they follow a similar growth trend, the ways in which each country is progressing are distinctly different. The UK is growing slowly but is firmly heading in the right direction. Individuals are rapidly paying back personal debt rather than ignoring the issue. A wellkept secret, our National Debt Management Office is controlling and reducing national debt, which inturn increases market confidence. British government bonds continue to be considered a safe haven by investors which helps reduce our national borrowing costs. “Britain is still economically strong. We’re the world’s tenth largest exporter and the eighth largest manufacturer. Today Sheffield is producing more highend steel than it was 30 years ago. Around 400,000 businesses are set up in the UK each year, compared to perhaps 150,000 30 years ago. “A recent study showed that more than 60% of the SMEs surveyed intended to employ more people within the next year. It’s unfortunate that these messages

12 mkflyers central

rarely appear in the media, as they would lift market confidence,” commented Justin. “Expect gradual growth with more economic volatility to come – this is the ‘normal’ that you’d expect after a boom. Long-term personal financial planning is really important. We need to return to the fundamental disciplines that Mazars share with their customers to be better off in the future. “Most of us follow a business plan, yet as individuals the only thing many people plan is their next holiday. You need to plan to ensure your investments span a range of asset classes to increase the long-term predictability of overall returns,” he advised. Knowing when your personal funds are likely to run out in older age is vital. “The date your money runs out will change each year as good and bad events take place throughout your life, so you need to continuously update your plans. Your personal financial plan should not be about getting the largest possible return on individual investments; it’s about managing volatility, minimising risk, reducing costs and optimising returns. “Success in the new ‘norm’ means business leaders should regularly engage professional financial planners. If you can do this you’ll be a lot better off and more confident, regardless of what the Chancellor says going forward,” concluded Justin.

Thumbs up to Mazars, the international headline sponsor at Business Expo 3.0 The Business Expo 3.0 team is delighted to announce that Mazars LLP, an international accounting and business advisory firm, has become a headline sponsor for this unique one-day event on 8 March 2013 in Milton Keynes. “This conference and exhibition bridges the gap between where business leaders are now and where profitable commerce is heading. It will help them to plan and profit from new thinking, new technology and new markets at home and overseas. The education it will bring echoes themes we regularly discuss with companies around the world,” commented Phil Verity, Mazars’ UK senior partner. Business Expo 3.0 includes exhibition areas and keynote speakers dedicated to international trading, environmental developments, the high-tech future of cities around the world, and the role of new media. “All these areas play a vital role in progressing in today’s business world. The Smart City concept is an international concern in which environmental impact is high on the agenda. One of our keynote speakers at the expo, Professor Keith Straughan, leads Britain’s think tank on the subject. “Businesses that trade internationally generally have higher revenues than those which don’t. Many of our clients look to start or increase their overseas sales, which begins with achieving a deep understanding of their target markets and careful planning. We

16 mkflyers central

know from experience that new technologies and new media play a vital role in growth, which is why Business Expo 3.0 is such an important event,” added Rachael Bean, Business Expo 3.0 committee member and director of Solution Factors PR and marketing agency. New technology and media keynote speakers include Apple education mentor Neil Emery and Pearson VUE’s managing director for AMEA, Matthew Poyiadgi. Attendees will learn what’s coming next for Britain’s businesses and how to harness the best of intellectual and technological progress. Business Expo 3.0 founder Vicky Beale, director of Rapid Sales Solutions, explained what led her to awake this sleeping giant: “My original concept of hosting an exhibition of this magnitude came from previous experience in running large-scale conferences where the power of creating real-business connections was apparent. “The Business Expo 3.0 journey is living proof that carefully laid plans become reality if you commit and select the correct partners to help you. Rachael was one of the first people I approached and through her dedication and passion for the project from day one, we’ve attracted Mazars, one of Europe’s largest accountancy firms, with first-hand expertise in what it takes to trade in countries throughout the world.”

It will be no surprise to those who know that my family run a fireworks factory, that November is one of my favourite months. It always seems to go off with a bang and I have particularly fond memories as a boy, setting up the fireworks here in Campbell Park in the city. To this day we all still enjoy the firework spectacular, this year held on the 4th November, and the fair which is bought along with it. However, November also has another relevance for me, as it does for many others, in my role as a serving Territorial Army Officer. This year is no different as I intend to sell poppies in Olney and attend various events to commemorate Armistice Day around our city. While personally I find it important to remember those I have served with, I believe it is vital that as a country we pay tribute to those who have died for us and I was particularly pleased to hear of the Prime Minister’s intentions to remember the centenary of World War One. Conflict comes with so many costs and giving school children the opportunity to see the battle fields where so many fell, can only help to remind them of the human cost which comes so dearly. One of the motivating factors for me getting involved in politics was my belief that more should be done to resolve disputes before resorting to conflict and so I am deeply supportive of the commemoration. To coin a famous Churchill phrase, ‘jaw jaw is better than war war’. The past month saw me going around the constituency showing support to different causes. Breast Cancer Awareness week took place in October and I was delighted to join Screenetics based in Linford Wood, who produce breast checking kits to make it easier for people to feel for lumps. The kits are available at Lloyds Pharmacies nationally and have been really successful to date. Men are just as susceptible to breast cancer as women and 1 in 3 of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. These startling statistics go some

20 mkflyers central

way to explain why it is so important we do check ourselves and I would urge you all to keep an eye out for the Screenetics kit. Another worthy cause which I took great pleasure in supporting was the World Milk Day. I visited North Crawley School and was delighted to hear about how the school are giving milk to their pupils in order to encourage them to drink more of it. With a rise in cases of osteoporosis, there is no doubt that encouraging young children to drink milk can go some way to help make stronger bones and I was really pleased to see so many children enjoying “the white stuff”! I also visited Tesco to support their Schools Voucher campaign. Last year, 79 schools in the North of Milton Keynes claimed over £23,000 worth of equipment from the scheme. Impressively, Tesco have been running a voucher scheme since they launched Computers for schools in 1992 and have subsequently given over £185 million worth of a range of equipment to schools across the UK. I was really impressed to see that so many of our schools here in Milton Keynes had been benefiting directly from our shopping and I will be making sure I continue to keep hold of my vouchers. As ever, I am always here to help you should you need it and if want to get in touch you can contact my office on 01908 686830. Mark Lancaster TD MP

How do I identify a good bookkeeper from a bad one and what sort of questions should I be asking them?” A: When it comes to maintaining your financial records you want to make sure the work is as accurate and comprehensive as possible; it not only provides you with the essential tools for managing and forecasting for your business but represents you (and your business) to your accountant and HMRC. Finding the right bookkeeper does not have to be a frustrating task; for the most part a bookkeeper will possess the following characteristics: enjoy working with numbers, attention to detail and being analytical. However, there are additional features that can separate the regular bookkeepers from the exceptional bookkeepers: Friendly and approachable Your bookkeeper is the bridge between you and your accountant. However it is just as important that they communicate well with you as with them. A bookkeeper should speak to you in such a way that you understand the accounting or tax principles that apply to your situation. If you have any questions, you need to be comfortable approaching your bookkeeper for answers. The relationship is crucial for achieving sound results. Experience A common task for accountants is to double check the work of a bookkeeper. Experienced bookkeepers can minimise the accountants’ need to check by ensuring the bank and supplier reconciliations are completed and documented. A good bookkeeper will ensure that you paperwork will be organised and easy to access through a good referencing system.

Cost Effective With any service, you want to make sure you are getting good value for money. It can sometimes be difficult to know what you are paying for with bookkeeping services. Your bookkeeper should be very clear about what work is to be carried out. You should know before you receive any bills, what work is being done and how long they expect to take doing it. Business needs You should make sure your bookkeeper understands your business and what this means for your bookkeeping requirements. Many small businesses only get a financial health-check once a year. In most cases, this may not be often enough to make effective decisions. Your bookkeeper can do more than just record transactions. A good bookkeeper should provide you with reports to help you understand your suppliers, customers and cash position on a regular basis. This can help the business owner to focus on areas that may lead to problems if not addressed earlier enough. Standard Practices Bookkeepers will handle the tasks relating to financial transactions including recording income and expenditure, bank reconciliations and handling invoices. It is important to understand what would happen to your books if your bookkeeper was unable to complete the work. A good bookkeeper should have a system in place to cover this eventuality so be sure to ask! Your bookkeeper is an extension of your business and so ultimately, the most important thing is to do your homework and ensure that you feel comfortable and confident in not only their personal capabilities but also their own support structure. If you think you may need a bookkeeper or would like to find out more about the services offered by Rosemary Bookkeeping, feel free to contact me at louisewesley@rosemarybooks.co.uk

Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.
