BUSINESS TO BUSINESS

IN MILTON KEYNES May 2013

Walton Pre-Preparatory School Within a tranquil piece of countryside that is set amongst the grounds of the Open University sits one of Milton Keynes educational treasures Walton Pre-Preparatory School. A home from home sensory haven for your little ones to be cared for, learn and grow at the start of their lives and aptly positioned opposite the other end of the educational scale; the Open University.

As difficult as it is for our children and even us adults here in the UK to explore and be outside, as often as we would wish, due to our unpredictable weather, we certainly have learned the all round benefits from our Mediterranean neighbours. This is what makes this school a gem in our city as its extensive gardens are also a sensory, stimulating, safe environment for the children to learn and interact within. Each building leads through the garden to the superb Studio where children of all ages from babies to the pre-prep have free time whether it soft play, or music and dance classes. This is also a great space for the whole school to be together, a very important thing for young children as we all know they love to be with and are stimulated by children of all ages. Everywhere you turn, from whichever classroom you are in, you are surrounded by beautiful mature gardens, not to mention the woodland “nature trail, encompassing the bespoke built log climbing frame, perfect for the little ones to play safely.

Tucked away just off the H9 at the side entrance to the OU, and perfectly positioned from the surrounding villages and centre MK, is the beautiful Old Rectory House of Walton Pre-Preparatory. With the opportunity to acquire the original Coach House, which sits adjacent to the Old Rectory, and the superb large newly built Studio, the new additions compliment the already beautiful school. The Coach House has been thoughtfully and age appropriately converted into the Nursery Department of the Pre-Preparatory School, where they have babies from 2 months old to 2 yrs. Here the babies and toddlers are lovingly cared for and encouraged to interact socially at playtimes, both indoors and outdoors.

Even when our weather confines us to the indoors, with the stunning sensory room, library, brand new computer room and the wonderful new Studio to run around in, the children here at Walton are never short of stimulating, engaging, activities. It really is a joy to see the children of our next generation so involved in what is around them and to see a school and its staff, dedicated to bringing out the very best of each child, the happy faces say it all and how lucky they are to be in such a wonderful environment.

Broughton Manor Preparatory School The steady growth of the young city of Milton Keynes, with businesses and residents not only in the town but in the surrounding villages, shows with the many families moving into the area. This growth seems to be highlighted in the continual success and therefore expansion of one of the city’s schools, Broughton Manor Preparatory School.

The children benefit here from the extra facilities that have been added to the school and with recently doubling the size of the playground, there is plenty of opportunity to burn off energy between classes. Recently introducing the outside classroom in the “Spinney” allows the children as much outside activity and interactive learning as possible, and the soon to be built Astroturf pitch will enhance their already diverse games lessons, giving the children a chance to acquire new skills while at play. The anticipated addition of Phase 5 of the School is being built and will be completed next year, bringing a brand new assembly hall, 3 more preparatory department classrooms and a state of art ICT Suite. With all the excitement surrounding the new facilities additions at Broughton Manor, there still is the focus on teaching the children to their best ability and maintaining their high academic standards. The care and attention to detail with each and every child is of paramount importance to the dedicated staff at Broughton Manor Preparatory School.

Situated just off Junction 14 of the M1, minutes from Centre MK and with very easy access to all the surrounding villages, this makes for great positioning for those parents in need of a local school within their daily commute via the east side of the city. This growth has reflected in the increase of pupils and the need to expand the superb facilities that are already available to all ages and departments of the school. From the babies in the Nursery at 2 months through to the Preparatory children of 11yrs, the demands and needs of each at the forefront of the Schools plans. Even with expansion and growth, what is so reassuring to see is the importance of small class sizes, allowing for individual academic and social development for each child. Certainly something you can see and feel throughout the school are happy, confident, and content children.

As described in their latest inspection they were awarded “EXCELLENT” in all 10 areas of the report, which is a fantastic achievement to receive such high standards across the board. Details of which are on their website, www.bmprep.co.uk Knowing your child goes to school and is excited to be there and learn is certainly the sign of a successful school.

POSITIVE LIVING Manifestation

(I am I) In the beginning there was nothing but the vast dark emptiness of space. Then there was movement, the movement of mind. Mind wondered what it was, but not in the language of today – it was simply a feeling, a murmur and a movement within its own self, for language and communication had yet to be born. These would come later through conscious intelligence, evolution and life. (I am I) Mind made manifest the universe as we see it today, just as we too manifest our lives and experiences daily. Earth is a living ball of conscious mind energy that has slowed itself down enough to form matter. Man is part of that world. He too is a mixture of living energy and matter. Energy in its fastest form is light. We are all beings of light, of conscious mind energy – slowed physically to form the matter we see. A baby is pure light when it’s born. It’s brand new and without tarnish. But during the course of experience and time, this light can grow dim and almost appear shrouded – as troubles, worries, stresses and fears override inbuilt powers of peace and clear thought. Each day is full of connections and opportunity stemming from conscious and unconscious wants and needs that you hold. You transmit signals back to life every second you are awake. Thoughts make these connections reality. They are the driving force behind the power that is you - and manifest what you are living today. Each dawning day is a new page to write as you will. Let the past be gone and let tomorrow unfold as it may. Today is the place you are at – it deserves your attention. It’s where all possibilities can be made manifest and real life can come into being. You are a child of the future. Each generation has the chance to make its own mark upon its own history and timeline. What will you do? The life you live is by your own design, by your own free will and by choice; you are master and creator of the self you’ll become – you have hold of your destiny in your own hand. Cause and effect will always play their part and you live out the consequence of your actions, but that is all. You have an inbuilt ability to create a better version of your future and also your life. Once upon a time a dream was born. It was the dream of

a perfect world. That dream can still be a reality if we want it to be – if we really want it. Many people believe this world is on a course of destruction, and in a way it is, but just as equally it’s not. Since time began there has never been such a cry for help as there is now. Life has never been so good, yet for many it has never been so bad. Only we can put a stop to where things are heading and these changes begin inside us. We can look around at the world and recognize that all souls mirror our own, that fundamentally we are all the same in our search for input, understanding, truth and love. Turmoil is a symptom of unrest that’s playing out on the planet as a whole, illness, stress and daily strife are the proof. More people are becoming sick with serious conditions than with general colds, bugs & flu. We have mastered infection and sanitation, but critical conditions are increasing; another symptom of the overload we are facing, both in terms of the planet and the strains being placed on ourselves. (I am I) Man is love, life, energy and light in motion. He is capable of birth and of destruction. The story of his life is but a chapter in the history of his existence and it’s this he must now come to realize. Life does not begin and end with his present form; it extends an eternity in either direction. Man had life before he was born to his parents and he will continue that life after his final breath leaves his body. He is the present manifestation of a living God, capable of creating his every desire. He holds the power of the universe that is his own life. He alone pulls the strings and plays the notes that he dances to the tune of. He holds more power in his own hand than he could imagine in many lifetimes. He can be all he could ever want to be. (I am I) Let go of your fears. Let the past fall away as well as it is able. Realize the power you have over your own reality and future and take one step at a time as you travel continuously towards it. You are placing your own mark upon history and upon this living planet itself. Let each day simply unfold. Live each moment with the highest intention, to the best of your personal ability; remain open & honest with your inner most thoughts; take time out to look at your affairs and then steps to put them in order; clear some of the backlog of chores that are waiting – all these things you will not regret. At the end of each day take a look back to see what you have accomplished. Become once again like a child. Be receptive and open to the things that this time frame will bring you. Hold no fears, preconceptions or preoccupations. Know that you are and always have been - an important part of the planet you live upon. Reconnect to the source of energy & light and to the love that surrounds your every move. Manifestation is not miraculous – it’s a natural capability we all possess and something we do every day…

MP’s Diary

By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North

As an MP, you often hear people saying ‘you’ve got no idea what it’s like in the real world!’ In the past I’ve worked for my family business and served in the TA, but I want to make sure I stay in touch with what’s happening on the ground in Milton Keynes. So many people contribute to keeping our city up and running on a day to day basis, often doing crucial jobs with no praise, so I have been doing a series of “Work Experience” placements to meet some of MK’s unsung heroes. Being a man who enjoys his food, I kick started my placements with a trip to the Xscape branch of McDonalds. Greeted by Ken Tomkins, the long-serving franchisee of the Xscape and Westcroft stores, I was presented with my personalised ‘MP’ badge. I was set to get a taste of life as a Maccy D’s employee. The organisation behind the counter is incredible, a production line for every component; heating the buns, frying the patties, and wrapping the cheeseburgers. The meticulous process of putting a Big Mac together took me a while to grapple with. I was amazed to watch the experts put four of them together in the time it took me to grill my buns! But sitting down to taste my hard work made it all worth it – surely one of the perks of the job. Ken has pledged to take on 90 more employees this year in Milton Keynes. With fantastic training and career prospects, the old adage that ‘you can always get a job at McDonalds’ takes on a completely new meaning. Having learnt from my shift at McDonalds that these things are never as easy as they look, I prepared myself for the fact that constructing a Subway was going to be no simple task on my work placement at Subway in Kingston. After meeting the franchise owners Tesh and Vimal, I learnt all about being a ‘Sandwich Artist’ from Siobhan Frazer, a

Subway employee of over six years. I was completely taken aback by the precision of a sandwich artist; the 45 degree bread slice, cheese on the top meat on the bottom, wrapping it diagonally. I was surprised to feel so pressured when I could see the queue building whilst I was still trying to tell the wheat bread from the Italian herbs and cheese! Having learnt from my shift at Subway that these things are never as easy as they look, I prepared myself for the fact that constructing a Big Mac was going to be no simple task on my work placement at McDonalds in Xscape. Having made so much food and waste in previous placements, I volunteered to join one of our waste collection teams in Bletchley and give them a hand collecting the city’s rubbish. After a thorough safety briefing at the recycling centre in Wolverton, I joined Paul, Mez and Darren on their round in their new ‘single pass’ vehicle. Designed with separate sections for pink sacks, black sacks and glass, the vehicle reflects the move away from just throwing everything into black sacks destined for landfill and the growing popularity of recycling. With a modern vehicle like this, the need for multiple collections, in theory at least, is much reduced.

To say I hit the ground running is an understatement, these guys don’t mess about! The young crew literally run everywhere and within 30 minutes my outer layers have been stripped off and the chilly morning soon felt more like summer. I’d joined the crew on one of the busiest days of the year, as they struggled to catch up after a long bank holiday weekend. Black sacks in the main hopper and pink in the smaller, with the lorry almost in perpetual motion, no need to go to the gym for these boys and I can see why there didn’t seem to be an ounce of fat on any of them. It was a fascinating morning, hard work but thoroughly satisfying. We all get frustrated when sometimes our blue recycling box isn’t exactly where we left it (they really do all look the same after a while) but I left full of admiration for a crew doing a job many of us wouldn’t fancy. So next time you’re stuck in a cue waiting for a Big Mac, struggling to decide what Subway sandwich to have or even stuck behind a bin lorry, rather than hoot your horn and getting frustrated why not give them a smile and say ‘thanks’ to some of Milton Keynes’ hidden heroes.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic. Why mobile marketing is a must for 2013 Ten years ago, using your phone to watch video clips, download music or shop online seemed a lot further in the future, but is now commonplace. The technology advancement of smartphones and tablets is much quicker now than the internet and it is predicted that by the end of this year that mobile internet use will overtake desktop. With the continued growth of mobile marketing, it’s no longer asking “if” you should incorporate mobile into your online marketing but “how”. Nearly every business can benefit from some element of mobile marketing and advertising methods. As people access the internet via their mobiles at all times of the day and night, the ability to target and engage with your customers on a much more personal level, is becoming an extremely powerful tool for marketers to build relationships and obtain brand loyalty. So, whether your business is virtual, bricks-andmortar, or both, the benefits of mobile marketing are unquestionable. Here are 5 recommendations to get you started with mobile marketing. 1.Mobile friendly website. Research on mobile website usability shows that a website that has been mobile-optimized significantly improves the user experience and creates a longer and more positive interaction. It also allows you to immediately engage users with mobile-specific features such as click-tocall and mapping functions.

or discount voucher instantly rewards and grows brand loyalty. 3.Make it quick and personal. Most people have their mobile devices with them throughout the course of the day, so seize on the intimacy aspect of mobile and provide content that’s personalised and relevant, based on what’s known about them. Content should display quickly and be easy for your audience to access with just a few taps. The fewer keystrokes required the better. 4.Make it obvious what you want them to do. It might sound obvious, but making sure your call to action is clear and enticing so your audience knows what the next step is, will keep them engaged and make their experience with your brand more memorable. 5.There’s more to mobile than just text. Although text messaging is still the UK’s most popular way to communicate, there are other mobile platforms and applications to inform and engage with your customers. Providing QR codes and developing niche product applications can make it easier for customers to connect with your business for product information or customer service. In turn, your customers can then share this information if they find it useful. By the end of 2013, there will be more mobile devices on Earth than people (Cisco via Mashable, 2013) so it’s worth investing part of your marketing budget in this area...before your competitors do.

HLB Creative Limited T: 01908 524245 E: info@hlbcreative.co.uk W: www.hlbcreative.co.uk

2.Give back to your customers for their loyalty. Thanking a user for their participation or loyalty is a gesture that is so well received and can often be overlooked. Offering a QR code, useful or fun app

MP’s Diary

By Iain Stewart MP, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South

I am passionate about seeing young people achieve their potential and one of the things I can do as the local MP is try to ensure that there are as many opportunities as possible for them to do so. This is why I was glad to visit Nifty Lifts recently when its operations director, Steve Beckwith, invited me to see how his company is creating opportunities for young people in Milton Keynes through its apprenticeship programme. During my visit, I met two apprentices who were splitting their time between gaining a qualification at Milton Keynes College and getting practical work experience at Nifty Lifts. Zack Berridge, one of the two apprentices, told me that he was enjoying the best of both worlds with his apprenticeship. I was impressed by all that I saw and consider both apprentices lucky to work under the direction of Steve Beckwith who also started his career several years ago as an apprentice.

Also, local McDonald’s franchisee Ken Tomkins is getting set to create 100 jobs in the area with the establishment of his new McDonald’s franchise. He invited me behind the scenes at his Westcroft franchise. I met some of the 90 staff employed at the restaurant and learnt more about how Ken is creating job opportunities for young people, and helping local charities and community groups. A visit to a McDonald’s restaurant wouldn’t be complete without me trying my hands out at making a Big Mac burger and I received excellent coaching on this from assistant manager Tom Williams. It was really interesting meeting the young men and women working at the restaurant. They were professional, worked as a team and showed a high-level of customer service. Ken is providing an opportunity for

14 mkflyers central

young people to develop skills which most employers’ value. Anyone interested in working at the new restaurant should apply through mcdonalds.co.uk quoting the postcode of the store, MK17 9RB.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) provides an invaluable service to residents and I was delighted to visit volunteers recently. My assistant and I also had a chance to shadow volunteer advisers Jean Wood and John Easden as they carried out their work, helping residents resolve their problems. The CAB and my office share many similarities and the experience was very useful for me in my role as an MP.

Finally, if you have any concerns or require my assistance, please do get in touch.

New Strategy for Sickness Absence The Government has opted to set up the Independent Assessment Service (IAS) to assist employers in tackling long-term sickness absence. Dame Carol Black was tasked by the Government to conduct a review on sickness absence in the workplace and to consider its effects on both the employee and the employer. Her report, Health at Work – An Independent Review of Sickness Absence, was published in November 2011. One of the main recommendations was the creation of the new state-funded IAS to be run by occupational health professionals. Its main focus would be on: • absence • offering advice to the employee and the employer

16 mkflyers central

• helping support the employee to return to work when appropriate Government ministers are in the process of finalising the details but it is anticipated that the IAS will be launched during the first part of 2014.

One detail that has been confirmed is that if an employee refuses to co-operate with the IAS, no further fit notes will be issued to them. Good news for the employer as without medical evidence, the employer can refuse to pay them Statutory Sick Pay and contractual sick pay. Make a Lasting Impression two parties meeting. Everyone loves someone that looks confident and friendly. 4. Remember names - People love the sound of their own name so it is important to remember them. It is not always easy, especially if you are meeting a group of people at once but try to remember as it shows you are paying attention and interested in what they are saying. A good way to do this is to repeat the name out loud after meeting someone; try to mention the name several times in the conversation so it remains in your mind. Another way is to find a connection or characteristic between the name and the person.

By definition you only get one chance to make a first impression. Making sure that is a positive experience when you meet someone new is so important as it is what people remember the most. Your employer and employees will appreciate if you are pleasant and warm the first time meeting you, but it should not stop there. It is crucial that they continue to have a positive impression, trust and respect you. The following steps should get you started on leaving a wonderful and lasting impression. 1. Smile - Always have a smile on your face when you first meet someone. It makes you look friendly and confident. People like someone who smiles, they seem approachable and easy to talk to. This makes others feel at ease, especially your coworkers. 2. Be a good listener - By listening attentively to others, you open the doors to trusting you. People love talking about themselves so ask them questions and listen. When devoting your attention to others instead of talking about yourself, it shows that you are genuinely interested in them; this will make you stand out. 3. Look them in the eye - To show others you are easily approachable and feel comfortable, shake their hand firmly, look them directly in the eye and smile. This never fails! It creates a connection between the

18 mkflyers central

5. Use your voice - Improving how you use your voice will assist you in making a strong, positive first impression. a) Speak clearly. If you are not clear, the important points you’re trying to make will get lost. Worse, people will simply tune you out because they do not understand you. b) Change up your speech pattern. Nothing numbs listeners more than somebody who speaks in a monotone. Use pitch for variation, while accenting your key words. This keeps people involved and interested in what you have to say. c) Use an appropriate tempo. Don’t speak in a slow, drawn-out manner. The speed of speech affects how your message is interpreted. d) Avoid using fillers between your points. Avoid saying “you know, like, uh, really, kind of” and other fillers. They are annoying to listeners and make the speaker seem nervous and unprepared. e) Gesticulate whilst you talk. Using appropriate body language to emphasise your points enhances the power of your words and communicates your enthusiasm. 5000 leaflets for May

Here’s what our customers say about mkflyers... I have been advertising in the MK Flyer for several months and with Stuart’s help we have attracted some great customers from the Flyer. I would recommend this publication even if, like me your offering is more business to business. Andrew Freestone, Freestone Communications

customers to spend money with you and increase customer loyalty. The Direct Debit Guarantee also protects your customers giving them peace of mind when using your services. Reporting functions MK Flyers working with our partner London & Zurich can offer you full on-line management of client accounts and enables you to have full control of your payment collection scheme. Is your business right for Direct Debits? Many businesses are interested in using the Direct Debit scheme to collect monies due from their own customers but the banks normally advise that they are too small to be considered as an originator of Direct Debits. Working with London and Zurich, however, we have been able to negotiate a special arrangement and can offer it to you in a very cost effective way. mkflyers about us MKFLYERS & MKFLYERS CENTRAL – A FLYAWAY SUCCESS MKFLYERS CENTRAL is part of the MK Flyers group The first version of the Flyer was delivered to 2,000 homes in Newport Pagnell in 2006. We now produce four versions of the MK Flyer, to cover North, South, East and West Milton Keynes, and deliver 42,000 copies, potentially reaching over 100,000 people. This gives our clients the unique opportunity to advertise only in their desired part of Milton Keynes, thereby accurately pinpointing their target market. With flexible advertising options to suit all budgets, the MK Flyer is one of the most effective ways of attracting new customers and increasing your profile across Milton Keynes. Now there is the MKFLYERS CENTRAL too, dedicated to increasing business between local companies.
