POSITIVE LIVING

The person you are now is not the whole person that you can be... From your first breath to your last you are a work in constant progress. Every person is unique. Everyone is here today physically in this time frame for their own purpose, to fulfil their soul agenda and life journey. The whole purpose of life is to evolve. Nature runs in cycles, animals live according to their species limitations; we on the other hand do not. We have the ability and intelligence to be anything we desire, with no boundaries or programming to hold us back. Before birth you still existed. You were present in energy form, pretty much as you are now but without your physical shape, your present body, much as vapour would be to ice etc. You had most likely been on Earth before within a different time and place, you’d lived a different life and built up character, strengths and talents according to world progression and conditions of life around you. Every soul on Earth today has lived on Earth before. This is important to understand. We are souls on a soul journey of eternal growth, of infinite intelligence and progression. Every single soul will experience everything, if not in this life then in those before or yet to come, as part of the unending cycle of life unfolding and playing out. This is the real purpose of human existence, the reason that we are here, for collectively we give the meaning to life itself, we write its program, what it actually means to spend time here physically living, to feel, think, see, hear, know, to love, learn, grow, experience, explore and express... Collectively we are responsible for the labels and meaning we stick on life, for how we live today and for what is playing out across the globe. We invent the real time script that we then daily live. We are accountable for what we feed to life and for what we are attracting for the future - and the world view we’ll leave behind us for our children. Whilst still in the realm of spirit, before our time of birth, we tried to plan the type of life we personally would encounter. We chose our parents, siblings, peers and people we would meet along the way, how they would aid and interact (and us with them), and what we’d gain on a soul level from the experience. We saw an overview of life today upon the surface of the planet, what we could and would contribute if we were able to wake up, to help or heal or change, to aid what we saw unfolding for the greatest good. With these things and more in mind we saw the benefit of presence for self and others. This life that you are living is your most important yet, for it’s the culmination of your soul’s progression up to date... After every life lived here we gain earthly baggage to work through. We see what we’ve accomplished, opportunities that we’d missed, ways we could have changed things – had we realised - for the better. We see the real affect of our live actions - good and bad, we see the routes we took and available alternatives we may have missed for different outcomes. We see the time that we’ve just spent here and the affect it had on life and others, whether overall we were an asset or a drain. These are some of the many varied things that program personal Karma in every life, karma that’s accumulated throughout our present life agenda, which must then be overcome and triumphed

through for us to grow. This is a fundamental reason why we experience what we do and why we are all so very different, for we are all on different levels of achievement, development and progression, we’re on individual journeys playing out – in real time life, journeys of our own choosing and design. Babies are born pure. They have no blemishes or baggage at time of birth. They are shaped by their experience, by life and people interacting, by society, by conditioning and conditions that surrounds them. Depending on their character and intelligence, they assimilate knowledge gained. This in turn builds into karma – that needs to be worked through in later life – as we are now. Karma, cause and effect, free will and personal choice determines who you are and what you do today. This makes you unique – it’s why you are you. Nothing that you’ve been through was meant to harm. Instead as you look back – you will see that you are stronger and much wiser for your experience. You have grown. You are different today than who you were in years of youth, and you’ll alter time again before you leave the planets surface and physical life. What you leave undone in this life – goes with you to the next, for life continues – it does not stop. You will overview your achievements as your contribution to today and to life’s present real time programming as a whole. What you leave behind will depend on how you read reality, how you interpreted live signs and signals, what you did through your own free will, conscious intent and personal offering. What you gave in terms of energy – good and bad. Our life links to the planet. Our presence is either an asset or a drain – the choice is ours. Everything about you – you have chosen at some time, even in your smallest thoughts, your look, your taste, your home, your work, your loved ones and your hobbies. Milton Keynes itself was even birthed in this same way, as an idea within the mind of its first architectural creator and then of every creative thinking mind in tune thereafter, from commercial to domestic, so you can begin to see the power that you too personally weald, for you are an integral working part of life itself. For today at least, begin to notice your life differently, as though you were looking in... Do you feel loved, understood or appreciated? Recognise your own thoughts, habits and patterns. Begin to notice how they drive you and how they add to life around you, how your actions write the reality that you then face and invest your free time, free will and life force continuously in. No one should pull your strings. You have total flexibility to live your own life. Physically, whether in this life or the next, nothing is completely certain except we birth and die, yet far more occurs on levels unseen than we can ever imagine. The soul journey you are travelling is completely individual and unwritten – so what you will contribute, pay forward or give back – is yours by personal choice and accomplishment.

Small but Powerful... It’s possibly your smallest piece of marketing collateral. A large proportion of companies probably don’t even have one, but Internet giant Google thought it was so important that they tried 3 times in 2009 to get it right, and then again in 2012. The Favicon (short for favourites icon) is the tiny 16x16 pixel logo that shows any web user, on any web browser, anywhere in the world, precisely whose site they are currently on. And whilst this icon is not strictly a logo, it is taking on the same importance as we shift more of our lives online. So could the square Favicon begin to dictate the process of logo design? Long, text only or “logotype” designs could be left behind for square, instantly recognisable symbols that work in this smallest of spaces. And here lay the problem for Google. Not having an instantly recognisable symbol like Apple, VW or HP, the colourful Google logotype does not reduce down and remain legible. So Google have built on their previous attempts of a capital “G” and then a small blue “g”, followed by a series of Google coloured blocks interlocking to form a “g” shape, finally resting on the white “g” in a blue box.

8 mkflyers central

Is it really worth all the fuss? Well probably, yes. These little squares appear at the top of everyone’s browser windows, web bookmarks and mobile devices. They could become more important than your existing logo in the digital world, so the design of them needs to be even more well thought out. So, what makes a good Favicon? • Keep it simple, 256 pixels is not very many • Only using a few colours, this small square needs contrast • Avoid small text, it will blur and will not be readable When it comes to planning your 2013 marketing, it’s worth thinking about all the online elements you can benefit from and Favicons are a great way to start. Using a small yet powerful design, you’ll be building up a strong and recognisable brand across a host of digital channels which will enhance the overall company image and could set you apart from your competitors.

As we are now in February, last year really does feel like a distant memory and while the snow tried to slow us down last month it seems we are off to a flying start. Milton Keynes has been tipped by Experian as one of the top Boroughs for growth and with fantastic prospects for the future. Whilst I didn’t need a survey to tell me how great a city we live in it is good to know our local economy is doing well.

to engage with the businesses that are employing people around the city. The New Year also saw time for land from across our city, held by the Homes and Communities Agency (a government department), transfer to Milton Keynes Council ownership. This will mean that decisions will be made by the council, putting the power back in the hands of local people. I worked in partnership with the council to make this happen and I felt it was a true victory for localism but also reassuring for our future here in MK. As you may know, I spend Friday in Milton Keynes visiting different organisations. To liven up my Friday constituency visits this year, I have decided to take part in a number of work experience placements. Having been invited by Subway to become a ‘Sandwich Artist’ for the afternoon, I thought it would be a great opportunity to kick off these visits. Franchise owners Tesh and Vimal showed me around the store, and quickly I was suited and booted, ready to serve the public.

However, while we are doing well Iain Stewart, the Milton Keynes South MP and I felt that it is crucial to continue to help those who are finding it hard. We decided to hold a Jobs Fair recently in partnership with the Council, Connexions and MK College, specifically trying to target young people who are struggling to find a job. Youth unemployment in Milton Keynes is at 7.6% which is higher than the 3.5% of total unemployment in Milton Keynes. Compared nationally, these figures are low but they do act as a warning sign and we wanted to organise something to address this. With over 30 different businesses and agencies in attendance the event was a huge success and I hope that the young people who came found it useful

10 mkflyers central

With the professional assistance of Siobhan Frazer, a Subway employee of over 16 years, I was shown the ins and outs of making the perfect Sub. From slicing the bread at 45 degrees, to wrapping it diagonally, I had a brilliant time learning the ropes, and realised it was a lot more stressful than meets the eye. I’ll be supporting Subway franchisee’s in their bid to continue rolling out their business across Milton Keynes. Do get in touch if you would like me to come and do some work experience for you-no job is too small! I have a new website which can be found on www. marklancastermp.org if you’d like to receive updates or find information about Milton Keynes. Otherwise, as ever, if you would like to speak to me for any help then please contact my office on 01908 686830 or email me at officeofmarklancaster@parliament.uk Mark Lancaster TD MP

Ask The Business Coach Why Do Businesses need to Improve their Systems before Sales? Businesses must develop systems that promote growth and are capable of sustaining growth or they could fall! Most business owners want their businesses to grow because they perceive a bigger business offers more profits and thereby offering an income and a lifestyle that we all strive for. Yet these same business owners are already working long hours and realistically couldn’t handle any increase in sales unless they changed the systems they have in their business. Businesses which are already working long hours and searching for greater profits through sales need systems in place to service the extra demand. If these systems aren’t implemented not only will they be incapable of meeting the needs of the new customers they will probably fail to service the needs of the customers they had prior to this growth. Implementing systems for all areas is the key to promoting and sustaining growth for your business. Having systems in all areas of your businesses greatly improves the efficiency and effectiveness of business, e.g. standardising work processes and procedures, improving

quality control and setting standards of service delivery. Unfortunately many businesses have no systems of duplication. Too many business owners work on the principle that it is more important to get the perfect products or the best shop or the best equipment or to have the most technical knowledge about their business, when what’s really important is developing systems. A good example of systemisation is that of the big hamburger restaurants. Most people feel they can make a better hamburger than the leading companies out there? Yet few if any feel they can build a better business system than them. The reason why these companies are so successful is not because they are continually trying to improve their product, it’s because they have implemented many different systems that run the business. Marketing systems, people systems, operation systems and leverage systems are very important. Working on the systems will allow the business to grow in a systemised way so one day it can run without the owner having to do all the work. It is also the secret to Franchising any business you own. That’s why business owners need to implement sales, marketing, team building and team recruitment systems. It’s the complete package. Lead Really Effective Meetings no one feels left out. If someone is not getting involved, ask him or her for their views. This will help all to feel that they are contributing to the meeting.

Keep the meeting on track. Your main goal is to keep the meeting focused on the issues you have on your agenda. Remember that the average length of time for a person’s attention to drift away is 11 minutes. If someone asks a question that is not related to what is being discussed, acknowledge the question and state that it will be answered at the end or as appropriate.

A recent study carried out by Epson in conjunction with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) estimated that £26 billion was lost from the UK economy in 2011 due to time wasted by office workers in meetings. The top three time wasters were: Repetition of information Lack of focus by attendees An unstructured agenda

To make sure that waste in your organisation is minimal follow a few simple guidelines and you will facilitate a successful and efficient meeting. Start with an agenda. You will have better control of what you are doing if you take the time to organise yourself. Ask attendees what they would like to see on the agenda. If there are any questions they would like discussed in the meeting, write them down and make sure they are answered. Include everyone in the meeting. Try to have everyone participate in the discussion, so that

14 mkflyers central

When brainstorming, include everyone. This is a time for everyone to contribute ideas, therefore no idea should be judged. Often you may hear ideas that might not make sense, but remember that even a wild idea may lead to major breakthrough. Use interim summaries. Cover each topic thoroughly before moving on. After you have covered everything on the agenda, verbally sum up the meeting as well as confirming actions and those responsible for said actions. Write a succinct meeting summary. Briefly précis the meeting from the beginning to end with relevant actions. E-mail everyone who attended, as well as those who should have been there, shortly after the meeting. Encourage their thoughts and feedback. By following these guidelines you will lead a very successful and efficient meeting. Over the past few months, I have been taking part in a project called the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship which allows MPs to get involved in a variety of industries.

Millions of people use buses and trains every day, and as a commuter city Milton Keynes is reliant on these services. With that in mind, I have begun my Fellowship with UK transport operator Go-Ahead’s three rail companies, Southern, Southeastern and London Midland. I have also visited Brighton and Hove buses. The Fellowship has provided me with an important insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes on a daily basis to make sure people can get where they need to be. The programme of visits has included the train drivers’ depot at Brighton, where some 165 drivers report for duty, and a visit to ticket offices to meet staff at Brighton, Haywards Heath and at Milton Keynes Central. I have been very impressed by the commitment to improving services for passengers and the ongoing experiences of the Fellowship will be very useful in informing my work on the Transport Select Committee. I am also keen to highlight a new Inquiry that the Transport Committee will be commencing in March. It will be looking at disabled people’s access to transport. This is an area of interest to me because of the feedback that I often receive when I meet local organisations representing disabled people. I would be interested in receiving the experiences of disabled people locally, so that this can assist me during the Inquiry. I am particularly interested to know what

16 mkflyers central

works well, what works less well, and what areas should be consider for investigation. If any readers would like to get in touch with their experiences my contact details are below. Milton Keynes is a beautiful place to live in. This is probably why we experienced a 17% population increase in the 2011 census. With such an increase comes pressure on local services. This is why I have begun a campaign with my colleague, Mark Lancaster MP, for our A&E to be expanded. Locally, more resources are going into the NHS and the number of clinical staff is increasing, but to cope with future growth forecasts more will need to be done On a different issue, I enjoyed visiting the home of John Silverthorn, a constituent whose house is one of the 75 in which energy company E.ON is trialling its smart homes of the future. Under the trial, participants are able to monitor and control their central heating, via a web browser, tablet or smartphone app on the go. It also gives households the opportunity to reduce their energy costs, improve their comfort and control their homes better. Finally, if you have any concerns or require my assistance, please do get in touch. Email: iain.stewart.mp@parliament.uk Tel: 01908 686830 Postal address: House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

Holiday Accruals for Employees Absent on Sick Leave We often find business owners are incredulous that an employee can be absent from work on long-term sick leave yet still continue to accrue their entire holiday entitlement during that time. In the recent case, NHS Leeds v Larner (2012), the Court of Appeal held that a worker was entitled to carry forward untaken paid annual leave even though absent on long-term sick leave and that there was no legal requirement for her to have submitted a request to take the holiday. On termination of employment, she would be entitled to payment in lieu of all holiday accrued but not taken. Despite the fact that the Working Time Regulations 1998 provide that annual leave must be taken “in the leave year in respect of which it is due, where sickness prevents the worker from taking their holiday in the year in which it was due, they will be permitted

to carry the leave forward into the next holiday year. In another case, Asociacion Nacional de Grandes Empresas de Distribucion (Anged) v Federacion de Asociaciones Sindicales (Fasga) and others (2012), the European Court of Justice held that the Working Time Directive prevents national measures that prevent workers who become sick during paid holiday to take that holiday at another time. It makes no difference whether the illness occurred before the scheduled holiday was due to commence or occurs during the holiday period. The period of postponed holiday must be the same as the period of annual leave lost due to sickness and the worker will be free to carry the holiday entitlement forward into the next holiday year. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic. customers to spend money with you and increase customer loyalty. The Direct Debit Guarantee also protects your customers giving them peace of mind when using your services. Reporting functions MK Flyers working with our partner London & Zurich can offer you full on-line management of client accounts and enables you to have full control of your payment collection scheme. Is your business right for Direct Debits? Many businesses are interested in using the Direct Debit scheme to collect monies due from their own customers but the banks normally advise that they are too small to be considered as an originator of Direct Debits. Working with London and Zurich, however, we have been able to negotiate a special arrangement and can offer it to you in a very cost effective way.
