Positive living What do you expect of Christmas? (I am I) Christmas will mean different things to many people, but even though it’s a time of cheer, it is also a time of stress. (I am I)

or break live situations before they come to pass through beliefs, expectations or thought patterns that you carry…

Close your eyes and conjure up the word ‘Christmas’. How do you instantly feel? Stressful? Relaxed? Loving and giving? Apprehensive? Sad? Excited? Full of dread?

Every thought you think is packed with power. Each will program life through intent and content that you give it. If you want a Happy Christmas – wipe your expectations clean and start again.

What you feel is unique to you based on past experience, deep felt belief and future expectation as you pre-condition each event before happens. Part of the problem is that we carry anticipation and expectation based upon how we believe it should be - forward. We want the happy fairy tale holiday but to achieve it means had work and stress, when we’re already overstretched and time restricted. How much pressure do you place upon this two day event? How do you prepare? And what energies manifest as you do? From a very early age we sample Christmas magic. But that magic does not happen until the actual day arrives, and it’s programmed by the effort we put in. (I am I) What will you give to help this magic ease in? (I am I) Let’s take an overall look… From a very early age we expect the Christmas magic to come to us. We learn of Santa and Baby Jesus, the story of Christmas angels, kings and shepherds, we learn of miracles and expectations, of peace and love to all, and how everyone around this time must pull together. This expectation carries through to adulthood, the difference being now that real time pressures and reality set in. The magic fades away as we are stretched in every manner to uphold traditions and produce expensive gifts beyond our budget to show we care. Many don’t like Christmas because it seems commercial, some have dealt with loss or sadness magnified in times of love. Many more will feel alone, without family or a home. Christmas brings our best and worst up to the surface. But what is Christmas actually about, despite the hype and hang-ups that we give it? For one day every year we all should pull together in the name of positivity, peace and love. We decorate our homes to mark this great occasion - because we want to. It adds the extra sparkle as Christmas time comes near. We purchase gifts of love of varying size, shape and expense, because we want to. As we choose them the love we feel becomes invisibly attached. We fill our cupboards and our stomachs again because we want to, and in the process we reach out to others with the heartfelt warmth and love that we all feel. So what’s the problem? The problem is in the labels that we give it, the pressure and the hype we place upon ourselves to meet extensive expectations that we program, set and carry… Way before December when Christmas comes to mind we sigh and dread its galloping approach. We know we’ll spend a fortune. We know there’s work ahead, over and above the busy lives we have already. We feel the pressure of finding gifts, within or without budget and the hours we’ll spend with family we otherwise wouldn’t often see. We know the upsets, the cost and outcome of all Christmas times gone past and we pre-empt the fact that the one ahead will be the same. But what if you could have the perfect Christmas? How would you pre-program it? What would it look like? How would it feel? What could be put in place for this to happen? All you ever do must stem from heart and love. Negativity you feel, think or imagine should be recycled as it springs up, for you are powerful, you can make

6 mkflyers central

Recycle thoughts of effort as you think of decorations. At an appropriate time simply go and fetch them out without pre-empting. Ask within your thoughts that to erect them will be easy. Put on some Christmas music, have some wine and make it fun. Recycle negativity from other people as it pops up. This is the start of the festive season and the energy that you’ll place there. It’ll be much like seeing old friends as trinkets with added memories come to light. Embrace thoughts you want to keep and let all others fall away – don’t keep them going… Next write all your cards. Again recycle thoughts of effort, bring forward love and peace. Light some candles, put on some music, maybe have a glass of wine and send care and loving thoughts to all you write. This positive energy will be delivered with the cards. All love you feel will carry forward as intended. Wrapping can be a hard one as we buy so much. We’ll spend hours. Go through this job as best as you can but use your thoughts to ask that it be easy. Again bring forward thoughts of love as you approach each object. Nothing that you feel will go to waste. When you think of family, of gatherings and Christmas dinner, recycle fears you carry of arguments and stress. Program the day ahead as you would like it to unfold. Remember that you are powerful. Any blimps you pre-conceive - see them corrected in your mind as they pop up, so no more or less than you desire will carry forward. Other people may be negative around you. Within your mind ask for help for them, that any thoughts and fears can be replaced with positivity, that problems be negated so they can find their Christmas magic. Ask for what they need to be with them now – then let it go. As the eyes and ears of now, when you see something’s amiss then set it straight, not with time and effort – but with thoughts requests you make. When the day arrives just be present as it unfolds. Just let it come. Be mindfully aware to tweak things that need tweaking, but your Christmas should be everything you’ve wished. This is one day in a whole year that we can positively pull together. Energies raised we give to life - to use as life would will, for the greater good and health of planet Earth that gives life to us.

emembrance Sunday is an important date in November. As well as giving us the opportunity to remember our Armed Services personnel who have given their lives in the First and Second World Wars, it is an important time to remember all those British men and women who are involved in military actions around the world today. The British Army is currently deployed in 80 countries around the world. Many service personnel are risking their lives away from their families and as a nation we owe them a huge debt of gratitude. It is right that we remember them at the same time. Locally, I was happy to support Milton Keynes Hospital in their new

campaign – Leo’s Appeal. Leo’s Appeal is raising £200,000 to enhance children’s services at the Hospital. Every child admitted to the hospital should receive the best care possible and so the staff at the Hospital, along with their mascot Leo the Lion, are encouraging the community to help them go above and beyond for local children and their families. There have also been some exciting developments this month regarding the East West Rail Line, which will reconnect Oxford to Bletchley and Milton Keynes, before going on to Cambridge and East Anglia. On the 11 November I was invited to speak to the Consortium of local business and councils along the route at an event held at the Institute of Civil Engineers. I was also delight that Transport Minister Stephen Hammond joined us to formally receive a commitment from the Consortium to provide £45million of funding to the Government to help get train moving on the East West Line. This has been a project I have been involved with for many years and I am very pleased that this month it took one more step toward completion. I am very much looking forward to seeing the first trains running between Oxford and Bletchley by 2017, and all the economic benefits this will bring to our area. Lastly, all that is left is for me to wish readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Volkswagen Touareg 3.0TDI 245 SE Reviewed 14/11/13

T

his is a very capable car and it just makes you feel safe and sound.

The engine on this car is the 3.0 TDi 245 bhp which has amazing performance considering the size of the car and proper off road capabilities unlike its competitors. I tested this on a beach in Wales and it was great fun and at no time did it struggle. Inside its very luxurious, it comes with Full leather, Sat Nav, Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Heated Front Seats, Front and Rear Parking System and lots more and this is the SE entry level car.

When VW redesigned this most recent model they have given it more ground clearance and an even better 4X4 system. VW have also re-vamped the front grille and rounded off the back end. There are not that many negatives, I suppose it’s a little plain looking and it really should have 7 seats or at least offer them as an option as the boot is so big. Compared to the BMW X5 or Audi Q7 this car is great value for money and its built on the same cassis as the Porsche Cayenne so also drives really well. Very smooth and responsive you would be happy commuting in this car and also you have the peace of mind when the bad weather comes that you’re not getting stuck. It is also very good on fuel to for the size of car and engine to. MPH = 39.2 Combine d Top speed = 137 0-60 = 7.6 CO2 = 189 On the road price £4 3.160 (Lease price £365+v at over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

Happier than other Employees

T

he Charted Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have reported that their research has shown that zero hours workers are more likely to be happy with their work-life balance than other employees on more standard contracts.

There has been a lot of negative press recently regarding zero hours contracts but our experience of them with many different clients has on the whole been very positive – an extremely useful tool from the employer’s point of view allowing them to quickly respond to peaks and troughs in their business and providing flexibility for the employee. The CIPD’s report argues that the use of these contracts has been “underestimated, oversimplified and unfairly demonised”. The CIPD surveyed over 2,500 workers and found that 60% of workers on zero hours contracts were equally as satisfied with their jobs as other workers at 59% and were on the whole more likely to be satisfied with their work-life balance than other workers (65% compared with 58%).

12 mkflyers central

Zero hours workers stated that they preferred that type of contract as it provided them with flexibility that suited their current circumstances – perhaps with caring responsibilities for children or adult relatives or to fit around another part-time role. 38% of workers on zero hours contracts confirmed that they would like to work increased hours but 52% said they were happy with theirs. There are approximately one million people throughout the UK or 3.1% of the workforce employed on these contracts. The report did highlight some bad practice amongst employers such as workers being penalised if they were unable to work certain hours or workers being given little or notice of work. The CIPD have recommended that employers review their use of these contracts on a regular basis ensuring that there is a robust business reason for their use.

A

s Christmas approaches it is fair to say that for most of us, healthy eating and diets will be thrown out the window. The attraction of a glass of sherry, a Christmas pudding and turkey are too great and I for one am happy to over indulge once a year over the festive season. However, while over indulgence is allowed now and again, there has been a lot of attention paid recently to ensuring our children are aware of the importance of healthy eating. The Governments school meal agenda, backed strongly by Jamie Oliver, has meant schools now have to provide nutritionally balanced meals and increased scrutiny has been given to the contents of packed lunch boxes. With this in mind, I was pleased to be invited to visit a local school to participate in World Milk Day to highlight to both staff and children the importance of ‘the white stuff’ to help us grow properly. Established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and celebrated in over 30 countries around the world, the goal of World School Milk Day is to celebrate children drinking milk in school and early years settings and promote its nutritional value. Incredibly, 189ml of milk contains nearly all the vitamins and nutrients of importance to humans, including over half of a child’s daily recommended allowance of calcium, which is vital to help build strong and healthy teeth and bones. t seems everyone is ‘getting lucky’ at Arcana Group Of Salons this year;

Despite having no less than SIX maternities affecting attendance at the small chain of hair and beauty salons since the summer, Arcana have been nominated for a hatrick of staff development and training awards both regionally and nationally! They are all feeling pretty lucky. Milton Keynes College nominated Debbie Elderton, salon founder, as one of Central Eastern’s best Apprenticeship Employers in the regional final of the National Apprenticeship Awards 2013. Arcana Group Of Salons (Hair, Beauty & Specialist Treatment Centres based in Crownhill and Shenley Brook End) were delighted to win ‘Nuclear Decommissioning Site Licence Companies Award’ for Medium Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards (regional heat) in October and have been put forward for the national title to be announced later this week. Arcana were personally addressed and commended in a letter from Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg:

achievements of employers like you, who go the extra mile to help their apprentices and succeed.” Arcana have furthermore been shortlisted in the Federation of Small Businesses (Buckinghamshire) Business Awards in the category of ‘Training & Development’ and await the results announced in a prestigious ceremony at Horwood House in December. Debbie Elderton, Salon Group Founder and General Manager for the Arcana Group, said: “To be recognised again, for our continued efforts and successes in the Apprenticeship Sector is an honour. As a company we have grown and been able to place even more young people in apprenticeship employment (in association with Milton Keynes College) which has in-turn benefited our business and allowed expansion and development of other staff opportunities and in-house training provision. We hope to continue to build on this achievement and further extend our education facilities; regardless of how many of the team take time to enjoy a little personal maternity leave in one hit!’’

“I would like to take this chance to congratulate Arcana Group Of Salons on your success at this year’s National Apprenticeship Awards. “Apprenticeships are at the heart of our drive for a stronger economy: equipping people of all ages with the skills employers need to help their businesses prosper and compete in a global market. “And, as we work to increase the opportunities for hard-working young to people to achieve their ambitions through high-quality apprenticeship training, it is vitally important that we celebrate the

PR - Top Tips To Promote Your Business PR is all about promoting and building enthusiasm for your products and services. When successful, you will create widespread awareness and drive up sales. Here are some simple steps for you to use to create a buzz for your business: 1. Know your market Successful PR is all about reaching the right audience with a message that is appropriate and meaningful to them. Without this, the rest of your PR actions will be virtually useless. 2. Learn about the media outlet before you contact them In defining your target audience, you will also know what they read and the websites they visit. It’s worth taking your time to educate yourself about the media outlets you are targeting to ensure your messaging is suitable and relevant for each audience. 3. Your message should be clear and concise At the centre of any PR campaign is your message. Make sure it’s clear, concise and to the point. If your message can’t be summarised in a few sentences, it’s too complicated and editors won’t read it. 4. Getting media coverage Newspaper coverage or a mention of your new product or service can go a long way towards creating a real buzz, so target both the local and national press as well as your industry’s trade publications. Often, the coverage you

18 mkflyers central

get in a trade publication will create the biggest noise, as its read by your competitors. 5. Nurture the local media Read the local publications, identify the journalists who cover your specific topic and give them a call to introduce yourself. Your relationship with journalists is very important but these relationships do take time to develop, so this time should be viewed as a long-term investment. 6. Write a feature article Write an article for your local newspaper or trade publication on a subject that relates to you or your business. If the article is well written and is specifically targeted to the readers of that publication, it could bring you the publicity you’re after 7. Persistence is vital When it comes to making your PR campaign a success, persistence is paramount. If you have a good plan, and devote enough time and energy to it, you will benefit from the positive publicity generated for your business.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people

M

Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business. “As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.
