POSITIVE LIVING Every soul is a work still in progress. Each one is on a journey to perfection... ‘You really do have the world at your feet.’ More of us today are worried and stressed than happy, healthy and relaxed, despite everything we have – or try to do. The problem is that in being this way we are not working with life’s own creative flow as well as we otherwise might; we make life more difficult than it need be for ourselves, often sabotaging what we aim to achieve – from within, through thoughts we think and attitudes we subconsciously harbour. From a very early age we are taught that life is hard. We see our parents struggle, we know all we too have been through, so this lesson becomes compounded even deeper – to form belief. Then because it is belief – we live it every day, and so a circle never ending becomes the truth that we then live by – day to day. We are part of life and life is part of us. The power that drives the planet, that drives the continuous force of nature, is also in us. We are nothing less than life’s own present physical, conscious link, in evolution. Nothing is prewritten within your DNA that you should not succeed in your life; that you should not be happy, healthy and successful in love and all that you will endeavour... In fact life itself is willing that ‘you do succeed’. It’s practically spurring you on, for in your success the energies that you feed it back are much better, purer, finer, more productive... and as you work with them - you will actually feel a shift as your life starts to flow better. Your energy levels will rise. Synchronicities will begin to increase. You’ll feel more in sync, more alert and more alive than you have for a long time. In the world that is yours you are the centre spoke of the wheel. All things connect to you – you connect to them. What happens in one sector will always affect another. If you fall and break – then all that you care about, family, work, friends, commitments, will suffer too. The repercussions will be visible to all, so it is important for many reasons that you stay strong. You are an individual soul, a being of pure energy and light, again whether you recognise this or not is irrelevant... You are important to life and to those who know and love you, you are important to the living world that you connect to and form part of – for

6 mkflyers central

without you there would be a hole, something important would be missing, and we all know that holes are a nuisance in any disguise. What is your life really about? Are you happy, fulfilled and working with your talents and strengths? What are your gifts? Do you use them? Have you set and reached goals? Is life working with you in unison or are you bombarded with problems and set backs? What is it you aim to achieve? What is your time on this planet about? When you begin to ask these kinds of questions – a shift occurs within your energy field and in your levels of conscious awareness. You no longer play a ‘blind’ game of life. You will open a door to new levels of understanding, which leads to new levels of growth and creativity in your own life. You begin to live from a perception of higher truth, soul purpose and the wisdom of your larger life purpose. You’ll be working life’s laws of attraction... When you look outside your usual perception – you begin to see wonderful things. Every day has a beat of its own. Each will contain something unique. Good or bad will depend on your viewpoint – but nothing is intended to harm or bring you down. Everything has purpose, a natural end or beginning, with reason, cause or effect at its core, for you or for others concerned. If life works with you – are you clear and concise in the requests that you make of it? Do you ask for what you need, productively, with clarity – and do you recognise when answers flow back? There is no such thing as a Reset/God Button in this real time living game of life, nor is there a pre-production rehearsal. For change to come in – we must work this world better, smarter, more effectively and efficiently, and that process begins with each of us – even now... We can try to make a difference, no matter how small, to aid life and the world we’ll leave behind for our children, or we can sit back, vedge out and play virtual games, it’s up to us... We can let time slip away, without ever having achieved what we came for – or we can be proud and active in the life that we own... We can make a difference with the time that we’ve spent here...

Customer is King at Christmas If every shop window in the land is to be believed, the festive season is well and truly in full swing. Whilst many businesses may be frantically trying to finish off projects before the Christmas shutdown, or be entrenched in developing marketing plans ready to hit the ground running in 2013, there is one activity which should not be overlooked. The lowly ‘customer Christmas card’. It has long been documented that retaining a customer is far more cost effective than finding a new one, so why are we always so focused on new customers, when we could have hundreds of supportive and loyal existing customers just waiting to be loved? Or at least acknowledged. Often we are so pre-occupied with driving new sales, that a few simple marketing activities aimed at existing customers could easily be more productive than mailing your product brochure to 10,000 unknown contacts. Considering this approach, the festive period offers each business a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with all their customers - however large or small their contribution to your turnover figures and importantly this should be done in

8 mkflyers central

a light hearted and friendly fashion, with not a sales message in sight. As with every marketing activity you undertake, the choice of design should be considered just as much as a new advertising campaign – you are still promoting your business and branding should not be thrown out the window in favour of a singing reindeer, just because someone in the office thinks it’s cute... But whatever style and format you use, be genuine in your messaging and your customers will appreciate the gesture. A well designed Christmas card not only highlights your appreciation for their ongoing support, it also works as a gentle reminder you’re still there and very much in business. And if you have a large customer base and chose an online version which can be emailed simply and cost effectively, this will in fact double as a useful data cleansing activity. And having an up-to-date list of contacts couldn’t be more timely, ready for you to launch into your 2013 sales and marketing activities.

MP’s Diary

By Iain Stewart MP, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South

I was honoured to take part in the Remembrance Day services across Milton Keynes on the 11 November.

the Rethink Mental Illness service at Fern Grove. For a long time emotional and mental illness has been stigmatised and in many cases people are reluctant to seek the help and support they need out of fear of being ostracised. The work being done by organisations like these two is vital in helping people with complex emotional or mental difficulties to live normal lives. Anybody can suffer from mental health problems, national studies suggest that in the UK, about 1 in 10 young people may experience a mental health problem or disorder where they may need help from a mental health specialist. Every Christmas I run a competition for local school children to design my Christmas card that I will send out to friends, family and colleagues, including the Prime Minister. I would like to extend a special thanks to pupils of Oxley Park Academy, Abbeys Primary School, Drayton Park School, Emerson Valley School, and Caroline Haslett Primary School, for their entries. The winning design will be announced at Milton Keynes Gallery on 14 December before being printed on over 300 cards. The runner up entries from each school will also feature on the back of the card.

The day’s services started with a wreath laying service at the Queensway Memorial in Bletchley, followed by another wreath laying service at St Mary’s Church. I was also invited to join members of the Royal British Legion for drinks and to meet some of their volunteers who were receiving awards for their long service to the charity. Following this I headed to Stony Stratford to join local residents and the Mayor for the Remembrance Service at the memorial on Horsefair Green. It is so important that we take the time to remember the dedication and sacrifice of our armed service personnel. Every year I try and do my bit to help the RBL raise money through the Poppy Appeal. I was happy do my bit and hope they exceed their fundraising target of £42million. I also recently spent some time visiting with City Counselling Centre and also listened to the experiences of users of

10 mkflyers central

Residents of a Cambridge Street hostel are aiming to scoop this year’s Christmas number one, with their record ‘Cry of the Homeless’. The hostel is one of Orbit Heart of England’s Independent Living schemes, which provides temporary accommodation for homeless adults with support needs relating to drug or alcohol misuse or mental health issues. I joined some of the residents as they listened to the single for the first time after studio production. ‘Cry of the Homeless’ is due for release in early December, and will be available to download from iTunes and Amazon. It can also be purchased directly from the Jesus Celebration Centre. Finally, I would like to use this opportunity to wish readers a truly Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mazars on pole for SS Tube Technology Mazars’ corporate finance team, led by Oliver Hoffman and Alex Baskeyfield, has advised on the sale of an Oxfordshire autosport manufacturer to two motorsport enthusiasts. SS Tube Technology, based near Witney, has been acquired by Scott Roberts and Mike Dewhirst through their investment vehicle Polar Venture Management. The company designs and manufactures high performance exhausts for the motorsport and performance car sectors. SSTT systems are used in Formula 1, the Indy Racing League, Le Mans, NASCAR, the German Touring Car Championship and the World Rally Championship. The business, which employs 25 people, with a turnover of £3 million, is located in the heart of Britain’s motorsport valley. Dr Roberts commented: “SS Tube Technology has a tremendous reputation for excellence in quality and delivery and works in close partnership with its customers around the world. “We are confident we can build on this reputation and grow the business into other high value-added technical sectors in the years to come, creating new jobs in Oxfordshire in the process. “We are passionate about motorsport and providing excellence to our customers and

14 mkflyers central

from the moment that Mazars introduced us to SSTT we were determined to reach a deal.” Alex Baskeyfield, corporate finance manager at Mazars, said: “Britain has a great pedigree in motorsport engineering and SSTT has earned an impressive reputation. I have really enjoyed working with the company’s founders to find a new home for SSTT and believe it will go from strength to strength with Scott and Mike” Schofield Sweeney and Speechly Bircham advised on the legal aspects.

10 Simple Steps to a Successful Office Party Make sure your office party is a success for everyone, before and after the event … Decking the halls with boughs of holly for the office party is all very well. But after the event, employers can find it’s not always the season to be jolly. Angela Rhodes, human resources consultant from Crispin Rhodes Ltd, explains... As an employer you need to be aware of the potential pitfalls of the annual festive bash. Otherwise you can find yourself facing a number of different grievances and costly claims from employees. However, you don’t have to be a party pooper to keep on the right side of the law. Staying informed, taking good advice and putting in place some simple precautionary measures should stand you in good stead – and it means that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable celebration. 1. Remember that your Christmas party is a work activity As the employer, you are responsible for the safety and the actions of your staff at your Christmas party – just like with any other business activity. This applies whether you’re having a full-scale sit-down dinner or simply spending an evening at the local 10-pin bowling alley. A ‘works do’ is part of work life, and the same principles apply when it comes to looking after your staff. 2. Make sure food and drink is safe and appropriate If you’re providing your own food, make sure it’s stored properly before the event and that it presents no risk to health. And whether or not you’re doing your own catering, be sensitive to different religious codes, including those surrounding alcohol. If you’re serving certain meats as part of a buffet (e.g. pork), make sure it’s kept away from other food. Make sure you have a choice of food and drink, so that everyone feels comfortable, valued and respected. There’ll be less chance of anyone feeling offended. 3. Set boundaries At an event where people can let their hair down, people can also be tempted to let their behaviour slide too. It’s mostly harmless fun but when other employees find themselves coerced into things they’re uncomfortable with, whether it’s drinking or over-familiarity, that’s when the problems can start. It’s how you manage the event that makes the difference. Set out some clear guidelines and make sure everyone is aware of them before the event. Make sure employees know at the outset that they’re accountable for their own behaviour and that they should act at all times as they would at work. This doesn’t have to be a dampening exercise; instead it’s a gentle way of getting people to commit to making the event a success for the whole company. 4. Be careful what you promise A couple of drinks and an informal chat with an employee at a party can easily lead to you promising things you didn’t really mean. It could be a new budget for a particular project or a hint at a promotion up the ladder. You may not intend to create something legally binding over a glass of wine but the employee could certainly understand it that way and call you to account in later weeks and months. 5. Make sure you take an ‘inclusive’ approach As in everyday life, discrimination (whether intended or not) on the basis of sexual orientation, race, gender, disability, religion or other

18 mkflyers central

strongly-held beliefs is a definite no-no. If you allow employees to bring partners to the annual party, you must include same-sex partners. If you use an outside venue, make sure the building – and the dance floor – is accessible to wheelchair users. If you hire entertainment, be sure that it will not cause offence to members of your staff. It’s details like these that can save or sink your reputation as an employer. 6. Have an observer Choose one of your managers to act as a discreet ‘nanny’. If they observe someone drinking in excess or beginning to harass other staff, the observer can have a quiet word and remind that person of their responsibility to the company and to their fellow employees. It’s far better to do that than have a raft of complaints from disgruntled employees when you get back to the office. And most staff will respect your intervention in this way. 7. Be fair with the logistics Choose a venue that matches the kind of atmosphere you want to create – and one that is conducive to the flow of the evening and the interaction you want. Take into account how far and wide people live in relation to the venue. If budgets permit, you could organise transport and/or accommodation as a goodwill gesture and to reduce the temptation for people to drink and drive. Also, issue staff with details of taxi companies and self-funded accommodation options. You could also make sure your event ends before public transport stops. Also, if you’re arranging an evening event, give people enough time to unwind and change clothes after work; it’ll make a positive difference to the spirit of the evening. 8. Delve into the detail If you’re having a party at your own office premises, spend some time making the space party-safe. It usually only needs a few simple steps. Remove floor hazards that could trip people up; make it difficult for people to put their drinks on top of office equipment; plan carefully where to put your tree so as not to obstruct exits or risk injury if it topples over. And make sure people don’t stand on swivel chairs when they’re putting up the decorations! 9. Show that you do not condone heavy drinking Act wisely when it comes to alcohol. Never allow under-18s to drink, and always consider the safety of employees who may not be fully sober the following day, especially if they drive or operate machinery as part of their job. Also, beware of the pitfalls of the free bar! Limit the number of drinks you provide and warn staff to take it easy. An employer may be held responsible for drink-related disasters. For example, three employees from a well-known company, who were involved in an alcohol-induced fight, subsequently won their claim for unfair dismissal because the employer had provided the alcohol. 10. And finally … enjoy the event! Common sense strategies can save you a lot of money and hassle, both at the event itself and afterwards. And once they’re in place, you’ll be on course for a party to remember – for all the right reasons! Plus, you’ll have less absence and conflict in the days and weeks that follow.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2012, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2012, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2011. Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.” Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.
