POSITIVE LIVING Be who you were born to be…

Who are you today? Why is your life as it is? What makes you choose all you do - from the millions of variable options available always? What makes you actually ‘you’? You are much more than you see in a mirror. You operate on many levels, some clearly seen, but more are completely invisible to the normal conscious workings of daily behaviour and life. If you only see half of life’s picture - you can only live half a life story, so let’s view this from a few more perspectives, let’s rewind… From a personal perspective you strive to be recognised, to be loved, understood and of value. You work and play hard; you give life your very best, often more than is actively called for, whenever and wherever you can. Yet despite all you give, despite what you change, clear away, want, need, try or do, you still actively struggle with love and life. From a very early age you were taught that love was conditional, that it depended on good behaviour, right doing, right belief and right action, but what if you now were to learn that all this was not necessarily true? What if you had been loved all along? If you were free to make mistakes, for after all we’re only human, and that your best at all times was good enough? What if you realised that no aspect of character could ever be hidden, and that everything you ever thought, said or did impacted life someway, somehow? What if life could only deliver what first had been freely put in – a bit like stocking up stores in a cupboard, and that with more understanding, self-recognition and very little effort, you could easily change things around to be better? From a personal perspective life can often be difficult, especially if you find that you seem to fight daily just to keep things afloat, but there itself is one of life’s hidden keys... The very fact that you have to fight! You know very well the battles you have fought, won or lost, just to live, simply to get to where you are now. You know the journeys of your parents, their fights, their highs and lows inside out. Even before birth you were programmed that life would be difficult, and your conditioning since then has compounded that belief, for whatever we ‘believe’ – we attract…. What if every thought, word or intent that you personally produced through free will, no matter how small or large, inconsequential or seemingly innocent, actually programmed real life coming in? This would mean that you directly create and affect your own reality and that behind everything you do – there is a why and a reason,

that behind every action a payback, something you want or don’t want in return. People everywhere are doing the same subconscious things they always have. Each is looking for where they fit best, for where they feel happy, alive, connected and contented; each is trying to live a life that flows freely, that feels easy and relatively good. (I am I) You have to understand how YOU are the only driving force in your life. You are at no one’s mercy. No ONE can control any aspect of who you are and what you do. No one means to harm you – no matter how tough things can get. Most are just living a story they too are creating themselves. But right now you are lucky! You are beginning to realise… No one needs to come to your rescue – for you are not lost. You are your own hero and you call the shots. I am the ONE who will help you as soon as you realise that you can ask! No one else can fulfil your soul journey, your destiny or your emerging potential. You are important beyond anything you can think of. You alone choose your route to be happy. (I am I) Do you remember what life goals you had in your youth? What inspired or held your attention? What you thought you once wanted to become? What did you believe life was like or would offer? And why do you feel different now? You have trained for the whole of your life to get to this point – so don’t give up and stop growing now. You are exactly the person you should be right now – to grow beyond karma - to turn your life into success. (I am I) You are a powerful creator – the time is now ripe for your talents and gifts to spring forth. Everyone needs what you came here to share – to contribute as your gift to this time frame of now. (I am I) Are you ready to discover who you really are?

MP’s Diary

By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North

I have learnt during my time as an MP that if you really want to make a difference and get something changed in parliament you have to carry on raising it. The phrase “if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again” seems particularly apt. One issue where I have been doing just that is Khat, a plant which is chewed and widely used by the Somalian community.

My campaign started when I was contacted 4 years ago by members of the Somalian Community based in Milton Keynes concerned by the affect the drug was having of the social cohesion and family breakdown with the community and associated health concerns. Following various meetings with people from the community, I subsequently pressed for reform on numerous occasions in Parliament, asked written and oral questions and held a debate in the House of Commons in January 2012. I also had a meeting with the Home Secretary last year to highlight the problems being faced by the widespread use of the plant. It was therefore with delight that I welcomed her announcement that Khat was to be banned and categorised as a Class C drug. I am particularly pleased for the community that I have been working so closely with trying to highlight that the UK is out of step with the rest of Northern Europe in not banning Khat and the growing evidence that the UK is being used as a regional hub for the illegal onward trafficking of Khat. Persistence really does pay off. Last month saw Armed Forces Week being celebrated and it was with pride that the Mayor and I received a plaque from City resident Gunner Frank Apeadu to mark his return from Afghanistan. Frank, who comes from Milton Keynes and is a Gunner with 32 Royal Artillery Regiment based in Salisbury, has been on two tours in Afghanistan and

8 mkflyers central

one of Iraq. He presented Milton Keynes with a plaque with a map of Afghanistan and the flags of those who had helped nation building on it. It was a great honour to meet with Frank who has served his country on numerous occasions. It is so important to commemorate and celebrate the work our Servicemen and women contribute abroad and receiving Frank’s plaque, which he has kindly given to the city, will act as a good reminder to all past the celebration of Armed Forces Week, of what has been achieved by our forces in Afghanistan and beyond. We are very lucky in Milton Keynes to be well looked after by numerous charitable organisations. I went to visit Healthwatch (formerly LinkMK) who launched in April. They are an independent patient’s watchdog who confidentially log complaints about the Health and Social Care services in Milton Keynes and report any trends in the problems service users face. If you have any problems or need to be sign posted to the correct service I would strongly recommend you get in touch with Alan, Carol and the team over in Kiln Farm who have already made a real difference since they launched in April, you can contact them on 01908 266 696. As ever, if there is anything I can help you with or if you would like me to visit your organisation you can get hold of me on 01908 686830.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

The New Mercedes Benz CLA-220 CDI AMG Sport Auto Reviewed 05/07/13 Firstly, I have to say this car looks amazing! It’s a real head turner, with the great looks of a coupe but the practicality of a saloon, and a really good boot size too!!

Inside the cabin this car looks very appealing. The seats are very comfortable and there’s more than enough room in the back for 2 adults, yet still feels like a sports car. The one we tested had the Becker Sat Nav System, which is good value at around £500 as an additional option. The only thing I was unsure about was the screen on the dash, which is used for the Radio, Sat Nav and general Car Function. To me it looks like Mercedes have just glued an ipad to the dash. They have also done this with the New A and B classes, which is a shame as they are all great cars overall. Driving the car was a pleasure. We tested the 220 diesel engine, which for me is a little underpowered but delivered a very smooth ride. The Auto Gearbox was a dream, and also comes with a Sports Mode Function. The sweeping roofline and sculpted surfaces enable remarkable aerodynamic performance. The drag coefficient of just 0.23 is the lowest on any production car for any budding F1 drivers. This engine is tried and tested in Mercedes top selling C-Class range, so it’s very reliable, extremely fuel efficient, and the servicing costs won’t break the bank either. The CLA is currently available in C180 petrol and a C220 diesel engine - which we tested. The model lines available are a Standard Sport and an AMG

10 mkflyers central

Sport. If your budget can stretch to it, go for the AMG Sport as it is much prettier inside and out, although saying that both models have a great level of standard spec - Bluetooth, Auto Lights and Wipers, Parking Sensors, Cruise Control, with safety features that come second to none. Numerous Airbags to keep you safe, located by the knees, windows, doors and dash. Collision Prevention Assist is another great safety feature, which will warn you if you’re driving too close to another car. Attention Assist is great too, so if you get sleepy on a long journey it will know and alert you as sensors monitor your driving. It’s even got an Active Bonnet that knows when you have hit something, or someone, and the bonnet will rise to lessen the impact. Overall I would give this car an 8/10. The main downside for me is the underpowered engine. The main upside is its amazing looks!! MPG = 62.8 Combined Top speed =143 0-60 =8.2 CO2=117 On the road price £29,355.00 (Lease price £299+vat over 3 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

Information is Beautiful! These days there is information everywhere. Every day, every hour, maybe even every minute we’re looking at and absorbing information from our phones, tablets, TVs…the list is endless. So the challenge for us is to translate and visualise all this information in an appealing and digestible way. After all, 50% of the brain is dedicated to visual functions, and images are processed faster than text. So, say hello to the Infographic! Whilst this is not a new idea, we’ve been sharing information visually for thousands of years, the internet and particularly social media, have given us the ability to access, create and crucially share vast amounts of information. And it is this sharing that is crucial from a marketing viewpoint. So, gone are long reports with reams of statistic data tables and lists, replaced with manageable chunks of visual understanding. And, if we can make people understand, they are going to find it useful and share it, getting your message across to potentially far more people. Infographics can tell a story,

12 mkflyers central

compare data sets or simply show something complicated in a dynamic and straight-forward way. Therefore a good infographic has a mixture of great design, a timely and relevant story, good data and shareability. And, people are sharing. US online news outlet Bitrebels ran a recent test which showed their infographics shared on Twitter got 832% more retweets than images and articles about similar subjects. Opposite is an infographic we recently did for F1 Consultancy. They had just reached their 20th Birthday and wanted to compare the IT landscape in 2013 with that in 1993. So research was key, finding reliable, accurate sources and then choosing a style that suited their brand and the subject matter. And over the coming months we’ll be doing more, from explaining a complex insurance product to showing the journey from planks of wood to bi-folding doors. We’d love to help you engage with your customers in this dynamic and exciting way too!

MP’s Diary

By Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South

July is always a busy month for MPs as many schools and community groups hold their end of term carnivals, shows, presentations and the like. Having warm, sunny weather for much of the month has an added bonus. One event that I was delighted to attend was the ‘Train Day’ organised by local charities, Carers MK and Social Eyes. It was a day for families with children, who are either disabled or have

additional needs, to socialise and receive support. Representatives from Parents and Carers Alliance (PACA) also attended and they kindly provided funding to enable adjustments to be made so that the train coach could accommodate a wheelchair. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with carers and their families and I am grateful to Anne Matthews from Carers MK and Steve Jones of Social Eyes for inviting me along. These two charities would like to hear from any parent with caring responsibility. Carers MK can be contacted on 01908 231703 while Social Eyes are on 07952734723. There is always a ‘first’ in every MP’s career and I recently had mine. For the first time in my Parliamentary career, I had the opportunity of formally declaring a loo open for use. The Bletchley & District Allotment Association, which has been established in Eaton Avenue since 1926, lacked a toilet facility for members. With the aid of a £9,000

14 mkflyers central

grant from the Big Lottery Fund, they now have a waterless composting toilet. I am grateful to Carol Smith, Doug Sellers and all the other residents who made welcome at their Open Day. In addition, I was pleased to join supporters at Milton Keynes Rugby Club for the MK Rugby 7s tournament. Local sport is a really important part of a strong community and I was delighted to see so many people turning out to support the teams and fund raising efforts of the club on the day. They put on a great day that was fun for people of all ages and

I hope many youngsters were impressed enough to give rugby a ‘try’ themselves. I’m looking forward to going back to MK Rugby Club to watch some more games in the future. I would like to hear from you if you feel that there is a local charity or community group that I should visit to see the work they are doing in Milton Keynes. Please get in touch using the details below. Email: iain.stewart.mp@parliament.uk Tel: 01908 686830 Postal address: House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

Future Reserves 2020 – White Paper Announcement by Secretary of State for Defence The Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, announced on 3rd July, 2013 the results of the White Paper on Future Reserves 2020. The detail can be found at the links below, but here are some generic bullet points summarising the white paper. Future Reserves 2020 (FR20) was the result of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review which demonstrated how the armed forces would be restricted to meet future threats. It is designed to deliver a new structure to meet the needs of a smaller, more flexible and agile Armed Forces in order to meet threats as they evolve and will involve an increase in the proportion and operational involvement of Reserves of all three of the UK’s Armed Forces. The Reservists will be gradually integrated into a single “Whole Force” with their Regular counterparts and will require being more available for training, readiness and deployment. The “Territorial Army” will be renamed “Army Reserve”. The White Paper recognises the pivotal role played by Employers and families in making Reservists available for service. Incentives for Employers are listed below from a Ministry of Defence publication entitled “Reserves in the Future Force 2020: Valuable and Valued”: “We will provide new financial awards to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises when their reservists are mobilised. We will revise the financial assistance regulations to ensure that the levels of financial assistance provided to employers are appropriate and streamlined. We will better explain the benefits of reserve service and extend civilian accreditation of skills, training and experience provided by the military. We will introduce a new scheme to recognise supportive employers underpinned by the Corporate Covenant We will develop an open and predictable relationship by: Ensuring that reservists notify employers of their reserve status subject to security considerations Notifying employers of the training programme annually Providing notice of mobilisation and periods when a reservist is at high readiness for mobilisation Providing relevant feedback on what a reservist ahs achieved during a period of reserve service. We will introduce a new National Relationship Management scheme to establish strategic personnel relationships with major employer organisations,

16 mkflyers central

relevant trade bodies and the largest employers. We will work with employers and education organisations to develop opportunities for both the employer, the reservist and Defence in the transition period between education and work, including for those no in education, employment or training.” A number of high level key messages have been published and the following relate to employers: “Key Message: Employers play a key role in enabling reservists to take their place in defence of the Nation. Their support has been crucial to the mobilisation of our Reservists in such large numbers over the last 10 years. The future relationship may need some incentives, which could include a cross-Government commitment to support employers who encourage volunteering; the public sector will take the lead in setting an example. Key Message: Following publication of the White Paper on Future Reserves 2020 there will be a natural nervousness about the new conditions of Reserve Service until they have been seen ‘in action’, but it can be seen from the White Paper that the MoD will attempt to match any increased commitment with increased incentive for employers. Deployments (in the foreseeable future) are not anticipated to exceed current levels to any great degree and any employer concerns will be listened to. The MoD will ensure that use of the Reserves is as predictable as possible to help Reservists, their families and employers to plan ahead. Key Message: Defence recognises that the needs of employers must be understood and respected; as part of a wider Defence initiative, the Armed Forces will enter into a dialogue and partnerships with the employers of reservists. Through partnering with employers, we seek to identify and better exploit those areas which mutually benefit the employer, the Forces and the individual, and pilot projects under the Partnering for Talent programme will be in place from September.” If you are interested in finding out more, the White Paper ‘Reserves in the Future Force 2020’ and the Army Reserve’s future basing and structure are available on the Ministry of Defence website. Lastly, a number of background documents will be accessible through the SERFCA website by the end of the week. Charity networking event for Ride High Kilimanjaro climb Stuart Bradley and Richard Carter, owners of local businesses Bobbyflash and Richard Carter Painting and Decorating Services, hope to take a step closer to reaching their fundraising target of £8,000 with a charity networking event at The Chrysalis Theatre on 29 August. The event is designed to help the duo to raise funds before they climb the world’s tallest freestanding mountain, Kilimanjaro, in September in aid of Milton Keynes children’s charity Ride High. “We are excited to announce that the entertainment for the evening will be provided by some of the London West End’s finest performers courtesy of Rosendale Productions. Guests will be in for a special treat,” said Stuart, director of graphic design agency Bobbyflash. “The Chrysalis Theatre in Willen is a great venue for this kind of event. There will be a business exhibition and some fantastic prizes on offer. Most of all we are looking forward to raising money for local disadvantaged children.” Bobbyflash sponsors Ride High, which helps these children by teaching them to look after and ride horses, with design services. Richard decided to join Stuart in the climb so that he can give something back to the local community. “We are fortunate that local businesses are willing to support the charity through this

event. Bartletts Tree Experts have offered a full size tree and planting service as a prize. Phil Fanning, head chef at the Michelin starred Paris House restaurant in Woburn, has also donated a ‘Be a chef for the day’ experience.” Milton Keynes catering outfit, Gem Bespoke Catering, is providing finger food for the event. “If you are a business that would like to offer a prize or you are interested in exhibiting at this event then we’d be grateful if you would get in touch. This will be a quality evening of networking, entertainment and fundraising. Tickets are only £20 so people should book their place as soon as possible,” concluded Stuart.
