MP’s Diary

By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North

There has been much discussion around changes in our city over the past few weeks. In particular there have been some large planning applications which would see more houses being built and with that new schools, doctors surgeries and other key infrastructure. I have always been an advocate of the “I before E” principle, infrastructure before expansion and believe strongly it is key that it is maintained as we grow larger as a city.

What I find so impressive is the way local voluntary organisations cope with the rapid rate at which we expand. I recently visited STaSS, a city wide HIV Charity, offering support and assistance to those who suffer from the disease. Giving both emotional and practical help, STaSS and their volunteers ensure people with HIV don’t feel alienated from our community. With a high level of undetected HIV prevalent in Milton Keynes STaSS not only works with people who are HIV positive, but also offers HIV tests for free across the city. I was pleased to be able to have a test practiced on me and would urge others to do the same-you don’t even see the needle! Another organisation which is coping with the increase demand for its service is the Food Bank. Offering food

and other goods to those most in need, the local Food Bank is simply invaluable. I was pleased to be able to go and help stack the shelves and put together food parcels for a morning recently and was impressed by the amount of donations made. It is a great example of how we are supporting each other in our community but need is great and so donations are always appreciated. Our Food Bank has a great website which tells you what goods are most needed and how you can make a financial contribution. You can view it at www. mkfoodbank.org.uk . With MK being a sporting city I enjoyed trying out a sport, not usually associated with Milton Keynes, by joining the team down at Haversham Sailing Club. With courses available for novices (especially youngsters over the school holidays) and race days held regularly on weekends, it really is a blast. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken out on a dingy, feeling the wind in hair and the clubhouse bar afterwards was also good fun. With the weather having been so good, I would strongly recommend people explore it as a new sport and get in touch with the club.

The closure of the Chamber of Commerce in Milton Keynes a few months ago was met with great sadness with all who were associated with it. It was therefore with great delight I met with Paul Griffiths who has set up an entirely new organisation, accredited by the British Chamber of Commerce-Milton Keynes Chamber. We have the largest number of small businesses in the country and have been named as the best place to do business outside of London in the UK so there is no doubt there is a need for such an important asset to businesses. Paul , who has been Chief Executive of the very successful Northampton Chamber of Commerce for some time, has already signed up many local businesses, big and small, in MK who will benefit from HR advice, briefings and other support. I am looking forward to working closely with him and the new Chamber. As always, if I can be of any assistance to you or you would like me to visit your organisation then please contact me on 01908 686830.

The New Citroen DS3 Cabrio Reviewed 03/08/13

Citroen DS3 Goes Topless I have to say at first I wasn’t sure about this car as it’s like a half convertible but it did grow on me.

The DS3 has been a massive success for Citroen. They have really gone after the Mini and Audi A1 market, and with its great looks and drive, there’s no surprise they have shifted 36,000 of them in the UK alone. So it is only natural they have now come out with a Cabrio model - there is currently only a 1.6 petrol version but they are releasing a diesel later on in the year. I tested the 1.6 THP 155 in a D-sport model and it was a good spec with a very nippy engine. The main negative is that when the roof is down full, you can’t see behind you, but the positives definitely out way the bad; like you can sit 3 people in the back (which is unusual on a soft top) and the boot is great when the roof is up, so ideal for the school runs if you can live with putting the seat up every time someone gets in the back as its only comes in a 3dr. You can still personalise your DS3 with different coloured roofs and mirrors to the car, and you can

even get purple leather if you’re that way inclined! The drive is very smooth and quiet, and with a great stereo with bluetooth, & lots of gloss and stainless steel, the inside feels like a real quality car. It even has a button in the car you can press and call Citroen if you have a problem with the car or you have broken down and it will connect you directly to Citroens help line!! The diesel will be the one to look out for as the petrol version is a bit thirsty and if you can, stretch to the D-sport + that comes with nice little extras like leather as standard. MPH = 47.9 Combined Top speed =132 0-60 =8.2 CO2=137 On the road price £19,136 (Lease price £199+vat over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

POSITIVE LIVING You are worth so much more than you know…

Where you are now is where you should be. You chose it yourself bit by bit with actions and decisions you’ve dismissed or activated along your unfolding timeline. You are in charge of what you do or don’t do every moment. Why would you believe any different? You have a place in society and in your family, that’s entirely unique. Without you there would be a hole, like a tear in a net, like a missing piece in a puzzle. You have a distinct role to play in the ‘present’, the now time that you have in your custody. You are a much needed link for life, time and others to connect to. You’ve set the scene and the pace, and you’re now playing the part of your choice. But do you ever stop to look around and take stock of what is actually playing out in real time? Do you ever step out of your story to see life from a different perspective, as though you could look in from the outside, to see what others see and expect or get from you, not from illusion or ego but in truth? Do you ever take a second glance at what it is that you’re actually creating? During youth we are so busy learning and building that we barely have time to sit still. The life we live seems to happen of its own accord and we simply have to show up - to keep up. Then we’re set free. The world is ours to sample or partake as we wish. Sometimes we go crazy, but sometimes we are like fish in a pond. We move and grow within the parameters of what we know – or think we should do, rather than from the understanding that we are free to choose anything. Yet what is your journey about? What are you creating? Why do you choose all you do? (I am I) The truth is that you probably don’t know, that you’ve built up a pattern of things you always do, so you do them. You don’t push any limits. You’re just getting by… But is that enough? Is what you have built so far - your soul reason for being? Yes, you now have commitments, but even those you either chose or fell into. You are responsible for your children until they are grown; you work to pay bills

and to be able to live as you choose; but again, what is your life really about? What do you do with your time? What will you take with you as your proudest attainment, what will be your personal offering back to life? At this point some people feel down – but you mustn’t. You should be glad that you’re addressing this now, while you still have the opportunity to do something about it. Anything! Whatever you choose to be or to do, or just want to give back, will be adequate. Your best effort will always be sufficient, for at least there’ll be movement… Don’t doubt that you can do it, or that you might not be good enough. Just have a go, simply try… You have a chance to be the person you wish… (I am I) Life is a gift. It’s not really very long once you’ve put into place things like family, work and building your home. In youth you probably had desires and dreams about what life would be like, of what you wanted to be, do or sample. Perhaps you should try to remember. Don’t live your desires out through your children; do them yourself – for they are your dreams – not theirs. They’ll have their own, built up through a mixture of your thoughts and theirs. They have different things to accomplish and do, with different triggers and goals to reach also. The greatest gifts you can give them are freedom and independence; the freedom to be themselves, meaning mistakes they’ll make too, under the loving safety net of the family umbrella that you’ve so far created. Give to yourself the same love and consideration… Be patient and kind, not angry and down on your achievements and body. Take as long as you need to rekindle. Begin to slowly rethink and redraw the fortress you have steadfastly built. Once all basic needs have been met, look around, begin to expand and explore. This is a huge world, and you can see, use and try whatever you wish, just be kind to whomever you meet and enjoy all the things you’ll encounter. (I am I) Your life is not over – it’s just in a place of change and transition. A whole new chapter is dawning – and you too birthed to become part of it… (I am I) Are you ready to unleash your true potential?

Protecting Your Investment No matter how the economy performs, many people still find that original art work is something they like to speculate in. Whether you invest in a local artist or a listed name it is very important that you check out the provenance of the materials used and make absolutely sure that it is framed appropriately. Oil paintings for example

a few routine checks; corroding picture wire, insects under the glass, any evidence of discolouration, cracked or chipped glass and the sealing tape on the back of the frame peeling away, these are just a few signs that the protection the frame should be providing your item, has been compromised. Thankfully the majority of these problems can usually be rectified without the need of a total reframe, and it is something we are able to help you with‌ Handmade picture frames can be a very cost effective way to transform a space and at Ciqo Artworks our experience has told us it is always best were possible to provide our initial consultation at our clients address. Discover the legend of According to legend, during the 16th century, at the small hilltop town of Colle Sannita in Southern Italy, humble servants ‘invented’ a nourishing, tasty snack that was passed on to others who worked in the surrounding fields. This was made from the left-over meat and vegetables from the lavish banquets held by their Lord and master, Duke Carlo Iazeolla. The filling snack later became a source of sustenance that helped the poor people survive the severe bad weather and famine that swept across the region during the 17th century that became known as the ‘Century of Darkness’. Gradually the snack (still devoid of a name) and consisting of meat such as pork belly or beef rolled in bread dough, became more refined. It was adopted by the youngest brother of the Paschitti family who had built the first house on land in the nearby ancient village of Decorata. The lad had been fed the snack by his favourite uncle, Antonio Zeolla (nicknamed Zizi) and when he was old enough he inherited the recipe from his uncle and ... not knowing what to call the sandwich, simply gave it the name ‘Pane di Zizi’ (Uncle’s bread). This in time became known as the PANZINI. In the traditional Italian way, the recipe for the Panzini has been passed down through generations of the Paschitti family that now can be found living far away from their Italian origins in New York, Miami, the State of Ohio, London, Essex and ... yes, Milton Keynes ... where one branch of the family, the Zeolla’s own La Collina. Planting

daffodils

Last Spring my neighbour admired my display of daffodils. “Barely any of mine have flowered this year,” she said, “What’s your secret? Your’s look better every year!” I was stumped. How hard is it to plant a daffodil? Dig a hole somewhere round September time and pop the bulb in pointy end upwards - job done! Except, when I broke down what’s involved, it’s not actually that simple. To produce a mass of bulbs which flower for a prolonged period year on year requires thought and preparation. First, choose the right bulbs. Pick the largest, firmest bulbs you can find. Then plant them in a deep hole at least 8 inches / 20cm and preferably 10 inches / 25 cm deep, in small groups. Most people plant their daffs too near the surface. This means they’re likely to dry out. Dry bulbs lack the food and moisture required to build up reserves for the following year. This results in lots of grassy leaves and not many flowers.

Once the daffodils have flowered leave the foliage untouched for six weeks before shearing it off. This gives enough time for the bulbs to reabsorb nutrients from the leaves.

Unfortunately daffodil foliage is untidy stuff and in a small suburban garden it can be very unsightly. There are two ways around this… The first is to treat daffodils as annuals and plant them in potting compost in aquatic baskets among the other plants. Once the flowers have gone the basket may be dug up and the bulbs discarded on the compost heap. The second way is to plant dwarf varieties. That way you can enjoy the flowers without worrying about the foliage. Time to get planting!

Best Daffodil Varieties Trumpet Daffodils have big trumpets, at least as long as the petals. Arctic Gold is a deeply saturated yellow Beersheba is a stunning white variety Large Cupped have trumpets over a third the length of the petals. Border Beauty has a striking orange trumpet and dark centre. Pink Charm is an unusual white variety with a salmon tinged trumpet. Dwarf varieties Nanus Midget is tiny but perfectly formed. February Gold is stunning and for a splash of colour, Jet Fire with it’s orange trumpets takes some beating.

Additionally, the charity is always looking for volunteers to help out, raise awareness, offer support and fundraise. So if you want to help yourself, help others or help the charity get involved! For more information please visit www.climbyourmountain.org or contact the founder, Charlie Wardle, by email info@climbyourmountain.org

For people throughout the UK, dealing with incontinence is a common situation Incontinence can have both emotional and practical impact for the person concerned and so can have a large effect on the quality of life enjoyed, but a few simple steps can make a big difference. Here are a few easy ways to help someone who is living with incontinence: • Make sure there is an easy and unobstructed path to the toilet and that it is easy to find. Leaving the toilet light on at night and/or nightlights can make it easier to get there in a hurry. Putting a commode, bedpan or urinal close to the bed or chair may also be an alternative if mobility is limited. • Increasing a person’s mobility is also a factor in encouraging regular toilet use and increasing the likelihood of reaching the toilet when needed. Regular walking or the use of assistance such as a walking stick or frame can help. • To avert incidents as best as possible, use the bathroom regularly (once every couple of hours, or even once every hour). If caring for someone

provide plenty of time and privacy so that they don’t feel pressured and have enough time to empty their bladder or bowels. • Be prepared for any incidents that may occur. Keep a good stock of absorbent products and hygiene products handy for wherever you may need them (and an easy means of disposing of them hygienically), try not to focus too much on any incident and deal with it in a calm and organised manner. For more advice on how to manage incontinence effectively visit our website at www.allaboutincontinence.co.uk. Allanda are incontinence experts and one of the U.K.’s leading independent suppliers of incontinence products. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

TIME FOR A CHANGE 2013 has been a very busy year so far for Ian and Julie Bowden. Ian had been fitting bathrooms for over 30 years, and before Christmas 2012 decided it was time for a change and gave his son John the bathroom installation business (MK-Bathrooms.com). Keeping within the bathroom industry, MK-Bathrooms. net showroom was born. Due to the large number of bathrooms Ian has fitted over the years he knew exactly which bathroom brands were of a superior and lasting quality, and also provided good value for money. Armed with the confidence this knowledge gave him the hunt for a showroom was on. Being Newport Pagnell residents Ian and Julie were convinced Newport Pagnell was the right venue for the shop. When the old Beehive Interiors store next to the Co-Op in the High Street became vacant it was all systems go! Christmas was a blur of painting, constructing display bays and sourcing suppliers. Ian and Julie opened MK-Bathrooms.net showroom on

the 3rd January 2013 and have never looked back. Business is booming, people appreciate the friendly personal service and the depth of knowledge Ian has as a bathroom fitter. No enquiry is too big or too small, and both work hard to provide customers with whatever they require, with access to over 40,000 bathroom products. MKBathrooms.net now use Ian and Julie’s sons John and Jacob for installations, so it really is a one stop family business! From a free on site visit & 3D CAD design service if required, free written quotation, free delivery service and a free installation quotation, MK-Bathrooms.net provide great customer service!

Rise in car accident claims during holiday season It may be hard to believe that most traffic accidents occur during the warmer summer months.

ChipsAway is the UK’s leading brand in minor automotive paintwork repairs, fixing damage such as scratches, bumper scuffs and kerbed alloys within a matter of hours and at a fraction of the cost of traditional body shop repair methods.”

Whilst winter weather may bring a wide variety of challenging road conditions, from ice and snow, research shows that it is exactly drivers’ decreased attention to road safety during summer that contributes to the increased number of incidents.

For further information, please visit Chipsaway at www.chipsaway.co.uk or call Chipsaway Milton Keynes on 01908 678000 to obtain your free estimate TODAY!

It’s estimated that around seven million people make car journeys for UK holidays during bank holidays and the summer months. This high number of motorists, combined with cars crammed full of people and luggage, means road traffic accidents are more likely. Summer is also the time for surface dressing as highways authorities improve local roads by laying tar covered with loose chippings. But while the work is necessary, it is the curse of motorists, causing damage to paintwork and headlamp glasses. Christine Dhunna said: “If you are unfortunate enough to have your car paintwork damaged by loose chippings or have a bump or scrape whilst travelling this summer – it does not necessarily mean you have the hassle and expense of claiming on your insurance to get it repaired.

Heel Pain…. your first step to being pain free! What causes heel pain? The heel is the largest of the 26 bones in the human foot. It is designed to provide a firm support for the weight of your body. The heel absorbs the impact when your feet hit the ground when walking and running, and it springs you forward ready for the next step. While walking, the stresses placed on your feet can be one-and-a-quarter times your body weight (this increases to two-and-three-quarters times when running). So it is not surprising that heel pain is common. Although heel pain can be mild and will sometimes disappear on its own, in some cases the pain persists and can become a chronic problem. Heel pain has a variety of different causes, although the most common is a condition called plantar fasciitis. For more information about this condition feel free to call 01908299272

What are the symptoms? Pain usually starts gradually without any injury to the area. Often it is triggered by wearing a flat shoe (e.g. flip flops on summer holidays). This stretches the plantar fascia (thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes) too far and begins the inflammation of the area. Typically, pain is felt under the foot towards the front of the heel. It is common for it to start in one heel only and normally it is most painful when standing up first thing in the morning. It can often ease with activity but then become more pronounced at the end of the day, or after a long time spent on your feet. Heel pain/plantar fasciitis, June 2011 Patient information – Heel pain/plantar fasciitis

What is plantar fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is caused when the plantar fascia is strained beyond its normal extension. This causes the soft tissue fibres to stretch and become inflamed, often where it is attached to the heel bone (although it sometimes happens in the middle of the foot). This results in pain, often accompanied by a cramping of the calf muscles as tightness of the Achilles tendon is a major contributory factor. The underlying position of your foot is often to blame for this condition and therefore advice on shoes and insoles is important. A foot that flattens excessively on standing is called a ‘pronating’ foot and this needs to be corrected by using orthotic devices (these are special insoles or inserts to improve the way the foot functions). Plantar fasciitis is more common in people who spend all day on their feet in flat, unsupportive shoes or who are overweight. What is the treatment for heel pain? The best way to resolve heel pain is by doing several things at once: 1. Check your footwear: avoid flat, unsupportive shoes. 2. Stretch out the Achilles tendon and calf muscles. 3. Use insoles and orthotics to correct any foot faults and cushion and cradle the arch while it heals. 4. Use anti-inflammatory medication. If you are already taking medicines from your doctor please consult a pharmacist prior to taking any over the counter medicines. 5. Contact PC Physiotherapy for a free biomechanical assessment on 01908299272 Preventing heel pain Try minimising the things that cause heel pain to start: • Lose weight. • Where possible, reduce the time spent on your feet. • Wear shoes which have some padding or shock-absorbing material in the heel.

You can buy heel pads in most good chemists and these will reduce the impact of walking. • Wear shoes that fit well and aren’t worn down on the heel or soles. • If you’re taking part in sports, wear appropriate shoes and warm up (and down) properly before exercising. • If the heel pain is associated with a particular shoe, avoid wearing that pair for a while. • Avoid walking barefoot on hard ground. If you suffer from any heel pain please call 01908 299 272 to book an assessment.
