Cloudy2Clear Windows - Service with a smile!

I

t’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Billy Harley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the

customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole. ’ Cloudy2Clear service the Milton Keynes, Bedford and Leighton Buzzard areas and Billy is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated .’

So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Billy a cal l for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MP’s Diary

L

ast year Milton Keynes was named as the best place to do business in the UK outside of London, a huge achievement for all those belonging to our business community and also to Milton Keynes as a destination. With the highest number of small business start ups in the UK we are attracting businesses to our city, encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation and with a fantastic new Chamber of Commerce we are earning our reputation for being a business capital in the UK. Whilst we have many small businesses we are also home to many big businesses; Network Rail, Volkswagen, Mercedez Benz instantly spring to mind but what may surprise some people is that Milton Keynes is also home to a Coca Cola Factory. The Coca Cola Factory is based in Northfield, just down from Willen, having opened in 1976 it has seen rapid growth and now employs 230

people and makes a staggering 37million cans of pop a year. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the factory, having visited once before 5 years ago to open a new canning line, and was incredibly impressed by the size, scale and speed of the operation. As 35,000 cans a minute were filled with Diet Dr Pepper and whizzed around the conveyer belt to be packaged up I was in awe of this incredible feat of engineering. Social Responsibility has become an important feature within business and Coca Cola were proud to talk about their recycling and social payback scheme. However, their new education centre which is about to be opened at the Northfield site really caught my eye. To be opened in the new year the education centre is the sixth of its kind that Coca Cola are opening, trying to teach children and young adults aged 12-21 about the manufacturing business. In a non branded environment a fully qualified teacher, who is an employee of Coke’s, will show the children the factory and teach them about how a British based manufacturing firm works. Their other education centres (based as far away as Kilbride) had 60,000 students go through their doors last year and I am extremely pleased that students based locally here in Milton Keynes will also be given the opportunity to benefit first hand from this fantastic opportunity.

Business is the backbone of our com munity and we are privileged to live in a city that plays host to som e truly remarkable organisations. As ever, if I can help you in anyway please feel free to contact me on 01908 686830

Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Saloon Auto Reviewed 16/10/13

T

his is, hands down, THE most AMAZING car I have EVER DRIVEN!!!

The engine on this car is a whopping great 6.3-litre petrol V8, which develops 457bhp!! People covering a lot of miles may want to look away now, as in the real world this car is only doing 15 MPG. Having said that, it will be the best fun you have ever had doing 15 miles.

It oozes luxury as standard with its Command Online Multi-Media System, Designo Two Tone Leather, Heated Front Seats, Memory Pack, Sun Roof, Bluetooth, Auto Lights and Wipers, and much, much more. It’s crazy really that this is a super sports car, yet it is so practical; 5 doors, 5 proper seats, lots of leg room, a cavernous boot, and drives fine around town - you really wouldn’t know the size of the engine unless you put your foot down. It also comes

in a Coupe or an estate option. The appearance of the car is great too; it looks like an American muscle car with German finesse, with its wide tyres and rippled bonnet, and the noise it makes is something else, although in some ways it still comes across understated - you could easily use this as your every day car. Under the bonnet, each car has a silver plate engraved with the name of the person that built the car. All the engines are hand built and Mercedes have a ‘one man, one engine’ policy, so the shell is built in the normal factory after which it goes to AMG where they add the engine, brakes, and suspension. Having driven an Audi S4 and BMW M3 recently, there is just no comparison - in my view the Mercedes wins hands down. MPH = 23.8 Combine d Top speed = 155 (Li mited) 0-60 = 4.3 CO2 = 280g/km On the road price £5 5,000 (Lease price £499+v at over 2 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

Memories are made of this…

S

toring your treasures in the loft, under your bed or on a shelf collecting dust is probably a lot less than your favourite pieces deserve.

The majority of us gather a variety of souvenirs and memorabilia over the years, most of which ends up pushed into a box and forgotten.

certificate, your daughter’s ballet shoes or your son’s first football shirt, these items are as priceless, as the memories that go with them. Framing your favourite objects doesn’t just look good, if you use the correct materials it can help preserve them as well. Valuable or sentimentally important pieces should always be framed using conservation materials. Conservation framing preserves and protects artwork, photographs or objects by using materials which will not harm the piece and will as much as possible protect it from physical damage. Handmade picture or memorabilia frames are a great cost effective way to transform your space, and at Ciqo Artworks our experience tells us it’s always best to provide our initial consultation at our clients address. We accurately assess the best way to provide what you really like, whilst saving you the trouble of having to take your valued items into a shop for framing.

If you would like to consider having ite ms framed, for your ho me or business, then please call us, our ini tial consultation is Free… Ciqo Artwor ks on 01908 613341 .

Photographs are the most obvious memento that can be framed, however by simply adding articles like programs and tickets you can give a whole new dimension to your pictures and the memories they represent. Also and thanks to some clever box designs you don’t have to limit yourself to the traditional framed items either – pretty much anything can be framed in some way especially your very own sporting treasures… that first swimming

The Best Man’s Speech

Y

Your best friend has just done you the massive honour of asking you to be his Best Man. You are flattered, privileged and scared. Sorting out the Stag do will be easy, but that speech!

Never done anything like that before; never spoken to more than 5 people at any one time before. What to say and how to say it. What if I dry up? Feeling nervous already and the wedding is months away.

Well it’s your lucky day, you can stop panicking, help is at hand.

It’s not just the best man who is on the hook, the bride’s Dad and the groom all have their part to play. The speeches are such a pivotal part of the wedding; they set the atmosphere and mood for the rest of the day. They can repair or destroy family relationships; delight or appall the guests; create laughter or boredom. The choice is yours. With so much at stake it makes sense to get help. “That Speech” can coach an individual, or if you would prefer, other members of the wedding party can enjoy a joint deal. It must also be remembered that this is a skill which you will be able to use for the rest of your life, both at work and socially.

If you would like to talk to us about your situation please ring 07 971 291944 or e-mail andrew@freeston e.co.uk

“That Speech” is here for you, to guide you though the process of creating and delivering a fabulous speech that will be remembered for years for all the right reasons, as opposed to the mumbled rubbish spoken by the gibbering wreak that used to be you! The difference between the two is not that great, but most people need to be coached in the techniques, tips and skills to fill that gap and present a great speech. This is where “That Speech” comes in, to mentor you through the whole process. Writing the words is the easy bit, although there is no substitute for good research. The skills involved with the presentation and delivery of those words is where the skill is.

s the days become shorter and darker it’s tempting to stay indoors. Often our gardens look a bit depressing at this time of year but they really don’t have to. True most of the leaves have fallen, branches are bare and the majority of flowering species are dormant but with a little planning you can still produce a plot which is a pleasure to look at. It’s this time of year that the evergreens hold centre stage. These bastions of winter are overshadowed by their showier counterparts all year. Now they provide colour and structure. Because it’s winter evergreens are most important next to the house. That way, even when we’re trapped indoors, we can still look out at something beautiful. Don’t just think conifers, there are a host of other evergreens to provide variety. Garrya elliptica is festooned with catkins at this time year and the glossy leaves of a camellia look very pretty against a house, though you need to remember to enrich the soil with humus. I love ivy too. The range of leaf shapes and sizes is enormous and colours vary from yellow-greens through dark, to variegated and even tinged with pink. You can’t beat conifers for structure though and the colours are amazing. I particularly like golden Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and

are extremely ve Thujas, which start Cre rsatile. off green then turn gre ate a patchwork effect with en s, ye llo ws and orange-reds. to rust as soon as the first frost hits. And don’t forget holly. For small gardens try Blue Angel, which is selffertile and looks fabulous grown as a standard. When it’s smothered in glossy berries it’s real WOW plant. Just what’s needed in November!

Evergreen Planting Tips The perfect time to plant your evergreens is now! Dig a hole several times larger than either the container the shrub was purchased in, or the dimensions of the roots for a bare-rooted specimen. Dig over the base of the hole and incorporate plenty of humus. If the soil is dense and claggy dig in some grit. Turn out the plant and check that it will be at the same level after planting as it was in the pot. Tease out a few of the stronger roots to encourage them to branch out into their new surroundings. Enrich the soil you’ve removed from the hole with a little compost and some slow release fertiliser. Return the soil around the shrub and firm sown until the correct level is reached. Water thoroughly, stake if required and remember to use special ties which will not restrict growth.

Tips for autumn lawn care

T

he end of the growing season is generally the time when people put away their lawn mower and prepare the garden for winter. However, after the hot dry summer months there some important tasks to be completed.

GreenThumb provide a complete Lawn Treatment Programme throughout the year consisting of weed elimination, moss control and fertiliser applications together with scarification, aeration, disease and pest control treatments to ensure your lawn is amongst the best in your neighbourhood at a cost that is less than doing it yourself. We believe that the more people are aware of a few basic facts the better their lawn will be says Clare from the Milton Keynes branch. With this is mind here are a few seasonal tips which will improve the health of your lawn and get it ready for next year. • Most lawns in the local area are based on a clay sub-surface which tends to be very compacted. Compaction means that rain and nutrients cannot penetrate to the grass roots, resulting in a weakened root system. Over the winter rain water lingers on the surface causing moss to form, whilst in the summer, when the ground is baked solid, rainfall will not absorb effectively. The best treatment for compacted soil is to use a hollow-tine aerator, which takes out plugs of soil, leaving small holes in the lawn that allow the root zone to breathe,

24 mkflyers

improves the uptake of nutrients and reduces lawn compaction. Surface water will also drain away more easily. • Over the summer, whilst the grass is growing vigorously, an accumulation of stems, roots and leaves intermingled with decaying organic matter creates a mat on the surface of the soil. This mat is called thatch and prevents moisture, oxygen and nutrients reaching the roots, where they are needed. It is also an excellent medium for moss to thrive. Scarification is an operation designed to reduce the amount of thatch by a machine with blades and knives which then allows new grass to thrive in the Spring. • Keep mowing your lawn regularly until the grass stops growing. Increase the height of your mower blade, and as always ensure that the blade is sharp. Do not cut your grass any lower than an inch at this time of year. • Clear up fallen leaves regularly. Fallen leaves prevent sunlight reaching the grass which stops the plant producing chlorophyll, leaving the grass a pale yellow instead of green. Leaves also collect water which encourages the dreaded moss to grow underneath. If you would like to know how GreenThumb can help to imp rove your lawn or would just like some advice you can contact Clare and the GreenThumb team by telephone on 01908 850544

Pet Tips for the Winter Weather

A

lways walk dogs on the lead near water during periods of low temperatures. Ice does not always freeze evenly leaving weak spots, in what may appear a solid surface, plus snow will mask the water’s edge. Float a large ball in your pond so if the water freezes you can remove it and ensure your fish get enough oxygen. Dog coats are readily available in a wide variety of sizes, colours, styles and prices. This can make a dog that becomes resistant to being walked in the cold, enthusiastic once again. Owners of mice, guinea pigs, rats etc... as well as both indoor and outdoors birds (inc chickens, should consider covering cages/

28 mkflyers

coops with a warm blanket over night to retain heat. Reflective/LED collars and accessories are also readily available and can provide peace of mind when walking dogs off the lead in poorly lit areas or for locating the family cat that does not want to come in at night Increase ambient temperature in reptile tanks, or move away from windows and doors Outside guinea pigs should be moved indoors and you may want to consider moving outside rabbits into sheds/garages. Always increase the amount of hay in your rabbits bedding area during winter. Grit can cause contact allergies and illness if consumed, so bathe paws or protect them using paw covers/boots if this is a problem in your area.

Keep antifreeze we ll out of your pets reach as it tastes delicio us to them, but is deadly.

Positive living How would you like to be happy? (I am I) You are a being of light. Light is pure energy. You are energy that has slowed to form physical matter. You are light at its slowest, densest physical vibration. (I am I) As we look into a microscope everything we think of as solid and permanent is in reality fluid, energy and space. Nothing solid is solid at all. Everything that we suppose looks one way, microscopically looks very different, and this also includes each one of us. We all connect to life and life connects with us. In-fact the two can never be separate. When you see Earth from space you see one solid mass of a planet. We ourselves become as small as atoms and molecules are to us. Together, combined, we formulate part of the living life force that is the life force of this vibrant planet. Again, the two can never separate or be apart. Zooming in to be able to see humanity from a focal point in space would be the same thing as us looking into a microscope. From space the Earth looks solid but we ourselves know that it’s really not. We know all the things we see, we know there’s space and substance everywhere, and the same is true again as we delve deeper into the macroscopic world that we too form part of. The deeper we look, the more fluid and energy based all substances become. Yet what is energy at its finest? It is either a positive or a negative charge – nothing else. The two extremes either link together – i.e. positive + positive – or negative + negative – to form a greater whole. Or they collide as opposites and cancel out. Happiness is a positive charge that renders negative null and void. Positives cancel negatives out. When you are happily at peace and in balance your system ingests and uses positive energy available to you from the planets own life force resources. When you are stressed, worried, angry, depressed or a mirage of other negatives, you naturally close your internal shutters from inside, shutting off the very thing your system now needs to make you feel better. You block the actual flow of positive energy from flowing within, and because it cannot enter to uplift and charge you up – you begin to feel worse, until a time that on some level you then break this cycle. Happiness is good for you for many reasons over and above the ones you’d normally think about. Even though for many people happiness can seem an elusive thing, research has shown us that the genes of those with a deep sense of purpose in life are better equipped to fight disease, infection and major ailments – because it directly boosts the immune system that then can help us. It changes things within us – right down

32 mkflyers

to DNA, which then aids and boosts our ability to cope with life and all that emanates from it. Happiness itself doesn’t come in any particular form or shape or size. You can’t smell it, you can’t taste it – you just are it or you are not… We subconsciously crave it, but because it’s difficult to discern, we naturally start to search for it outwardly our whole life through. We look at other people who possess it and we try to be the same, or we hope it will pass from them to us if we share their company for long enough, and that includes looking at magazine and TV images and idols, products in shops and shop windows, some even turn to surgeons and the knife because they think the final product will make them happier… Yet all these things and more at their very best equate to short spells of elevation – nothing more… By focusing on our emotions and feelings as the indicators to our happiness levels, we look outwardly again to find and fix what we think needs fixing, or to gain what we ‘feel’ is lacking. We blame others for what they do to add to the way that we’re feeling and the list goes on. Happiness is a state of mind. It’s a state of inner being. It’s not a feeling - for feelings change. It’s not an emotion for they change too. Happiness is a thing that we are born with. When we look outwardly for it – we change its truth and meaning. We move further away from it – we push it away. We send our power out to others and make them responsible for happiness’s deliverance and existence. But if everyone does the same and everyone wants it – but nobody has it – who has got it? Where is this happiness that we all crave? Happiness is positive energy. It is a natural contribution from Earth planet – directly to and through us. In-fact the planet needs the energy bursts that we produce. We are working bio chemical vessels for live energy (and hence light) to pass to and through. It’s invisible, yet we send it everywhere in pulses daily, through every interaction, thought, word, deed and conscious intent we ever make. To be happy is easy. You just have to give up stress, worry and the mirage of negatives you daily buy into. You are important. How you live and feel are important too. Whether you’re sad or happy is down to you…

Review for M Champagne & Cocktail Lounge by Kelly Thompson

M

o & wife Michelle who run M Champagne & Cocktail Lounge gave me the pleasure of taking part in a Cocktail Master Class & what a class it was!

On entry to this very sophisticated up market trending location based in The Hub Milton Keynes I was greeted by a warm clean & vibrant feel from the place, everything from lighting to the general greeting from Mark the barman who made me very welcome & offered me a glass of bubbly while I waited for my class to begin. Alan the bar manager then taught me all about making Mojotos & Cosmopolitans, the class teaches you all about the history of the drinks & how they became so famous from the ingredient’s used. Alan showed me how to make the cocktails I then had to make them myself & of course after making these very good looking presentable drinks you get to drink them all.

I had such a laugh with the team they were all fantastic in their own quirky ways & would definitely recommend anyone wishing to take part in this fantastic master class to give it a go. The Hub, 25 Mortimer Square, Central Milton Keynes MK9 2FB

Secklow Sounds - your local online community radio station

A

s Milton Keynes prime online community radio station, Secklow Sounds is a non-profit station run entirely on a voluntary basis. Although there are future plans to transmit on FM, currently you can only listen to programmes on the internet at www.secklowsounds.org where it broadcasts a wide range of exciting live and recorded programmes around the clock. You can also listen to programmes on demand via www.spreaker.com or www.mixcloud.com or through the station’s website. There’s really something for everyone, with programmes presented by an enthusiastic and committed team of 50+volunteers from all backgrounds and age groups, each bringing their own specialities on a wide range of music and other topics. The station is proud of the diversity of its programmes that are produced to reflect the tastes of every type of listener. These include broadcasts on just about every kind of music genre, history, the arts, comedy, business, current affairs, religion, local interests and nostalgia. Programmes change regularly to meet the demands of the station’s audience. Recently a range of topical shows have been added as new presenters have joined the station, while a number of the ‘old hands’ have returned after short seasonal breaks. Among the latest programmes are ‘Plane Talking’ with Mick Bannister, ‘Flashback to the ‘80s’ with Christine Holley, ‘Sports MK’ with Mark Johnston, ‘The Life Doctor’ with James McCafferty and Theresa Kelleher’s ‘Inspired by Jazz’. Several popular shows have returned or been allocated new slots, including ‘The Boat That Sank’, ‘The Best Time of the Day’ with Tom Scudamore and ‘Mined Your Head’ presented by Steve McNay and Chris Parlor. New, information and updates of these shows and other regular programmes can be found at the Secklow Sounds website. Secklow Sounds works in partnership with

local organisations including Inter-Action MK who provide facilities for the studio at its headquarters. In return the station offers radio production and presentation training to its user groups. Shows are also presented by students aged from 14 to 16 and the station actively provides work experience for students studying media. Secklow Sounds was the brainchild of station director and founder, Mike Johnson - winner of the 2000 Andrew Cross award for the best programme by a Restricted Services Station. The ethos is to create a friendly, family environment to bring people and communities together. In addition to the regular programme content, presenters interview local interest groups, entertainers, business people, charity organisers and others on-air and attend local events. This station’s role is succinctly summed up by Mike Johnson: “The intention is to bring together people from all backgrounds to produce an unrivalled variety of programmes celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, music, food and traditions that is Milton Keynes, and will include business, health, sports, the arts, faith and non-faith groups. As a community station we will encourage participation from all citizens, defending their interest and reflecting their views. Cultural diversity is at the heart of Secklow Sounds and all ideas can be debated in our programmes, and a multiplicity of views will be fairly presented.”

If you have some free time, especia lly during the dayt and would like to ime contribute as part of Secklow Sounds family of presente ’ rs, please contact Mike Johnson on 816316 or by email 07757 to at mike@secklo wsounds.org

What on earth is Korfball?

M

ilton Keynes has a thriving korfball community, but most people won’t have a clue what it is!

Korfball is a bit like netball and bit like basketball - but better!* It’s played in mixed sex teams of 4 men and 4 women on a court similar sized to basketball. Korfball is played indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. The aim of the game is to work with your team-mates to get the ball through the hoop (Korf) Men can only mark men and women can only mark women and unlike netball, you can’t shoot if your defender is within touching distance of you – so you need to move quick! So now you know what korfball is, why not come down and give it a go? MK Lakers Korfball club are always looking for new and enthusiastic members, we train twice a week on a Monday and Wednesday and play league matches on a Sunday. It’s a superb way to get fit and meet lots of new people. As a newbie, you get your first two sessions for FREE and the next two pay as you go - after that, you can decide to join us for only £20 per month. Less than most gym fees and much more fun and sociable! *in our opinion!

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people

M

Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business. “As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic. It is much larger than the “Net Bags” and yet smaller than the 90x90x90 “Bulk bag” but, has the strength of a 1 ton Bulk bag, this making it very strong and durable so it can be reused many times. With this being smaller than a Bulk bag, the bulk bags need a folk lift to move once filled. The Barrow Bag can be moved by 1 man by hand. Hardwood consists of: Ash, Elm, Oak, Plane, Thorn, Acacia, Cherry, Maple, Sycamore, Beech Softwood consits of: Chestnut, Pine, Lime, Alder, Fir, Larch All of the logs that we sell are from sustainable sources harvested from our Tree Surgery operations throughtout Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton, Leighton Buzzard, Aylesbury, Oxford, Banbury, Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, London and surrounding areas.
