nother new release from Mercedes that’s going down a storm!!
This is as different as chalk and cheese compared to the old A-class they have really improved it, it has great looks and a fantastic interior. With downsizing all the rage among buyers of premium hatchbacks, the old Mercedes A-Class couldn’t cut the mustard anymore. As more of a mini-MPV than posh hatch, the German brand was missing a vital rival to the Audi A3 and VW Golf– a market it simply couldn’t afford to ignore. However, in 2013 the new A-Class arrived and was sleeker, sexier and better to drive than the car it replaced, with a more upmarket interior and a whole load of new safety technology. There are several trim and engine combinations available, from the entry-level A180 petrol SE, right up to the blisteringly fast A45 AMG. The pick of the range is the A180 CDI diesel, though, mixing performance and economy in equal measure – and impressive 99g/km CO2 emissions. The Mercedes A-Class isn’t a sporty or as rewarding to drive as the brilliant BMW 1 Series, but it does boast decent levels of grip and the top-spec engines are genuinely fast. The SE models are the most comfortable, while the Sport, AMG Sport and top-of-the-range Engineered by AMG models get bigger wheels and stiffer suspension. Capable rather than fun, the current A-Class offers plenty of badge appeal in a stylish and efficient package.

With SE, Sport and AMG Sport trim levels, plus the top-of-therange A250 model being badged Engineered by AMG, it’s clear that Mercedes is aiming at the BMW 1 Series with the current A-Class. However, there’s no hiding the fact that the A-Class drives like a Merc, meaning it’s decently sporting, but without the dynamic edge that makes BMWs so special. While grip levels are high, the ride is far too firm for rutted British roads, especially if you opt for high-spec cars with sports suspension and bigger alloy wheels. The steering isn’t as sharp as its BMW rival, while the diesel engines sound very gruff and quite agricultural around town. The basic engines are capable rather than fast, but Mercedes does offer an eye-wateringly quick A45 AMG model – capable of 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds thanks to 355bhp and four-wheel drive. Overall I think this is a good car and they will sell loads of them, there is some very good rates on them and Mercedes are keen to get loads on the road. ave you ever heard of Edward Augustus Bowles?
Neither had I until recently. He was a knowledgeable and slightly eccentric plantsman who lived in Middlesex in the early part of the Twentieth Century. He deserves to be better known for a number of reasons but if I could pick only one it’s this: Bowles devoted one corner of his garden to what he called his ‘lunatic asylum’. Here he grew ‘odd’ plants...weird specimens which took his fancy. He referred to them as his ‘maniacs’! I found this idea appealing because, like Bowles, I enjoy collecting quirky specimens. I don’t have an ‘asylum’, I prefer to integrate the whimsical with the conventional, partly due to space restrictions and partly because I like it when visitors suddenly pause, do a double take or raise an eyebrow and smile. Children in particular take delight in the weird or unusual. The first candidate for Bowles’ asylum was the corkscrew hazel. This is a variant of the common hazel and has fabulous spiral stems which are smothered in cheerful yellow catkins in the late winter and early spring. I added a corkscrew hazel to my own plot a few years ago and admit

that its twisted branches and sculptural appearance give me a lot of pleasure on cold grey winter days. To my six-year-old though, it’s a ‘magic tree’ where fairies live! Another plant which Bowles coveted was the Plymouth Strawberry, (Fragaria vesca muricata). I hadn’t heard of it before but plan to grow it this year. It looks like a strawberry with a freaky green spiked hairdo. You can eat the fruit as the spikes are soft and harmless but it’s more usually grown for its ornamental properties. If you want something small but different try Ophiopogon planiscapus “Nigrescens”. This intensely black grass looks like a small black fountain. It’s a very attractive, unusual addition to a garden especially if set in a bed of white gravel or pebbles. A favourite with children is Tolmiea menziessi, more commonly known as the ‘piggyback plant’ due to its strange habit of carrying its young on its leaves. I started one of these fascinating plants a couple of years ago. Each little plantlet which sprouts can be potted up and established on its own. My son loves to do this and gives them as gifts to his friends and teachers. The absolute guaranteed hit of my own garden ‘freak show’ though is my small colony of pitcher plants (sarracenias) which look terribly exotic but are actually quite easy to grow. They appeal to small boys (and lots of older ones!) because of their gruesome insect-eating habit.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people

Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way. “Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business. “As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Korfball is a bit like netball and bit like basketball - but better!* It’s played in mixed sex teams of 4 men and 4 women on a court similar sized to basketball. Korfball is played indoors during the winter and outdoors during the summer. The aim of the game is to work with your team-mates to get the ball through the hoop (Korf) Men can only mark men and women can only mark women and unlike netball, you can’t shoot if your defender is within touching distance of you – so you need to move quick! So now you know what korfball is, why not come down and give it a go? MK Lakers Korfball club are always looking for new and enthusiastic members, we train twice a week on a Monday and Wednesday and play league matches on a Sunday.
