ADVERTISING FEATURE

AUGUST is all about FREE SOLAR PANELS Cut your electricity bills by up to half, simply by having free solar panels installed on your roof* When we say FREE we mean FREE, there is nothing at all to pay for this service, no survey fee, no document or admin fee, no installation fee, it’s totally FREE. How It Works - The photo electric cells on the panels convert the sun’s rays into electrical current which is safely drawn away from your roof and fed back into your house at the meter box. It produces great savings as you are automatically offered the free electricity first prior to expensive electricity drawn through your meter from the grid

6 mkflyers

and your supply company. It means that your regular electricity consumption if it remains unchanged is heavily subsidized by the free electricity produced on your roof and therefore your bought consumption (from your electricity provider) is significantly reduced by 35% to 40% on average. Other small lifestyle and consumption behaviour changes can easily help you to get this up to a 50% reduction. So you could cut your electricity bills in half literally, but the best thing is that these savings are ongoing, not just this year maybe

£400/£500 but every year for the next 25 years! Champion Promotions are looking for just 250 households in Milton Keynes during this promotional period. Help us achieve our target and 25% of our profit is donated to local charities including MK Mind. We are a local company with our roots deeply embedded in charity that are focussed on finding the best deals for you, and telling you about them. *subject to roof size/type/ orientation/pitch/shading

MP’s Diary

By Mark Lancaster, MP for Milton Keynes North

I have learnt during my time as an MP that if you really want to make a difference and get something changed in parliament you have to carry on raising it. The phrase “if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again” seems particularly apt. One issue where I have been doing just that is Khat, a plant which is chewed and widely used by the Somalian community.

My campaign started when I was contacted 4 years ago by members of the Somalian Community based in Milton Keynes concerned by the affect the drug was having of the social cohesion and family breakdown with the community and associated health concerns. Following various meetings with people from the community, I subsequently pressed for reform on numerous occasions in Parliament, asked written and oral questions and held a debate in the House of Commons in January 2012. I also had a meeting with the Home Secretary last year to highlight the problems being faced by the widespread use of the plant. It was therefore with delight that I welcomed her announcement that Khat was to be banned and categorised as a Class C drug. I am particularly pleased for the community that I have been working so closely with trying to highlight that the UK is out of step with the rest of Northern Europe in not banning Khat and the growing evidence that the UK is being used as a regional hub for the illegal onward trafficking of Khat. Persistence really does pay off. Last month saw Armed Forces Week being celebrated and it was with pride that the Mayor and I received a plaque from City resident Gunner Frank Apeadu to mark his return from Afghanistan. Frank, who comes from Milton Keynes and is a Gunner with 32 Royal Artillery Regiment based in Salisbury, has been on two tours in Afghanistan and

8 mkflyers

one of Iraq. He presented Milton Keynes with a plaque with a map of Afghanistan and the flags of those who had helped nation building on it. It was a great honour to meet with Frank who has served his country on numerous occasions. It is so important to commemorate and celebrate the work our Servicemen and women contribute abroad and receiving Frank’s plaque, which he has kindly given to the city, will act as a good reminder to all past the celebration of Armed Forces Week, of what has been achieved by our forces in Afghanistan and beyond. We are very lucky in Milton Keynes to be well looked after by numerous charitable organisations. I went to visit Healthwatch (formerly LinkMK) who launched in April. They are an independent patient’s watchdog who confidentially log complaints about the Health and Social Care services in Milton Keynes and report any trends in the problems service users face. If you have any problems or need to be sign posted to the correct service I would strongly recommend you get in touch with Alan, Carol and the team over in Kiln Farm who have already made a real difference since they launched in April, you can contact them on 01908 266 696. As ever, if there is anything I can help you with or if you would like me to visit your organisation you can get hold of me on 01908 686830.

The New Mercedes Benz CLA-220 CDI AMG Sport Auto Reviewed 05/07/13 Firstly, I have to say this car looks amazing! It’s a real head turner, with the great looks of a coupe but the practicality of a saloon, and a really good boot size too!!

Inside the cabin this car looks very appealing. The seats are very comfortable and there’s more than enough room in the back for 2 adults, yet still feels like a sports car. The one we tested had the Becker Sat Nav System, which is good value at around £500 as an additional option. The only thing I was unsure about was the screen on the dash, which is used for the Radio, Sat Nav and general Car Function. To me it looks like Mercedes have just glued an ipad to the dash. They have also done this with the New A and B classes, which is a shame as they are all great cars overall. Driving the car was a pleasure. We tested the 220 diesel engine, which for me is a little underpowered but delivered a very smooth ride. The Auto Gearbox was a dream, and also comes with a Sports Mode Function. The sweeping roofline and sculpted surfaces enable remarkable aerodynamic performance. The drag coefficient of just 0.23 is the lowest on any production car for any budding F1 drivers. This engine is tried and tested in Mercedes top selling C-Class range, so it’s very reliable, extremely fuel efficient, and the servicing costs won’t break the bank either. The CLA is currently available in C180 petrol and a C220 diesel engine - which we tested. The model lines available are a Standard Sport and an AMG

10 mkflyers

Sport. If your budget can stretch to it, go for the AMG Sport as it is much prettier inside and out, although saying that both models have a great level of standard spec - Bluetooth, Auto Lights and Wipers, Parking Sensors, Cruise Control, with safety features that come second to none. Numerous Airbags to keep you safe, located by the knees, windows, doors and dash. Collision Prevention Assist is another great safety feature, which will warn you if you’re driving too close to another car. Attention Assist is great too, so if you get sleepy on a long journey it will know and alert you as sensors monitor your driving. It’s even got an Active Bonnet that knows when you have hit something, or someone, and the bonnet will rise to lessen the impact. Overall I would give this car an 8/10. The main downside for me is the underpowered engine. The main upside is its amazing looks!! MPG = 62.8 Combined Top speed =143 0-60 =8.2 CO2=117 On the road price £29,355.00 (Lease price £299+vat over 3 years with 6 payments up front based on 10k miles a year)

POSITIVE LIVING Be who you were born to be…

Who are you today? Why is your life as it is? What makes you choose all you do - from the millions of variable options available always? What makes you actually ‘you’? You are much more than you see in a mirror. You operate on many levels, some clearly seen, but more are completely invisible to the normal conscious workings of daily behaviour and life. If you only see half of life’s picture - you can only live half a life story, so let’s view this from a few more perspectives, let’s rewind… From a personal perspective you strive to be recognised, to be loved, understood and of value. You work and play hard; you give life your very best, often more than is actively called for, whenever and wherever you can. Yet despite all you give, despite what you change, clear away, want, need, try or do, you still actively struggle with love and life. From a very early age you were taught that love was conditional, that it depended on good behaviour, right doing, right belief and right action, but what if you now were to learn that all this was not necessarily true? What if you had been loved all along? If you were free to make mistakes, for after all we’re only human, and that your best at all times was good enough? What if you realised that no aspect of character could ever be hidden, and that everything you ever thought, said or did impacted life someway, somehow? What if life could only deliver what first had been freely put in – a bit like stocking up stores in a cupboard, and that with more understanding, self-recognition and very little effort, you could easily change things around to be better? From a personal perspective life can often be difficult, especially if you find that you seem to fight daily just to keep things afloat, but there itself is one of life’s hidden keys... The very fact that you have to fight! You know very well the battles you have fought, won or lost, just to live, simply to get to where you are now. You know the journeys of your parents, their fights, their highs and lows inside out. Even before birth you were programmed that life would be difficult, and your conditioning since then has compounded that belief, for whatever we ‘believe’ – we attract…. What if every thought, word or intent that you personally produced through free will, no matter how small or large, inconsequential or seemingly innocent, actually programmed real life coming in? This would mean that you directly create and affect your own reality and that behind everything you do – there is a why and a reason,

that behind every action a payback, something you want or don’t want in return. People everywhere are doing the same subconscious things they always have. Each is looking for where they fit best, for where they feel happy, alive, connected and contented; each is trying to live a life that flows freely, that feels easy and relatively good. (I am I) You have to understand how YOU are the only driving force in your life. You are at no one’s mercy. No ONE can control any aspect of who you are and what you do. No one means to harm you – no matter how tough things can get. Most are just living a story they too are creating themselves. But right now you are lucky! You are beginning to realise… No one needs to come to your rescue – for you are not lost. You are your own hero and you call the shots. I am the ONE who will help you as soon as you realise that you can ask! No one else can fulfil your soul journey, your destiny or your emerging potential. You are important beyond anything you can think of. You alone choose your route to be happy. (I am I) Do you remember what life goals you had in your youth? What inspired or held your attention? What you thought you once wanted to become? What did you believe life was like or would offer? And why do you feel different now? You have trained for the whole of your life to get to this point – so don’t give up and stop growing now. You are exactly the person you should be right now – to grow beyond karma - to turn your life into success. (I am I) You are a powerful creator – the time is now ripe for your talents and gifts to spring forth. Everyone needs what you came here to share – to contribute as your gift to this time frame of now. (I am I) Are you ready to discover who you really are?

eMoov.co.uk announces launch of Buckinghamshire franchise Estate agents turn their back on traditional estate agency to launch local Buckinghamshire service LONDON, 2 JULY 2013 – Low cost online estate agency, eMoov.co.uk, has announced the launch of its first franchise, with the opening of an office in Milton Keynes through: eMoov.co.uk/bucks. The office is the first franchise from the UK’s largest online estate agent, which will see the company offering a personalised, local service to residents of Buckinghamshire. Led by Paul Taylor, James Boult and Benjamin Reeves, who previously worked at a locally prominent high street estate agent, eMoov.co.uk/ Bucks will offer the same quality service provided by the business nationally, but offering additional local expertise. The new eMoov franchise owners felt that the traditional estate agency model was not offering the service it should be to Buckinghamshire homeowners, and wanted to be able to provide a level of knowledge and support for the county, without forcing potential sellers to adhere to the usual commission based fee structure. Indeed, eMoov.co.uk has calculated that Buckinghamshire residents spend approximately £36 million1 every year on estate agency commission fees, with Milton Keynes

homeowners paying out an average of £3,593 to agents when they sell their home. Benjamin Reeves, eMoov Buckinghamshire partner, commented: “I had been increasingly disillusioned by the service which my former estate agency was offering. It seemed to me that there must be a more cost-effective way to provide local Bucks residents with estate agency services. “eMoov has already established a great national presence, and with the franchise we saw the opportunity to use our local knowledge and expertise to bring low cost online estate agency to the area.” The eMoov Bucks team will be offering the same services provided by the parent company, charging a fixed fee of £395 plus vat to sell a property, and marketing it through the major online property portals like Rightmove and Zoopla, rather than charging the usual commission structure on the value of the property. 1 Based on figures from the Land Registry available through: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/in_depth/ uk_house_prices/html/mg.stm

For people throughout the UK, dealing with incontinence is a common situation Incontinence can have both emotional and practical impact for the person concerned and so can have a large effect on the quality of life enjoyed, but a few simple steps can make a big difference. Here are a few easy ways to help someone who is living with incontinence: • Make sure there is an easy and unobstructed path to the toilet and that it is easy to find. Leaving the toilet light on at night and/or nightlights can make it easier to get there in a hurry. Putting a commode, bedpan or urinal close to the bed or chair may also be an alternative if mobility is limited. • Increasing a person’s mobility is also a factor in encouraging regular toilet use and increasing the likelihood of reaching the toilet when needed. Regular walking or the use of assistance such as a walking stick or frame can help. • To avert incidents as best as possible, use the bathroom regularly (once every couple of hours, or even once every hour). If caring for someone

provide plenty of time and privacy so that they don’t feel pressured and have enough time to empty their bladder or bowels. • Be prepared for any incidents that may occur. Keep a good stock of absorbent products and hygiene products handy for wherever you may need them (and an easy means of disposing of them hygienically), try not to focus too much on any incident and deal with it in a calm and organised manner. For more advice on how to manage incontinence effectively visit our website at www.allaboutincontinence.co.uk. Allanda are incontinence experts and one of the U.K.’s leading independent suppliers of incontinence products. Here’s what some of our customers have said: “Really great service and products, can not fault you.” “If the rest of the country were run as efficiently as this company it would be a better place for it. Always courteous and considerate, with an unfailingly prompt delivery.”

Don’t let incontinence worry you - stay confident and dry Incontinence products direct to your door

• Easy - Products delivered directly to your door – no having to carry bulky items home or around the shops. • Massive range – shops carry very little and often only for “lighter” conditions – we have over 300 items in stock so have products for everyone’s needs, no matter what their level of continence or mobility. • Bed Protection products as well as Pads, Pants and Skincare. • Next working day delivery on orders over £25 and FREE delivery on orders over £50. • Low cost – we buy direct from manufacturers so pass on the savings to the customer PLUS many customers will qualify for VAT exemption so won’t have to pay VAT if for personal use. Allanda are the incontinence experts offering a large range of products from leading brands like that will keep you dry and comfortable throughout the day. Recycle

your waste water Many of us already have water butts and they’re a fantastic way to utilise all that lovely free rainwater so characteristic of this country. But what about other sources of water? I’m thinking about grey water here. Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household waste water apart from toilet water, which is considered ‘black water’, and which should not be recycled by the average gardener. Reclaiming water from your washing machine or dishwasher can prove costly and time consuming. The best advice for most amateur eco-gardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance.

So this means water from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool.

First you have to get it to the garden and this is actually remarkably easy. In the case of washing-up simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink. For baths and paddling pools ask your garden centre or local DIY store for a simple water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Next you need to clean the water. All this involves is filtering it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. Use it within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up. Many of us are now on water meters so it not only makes good environmental sense to recycle water, it ,makes sound economic sense too.

Top Tips Keep it simple - It is possible to buy special kits to convert all your home’s grey water for gardenusage but these can prove expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and easy. If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it! Think natural - Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants. Don’t forget the shower - Put the plug in when you shower and you can save the water for the garden. Safety-first - All grey water will contain some bacteria. Use it within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for pots and containers, only on decorative border plants. Think laterally - You don’t have to restrict greywater to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too!

Victoria Beale, Founder Business Expo 3.0 in her own words…. Having lived and breathed the networking scene as an employee and as a business owner for the last 12 years in Milton Keynes, it became apparent that things needed to evolve and the business community within MK wanted more bacon for their buck! And rightly so! With this in mind I created the Business Expo 3.0 concept back in March 2012 and invited 14 businesses from all across the U.K to join my quest to create the largest and most diverse event the MK business community had ever seen. The exhibition was intended for Micro’s, SME’s, Corporates, Blue Chips, attracting international as well as national visitors on the day.

My company Rapid Sales Solutions LTD is moving into it’s second year and Business Expo 3.0 has captivated the U.K business community to such an extent that we are able to assist our own clients with increased business growth and a richer contact base. The event is deemed to be the largest business exhibition to have been held in Milton Keynes on record and for this we are also extremely proud. So far we have sold and reserved 30 exhibition stands, including Companies House, Intellectual Property Office, Jonathan Vowles Chartered Accountants, Mirus IT, MK Council, Invest MK (to name a few), 9 months ahead of the big day and expect a complete ‘sell out’ before Christmas 2013. It really is very exciting!

On Friday 8th March 2013 the vision became a reality and we welcomed over 1400 business visitors, 80 exhibitors including Santander Corporate, UKTI, Companies House (to name a few), 11 keynote speakers, 16 workshops and a variety of Government dignitaries, including Shadow Secretary of State Chukka Ummna MP, Lord Younger, Mark Lancaster MP, Iain Stewart MP to stadiumMK. Business Expo 3.0 - be smart, think global was designed to encourage Businesses Leaders and Senior Managers to network with thousands of potential suppliers and prospective clients in just one day, whilst advancing their knowledge and expertise in global, online communication.

Not only that, we have an outstanding promotional team helping to promote the event to thousands of business professionals, internationally – MK Flyers, Spindle Tree, Mobile Apps for Biz, Tash Developments, MK College, 4N Networking, My Video Express and More Business From the Web. So, if you’re a professional or company owner looking to promote, network, educate or inspire locally, nationally or internationally then make sure you register your free place for next year’s event to be held at stadiumMK , Stadium Way, Milton Keynes, MK1 1ST on Thursday 6th March 2014. Future Reserves 2020 – White Paper Announcement by Secretary of State for Defence The Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, announced on 3rd July, 2013 the results of the White Paper on Future Reserves 2020. The detail can be found at the links below, but here are some generic bullet points summarising the white paper. Future Reserves 2020 (FR20) was the result of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review which demonstrated how the armed forces would be restricted to meet future threats. It is designed to deliver a new structure to meet the needs of a smaller, more flexible and agile Armed Forces in order to meet threats as they evolve and will involve an increase in the proportion and operational involvement of Reserves of all three of the UK’s Armed Forces. The Reservists will be gradually integrated into a single “Whole Force” with their Regular counterparts and will require being more available for training, readiness and deployment. The “Territorial Army” will be renamed “Army Reserve”. The White Paper recognises the pivotal role played by Employers and families in making Reservists available for service. Incentives for Employers are listed below from a Ministry of Defence publication entitled “Reserves in the Future Force 2020: Valuable and Valued”: “We will provide new financial awards to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises when their reservists are mobilised. We will revise the financial assistance regulations to ensure that the levels of financial assistance provided to employers are appropriate and streamlined. We will better explain the benefits of reserve service and extend civilian accreditation of skills, training and experience provided by the military. We will introduce a new scheme to recognise supportive employers underpinned by the Corporate Covenant We will develop an open and predictable relationship by: Ensuring that reservists notify employers of their reserve status subject to security considerations Notifying employers of the training programme annually Providing notice of mobilisation and periods when a reservist is at high readiness for mobilisation Providing relevant feedback on what a reservist ahs achieved during a period of reserve service. We will introduce a new National Relationship Management scheme to establish strategic personnel relationships with major employer organisations,

40 mkflyers

relevant trade bodies and the largest employers. We will work with employers and education organisations to develop opportunities for both the employer, the reservist and Defence in the transition period between education and work, including for those no in education, employment or training.” A number of high level key messages have been published and the following relate to employers: “Key Message: Employers play a key role in enabling reservists to take their place in defence of the Nation. Their support has been crucial to the mobilisation of our Reservists in such large numbers over the last 10 years. The future relationship may need some incentives, which could include a cross-Government commitment to support employers who encourage volunteering; the public sector will take the lead in setting an example. Key Message: Following publication of the White Paper on Future Reserves 2020 there will be a natural nervousness about the new conditions of Reserve Service until they have been seen ‘in action’, but it can be seen from the White Paper that the MoD will attempt to match any increased commitment with increased incentive for employers. Deployments (in the foreseeable future) are not anticipated to exceed current levels to any great degree and any employer concerns will be listened to. The MoD will ensure that use of the Reserves is as predictable as possible to help Reservists, their families and employers to plan ahead. Key Message: Defence recognises that the needs of employers must be understood and respected; as part of a wider Defence initiative, the Armed Forces will enter into a dialogue and partnerships with the employers of reservists. Through partnering with employers, we seek to identify and better exploit those areas which mutually benefit the employer, the Forces and the individual, and pilot projects under the Partnering for Talent programme will be in place from September.” If you are interested in finding out more, the White Paper ‘Reserves in the Future Force 2020’ and the Army Reserve’s future basing and structure are available on the Ministry of Defence website. Lastly, a number of background documents will be accessible through the SERFCA website by the end of the week. The Muster is coming... The fifth Newport Muster, a festival of walks in and around Newport Pagnell, will be held on Saturday 14th September 2013.

New for the Picnic Walk this year is a “Picnic Point” hosted by the Newport Pagnell Carnival Court. Here is where you will get your Walk Card checked plus they promise to have music, soft drinks and maybe some light refreshments! We also will have a “Willen Competition” for the younger walkers (maybe with a bit of help from Mum or Dad!) The six mile walk is a Garrison Town Walk which focuses on Newport Pagnell as a Garrison Town in the Civil War of 1642-1646. The nine mile Walk in the Country takes you out into the beautiful countryside surrounding Newport Pagnell.

And the 15 mile walk is A Stately Ramble. Not for the faint hearted, this is a challenging and rewarding walk that takes you past our “stately homes”, ie Gayhurst House, Tyringham Hall and Chichley Hall.

Further information and how to register can be found on our website www.newportmuster.org.uk. If you would like to walk with us but do not want to walk on your own, please let us know at newportmuster@hotmail.co.uk and we will do our best to find you a group to walk with.

The Story of The Suki Woodland Memorial Trust We all know tragic stories of terrible things that happen to ordinary people, but we never think it will happen to us. This is the story of Suki and her husband (whom we will call John) over the first few months of 2013. Suki and John were happily married and working hard on his DJ and Karaoke business when, in January this year, he suffered a burst brain aneurysm. The bleed in his brain was immense and it was touch and go as to whether he would live. It was Suki’s fast reactions to call an ambulance just in time that saved him. He was rushed to hospital and within 24 hours was in the Neuro Critical Care Unit in Addenbrookes, Cambridge. Over the next 7 weeks, Suki anxiously visited the hospital, first staying in a local hotel and then travelling daily between Cambridge and Milton Keynes, trying desperately to come to terms with this new and difficult situation. Every day she worked with the doctors, nurses and his parents to encourage John back to consciousness. All this was very draining on her resources, especially as she suffered from Fibromyalgia.

42 mkflyers

Gradually she reached a point where she could no longer continue. Exhausted and run down, she caught swine flu and within a week was in hospital herself. Her body was drained and had nothing left to fight with and, on 17th March 2013, she died – on her 40th birthday. We, her family, were devastated. Because Suki passionately believed in greener energy, re-cycling, freecycling and real conservation we set up the Suki Woodland Memorial Trust to promote a fully accessible, tranquil wildlife-friendly woodland in her name. You can read more about Suki and the trust at www. sukiwoodlandtrust.org. This is an ambitious project and we would appreciate anything you can do to help us make it happen. All donations are very gratefully received and if you feel there is more you can do we would love to hear from you (there is a form you can fill in on the website). John’s story is still ongoing – he is now back in Milton Keynes, walking and talking and getting a lot of help and support from family and friends. However, he may never remember who Suki was or what she did for him. His family have requested we don’t reveal his true identity.

Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.

“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.

Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.

“Our units currently provide work for around a thousand people and we have seen that figure rise steadily,” said Dominic Muscat, a director of the company that owns the business.

Introducing Secklow Sounds - your local radio station Currently available online at www.secklowsounds.org but with future plans to transmit on FM, Secklow Sounds is the local radio station serving the people of Milton Keynes. As a 24-hour station, in addition to live and repeat broadcasts, ‘on-demand’ show recordings are available through the website with many also uploaded to Spreaker and Mixcloud. The programmes are presented by an enthusiastic and committed team of 50 volunteers from all backgrounds and age groups, each bringing their own specialities on a wide array of music and other topics. The station is proud of its wide range of programmes that reflect the tastes of every type of listener. These include broadcasts on just about every kind of music genre, the arts, business, current affairs, religion, local interests and nostalgia. Secklow Sounds was the brainchild of station director and founder, Mike Johnson - winner of the 2000 Andrew Cross award for the best programme by a Restricted Services Station. The ethos is to create a friendly, family environment to bring people and communities together. In addition to the regular programme content, presenters interview local interest groups, entertainers, business people, charity organisers and others on-air and attend local events. This station’s role is succinctly summed up by Mike Johnson: “The intention is to bring together people from all backgrounds to produce an unrivalled variety of programmes celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, music, food and traditions that is Milton Keynes, and will include business, health, sports,

46 mkflyers

the arts, faith and non-faith groups. As a community station we will encourage participation from all citizens, defending their interest and reflecting their views. Cultural diversity is at the heart of Secklow Sounds and all ideas can be debated in our programmes, and a multiplicity of views will be fairly presented.” Secklow Sounds works in partnership with local organisations including Inter-Action MK who provide facilities at its headquarters for the studio. In return the station provides radio production and presentation training to its user groups. One

programme project: ‘The Groovy Gecko Radio Show’ involves young adults with learning difficulties. Shows are also presented by students aged from 14 to 16 and the station actively provides work experience for students studying media. If you have some free time, especially during the daytime and would like to contribute as part of Secklow Sounds’ family of presenters, please contact Mike Johnson on 07757 816316 or by email to mike@secklowsounds.org.

Sports Massage As a sports therapist Does It Hurt? Massage isn’t a gentle relaxing I deal with a variety of Sports treatment as you would expect from a spa but that doesn’t mean it isn’t sporting injuries on a health beneficial. The first time you receive a massage it will hurt! We have to break daily basis. down knots, work on tight muscles, break

fascial bonds and generally manipulate joints to bring the body back into alignment. But after a couple of treatments most of my clients report the initial pain subsides and the deep massage feels really good.

How Often Do I Need It?

No surprise there! But increasingly I am faced with more and more clients suffering from neck and shoulder issues relating to sitting in front of a computer all day, driving long distances or hunched over a mobile phone playing the latest in a long line of Facebook games! It’s encouraging to think that more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of Sports Massage in dealing with these problems but there are still many people who have yet to discover the delights of a good manipulation session with a sports therapist. The term “Sports” Massage is somewhat of a misnomer as you don’t need to be an active sportsperson to benefit. The treatment stems from the gyms and sporting clubs who employ a physical therapist to work on their players and to help with sporting injuries. But an injury is an injury no matter how it was obtained.

48 mkflyers

Most non sporting clients I see wait until they can barely move or are in agony before seeking advice. Something we all do, whatever the problem, and something I am guilty of myself! Because of this it may take a few treatments to loosen up the tight areas, free up joints and return the body to full movement. At this point the pain and discomfort has almost gone and many people will go back to their everyday lives, sitting at a computer, driving long distances and playing computer games. Three months later the pain and restricted movement is back and we start all over again. The answer to this is regular maintenance massages to keep the muscles supple and joints free, coupled with regular exercise and stretches, most of which can be done easily in the workplace. Modern life places many strains on our bodies causing pain and discomfort but we don’t have to just put up with it anymore. Regular visits to a Manual Therapist will help to fight the onset of muscular pain and keep us fit and healthy way into old age.
