The Well Being Therapy Centre was established in March 2011 by two very experienced counsellors, Lynda Gilbert and Marise Cohen, to offer a new counselling service to the people of Milton Keynes Originally based at The Well in Willen, we moved in September 2011 to The Quaker Centre in Downhead Park.

Spring is fast approaching, the snow is trying to melt and you can’t help but think there is a bit of a mystical air around Milton Keynes at the moment. In keeping with the seasons, I have kicked off some new projects and campaigns around Milton Keynes and already we are seeing results.
Rapid Sales Solutions. The Expo will see businesses from across Milton Keynes and afar coming together to network and also showcase what they do. I am delighted to have managed to have secured the new Business Minister Lord James Younger to attend and open the event, to be held at the MK Dons Stadium from 8.45am onwards. Milton Keynes has one of the largest small business start up rates in the country and this is a brilliant way to bring them together to encourage collaborations which wouldn’t necessarily occur otherwise.
Last month saw the first ever MP’s Jobs Fair for young people in MK. Unemployment in Milton Keynes is low at 3.1% but youth unemployment is slightly higher so Iain Stewart, MP for MK South and I decided we wanted to do something about it. With over 33 businesses in attendance including Home Retail Group, Santander, Railcare, Network Rail and Whitbread (to name a few), with real jobs on offer, we held the jobs fair at the Buszy in Central Milton Keynes. Over 300 young people attended the event and already we have been contacted by companies saying they have offered jobs to some of those in attendance. It was a great day and I am really pleased it helped lift some young people out of unemployment. I know Iain and I are keen to make it a regular thing and we are hoping to hold another one in the not so distant future. On the 8th March Milton Keynes will see its first Business Expo being held by Victoria Beale from
Focussing on helping businesses, I have been working closely with the market traders from Milton Keynes in order to ensure their place remains in the heart of our city. Last month I delivered a petition of over 10,000 signatures to this effect, to the Chief Executive of the council and I know the council have paid particular attention. With the application for the new Primark in CMK being withdrawn following the council’s recommendation for refusal, it is clear that they are sticking to their word and I hope that we will now see some improvements made to the market area, led by the market traders. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”

Thoracic outlet syndrome Thoracic outlet syndrome involves the compression of nerves and arteries as they pass between the anterior and middle scalene muscles in the neck. The symptoms: Thoracic outlet syndrome affects the nerves and the arteries passing into the hands and arms. If the compression is affecting the nervous system, then symptoms can include pain, numbness and tingling fingers, pain in the neck and shoulders, aching arms and hands or a weak grip. If the compression is affecting the circulatory system, then you could see a discoloration of the hands or arms, a weak pulse or arm pain and swelling. These symptoms are caused by decreased blood flow into the arms through the subclavian vein and artery.

It could also be caused by repetitive lifting of the arms and over-use of the wrists and arms, such as swimmers, rock climbers or weightlifters. It could also come about through trauma, such as a car accident causing damage to the clavicle.
So what is going on?
What can be done?
The neck consists of seven vertebrae stacked one on top of the other. Small openings between the vertebrae allow for nerves to exit the spinal cord and into the body, in this case the arms. As the nerves leave the spinal cord, they form a web-like interchange, rather like criss crossing highways complete with exit ramps, called the brachial plexus. Two muscles extend down from the neck and attach to the first rib underneath the collar bone. These muscles, the anterior and middle scalenes, pass either side of the brachial plexus. The image shows the proximity of the scalene muscles to the brachial plexus and blood vessels.
The scalene muscles can be released using pressure techniques to the muscles in the neck. Often times, there will be a trigger point, a hard muscular knot, just under the clavicle, at the base of the front of the neck. This can be released using pressure into the trigger point until the point looses sensitivity. Mobilisation techniques can be used to restore movement to the neck, freeing the neck and allowing you to turn the head further than previously allowed. There may be cases where thoracic outlet syndrome is not caused by muscular tension. This may require surgery to alleviate.

Wear a hat on March 28th and join the nation in helping to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research On the 28th of March 2013, Brain Tumour Research, along with our brilliant family of member charities, fundraising groups and supporters, will be encouraging everyone across the UK to wear a hat. Our annual Wear A Hat Day has captured the nation’s imagination for several years now, proving to be increasingly popular. It is no surprise that it is now the UK’s premier brain tumour awareness event.
As well as donating a pound or two to wear a hat for the day, you can also easily raise even more money for Brain Tumour Research by selling the four Wear A Hat Day badges designed by the charity for this event. With new designs each year, these badges have become popular and collectable. This year’s designs include a Mortarboard (as worn by academic students and staff), an Easter Bonnet, a Builder’s Hard Hat and a Royal Crown — one to suit every taste. The badges will be available to order from the Brain Tumour Research charity in February as part of its fundraising pack.

Local radio returns to MK ...on digital radio The first new full time local radio station for 24 years is about to launch in Milton Keynes.
Digital radio listening now makes up a third of all radio listening with 25 million people tuning in every week, a figure which is continuing to increase (Source: official RAJAR listening figures released last week).
MKFM is preparing to bring a full community radio service to MK on the new local DAB Digital Radio multiplex.
In fact, eight out of the ten most popular cars now have digital radio fitted as standard and the government is expected to announce a date for a radio ‘digital switchover’ this year.
MKFM has been campaigning for the return of dedicated local broadcasting for two years and new technology means the station can now launch as a digital radio service. The new local DAB signal from Bow Brickhill will also bring BBC 3 Counties Radio, Heart Home Counties and Gold to digital radio in Milton Keynes for the first time. Pete Winkleman and local MP Iain Stewart will switch on the transmitter at Bletchley Park’s Museum of Radio on Thursday 14th February at 8.45am with presenters from MKFM, Heart and the BBC broadcasting live. MKFM will bring a mix of local news, travel, weather and sport alongside music and community information with all programmes presented from studios in Milton Keynes including the iconic ‘pod’ outside Xscape. The recent snow proved how valuable local information is to the community and MKFM received hundreds of messages of thanks for providing detailed school closure and local weather information. With the support of Milton Keynes Council, our local MP’s and the community, MKFM will continuing to campaign for a local FM license which will be available next year however DAB Digital Radio brings the opportunity to provide a true local service up to 18 months earlier than FM. There’s never been a better time to launch a local digital radio station – with sets costing as little as £15, 22 million adults now own a digital radio, that’s 42.3% of the UK population, and in Milton Keynes the figure is thought to be even higher.
Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Catriona Morris said “I have seen MKFM everywhere across Milton Keynes, It’s absolutely fundamental that Milton Keynes has its own Radio Station in this growing city. There’s lots going on in the city, lots to be proud about. It’s really really important we have our own local radio station.” Chris Gregg, MKFM Programme Director said: “We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring local radio back to Milton Keynes on Digital Radio. Our test transmissions are now on air and we’ll be launching a full local service at the end of April.” Darren Dorrington MKFM Commercial Director added: ‘’ Milton Keynes is one of the fastest growing places in the UK. Milton Keynes youngster pulls out all the stops to secure construction apprenticeship Proving an inspiration to today’s youth by getting his foot on the first rung of the construction career ladder is Tristan Welch, a new apprentice at Crest Nicholson Regeneration’s Oakgrove Village development in Milton Keynes. Not only has Tristan secured a construction apprenticeship during these tough economic times, but he has done so in an extremely innovative and highly inspiring way. Following his interview and having been told that the apprenticeship was his if he could secure his own transport for his 14-mile journey from his home in Flitwick to Milton Keynes, Tristan immediately set about obtaining his own wheels. He discovered ‘Wheels for Work’, a council-run charity which lends transport to youngsters, enabling them to secure work. Having impressed them with his enthusiasm for his new job and his determination to make the job a reality, for the next nine months, Tristan is the proud owner of an Yamaha Jog 50cc moped and, as a result, is on his way to becoming a qualified bricklayer. Debbie Aplin, Managing Director for Crest Nicholson Regeneration, said: “This is such an inspiring story of what can be achieved if there is a strong desire to do so. There are so many negative reports about young people that for a story such as this to come to light is wonderful. Tristan really impressed us at his interview; his dedication, enthusiasm and tenacity shone through and, by securing his own transport through these unusual means, he has clearly demonstrated these skills – and all this before he set foot on site. We are also grateful to ‘Wheels for Work’ for supporting Tristan; this is a great initiative and one that makes a real difference. “Tristan’s site manager and colleagues have nothing but praise for him; he is certainly one of our rising stars. We are delighted to have been able to offer him this opportunity and I wish him every success with his career. “Crest Nicholson has always been committed to investing in the next generation. Apprentices currently make up 8% of our entire workforce and investing in their future training and skills by providing practical projects and experience is a key priority for the company. It is very important that construction companies provide employment opportunities to school and
college leavers. The construction industry employs nearly one tenth of the entire UK workforce; it is a major driver for recovery and growth; continued investment is essential to secure our country’s future economy.” Tristan (21) said: “I am so happy to undertake my apprenticeship with Crest Nicholson. I love being part of the team here and I am learning so much every day. Building and construction is exactly what I want to do with my life and I am being trained by some of the best in the business. “I love my moped. It gives me a great sense of freedom and, together with my new job, I really feel that a new chapter of my life has started. I can only borrow the scooter for nine months before I have to return it to ‘Wheels for Work’ but I am saving money every week to buy my own when my contract runs out. “My job has made such a difference to my life. I had to leave home at 17 and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. After a few false starts, I realised that I didn’t want a regular 9-5 officebound job; I wanted to be outside, working with my hands to create something. Since completing my bricklaying course and joining Crest Nicholson’s apprenticeship scheme, I feel like I am on the right track and heading in the right direction.” Tristan concludes: “I definitely recommend apprenticeship schemes to other school and college leavers. Building someone’s home is really rewarding and every day is different so you never get bored – plus, you earn while you learn. I feel really positive about the future and where my life is going.” Crest Nicholson Regeneration has just launched the first phase of homes at Oakgrove Village, situated in Middleton to the south east of central Milton Keynes.
