Kilimanjaro success again for local health charity The Milton Keynes based charity Climb Your Mountain (CYM) is celebrating another successful climb of Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing mountain (5,895m). The team of 10 successfully climbed the mountain and raised about £10,000 for the charity. This was the 6th Kilimanjaro trip for the charity and they have an exceptional summit success rate. Charlie Wardle, the founder of CYM, who was on his 4th trip said “Once again the team were brilliant and fully deserve their success and experience of a lifetime. The preparation, training, fundraising and hard work was all worthwhile.”

CYM offers many of these challenges like Kilimanjaro, the Inca Trail, Everest Base Camp, Mount Toubkal and Great Wall of China and in the UK many weekend mountain trips to help raise funds for the charity and for people to have a great experience.

This year seems to be flying by and as we approach April rapidly and the shops fill with Easter eggs (that I don’t seem to be able to resist!) I am pleased to be able to reflect on what my office and I have achieved so far this year. Whilst we are always busy, this year we have been trying to dedicate time focussing on issues that are particularly affecting Milton Keynes and trying to bring people together and offer practical support to those affected. Already, Iain Stewart and I have held a Jobs Fair for the young unemployed in our city, launched campaigns to raise funds for a new A and E and another one to raise awareness of the difficulties people are facing with domestic violence. Considering the great focus which has been held over cost of living and rise in food prices Iain and I decided to hold a food forum. This saw us bring together charities who distribute food to those in need around Milton Keynes, like the Food Bank and The Food Cupboard at St Mary’s Church Bletchley and also food suppliers such as Tesco, Tea Monkey and Asda. The aim of the forum was to see how the different organisations across our city could help each other to support our local community, in particular those who are in great need of food. This includes homeless people and also those families who are struggling to make ends meet. It was incredible to see hear of some of the work which is going on already in Milton Keynes and also how everyone intends to support each other further. I know that Iain and I are keen to hold the forum again if only to help ensure more progress is made. I was pleased recently in having some success in helping the Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council. I was contacted by Council and some community groups concerned that they would have to spend over £10,000

in legal fees in order to release the Hodge Lea Meeting Place from the Crown Estates. On writing to the Crown Estate Solicitors asking for them to reconsider the amount they were going to charge the Town Council and pressing for a representative to come and see the site to discuss the issue, the Town Council have now been offered to buy the meeting place for £1 and to pay a contribution for solicitors fees providing its use will be for the community. I am absolutely delighted that such a useful amenity can now be potentially used by residents with very little cost to the local community. I know that Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council have been working very hard to secure the Meeting Places future and I am pleased that common sense finally seems to have prevailed. Milton Keynes so often flies the flag for business but since I last wrote our city was selected as the
best place outside of London to do business in the UK. It is no surprise considering this prowess, that businesses in Milton Keynes have been offering so many apprenticeships which have been proven to save firms money. You may have seen that last month the Prime Minister visited MK to launch National Apprenticeships Week. Mercedes Benz who have a base near Willen, recently invested £2.1 million into a Training Academy which sees 380 apprenticeships studied a year. Across Milton Keynes a total of 2230 people started apprenticeships in 2011/2012 and another 650 have started in the first quarter of this academic year. This equates to a 99% increase since 2010 and shows that taking an apprenticeship is a very good alternative to taking a degree. Kents Hill Care Home resident celebrates 103rd birthday Resident Dorothy Belton celebrated her 103rd birthday on Sunday 24th February. More than 25 family members along with friends, staff and fellow residents marked this momentous occasion with Dorothy. A fabulous sing along with a 1940’s style singer ensured the party could be heard throughout the Home and beyond. Dorothy is the eldest Resident at Kents Hill Care Home and also one of the oldest ladies in Milton Keynes. Born in Manchester in 1910 she married widower Mr. Alfred Belton in 1931 who had three sons which gave Dorothy an immediate family. Dorothy and Alfred had four children, three boys and one girl.

In the late 1930’s the family moved to North Bedford. In the 1950’s Dorothy joined the Diplomatic Wireless Service at Hanslope Park, as a cook. In time, she was promoted to Head Cook and worked at Hanslope Park until she retired. Dorothy moved to Kents Hill Care Home just before her 90th birthday and has had many wonderful birthdays with family and staff. Dorothy and Alfred had seven children between them which produced an extended family of seven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and two more will be arriving soon. Manager Gillian Graham said, “It was such a wonderful celebration with so many friends and family creating a special atmosphere for an extra special lady.”

On May 2nd Team Urban Cycle plan to cycle the 202 miles from London to Paris in the bid to raise in excess of £5,000 for Willen Hospice and are looking to the local community and business’ for help in achieving this. The team are Darren Smylie, Alex Foster, Gary Egan, Richard Egan, Jon Ridgway, Lionel Plummer and Joel Mcbrearty, they are funding all costs themselves to ensure all money raised goes directly to the Hospice. The 202 miles will be completed over 3 consecutive days of cycling and with the ferry booked and the route mapped out there is no turning back for the 7 strong team. Fitting training around work and family commitments on Friday nights and Sunday mornings, the team have already clocked up around 400 training miles.

Introducing Secklow Sounds - your local radio station Currently available online at www.secklowsounds.org but with future plans to transmit on FM, Secklow Sounds is the local radio station serving the people of Milton Keynes. As a 24-hour station, in addition to live and repeat broadcasts, ‘on-demand’ show recordings are available through the website with many also uploaded to Spreaker and Mixcloud. The programmes are presented by an enthusiastic and committed team of 50 volunteers from all backgrounds and age groups, each bringing their own specialities on a wide array of music and other topics. The station is proud of its wide range of programmes that reflect the tastes of every type of listener. These include broadcasts on just about every kind of music genre, the arts, business, current affairs, religion, local interests and nostalgia. Secklow Sounds was the brainchild of station director and founder, Mike Johnson - winner of the 2000 Andrew Cross award for the best programme by a Restricted Services Station. The ethos is to create a friendly, family environment to bring people and communities together. In addition to the regular programme content, presenters interview local interest groups, entertainers, business people, charity organisers and others on-air and attend local events. This station’s role is succinctly summed up by Mike Johnson: “The intention is to bring together people from all backgrounds to produce an unrivalled variety of programmes celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, music, food and traditions that is Milton Keynes, and will include business, health, sports,

the arts, faith and non-faith groups. As a community station we will encourage participation from all citizens, defending their interest and reflecting their views. Cultural diversity is at the heart of Secklow Sounds and all ideas can be debated in our programmes, and a multiplicity of views will be fairly presented.” Secklow Sounds works in partnership with local organisations including Inter-Action MK who provide facilities at its headquarters for the studio. In return the station provides radio production and presentation training to its user groups. One
programme project: ‘The Groovy Gecko Radio Show’ involves young adults with learning difficulties. Shows are also presented by students aged from 14 to 16 and the station actively provides work experience for students studying media. Small businesses will lead the way in 2013, says company whose tenants already employ 1000 people Milton Keynes will boom in 2013, says the town’s largest serviced business premises provider, as the number of people employed in its units tops 1000 at the close of 2012.
“As Milton Keynes business booms, led by small businesses, we are already identifying potential new units that can be converted to provide the premises needed for small companies to thrive without hassle.”
Bucks Biz, with over 400,000 square feet of space and 150 tenants in Bletchley and Denbigh, says it is already planning more units to cope with the expected growth in demand and bringing forward plans to develop extra space at the huge Interchange House in Howard Way.
Bucks Biz, with units all over Milton Keynes, is renowned for straight talking and dealing; not hiding costs and not charging for many of the little things that keep businesses ticking, but which can be annoying to the point of distraction. “We really believe that if our customers are happy, then they’ll be free to get on with their businesses, which in turn will expand,” added Dominic.
