Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart

2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT
“The word of the Divine Heart breathes only charity.”
ST. MADELEINE SOPHIE BARAT

Dear Partners in the Mission of Woodlands Academy,

This past fiscal year was successful because of the time, talent and treasure so many gave to Woodlands Academy. Because of your generous support, Woodlands was able to commit itself fully to educate to the Five Goals. And because of you, we were able to provide an experience that Niche has ranked as the best Catholic school education and best all girls school experience in Illinois once again.

During school year 2021-2022 Woodlands was able to fully transition beyond COVID. We could not have done so without our dedicated faculty and staff who provided an exceptional educational experience through personal, engaging and interactive instruction, and unique and compelling programs. They chose to work at Woodlands Academy to support its mission and to work in an environment where they are able know their students, understand their students’ strengths, and provide support when needed.

In pursuit of its mission, Woodlands’ efforts encourage young women to be responsible for their own paths in learning, growing, acting and leading. Students are motivated to pursue interests and opportunities, to better themselves and their communities. Within the classroom, Woodlands students challenge themselves in a wide range of courses and do so successfully; nearly half of the Class of 2022 were Illinois State Scholars ranking academically in the top 10% of students statewide. From a fifth consecutive year as team state finalists for the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition to multiple gold awards in chorus and orchestra at the St. Louis Heritage Festival, our students pursued school extracurriculars with passion and success. They seek participation beyond the Woodlands walls as well; while students are required to provide 70 hours of service over the course of four years, they leave Woodlands having given as many as 250 hours to help others.

The Woodlands community supports a diverse and inclusive enrollment, roughly a third of whom receive financial aid. It is through your generosity that regardless of their financial situation, the most qualified young women are able to attend Woodlands Academy, ensuring their growth in intellect, faith and purpose. And like all independent schools, Woodlands relies on donors to assist in funding the difference between tuition and the full cost of educating every student; all of our young women benefit from your gifts.

Thank you again for your continued support which assists us in building a strong foundation of mind, body and spirit in our students. We are most grateful.

With sincere appreciation,

Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Chair of the Board of Trustees

A Tradition of Service

Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart is sincerely grateful for the long tradition of service by our Woodlands Parents Association (WAPA), Woodlands Academy Alumnae Association, and Alumnae Parent Connection (APC). While every member of the Woodlands community has served the school in a wide variety of ways, of the names listed here are those who spent an extraordinary amount their own time this past year to enhance the Woodlands experience for our students.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Members of Woodlands

Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Class of 2022 received their diplomas during the 163rd Graduation Ceremony held June 2 in the Woodlands

Chapel of the Sacred Heart.

Classmates selected senior Charlotte Sparks to address the assembly on behalf of the graduating class. She began by reflecting on some of the unique issues that came to mind as they entered an all-girls high school. For example, would they miss some necessary high school experiences? “I’m happy to answer that question with a no,” Sparks said. “Although we didn’t realize that from the start, teachers, staff and administration created the best environment that I know no other school would be able to achieve. …The Sacred Heart

mission and its five goals have given us the tools and purpose to live meaningful lives in service to others.”

English teacher Erin Brysiewicz was chosen by students to be the ceremony’s faculty speaker. “When I look at you, I see women who shine,” she said. “Women who encourage one another, women with amazing talents, who speak out when you see something that isn’t right and follow through. Women who are brilliant and empathetic, enthusiastic and fearless.”

Brysiewicz said she feels lucky to have worked with her students during the past two COVID-19-impacted school years. “And even though, for some of you, I have only seen your full faces a few times, I see who you are. You, each one of you, are shining brightly,” she added.

Members of Woodlands Academy’s Class of 2022 departed their graduation ceremony en route to various enriching futures. A total of 120 institutions worldwide accepted college admission applications they submitted—from nearby ones such as University of Chicago, Notre Dame and Northwestern University to those further away, including nine other Big 10 schools, University of Glasgow, American University, The George Washington University, William and Mary, Drake University, Tulane University, and Wake Forest University.

We are immensely proud of our Class of 2022. The following is a list of the colleges/universities to which members of the class are matriculating.

MARY JANE RODDY, GRANDPARENT ‘23

Mary Jane Roddy attended Woodlands in the 1950’s before moving to a suburb closer to the City of Chicago. Grandmother to Aubrey ’23, she is the product of a Catholic, single-sex high school and college and has always been a supporter of faith-based educational institutions committed to educating the entire person-intellectually, morally and holistically. “Throughout her grandaughter’s four years at Woodlands, she has commented numerous times on her growth as a young woman filled with self-confidence, intrigued by the events occurring in her life and focused on building life-long friendships with her fellow Woodlands Students,” says Joe Roddy, Aubrey’s father. He adds that his mother’s closest friends are from her various schools, and she believes Woodlands provides that same fertile ground for young women to forge deep, meaningful friendships that stand the test of time. Mary Jane decided to earmark her generous multi-year gift to the Learning Center following her conversations with Aubrey about the amazing teachers and staff who have always been there for Aubrey and her classmates. Thank you, Mary Jane, and the entire Roddy family. Your generosity helps create an environment where our young women thrive.

VALERIE RICKERT

Faculty Member Dr. Valerie Rickert loves teaching science and she loves teaching it at Woodlands. Now in her fifth year, she and her husband, Robert, are proud financial supporters of the School, because “We believe in Woodlands.”

Valerie discovered Woodlands Academy years ago when she would bring her junior high students from a local Catholic grade school to the annual Woodlands Mathalon. Impressed by the campus and loving that the school is Catholic and allgirls, the former analytical chemist and researcher at Argonne National Labs decided to join Woodlands where her goal is to serve as a female science role model and prepare students for college and the STEM field. Her popularity among her students resulted in her being named her “Teacher of the Year” in 2022.

When asked why she chooses to teach at Woodlands, Valerie says “I like the atmosphere, academic freedom and the support we get from administration. I believe in all-girl schools. She adds that she believes It is beneficial for young women to attend an all-girls school during this time in their lives when they are going through so many life changes as they evolve into young women.

Thank you, Valerie and Robert, for your professional, personal and financial support of Woodlands. Your commitment helps make Woodlands a place for our students to thrive!

Mater Admirabilis Legacy Society

The story of Mater Admirabilis teaches us that many of the most beautiful gifts can be better appreciated after the passage of time. Many members of our community look back fondly on their years at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and commit themselves to helping Woodlands far into the future. It is because of the foresight that those who commit to a planned gift become members of the Mater Admirabilis Society. Members are remembered at the Mater Admirabilis liturgy and are recognized in the annual report in perpetuity. We invite you to find out more and build your personal legacy by investing in the future of education at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart.

Ways to Give

Woodlands Academy’s longstanding tradition of excellence is fueled by the ongoing generosity of our parents, alumnae, parents of alumnae, grandparents, faculty, and friends. Your support is vital to our Sacred Heart mission to educate and empower young women to change the world.

There are multiple ways in which you can realize a gift to the school, and we encourage you to consider which method of giving is best for you.

We Stand Ready to Help!
