a platform where all of you can participate on equal footing. At mjunction, this activity does not end with simply participating in the online platform. Rather, ideas which are received well by the maximum number of people are given a chance to present before everyone at regular internal gatherings which are attended by junctionites at all levels. The idea which is most liked and considered to be feasible by junctionites is thus chosen by a voting system. The presentations are sent to junctionites outside Kolkata well in advance and they can vote through SMS too.
Dear junctionites, By the time you read this, we would be well into the second quarter of FY18. In February this year mjunction turned 16 and thus it is in its mid-teens and at a crucial juncture in its life cycle. I have said earlier that it is waiting for that one big leap forward, and I believe it is the direction in which it will take that leap today, that will determine where it will land tomorrow. Based on deep analysis of our strengths and strategic advantages, a path has been identified to achieve the leap towards our aspirations. And all of us have agreed that having consolidated ourselves in some categories and having identified our strengths, it is time to spread our wings, to explore, and to make our presence felt in various other sectors and categories. A beginning has already been made with mjunction rapidly and aggressively chartering new territories. And it makes me proud that whether it is now or in the past, it is the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit that runs through each junctionite which has got mjunction where it is today. I believe the genesis lies in mjunction’s culture. The spirit of new ideas and innovation has always been encouraged, supported and given the space to grow at mjunction. In the last few years, we also decided to make this a part of the structured process, and therefore, a full-fledged Incubation Cell was set up to give a boost to this. This division is just what the name suggests – a place where ideas are nurtured and encouraged to germinate into value creating business opportunities and those that will have the potential to drive long-term growth. The Incubation Cell was formed in early 2012 with a group of executives from various existing business units. The Incubation Cell is entrusted with
the responsibility of identifying a business opportunity, doing a proof of concept for it, presenting it to top management, running a pilot post approval and then scaling it up once the pilot is successful. It is a continuous process and thus the Incubation Cell is a pipeline and tool for new business ideas to emerge at mjunction. I am glad that the Incubation Cell, despite being a separate entity, does not work in isolation. Rather, it is part of a well-honed culture of innovation. Again, in order to make innovation a part of a structured process and to involve each and every one of you in it, we have enrolled ourselves to be a part of Tata Ideas – a platform and a hub to promote, share and generate ideas and even seek solutions for challenges – and
The idea that receives the largest number of votes is then reviewed by a top management team and cleared for implementation if found feasible. Ideas are thus not pushed from the top. Rather, they are the culmination of a well thought out process that supports and encourages inclusive ideation. The Incubation Cell has had some successes – our Super Aggregator, Transaction Processing and Ocean Vessel Chartering businesses are cases in point. These have all become fullfledged businesses after they started as only an idea. The guide and the mentor have crucial roles to play in the Incubation Cell. The guide has to be a subject matter expert and has to have relevant industry connections. The mentor has to design and develop the project plan as well as design innovative ways of arriving at a solution. Let us all keep this entrepreneurial spirit of innovation alive at mjunction.
