Dear CIS Friends, Last year our Communities In Schools national office launched a new marketing campaign using the theme, #AllinforKids. We love it for several reasons, including the fact that one of our Site Coordinators and a CIS-Charlotte graduate are featured in the campaign materials. Jamall and Alina (on the cover of this Report) are CIS-Charlotte “rock stars” who have now appeared in a Times Square billboard, The Wall Street Journal, the LA airport, and magazines such as Travel & Leisure and People, to name just a few. But when it comes down to it, we love this campaign primarily because the slogan succinctly expresses our core value and purpose: to be #AllinforKids, every day and in every way.

We kept this theme in mind this past year as we implemented the first year of our VISION 2020 strategic plan. We made significant progress on our year-one goals, including the following major initiatives: • Realigned our programming teams to complement Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ (CMS) Learning Communities. This improves efficiency and ensures that students and families have a continuum of support through CMS school feeder patterns.

• Instituted an enhanced “Differentiated Services” model in 10 of our sites, with plans to implement the model across all of our sites by 2020. This service delivery model better identifies students’ level of need and matches them to a Site Coordinator trained to support those needs.

• Received recognition as one of three CIS affiliates (out of nearly 200 nationwide) to be named an IMPACT affiliate, a model of excellence for affiliates across the CIS network.

• Continued cultivating a strong CIS internal culture by initiating “Culture Champions” among our staff and through pro-bono work with The Center for Intentional Leadership.

Focusing on increased staff efficiencies and making a healthy workplace culture top priorities in 2016-17 has been intentional, with the ultimate goal of improving the services and care of students. I’m proud to say that CIS has some of the best, brightest, and most dedicated team members in this city who bring their hearts with them to work every day − they are the epitome of being #AllinforKids.

Our students continue to need your involvement and commitment to our work so that, together, we can ensure they have the resources and relationships necessary to be successful in school and prepared to live their very best lives.

Community Context

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Charlotte-Mecklenburg has experienced tremendous growth in the last two decades and the demographics continue to change. The gap between high and low income households is growing and the number of socio-economically stressed children and families in CMS schools has increased. Consider these facts: • Charlotte ranks third in the nation for the largest increase in the total number of residents living in poverty from 2000 to 2012.* • Charlotte-Mecklenburg has twice the number of people living in poverty compared to 10 years ago.* • Poverty is growing more concentrated. Charlotte- Mecklenburg has three times as many people living in poor areas compared to 10 years ago.*

A recent study of math and reading test scores from across the country found that parental socio- economic status and residential segregation are the strongest predictors of the academic achievement gap between white students and students of color.

Core Services and Specialized Interventions CIS Core Services

At the heart of our mission is to wrap intervention services around students and bring community resources into schools to empower success for all students, keeping them in school and on the path to graduation and post-secondary success.

Services are delivered through a case-management model with a laser focus on attendance, behavior, coursework, and parent engagement. CIS Site Coordinators work inside CMS schools with school staff, volunteers, and community partners to provide caring relationships and critical resources to students and families. Examples of support include attendance and academic assistance, basic needs, behavioral interventions, college/career readiness, leadership and life skills development, cultural enrichment, physical/mental health referrals, and parent engagement.

Safe Journey

With teen pregnancy and parenting come many challenges related to education, parenting skills, quality childcare, physical and mental health of both mother and child, and more. Studies show that nearly 50% of teen mothers do not graduate from high school by the age of 22 and 50% of teen mothers depend on government assistance within the first year of giving birth.

The Safe Journey program is for teens in Mecklenburg County who are pregnant or parenting and helps them complete their high school education, delay additional pregnancies, and connects them and their children to appropriate community resources. Last year Safe Journey served 86 teen mothers (and their babies) in 11 CMS high schools.

TRiO Talent Search

The TRiO “Talent Search” program provides career exploration and college admission support services to low income and would-be first generation college students. Activities include college advisement, tutoring, campus tours, financial literacy programs, assistance with college and financial aid applications, SAT/ACT preparation, cultural enrichment, and workshops for the families of participants. The program is funded by a federal TRiO grant. The most recent grant enabled CIS to expand the program from two high schools to four, essentially doubling the number of students CIS is able to serve through TRiO. Schools with TRiO include Harding, Olympic, West Charlotte, and West Mecklenburg high schools.

Re-Entry Program

In 2009, CIS-Charlotte formed a partnership with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in order to better support youthful offenders who are temporarily housed at the county’s Jail facilities. The program provides incarcerated students with continued education and counseling to get back on track to healthy behaviors, and resources that help expedite a successful transition back into a CMS school or another appropriate educational setting. At West Charlotte High School, CIS has additional efforts focused on continuing a smooth transition once back at the school and reducing recidivism of offenders. The younger siblings of offenders are also targeted for enrollment in CIS whenever possible.

Newcomer Services

In 2014, at the height of an unprecedented surge of unaccompanied children from Central America arriving at the U.S.Mexico border, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ English Language Learner (ELL) department partnered with CIS-Charlotte to establish an innovative program to address the socio-emotional needs of recently arrived immigrant children. Newcomer Services Site Coordinators help families connect to existing resources while also partnering with local organizations to address the overwhelming needs of these traumatized youth. Conversational English language programs, mental health group services, referrals to community organizations and advocacy at the school level are offered to support this fragile population.

CIS Site Coordinator LaSonya Curtiss knows the value of giving students recognition for a job well done, whether it is for improved grades, attendance or behavior. Dannei G. graduated from West Charlotte High School on June 14, 2017 – a day he calls “one of the best of my life.” Today he’s a student at CPCC, interested in a career as a diesel mechanic and investing in real estate. Dannei is smart and always made good grades, but in the ninth grade he made some poor decisions and ended up in jail for a week. He never would have made it through high school, much less attend college, he says, without the tight relationship he developed with CIS Site Coordinator George Metz and the members of a male mentoring group he met through Mr. Metz.

In schools to build trust.

Now a freshman at Wingate University, Sandra M. is a proud graduate of South Mecklenburg High School, Class of 2017. The road to college was not easy, however. Her family is originally from Honduras, and her parents know little English.

Sandra credits her CIS Site Coordinator Ebony Wilson for mitigating many of the obstacles she faced, and especially the way she built trust with her parents. Ms. Wilson knew that Sandra had amazing potential, so she took extra time and care to help Sandra’s mother feel comfortable with the college application process and what college could do for Sandra. Another young life encouraged to excel!

Lowcountry On The Green CIS was excited to host our annual Lowcountry event at a new location in 2016, The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. Power Plant Management Services (PPMS) Golf Tournament

Communities In Schools was grateful to again be the designated charity for Power Plant Management Services’ (PPMS) annual golf tournament, held October 13, 2016 at The Golf Club at Ballantyne. A pre-tournament reception and vendor showcase was held at The Ballantyne Lodge the evening before the tournament, where tournament golfers and vendors had the opportunity to meet CIS staff and learn more about the organization. In December, PPMS executives attended the CIS Board meeting to present the proceeds check in person. Many thanks to PPMS for organizing and hosting this annual event to benefit our students!

School Tools The School Tools Campaign experienced a record collection in 2017! More than 862,000 items were collected and distributed to nearly 200,000 students across the 22-county region the campaign serves. Communities In Schools, in partnership with Classroom Central and WSOC-TV, thanks the Charlotte community for supporting the campaign in August each year with their generous donations of school supplies.
