Young Scientist is a project addressed to 4-, 5- and 6-year olds designed to expand children’s knowledge of the surrounding world. Supervised by a teacher of English, preschool children make simple experiments, observations and tests to discover the rules of nature. The Young Scientist project lasts three years. Every week during a 45-minute class, children make 1-2 simple experiments combining physics, chemistry and biology. Each class ends with a short individual summary work. The project also includes long-term experiments, such as cultivating mould or measuring rainfall. Each month, a different topic is discussed. For example, in January children discover the functions of their senses and in May they investigate the properties of water and its cycle in nature. Children learn through play and experimenting. The popularity of classes has contributed to the development of cooperation with parents. An auxiliary form of project implementation, which consists in doing ‘homework’ projects by pupils and their parents, has been introduced. The results of individual activity are discussed on an internet forum and constitute the basis for further integration of preschool groups, being a great fun at the same time.
