Competition for Individual Teachers

Project objectives:

• motivating pupils to learn foreign languages by creating situations, in which the skill in indispensable, • stimulating interest in European culture as an important element of intercultural and international dialogue, as well as in architecture, music, literature, sports and traditions, • acquiring useful practical skills, such as buying souvenirs, paying in euro, orientation in a city, observing the comportment of residents of visited places, • drumming active, effective and conscious leisure.

A three-day trip to Vienna was preceded by studying tourist guides, maps of Europe and participation in the Mały Europejczyk (Small European) Poland-wide competition organised by Centrum Edukacji Szkolnej (School Education Centre) in Warsaw. Pupils learnt about composers who lived in Vienna, listened to their music, watched a film about Vienna and filled out work charts. The preparations were rounded off with the tasting of Apfelstrudel, a typical Vienna delicacy baked by mothers of pupils. During their stay in Vienna, the pupils saw: Schönbrunn, Hofburg, Kahlenberg and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. They bought souvenirs on their own and tasted Sacher’s cake at Aida patisserie near the cathedral. A three-day visit at partner school in Toepchin, Germany, the culminating point of which were presentations on the works of Astrid Lindgren.

The presentation by pupils from Poland included: • a theatre performance staged in German and entitled Ich bin so allein, • a song about Astrid Lindgren written in German by the pupils under the supervision of their teacher, • a flute concert, • quiz on the contents of three books: Karlsson vom Dach, Die Bruder Lowenherz, and Ronja Raubertochter. The stay in Germany also featured sports, music and social activities by Polish and German children. They went on a trip to Lubben together, where they visited a museum and filled out their work charts, sailed by boats down the Spreewald channels and tributaries of the River Spree, had picnic on an islet, and played in Wasserspielplatz and Sound Garden (Klanggarten).
