Mizzou Traditions What is the J-School? The School of Journalism was founded Sept. 1, 1908, by Walter Williams. It was the first journalism school in the world. What are the Columns? The six Ionic Columns that stand in the center of Francis Quadrangle are all that remain of the old Academic Hall that was destroyed by fire on Jan. 9, 1892. They remain to honor the many generations of students and faculty who have passed in their shadow. The Quadrangle and its Columns are fond symbols of MU and the witness to many events annually. Many myths surround the Columns, including the legend that the architect placed two further apart for his own amusement. Ivy used to grow on five of the six Columns. It is believed that during the Civil War, two soldiers fought over the love of a woman; one was shot at the base of that Column, therefore no ivy would ever grow on it.

Why is the Tiger the mascot? Truman, Mizzou’s most loved mascot, is named after President Harry S. Truman, a Missouri native. The Tiger was chosen as the official mascot around 1890, and is derived from the nickname of a group of brave Columbians who defended the town and the University from possible attacks by guerrilla bands during the Civil War. The reputation of the intrepid “Tigers” traveled abroad, and no attacks were made. Why did Homecoming begin? This tradition got its start in 1911 by Chester Brewer, Director of Athletics. That year the annual Missouri-Kansas game was to be played on a college campus for the first time. To cheer the Tigers on, Brewer issued a plea to all Mizzou alumni to “come home” for the big game. They did, with more than 9,000 packing Rollins Field. Missouri was the first school to bring football and “coming home” together, hence the tradition of Homecoming was born. In 1927, the “M” at Faurot Field was built in about an hour as a freshman stunt the night before the home game.

The MKT Trail The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Trail, better known as the MKT Trail, is a small part of the Katy Trail, located between Providence Boulevard and Scott Boulevard.

Entrances to the trail are located at the corner of Providence Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, off Stadium Boulevard, and off Forum Boulevard.

The MKT Trail came about in 1986 in a railsto-trails conversion after the MKT Railroad stopped running. Many of Columbia’s residents use the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail to get to and from work as well as for exercise. Along this trail are many stretching and exercise stations that allow visitors to add variety into their hike or ride. The trail measures almost nine miles and winds through wooded areas as well as welcoming neighborhoods.

Parking lots are located at the Stadium Boulevard and Forum Boulevard entrances. The MKT Trail joins up with the Katy Trail just west of McBaine.
