01 Professional Freelance Project

ORBITAL KITCHEN

The Orbital Kitchen is located on fifth ave in the heart of Greenwich village in New York city. It was a traditional food venue before the pandemic. It has since adapted to the novel changes and uncertainties brought about by Covid-19 by transforming into a series of virtual restaurants that focus on online orders.

It is designed as a hub for pick-up and delivery services. Given the very small footprint, the challenge is to strategically fit in all the required programs, facilitate staff’s workflow and offer a dynamic waiting area for the customers and delivery people.

The project seeks to explore the excitement between emerging technologies and the speed of contemporary life. It brings in simple geometries, with contrasts of scales and play with materials defining the forms and functions of the space.

02 Professional Freelance Project

KOYA OMAKASE

Koya Omakase is located at the heart of East village in New York city. Opened as a new Japanese-style dining space, Koya, dedicates to sushi,tempura and teppan-yaki cuisine.

The project started with site visits and demolition of the previous ice-cream shop.

Given the small footprint about 570 square feet , the challenge is to strategically fit in all the required programs, offer a discreet Japanese dining experience for the customers and facilitate staff’s workflow.

The design carried the theme of texture and detail that’s valued by Japanese culture. Inspired by the authentic Japanese aesthetic of wood, the ceiling is made of an innovative design of a wooden structure. Marble surface, fluted glasses and textured slate wall tiles were employed though the interior, resulting in a modern Omakase space where a sense of genuine quality hangs in the air.

03 Professional Freelance Project

SOM BO

Located at the heart of Chelsea in New York City, Som Bo is the destination for modern, simple and healthy Asian-inspired food. Encountering inefficient circulations and shortage of indoor seatings, the owner Russell was seeking for a major renovation in the summer of 2019.

The renovation for Som Bo focused on changing previous circulations, rearranging the space and selecting materials and finishings that works within client’s budget. The design carried the theme of simplicity and serenity that’s valued by Som Bo. Consistent color palette applied on the wall and ceiling, natural wood finishes and concrete textured flooring, together create a powerful image of a modern restaurant concept.

PROGRAM : The main dining area accommodates eighteen people at the same time. The circulation is clear and smooth with a ordering line parallel to the food bar.

DESIGN: Forms follow functions, the space is crafted in a gentle manner with no harsh edges. The materials and furniture selections have to work with client’s requirements expressing an organic look with concrete and wood.

PROGRAM : Originally a multi-level bench, the space is now changed into comfoprtable banquette seating which accomendates eight people at the same time.

DESIGN: Forms follow functions in this space. The accent wall is covered with a customized mural wallpaper; the banquette seating is upholstered with soft leather fabrics which is easy to clean.

FOLLOW-UP PROJECT PICK-UP/RECYCLING STAND

The customized fixture was commissioned to accommodate Som Bo’s rapidly growing in deliveries and pick-up orders. The owners wants a piece to function it all; food waste, recycling and shelving for online orders.

The design approach is to create a piece that is highly efficient for daily uses, and fit in Som Bo’s consistent visual identity.

ECHO BOUTIQUE HOTEL

To correspond with Montreal people’s strong belief in sustainable living, Echo Hotel is dedicated to celebrate healthy diet. The hotel features two farm based restaurant concepts served by the in-building farm grown vegetations and meat, a culinary hub providing cooking and nutrition classes and many other amazing utilities.

This project seeks to find balance between strict minimalism and hospitality. The design approaches the interior as a sculptural entity, with curved geometries defining the forms and functions of the space. Evenly textured finishes applied on the walls, floor, and ceiling, create an optical illusion where surfaces seamlessly fade in each other. It’s a place celebrate simplicity and serenity in sustainable living and healthy diet.

PROGRAM: located at the ground floor, hotel lobby offers guest check-in and waiting space.

DESIGN: to connect with the nature, the sculptural indoor garden features water fountains, tropical shrubbery and a number of seatings around it. The material selection focuses on simplicity and rich texture of material itself. The green comes in and complements the palette.

Restaurant PROGRAM: located right next to the lobby, this farm-based restaurant serves lunch and fine dining at night. It welcomes everyone, not only hotel visitors.

DESIGN: the space uses a neutral color palette emphasizing the true beauty of form itself. The fabric of dining chairs and banquet seatings are the accents here cheering up the whole space.

Hydroponic Garden/Farm System The self-watering, self-fertilizing Garden system could grow everything from leafy greens like kale and lettuce varieties to different herbs, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplant. With low maintenance requirements, room service is required to maintain the garden on a daily basis while the garden specialists come in for seasonal check ups.

Juice bar The focus point of every guest room creating a strong connection with the Echo’s ethos of the healthy diet and lifestyle. Fresh fruits, wheat grass will be provided on a daily basis. Guests are encouraged to use leafy greens and other ingredients grows in the garden/farm system.

RAD POWER BIKE FLAGSHIP

Rad Power Bike is a electric bike manufacturer founded by Mike Radenbaugh in 2015 as a ‘direct to consumer business’. Rad’s mission is to offer an unrivaled customer experience with radical electric bikes that are built for everything and priced for everyone. This store will become Rad Power Bike’s very first physical store. The challenge is to help Rad Power Bike come up with a series of innovative programs that speak to Rad’s mission and are highly efficient in the urban location.

Inspired by Rad’s mission of connecting the past and the future, the design concept develops from urbanism and technology. The tech-heavy inspiration lends itself to futuristic design details, including a robotic arm system, mostly-glass exterior, wraparound screens displaying atmospheric videos on loop and a LED illuminated ceiling.

It will take over the existing Drexel Armory building on 32nd and Lancaster Avenue. With Drexel Armory’s prime location conveniently accessible via public transportation, Go Fly Zone will bring a fresh and exciting vibe to this historic building, to university city neighborhood and to Philadelphia.

Inspired by the nature, the concept is to create an interior carved by the wind.

DESIGN: the customized LED lighting accentuates the sculptural form. Materials are mainly in neutral tones highlighted with stainless steel finishes. The customized kiosks and information desk carries consistent organic forms.
