Pancake bell 1700s
This bell is from St Thomas’s Church, which was destroyed in the Civil War. It was rung at midday to signal a half day holiday. A replica pancake bell is still rung each year on the corner of North Street, before the annual pancake races. Traditions mark our lives at regular intervals and can bring communities together. This bell is a simple object but it connects us to the past and continues to have meaning today. Christine, Learning Manager.
