YES Served More Youth than Ever Before in 2018

F

or decades, homeless and near-homeless youth lived in society’s shadows – unnoticed and largely ignored. Part of that was due to limited services available to help and support them – but it was also because they chose to lay low and out of the view of society. But that stigma is changing every day – and Youth Emergency Services (YES) is playing a life-changing and life-saving role in that evolution. In 2017-2018, YES served nearly 4,000 young people through our various programs – a 25 percent increase from the previous year. This is a testament to our efforts to change the internal and external perceptions of homelessness as we work to end it. We’re accomplishing this, in part, by providing more prevention services – funding to help pay rent and utilities to keep young people in their homes. We also help them become more self-sufficient through our job readiness program that not only helps connect young people with employment but

also helps them build the skills to keep and excel in those jobs. While we’re offering additional services, more and more youth are also finding out about us – and taking a step out of the shadows to take control of their lives and establish bright futures. Youth homelessness is still here and will be for the foreseeable future. But because of your compassion and support, YES is able to make a measurable impact – as reflected by the tremendous numbers and information in this Impact Report. Together, we are working to end youth homelessness and near-homelessness while making our community stronger and better every day. With gratitude,

YES Changes Lives

“I have always been aware that there are children who are living in poverty and even homeless, but it wasn’t until coming to YES that I was able to see the reality of what they face. I love supporting YES because I believe I have the best of both worlds — working with the people who make our mission possible, and being able to see the smiles on the faces of the youth we serve made possible by our supporters’ generosity.” — Maren Larsen Mentor and Volunteer Coordinator

Bryan Peterson Board President

Our Mission:

To serve homeless and near-homeless youth by providing critically-needed resources which empower them to become self-sufficient.

YES Impacts Lives!

Youth Emergency Services (YES) was founded in 1974 by a group of community volunteers who noticed homeless youth hanging around in Omaha's Old Market district. At first, YES was led strictly by volunteers — they invited youth in crisis to stay in their homes. Now, YES has the staff to meet the needs of youth.

Programs and Services

No matter the situation, Youth Emergency Services offers a range of programs and services. We believe all youth, no matter where they come from or who they are, should feel safe and welcome. Throughout our programs, YES offers specialized case management services, the opportunity for youth to be paired with a community mentor and weekly support groups to help youth build life skills, make connections and strengthen relationships.

Street Outreach

Started in 1999, the Street Outreach Progam engages homeless and street-dependent youth, ages 12 to 21. Youth are welcome at this safe place to eat a meal, take a hot shower, do laundry, meet with health care professionals and get help obtaining a license or identification.

Emergency Shelter

YES Invests in Youth

“I support YES because it provides a continuum of care to the most vulnerable members of our community. YES doesn’t just protect kids in the moment, it invests in their future success and ability to be independent, productive adults.” — Kellie Harry YES Board Member

The YES Emergency Shelter has been serving youth in crisis for more than 40 years and is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with youth care workers who provide individualized support for homeless youth ages 16-20 to get them back on track.

Transitional Living

In 2008, YES launched its Transitional Living Program (TLP) which provides long-term services to runaway and homeless youth, ages 16 to 21. TLP residents live in apartment-style homes for a maximum of 18 months and work closely with intensive case managers with the goal of gaining safe, secure housing.

Maternity Group Home

The Maternity Group Home provides services to runaway and homeless youth, ages 16 to 21, who are pregnant or parenting and may not be able to access services. Residents live in a family-style residence for a maximum of 18 months and work closely with case managers with the goal of becoming self-sufficient.

Mentoring

The Mentoring Program creates a special opportunity for youth to develop a positive, sustained relationship with a trustworthy and influential adult to help guide them on a path to success.

Human Trafficking

Working in conjunction with the Women’s Center for Advancement (WCA)’s Indigo program, YES strives every day to stop human trafficking in and around the Omaha Metro. Indigo is a resource for building awareness, educating the community and healing victims of human trafficking for young people ages 17-24.

FINANCIALS AT A GLANCE

YES Helped Kayla Achieve Her Dream

Four years ago, Kayla dropped out of her high school in Alabama and focused on raising her two young children. Desperately in need of support, she had no family willing to help her. She was on her own. Kayla decided it was time for a change and relocated to the Omaha area. Shortly after her move north, she entered YES’ Maternity Group Home and hit the ground running. YES was able to help her re-enroll in school at Blackburn Alternative. She is one of nearly 4,000 homeless or near-homeless youth helped each year by YES. She gained part-time employment at Subway and set up daycare and Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) services for her children. Kayla’s ultimate dream was to join the United States Air Force. After meeting with a recruiter, she worked diligently to take care of a previous legal citation from Alabama. She was determined not to let anything stop her from achieving her dream. She was asked to speak at her high school graduation in 2018 and inspired her fellow graduates with her story. In her speech, she said: “Some of us had it rougher than others, but we still make it.” Kayla graduated from Boot Camp in San Diego in January, and after several months apart, was reunited with her children shortly after to start the next phase of her life. Although each story is unique, many youth find a path to success and self-sufficiency. Thank you for your continued support to serve Kayla and all the young lives YES impacts every day by giving them hope.
