Sustainability Study Tour

MBA Sustainability Study Tour students at Viña Concha y Toro

MBA students working with the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative chose to visit Chile for their 2019 Sustainability Study Tour. The overarching goal of the tour was to explore how a country can sustainably use its natural resources to foster stable economic and political growth as well as social wellbeing. The two-week program allowed the students to understand why Chile presents itself as the pathway for green growth in Latin America, and how future leaders can take on the challenge of building future sustainable endeavors. Given Chile’s economic and socio-political importance, the group took advantage of the deep ties between MIT Sloan and Chile, in both the public and private sectors. Lee Ullmann and the MSLAO supported the tour by providing advice and contacts for all private company and government visits, and by working with the MIT Chile Club to set up a welcome event for participants.

Beautiful Patterns: Computational Thinking Workshop

John Williams with MIT students, volunteers, and high school students at the American Spaces

MIT Professor John Williams, along with three graduate students and two former undergraduates, spent one week in Chile to teach Beautiful Patterns, a computational thinking workshop, to 50 Santiago public high school students (25 males and 25 females). Students spent the week learning about methods that complement and combine mathematical and engineering thinking to make them better problem solvers. The program involves conceptualizing and representing problems, and thinking at multiple levels of abstraction. First developed by Abel Sanchez in Mexico, Beautiful Patterns was brought to Chile this year thanks to the US Ambassador to Chile and Professor Williams. Three local institutions were of great help for the workshop: Municipalidad de Santiago, the US Embassy in Chile American Spaces, and everis. The graduation ceremony was held at Santiago’s City Hall, and certificates were handed out by the Mayor of Santiago.
