ollaboratively Designing Opportunities 2022 - 2023 YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Friends,

We truly enjoyed seeing so many of you in-person this year, as we welcomed employers back to campus for recruiting, and connected with students, alumni, and recruiting partners at over 300 company events, networking events, and conferences

In a year dominated by disruption, we saw the MIT Sloan community come together to share their experiences, expertise, and opportunities. Alumni played a key role in our story this year. This fall, we welcomed a record 50 MIT Sloan Industry Advisors back into the MIT Sloan career community to support students seeking careers in emerging industries We also partnered closely with alumni seeking MIT Sloan talent, including posting over 125 alumni-sourced jobs. One of the highlights of the year was speaking with alumni as part of our inaugural Alumni Listening Tour, and gaining insights to further energize and connect our dynamic talent community.

In the 2022-2023 Year in Review, we reflect on the successful outcomes of the Class of 2022, and highlight the activities and partnerships that supported careers during the 2022-2023 academic year for the Classes of 2023 and 2024. Career success is a community achievement, and we thank the MIT Sloan faculty, alumni, employers, and students who support Sloanies in connecting their talents with opportunities to transform the world of business.

AI CAREER TOOLS: ONE SLOANIE’S EXPERIENCE

We recently connected with MIT Sloan EMBA ’23 Philip Gerity about his experience using AI tools to refine his value proposition/elevator pitch. Philip used ChatGPT to generate a rough draft of his elevator pitch, which he refined. He then used Loom to practice his pitch to perfection.

The most useful part about using AI technology as part of his career communication strategy:

“It’s a way to get started quickly. It may not be perfect, but it’s a good starting point that you can build from. I used ChatGPT to get going with initial ideas, have a conversation with the AI that generates some useful starting points; and then I took it from there, edited it down, and refined it to capture my insights and my voice.”

CDO’S AI CAREER TOOLS

AI tools help job seekers speed up and re-imagine job search communications We encourage students to use these tools in addition to CDO’s career advisors and coaches, to combine the speed and accessibility of AI feedback with personalized human insight. Below are two AI tools the CDO uses to support resume reviews, LinkedIn profile reviews, and interview feedback.

VMock Smart Resume is an AI-powered resume tool created through an analysis of thousands of top business school resumes. The tool catches typos and offers feedback on how well a resume demonstrates business competencies like communication, leadership, teamwork skills, and initiative.

VMock Aspire uses AI to optimize LinkedIn profiles and support creation of a consistent narrative between a candidate’s resume and LinkedIn profile, to ensure the LinkedIn profile aligns with the target career track.

Big Interview uses AI to help candidates practice their elevator pitch and interview skills.

Candidates can select a general or customized interview track, after which they can review and share their videos, and get AI feedback, which offers a score and custom action plan.

The tool offers feedback on eye contact, pace of speech, and use of filler words, power words, and pauses. Learn more

HOW SLOAN INDUSTRY ADVISORS SUPPORT THE JOB SEARCH

ONE SLOANIE’S EXPERIENCE

“As you are exploring potential companies, MIT Sloan Industry Advisors can help point you in the right direction.”

HEARD ON THE CDO LISTENING TOUR

“Marian Hodges, MBA ’91 was so easy to connect with, as she helped me think about how to position myself for COO roles, and how to talk about my unique value proposition.”

“Patrick Rivelli, SM ‘91 shared a new industry vertical that expanded my opportunities, company names, and practical advice I could move ahead with right away.”

This fall, CDO Assistant Dean, Susan Brennan and Alumni Engagement Strategist, Shauna LaFauci Barry reconnected with our alumni industry advisors and they shared this advice for job seekers this year:

“In an interview, focus on what you will bring that will be different.”

“What the hiring manager wants to know is, ‘WHAT is it that is unique about you?’”

“I encourage people to do selfreflection and to take the time to think about your likes and dislikes.”

CDO EXECUTIVE-IN-RESIDENCE: REVEALING NEW CAREER PATHWAYS

He has also delivered group workshops to help mid-career candidates think strategically about their career paths and options.

Vijay D’Silva (SM ’92) is the MIT Sloan CDO’s first-ever Executive in Residence He lends specialized knowledge on industry verticals and functions, as students seek to shape their programs and careers, or pursue entrepreneurship.
