An end of the year letter The more, the merrier. Happiness comes from the small things that we do for ourselves and others. The creativity of the weaver results in a more intricate and unique weave. So do our actions. They weave us into the person we are today. Be thankful for everything that you are capable of. Nothing comes for free. The year 2020 made us all realize how irrelevant and possessed these materialistic things are. Cherish those moments with family and friends, you never know what will happen in the forthcoming moment. An unexpected reality check occurred this year, creating chaos and disruptions in our lives. We stood together against the hurdles, managed to foresee good even when there was little hope. Save the Loom was an initiative taken by Mr. Ramesh Menon to uplift the handloom weavers and their society. Their recent initiative named ‘OLAM’ expects to create a new wave among the youngsters.

Arts, especially performing ones, goes a long way in shaping our aesthetic values, our lifestyles, and our overall well-being. Music is pivotal to most of the performing arts, and it’s no different to Kathakali, the most famous and world-renowned performing art of Kerala. Sri Nedumpalli Rammohan, the present-day virtuoso, and a consummate singer have already made his mark in this field. Born in a musical family, he had his early lessons from his father and has developed a unique style that sets him apart. This Palakkad-based Kathakali music pedagogue made his mark in the Kathakali music by his in-born, gifted talent, hard work, and the experience gained by performing along with yesteryears’ doyens and other present-day maestros.

Apart from being a maths teacher by profession, he has been active in this field as a singer for over three decades.

‘Performing arts especially interest us; Keralites’, says Rammohan. After learning basics from renowned Kathakali Bhagavathar (singer), Shri Narayanan Namboothiri, and being on stage with many great Kathakali Bhagavathars moulded him as a singer. “Kathakali is a wholesome art as one can enjoy story, music, theatre, percussion beats, make-up reminiscent of paintings in one performance”, says Rammohan. He talked about not only Kathakali but also other foremost art forms

such as Koodiyattam, Chakyarkoothu, Mohiniyattam, Thullal, Mela, Kuzhapattu (performance of wind instrument) shows how insightful he is as an artist.

‘Music is the key element that attracts any amateur to the performance’ says Rammohan based on his expertise in this bailiwick.

He is someone who believes both art and audience must go with the spirit of the time.

Though there are no significant shreds of evidence to support the origins of Kathakali music, Rammohan believes that Sopana Sangeetham (an Indian classical music form) played a significant role. Earlier, the singer rarely repeats the lines in the literature, but today, as it gives importance to the storyline through ‘abhinaya’, repetition occurs. Kalamandalam Neelakandan Nambeesan, Kalamandalam Unnikrishna Kurup, Kalamandalalm Shankaran Embranthiri were trailblazers who created an additional dimension to kathakali music in the past. Around 30 years back, Kalamandalam Neelakandan Nambeeshan was a pioneer of the Kathakali music concert with basic ragas and themes. It was Venkitakrishna Bhagavathar who diverted the old method of singing the same padam and his disciples followed it. Sankaran Embranthiri changed this way of execution by introducing fusions of instruments. “All of this expanded the course of Kathakali,” says Rammohan.

Kathakali performances were conducted throughout the night, but now it has been reduced to three to four hours, which is still impossible for a bhagavathar to perform alone.

A Kathakali performance requires a lead singer (called ponnani) with chengila and a supporting singer (called shingidi) with elathalam. The instruments they use (chengila and elathalam) help them retain the Thala in rendition, along with chenda and madhalam (percussion instruments). On-stage performance, the music controls the storytelling, performance of the actors, other percussion accompaniments. During this talk, he even

demonstrated a few padams to support the same.

As a bhagavathar, he always had the freedom to experiment in rendering the Padam or the literature. The only curtailment is that he has to finish it along with the ‘abhinaya’ of the performer. Rammohan, a pedagogue of fusion, brings a blend of Carnatic and Kathakali to the audience. Without depreciating the structure of-the-art form, he radically approaches the ragas and uses Carnatic music as a buff. The most frequently used ragas are the so-called Melakartharagas (Sankarabharanam, Kalyani, Panduvarali, May-

amalavagoula) among the forty other ragas being used. Bhagavathars take most of the ragas from Carnatic music, familiarity being the sole reason. But in the modern context, singers started experimenting and began incorporating Hindusthani ragas like Sindubhairavi. Rammohan renders his padams in indigenous ragas such as Paadi, Khandam.

Most of the singers have their way of singing, some by modulating voice, some by introducing new ragas, some stress on the pronunciation, some even experimented with a touch of light music. Rammohan is quite excited about comparison-based fusions wherein

he considers a similar theme from either a Carnatic form or Thiruvathirakali and Kathakali. His wife, Meera Rammohan, is a Carnatic vocalist, and the duo performs fusions in their shows together. He has already conducted 23-30 shows in about 15 countries. Once in France, he and his troop performed continuously for 16 hours show as per the people’s request. Simultaneously, they conduct workshops. There’s no wonder why this virtuoso received the Central Government’s Ustad Bismil Khan Yuva award in the year 2013.

This pedagogue has only one thing to say, “where there is art, nothing goes wrong. It soothes the mind, calms the atmosphere and helps us tide over the challenges of life, especially during the times of pandemic, like this”. For this, Shri Rammohan is an apt choice, and he wishes the future generation to pursue arts from the scratch and not for the sake of competitions.

he land of tales, myths, spices, and coconut, Kerala has always been a place of interest to many. Handlooms are one of the most important sectors after agriculture. The finish, the texture, the intrinsic beauty of fine craftsmen, subdued color tones are woven together by the hands of the weaver’s family.

Once only worn by the elite sect of the society has now become the face of the state.

The undertone ivory and golden color palette crawl through the wearer’s skin portraying an impactful look. The Kasavu saris on occasions are the butter to my bread or sipping chai on a rainy-day kind of investment.

Handlooms are a bequeathing establishment at the bequest of a weaver. The creative mind of the weaver entwines threads to exalted handloom weaves. Kerala handloom weaves is specialized in several centers. About 1.75

lakhs people are directly or indirectly engaged in this sector concentrating over the regions of Thiruvanthapuram, Kannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kollam, and Kasaragod districts. Balaramapuram (Thiruvanthapuram), Chendamangalam (Kochi/Ernakulam), and Kuthampully (Thrissur) are the prime handloom weaving centers in Kerala.

Though they appear analogous, each weaving unit has its signature characteristics. The tactic employed by Chendamangalam weavers are traditional and tends to draw in more sophisticated customers. They offer less importance to Kasavu patterns as compared to the products made in Balaramapuram. A small amount of Kasavu and a colored border with a pairing stripe is a typical statement of chendamangalam products. Another characteristic is that the texture appears heavier

and the textiles are woven on frame looms.

These sarees acquired the GI tags. Even before Chendamangalam became a panchayath in 1914, it was a part of the Kanayanur taluk of Kochi. The place is an ancient part of Muziriz, famous for the Kochi Biennale. The place was crammed with cultural diversity as Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and other immigrant communities lived together. The weaving patronage dates back to the time when it had been introduced by the Paliam family. Paliam Achans were the hereditary Prime Ministers to the Maharajas of Kochi.

The realm remains one of the prime weaving centers in Kerala.

The year 2020 had a severe impact on our lives yet we stayed together and fought. The identical story goes back to the year 2018 when Kerala underwent a substantial rav-

age. The two out of five handlooms weaver’s society at Paravur was completely damaged.

About 300 weavers in Chendamangalam weaving unit lost their jobs as all the looms, yarns, finished products were destroyed in the floods. When the mishap happened, the weavers were working towards the government initiative of providing handloom uniforms to the students. The project aimed to give a new life to handlooms and to protect the weaver’s society. Most of them were women aged 50 or above and were the only earning member of the family. In the aftermath of the ravage, Mr. Ramesh Menon started his enterprise named Save The Lgoalobjective wasn’t to reinvent the prevailing kasavu sarees but to restore the damaged weaving units. His ideologies are bigger and long term, to uplift the weavers through de 17

sign intervention, development, and proliferation, skill upgrade, technical upliftment likewise as suggesting reforms. This non-profit organization or community works towards reshaping the Indian Handloom Industry taking pride in what these artisans are contributing to Indian arts and crafts. They work towards reviving the industry and upscale the worth within the market. The organization conducted a visit to those places and observed and recorded the mandatory needs that must be addressed. They ensure that sufficient workflows to each weaver and thus they can be uplifted from the forced effect of nature. The campaign witnessed the support of famous Indian fashion designer, Anju Modi, Kerala based fashion designer Poornima Indrajith.

The handloom industry is one of the most promising sectors after agriculture. It generates creative products that are of great value in export and foreign exchange as well as create job opportunities in other sectors. Due to the surge of eco-conscious clothing and slow fashion, people tend to show interest

in Indian handloom products. The pandemic made a shift in the perspective and priorities changed. The ongoing pandemic was a hit on the face for most of the people all over the world. There is going to be a great demand for masks and people tend to have an especial interest in eco-friendly clothing. Save the Loom community worked with the Gandhi Smarak Seva Kendram to make and supply about 5000 masks per day. This ensures job and social security for those who were affected by the pandemic. The Khadi industry like any other community was severely affected by the Corona pandemic. This collaborative initiation ensures that both the weavers and the Khadi kendram workers are benefitted and can upscale their position in the market.

The authentic kasavu saris with a twist brought them to the limelight under this current scenario. Save the Loom’s initiative named Olam meaning ‘a new wave’ in Malayalam. The initiative aims to curate the saris with a contemporary twist for the youth audience. The delicate and intriguing kasavu details make it an apt choice for casual wear.19

kala mode This ethical, intriguing, and modern thinking design approach anticipates maximum versatility. The designs are authentic yet they only detached the foreknown ideology of associating kasavu saris with occasions. The limited-edition collection contains 11 designs.

The cotton saris are handwoven at Chendamangalam. The color palette chosen works well universally as it involves a varied mix of color combinations. The everyday saris have green, grey, blue, and coral colors. Stripes are

the main feature in the entire collection. Each of them shows an original and innovative design which when draped shows repetition distinctively. In the collection, two of them are dual-sided making them reversible saris. To fit into the everyday category, the kasavu karas or borders are reduced. The collection was launched to provide a platform for weavers and to preserve the handloom sector.

Preserving these techniques is necessary as most of the complex and intriguing weaves are known to a few. Creating a global platform for these can provide an opportunity for those interested in preserving the craft.

Weaving a tale for the kids Kerala handloom has caught the attention of people with its impeccable quality, intrinsic designs, and particular weave. Indian celebrities wearing handloom saris have made people fall in love with the fabric. The state government has asked the sector to produce handloom uniforms. The agenda behind it is that students will get to know more about our traditional weave and it can be protected at all costs. The government decided to launch free distribution of uniforms to children studying in classes one to seven. This encourages workflow to the weavers and ensures a fixed salary. Under this scheme, about 23 lakh meters of cloth will be distributed. The devastating flood resulted in the destruction of many finished products in the handloom industry including school uniforms.

But the initiative has helped in the welfare of the handloom sector. Both the students and the weavers are benefitted from this scheme as their miseries are alleviated to an extent.

The center has asked the other states to replicate Kerala’s handloom scheme.

The scheme helps the handloom sector to create a brand of its own thereby adding value to its product in the market. Such initiations tend to get recognized more often, giving the weavers a secure and satisfying

lifestyle. The sector first sends fabric samples to the schools to undergo mandatory testing procedures. Though the expense is quite a lot in the long run, the weaver’s society will have global recognition. In a world full of materialistic, artificial, and technological advancement taking over, legacies, heritage, and culture mean nothing. The threat in such a mentality needs to be addressed. Small awareness campaigns and social media viral tweets and hashtags could save the day.

Renowned fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has started a similar initiative. The designer collaborated with the Citta organization to create uniforms for the students of Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School in Jaisalmer.

He designed a three fourth sleeved uniform with buttons and pockets on both sides. He used Ajrakh textiles, natural dyes, and block printing techniques. He also believed that this project could transform the lives of those girls. Apart from giving uniforms, the initiative also aims for resourceful education to the girls, empowering them to live among those who are privileged. The ace designer, wellknown for his breathtaking intrinsic and traditional weaves, patterns, and rich colors has come forward to such humanitarian work.

Meet Razia Kunj, a successful jewelry designer selling her stories through wearable art.

Founder and designer of Razia Kunj Art and Facts, Razia Kunj is a Mumbai-based artisanal jewelry designer who graduated from Sophia College in applied arts.

Her designs are intriguing and expressional and all more at the junction of art and life. Through her designs, she creates a niche for jewelry design in India. She finds inspiration in the nooks and corners of India. She brings life to the forgotten pages of Indian folklore, dance, and other art forms, from the walls of temples in and around the country.

Each piece of jewelry is made up of several elements such as from Rudraksh beads to Swarovski crystals, cotton chords and treads, and many more.

What makes her wearable art apart is how it is all built from scratch, painted, and created by a few artisans. This ensures the upliftment of the artisan community, as well as art and craft, reach more audience. Her collections are named from Indian art and tale inspirations such as MOKSHA, TEMPLE, THEYYAM, JHAROKA, and many more.

Each piece of jewelry from her collection is unique and the artistic interpretation of it makes it more distinguishable. Her

collection lives through the women of India. Each art piece that is worn by the people gives it a whole new reach. One of her collections named THEYYAM, is inspired by the ritualistic performing art of North Kerala. The entire collection draws inspiration from Theyyam, an open theatrical performance of colorful masks, headgear, and flamboyant costumes with engaging music and dance steps. Each piece is an adornment of the colorful stories of the ritual that dates back to a long time ago. The patronage was bestowed upon the hands of Nambiars and Thiyyas communities.

Theyyam originated from Kaliyattam, one of the sanctioned festivals of Kerala. There are shreds of evidence that show that Velan community amongst the four tribes who perform theyyam (Malayar, Pana, Vannan, and Velan), developed the Theyyam art form overhead 1500 years. Due to such a long period of existence and corresponding development, there are 456 Theyyakkolams or theyyam performances. The artists perform by Thulam (Malayalam month), which is around October/November in the English calendar.

ments, the story behind the art form which was earlier restricted to the temples of Kannur and Kasaragod, now reach a new destination. A unique, chivalrous collection embellished with silver and gold finishes, strung together by glass beads portrays the idea of a new vision to the art- on a person of a woman. The collection includes handmade rings, earrings, brooches, and pins.

The collection consists of rings, stud earrings, brooches and pins, neckpieces that draws and portrays the exact intensifying emotions of the performance.

Anyone who has watched the performance live or not could relate to it. ‘Art that you can wear’ is what Razia calls her designs.

n a time like this, where people are forced to be inside their safe place, theatres closed, flourishing OTT platforms, arts sold, told and lived through online, fashion shows held virtually, 2020 has been a different set of packages. This year taught us to be strong, enjoy one’s own company, and to live unexpectedly for you never know what’s kept hidden for you.

Ever since the lockdown, something or the other reminds us of the times we spent with family or friends. The year 2020 has been a memory grade up with notifications popping now and then. Back when I was a child, I heard stories from my grandmother and grandfather talking about how they used to walk through the fields to reach the theatre stage.

Every month some or the other performing arts such as Kathakali, Chakyarkoothu, or Chavittunadakam happens. People enthusi-

astically shut down their shops and houses, and together they go for a voyage with a mat in hand to the performing stage. Since most of the performing art occurs at night, they used to bring along a mat. This reminds of Jacquemus’s spring-summer 2021 collection show that happened at a gentle, breezy wheat field near Us (pronounced as oose) in the French Vexin Regional National Park. Art and fashion share a symbiotic relationship among themselves as well as with the group of acolytes wherein they incite and compete.

Designers communicate a collection’s story through fashion shows with the proper set, ambient lights, engaging music that waxes with time. The air-filled with an aura of possibly iconic moments.

All the runways are indeed performing art as it involves portraying stories through a combination of music, stage, and impeccable col33

lections as well. The show was a masterstroke as it involved many disputed differences pervaded in the fashion industry. It was a tribute to love and celebration as people are cocooning at home due to lockdown. The show orchestrated by Alexandar Ekman was small and soothing to both eyes and ears in terms of both collection and guests. The models paved their path through the field on a dramatic wooden plank runway that ran 600 m long. Gracefully walked down the pathway evoking the romantic side the brand portrays.

His collection draws a clean typical Southern French nonchalance. The show begins with a long open back dress paired with asymmetrical coiled earrings and embroidered platform sandals. Asymmetrical gold earrings, cut out Chiquito necklace, leather accessories like the Chiquito handbag juxtaposed with the looks. Other showstoppers were the draped skirt, a polo dress, a few white dresses, with beading and tassels. His collection was true to the core as they were the embodiment of fresh beginnings which collectively arouse our romantic side. The beaded golden skirt reminded me of the shine the falling sun rays have on the wheat granules. Unpredictability prevailed during the show as the collection included heavy puff-sleeved blouses, pull overcoats, and crop tops. The men’s wear showed a leaf print on cargo trousers and shirts. Suits with knife and fork tassels stole the show along with the cut-out heart shirts.

The actor-singer is well-known for her fashion sense, especially her street styles. Her sense of styling has made her stand apart from the crowd. Be it any occasion her wardrobe is something to look into to find inspiration in the closet. One of her latest looks featuring captured the attention of the audience. The OOTD offered a perfect winter-Christmas outfit inspiration. Shearling coats were one of the most seen runway trends of 2020.

Selena wore a red jumpsuit with a coat from Micheal Kors. Her lime green face mask contrasted with the cinched red

outfit. She styled herself with a double-breasted teddy coat and wore a pair of brown rain boots with lug soles. She wore a grey ankle length socks under the boots. COVID ART

Government and other officials have been taking and promoting numerous initiatives to create awareness among the people about covid-19 pandemic. Apart from the duty officials, various artists, influencers, comedians have been using their art as a canvas or social media platforms to grab the attention of people across the world. People were worried and restless as they didn’t know what protocols to be followed, how must one protect oneself and others at the same time. Hence came various artists and influencers to help the covid warriors to deliver the propaganda to everyone.

A government aided institution named Margi, joined the effort played by medical institutions in overcoming the pandemic. The institute is dedicated to the promotion and welfare of classical art forms mainly Kathakali and Koodiyattam. They performed a six-minute Kathakali performance written and choreographed by Margi Viajayakumar.

The performance had the actual feel of a live performance. Costumes, choreography, percussion instruments, padam everything combined to give the feel of performance. The only thing that was different is the storyline.

The lyrics of the padam was in accordance to

the storyline. As the demon (corona) of the story enters our life, it causes disruptions and destructions to humanity. The common man prays to God to remove corona from earth. The demon dressed in black in the character of Kali (one of the characters in the strory Nalacharitram) portrays coronavirus. The third character is the Rakshakan, the one who saves. In this scenario, Rakshakan symbolises health workers, bankers, police and other essential service workers who fight day and night to eradicate the virus from our society.

The verse sung in padam tone was actually worked on in order to be translated into the Kathakali padam language. The performance was a good visual treat with a strong message sent across. The way they came up with a marvellous performance in such a short time weighs its great success.
