NATURE INTERPRETATION CENTRE SITE: The site (8.76 ha) is located at Barkul Village, 97 km from Bhubaneswar. The exis ng water park and OTDC Panthanivas is close to the proposed site. The site is surrounded by the village on the north and agricultural land on the south. There is a green patch created on the east, followed by the Chilika lake.

REQUIREMENTS: The Chilika Development Authority has come up with a proposal to construct a nature interpreta on center dedicated to the Chilika Lake to increase awareness about this natural heritage. The facility is expected to cater to, on an average, 500 visitors daily, during peak season.

Basic spa al requirements would include recep on, wai ng areas, wild life observa on and dolphin watching decks, facili es for guided tours, auditoriums, library, galleries, exhibi on halls, workshop areas, retail (book shops, bou ques), food courts, toilets, parking areas, and other necessary services.

Sunken Gardens: The sunken gardens, placed intermediately with the built-up, keep a connec on between the nature and the built environment.

Segregated Zoning: The building is divided into public, semi-public and private parts. The cket counters, restaurants are in the public zone. The exhibi on gallery, library, cafeteria and audio-visual room are in the semi-public part. The offices, mee ng rooms, research laboratory are in the private part of the building.

The concept was to incorporate the built environment with the natural environment, so that both have a harmonic existence. Thus, there is a use of open space within the built space.

There are sunken gardens within and around the building with sit-outs, so as to make the users feel as a part of the nature. A viewing gallery facing the Chilika lake has been provided, atop a water body, to create a connec on with the lake.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS: Materials: The layering of contras ng materials is a conscious a empt to showcase the history of the city. Exposed brick reflects the earthy texture of the historic forts, while the use of glass and high density fibre represents the technological advancement of the present day scenario.

Ancillary Services: Temporary residen al facility for the performers and guests, a restaurant and parking facili es form the major support services. Mechanical cooling and ven la on was the major building service considera on. The layering of the exterior with shades helps in cooling the structure, thus decreasing the load on the HVAC.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE SITE: The site is of 13.5 acres, located at Praga Maidan, New Delhi. It is in the vicinity of the Purana Qilla, Dhyan Chand Stadium, Red Fort, and Supreme Court.

REQUIREMENTS: The requirement of the project was to design three auditoriums, for dance, drama, and music, which can operate simultaneously. There had to be a guest house for the performers and proper parking facili es on site.

CONCEPT: The design morphology is derived from the wheel and pinion. The central plaza forms the primary circula on node, analogous to the pinion, and the various audience flows connect to the auditoriums in the manner of diverging spokes.

The site has been divided by a water stream from the centre, using the division, the southern part of the site is for the Hospital as it is near the main road and access to the emergency will be nearer.

The entrance is a double height space, to give a feeling of awe. The space is of double height, to increase the volume to make the patients feel relieved and spacious.

The south facade of the hospital is treated with louvers, to avoid the direct sunlight and heat gain from the Sun.

The northern part of the site is for the Medical College, as it is near the residential zone and needs a silent zone.

The Medical College has three buildings. Two buildings house the non-clinical departments of the medical college and the other houses the nursing department.

The parking facility for the patients is near the entrance of the hospital and for the Doctors it is in the O.P.D. basement.

The Emergency block is on the western part of the Hospital, with a separate entrance and parking for the Ambulances.

The Operation Theatres are placed above the Emergency block, and is connected vertically with a lift. Thus, in case of any major emergency issues the patient can be moved to the Operation block within a short period.

REDESIGNING AMBAGAN MARKET fig. 1

SITE: The redesigning of the Ambagan Market of Rourkela was intended to study, find and interpret the problems of the largest market of the Rourkela Township. With a total of more than 900 shops out of which 192 were housed and the others came with the gradual organic growth over me. The market being centrally located, faced many issues and it needed proper interpreta on.

The lack of proper shading and encroachment of the corridor was the main problem.

Provision of proper (fig. 1) shading elements provided shading as well as corridor width increased.

REQUIREMENT: The site study along brought into the knowledge about the various issues like over-crowding, inadequate street lights, dilapidated structures, need of protec on from rain and sun, need of demarcated parking, permanent shops for the temporary shops and temporary shades for the vegetable vendors. A por on of the market also required proper planning, by replacement of the old unorganized shops with organised and permanent shops.

fig. 3 The road is used as temporary vending zone during the night, and there is encroachment of the shops on the both side of the streets.

Shades designed (fig.2) for the vendors and the path in-front of the shops (fig. 3) provided with shades and barricade to restrict the encroachment.

A new module of shop (fig. 5) was designed with the same area required for each shop.

SITE: The site is of 24,000 m² at Rajarhat, Kolkata. To the North-East of the site, there is a small water body, while a waste water canal runs parallel to the western boundary. The major access road is to the South.

REQUIREMENTS: The school was to be designed for class I to XII, catering to 1,200 students at a me. There has to be provisions for an auditorium, a swimming pool, a canteen, and a library, along with necessary play areas.

CONCEPT: The buildings are segregated and divided as per public and private zones. The auditorium and the playground that generate noise are kept away from the educa on block. The form of main building is generated from a hexagon, resul ng in a courtyard at the centre, which helps in ven la on of the educa on block. The geometric rigidity is broken by dissec on and displacement of the form, while maintaining the spa al enclosure. The East and West facade of the building has cavity walls to reduce solar heat gain.
