SARC 261 explored the ideas of sketching and representationof the architectural world through the lense of the illustrator through analogue forms of expressionsketching, painting, smudging. From there these forms are taken through to digital media to explore how these ideas and emotions can be reimagined to interrogate a particular idea

The idea being explored in this project looks at how figures move through space, how do we move through different states of being and how our bodys are impacted by the movement of other elements through time

Project one explored the complex idea of visualising a threshold that did not physically exist. This interested me as my explorations continued to delve into how people and animals move through space and breal thresholds. For example, walking through wind and taking flight. This idea evloved into a mutlitude of graphic elements of which gave a solid grounding for further exploration in assignment two.

Areas that interested me were the transformation of movements and thresholds that we experience throughout. In these images it was the idea of movement and transformation that was prominent. Something that I found very effective was the changes in mediums and changes in perspective, i.e: the plan and section were very succesful in conveying the concept of different thresholds over the same space.

Project Two

The exploration process initially was heading toward a more physical approach, in which the idea of breaking thresholds and materials was going to be the main driver. Upon New Zealand going into lockdown this direction swiftly changed to a digital framework. Grasshopper allowed me to explore the digital possibilities through parametric modeling however I was still in search of simulatig that impact and collision between objects and finding the breaking points in time

36
37

With a grasp for parametric modelling I wanted to explore further the relationship between the ideas of time, movement and collision. I needed a way to simulate this with the ability to warp time to exagerate the impact and the after effects of the collision. The simulations were constructed in Blender

These collisions created fascinating forms that seemed to illustrate the ability to pause movement and explore the relationship between time and motion, something that was explored in the first project with the movement of people and of birds through space and trying to portray through a layering of images.

From these experiments the exploration turned towards how this motion and geometry could be interpreted to make a pavilion. Rotating the image to explore the horizontal plane introduced the feeling of time - but how then, could someone experience this motion and destruction? How could you walk through this form? How could you interact with it? How could you feel the time moving past?

The exploration then moved to transfer what was interesting from the models to a habitable space exploraion was done in a quick expresseive manner, aiming at discovering a linear form and how that could introduce movement within the pavilion. The long horizontal line is reminiscent of a timeline along which this collision appears and similarly disapears.

Project 2 Conclusion

How can we generate an emotive experience that forces us to stop and contemplate time, movement, and destruction. My first exploration was through thresholds; how can we pause and reflect on the thresholds we break everyday, like a bird taking off, or a person moving through the wind? However, what I truly found fascinating in the second exploration was not what invisible thresholds can be visuilised but what actually represents this metaphor in our physical reality? How does a ball fall through glass? What impact does this have? How can this be shown through architecture?

My process explored these questions and more in the pursuit for a new pavilion - something that was different from what has been done before. The exploration of simulations and then further exploration thruogh sketching generated numerous shapes and refined into an architecture that represents the metaphor of the impact that time has on our personal thresholds.

Project 3

The inital expeimentation in project three explored the 3d printing of the shell, from there with the model being succesful different scales and forms were explored to find a form that looked elegant and reflective of the drawings and exploration

71

Tinfoil was used to create the reflective panels on the interior of the shell, playing with the light and dynamics of the space making for some areas to feel open and others to feel enlcosed - generating thresholds of different experiences

A fine balance between stability and refinement in the structure was a key to the model making, the idea was to have it look as though it should not be standing up - to have it appear to be floating so that it could reflect the concept of two objects colliding in space

The bridge was another important element showing the horizontal line exagerating the idea of a collison along a timeline that has been paused allowing people to reflect in a way that hasnt been explored before

The final pavilion consists of three sections that all flow over each other to create depth and contrast with the middle sturcture being reflective and the inner most structure having weaved reflective panels generating intersting light bounces and complex shadows as one walks through the pavilion

The model is positioned on a plinth that has been warped to reflect the impact a collison would have - creating a crater of sorts that has been effected by this collision of elements

The final model explored a concept in which was not the original intention at the start of this paper, The exploration of movement and time and seeing the seagulls go from stationary to flying inspired a discovery of movement and form and materiality.

This concept generated a unique idea of collisions and time, exploring how this could be further pushed to create some form of reflective pavilion that inspired and allowed for people to contemplate the importance of the lesser senses, to take time and breathe in their surroundings and allow the natural elements to speak
