Elana Natker, MS, RD Chair If you’ve been reading your monthly NE in a Nutshell e-newsletters, you’ve heard by now that my family and I have relocated halfway around the world. My husband and I joke that the time was ripe for a midlife crisis, but the truth is that both of us were feeling a bit stifled. I know I was feeling stress about home and the kids: Why won’t the kids get off their iphones? Are they challenged enough at school? Why aren’t they into sports? In my own life I was stressed that I wasn’t cutting-edge enough as a nutrition entrepreneur. And, gosh, am I just a fraud as the leader of NE DPG?! Just thinking about these things raised my stress levels. So when my husband came home to say he might be offered the new overseas job he was hoping for, I was both excited and nervous. Excited about living abroad but nervous that I’d become totally irrelevant in my work life. As I learned from talking with other professionals, including dietitians, who have lived overseas, the one thing I could almost certainly look forward to is a slower pace of life. While Oman isn’t a Third-World country and in fact is an emerging economy, simple pleasures that we may take for granted in the U.S. are not a guarantee in my new home. You know, things like fast internet access or that the local grocery store will have coffee filters in stock.

In the first week of moving here I had no cell phone service, which meant no flipping through Instagram and Facebook while I waited for my Starbucks coffee (like I said - no coffee filters yet!) and waiting until I got home to our WiFi to check emails, which was fruitless anyway since my emails didn’t start buzzing until about 5 p.m. local time when the business day is about to begin on the East Coast. Driving around with my husband (since I also didn’t have a car yet), I looked at the scenery, trying to memorize the surroundings since even when I did get cell service, Google Maps is a joke around here, so I’m told. I’m not saying everyone needs to travel overseas to do a little digital detox, but there are some important lessons I’ve learned so far.

1. P ut the phone down. It’s OK not to

be immediately available all the time.

2. Create office hours, and stick to

them. My clients and coworkers know that they can call me directly between 5-9 p.m. my time, which is anywhere from eight to 12 hours earlier for them, depending on their time zone and the time of year. They also know that I’ll be able to devote some solid work hours during my morning hours while they are fast asleep. Those evening hours for me/morning hours for them are reliable.

3. When you’re at work, focus on being

at work; and when you’re not at work, unplug. You do no favors to anyone if you’re trying to juggle a work call while volunteering at the kids’ school.

If you need to be forced to digitally detox, come visit me in Oman. Happy to help you out!
