Mackinac Island Community Foundation continues to support our youth and prepare them for lifelong success. In addition to awarding various scholarships to Mackinac Island Public School students who achieve academic excellence, MICF invites students to participate directly in the grantmaking process through the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).
To guide their strategic grantmaking, YAC conducts a Youth Community Needs Assessment survey periodically to determine various youth-oriented needs in the community. Wherever they go after leaving Mackinac Island, YACers will know they have the power to make a positive difference in their community.
In 2024, YAC evaluated grant submissions and made recommendations to programs making a difference in the lives of Island youth. Organizations like the City of Mackinac Island Recreation Department, Harbor Springs Festival of the Book, and Mackinac Horsemen’s Association were the recipients of Youth Fund grants in 2024. One impactful program is Harbor Springs Festival of the Book’s Authors and Books in Schools program, conducted at MIPS. Students learn from published writers about creativity, storytelling, illustration, and more during the visit, and get to go home with their own copy of the visiting author’s book.

Our Community Funds are building a better Mackinac Island.
Dear Friends,
In 2023 our Community Foundation conducted a study to explore the “wants and needs” of the Mackinac Island community. The results revealed four areas of focus: Culture, Wellbeing, Capacity Building, and Vibrant Island Life. Through your generous contributions to our unrestricted funds over the years, we have been able to move the needle in these areas, but the study revealed that we need to move the needle further.
Mackinac Island’s non-profit organizations work all year to create a better life for residents and visitors. Grants made from unrestricted funds at MICF are what empower these groups to make a lasting impact. Their reach can be seen all across the Island from the Youth Dance Program sponsored by the Mackinac Island Recreation Department, Meals on Snowmobiles at Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church to large capital projects like the city’s Forest Way Townhomes. However, the study concluded that the community needs are exceeding our capacity to give, thus making it a challenge for these non-profits to fulfill their missions. So, in 2024, we started working on ways to address these growing needs.
As always, we thank you for your support and look forward to our collective efforts to make our community the best it can be!
