So, what does it take for us to run Gaslight Group Properties and Vacation Properties of Northern Michigan? One word sums it up. Commitment. Commitment to our clients is first and foremost; without that, there is no GGP or VPNM. But the job takes more than that, first, we have personal standards that we hold ourselves to, both as a company and as the collective of 24 individuals who make up our two boutique firms with offices in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Mackinac Island. Having done this for as long as we have, we know who we want to be and who we don't want to be, and beyond our commitment to you, the Seller, the Buyer, the STR owner, or the STR tenant, we know we have to do more.

Morel Mushroom Hunting

The sun has barely risen, but I know today is a good day. It is finally time to start my quest for the elusive morel mushroom. This hunt started as a child for me. I vividly recall my grandfather would come home with wonder bread bags filled with the mushrooms. He always said that he picked them, but as an adult, I am certain that he did not. But I can assure you that my grandma battered them and fried them up for us. Along with some green tomatoes that my grandpa grew in his back yard garden.
We started hunting as young kids in the back woods of my grandparents cottage. I would now call it cheap labor, as we loved to spend our days as kids in the back woods. My grandma would make my brother and sister and me a picnic lunch in our army style lunch box with a plastic canteen. We were never so cool. And out we would go!
As I grew older, the hunt continued. Every year I am out there hoping and hunting. Some years are amazing, others, not so much. I remember the year I was pregnant with my youngest, we found 18 pounds in the back woods of our home on Walloon Lake. Unfortunately, the smell of them did not sit well with my current situation. We had black garbage bags full. I dried most of them, it was amazing, and never happened again. And believe me, I look every year.
Since then, I typically find enough for a nice steak dinner, sometimes. But!! I will always be in the hunt. Once you taste these mushrooms, Spring takes on a whole new meaning. As the winter days wind up, I am looking for a great site. Sometimes it is a lucky spot, and other times it is a lovely walk in the woods.

Howl at the Moon is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite event in all of northern Michigan. Hosted by Little Traverse Bay Humane Society at Walstrom Marine in Harbor Springs, it’s so much more than just a summer fundraiser—it’s a heartfelt celebration of second chances, community spirit, and the incredible work being done every day to care for animals in need. The evening is packed with amazing food from some of the area’s best chefs, exciting live and silent auctions filled with unique experiences and treasures, and, of course, the highlight for many of us: the adoptable animals who steal the show and remind us exactly why we’re there.
One of my favorite parts of the night is hearing the success stories—pets who were once abandoned or neglected, now thriving in loving homes thanks to the care and support of LTBHS. These stories bring the mission to life and show just how much of an impact this event truly has.
But the work is never done. LTBHS is always in need of support—whether it’s funding for medical treatments, supplies for daily care, or resources to help even more animals find homes. Howl at the Moon helps meet those needs, and every dollar raised makes a real difference.
Being part of this event is not only fun and uplifting—it’s also a meaningful way to give back and help create more happy endings for animals in need. I look forward to it all year long, and I truly believe it’s one of the most special nights in northern Michigan.

As a teenager in Flint, Michigan, the birthplace of General Motors, in the 1970s, I couldn’t help but develop a taste for muscle cars. Flint was full of them: Chevelle, Camero, Corvette, Mustang, Barracuda, Charger, loud, powerful and fast. Moving to Harbor Springs in 1980 I grew to appreciate imports too: Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW regularly lined the streets. Summertime in Harbor Springs guarantees you will see the latest models from most brands. So, it is no surprise that the Harbor Springs Car show is one of my favorite events of the summer. The Harbor Springs Car show is special in the sense that anyone can bring their car to it, no matter what it is. No entry fee is charged, and no awards are given out. Each participant is given a plaque for that year’s show. The variety of cars extends from rat rods to one-off custom builds, extremely valuable collectables to race cars. You never know who is going to show up and what they are going to bring.
The show started by accident. In 2007, the Porsche 356 Club decided to hold an event at Boyne Highlands. They asked a local member, Dave Hinz, to arrange a time trial hill climb. The drivers’ meeting for the hill climb was held at Zorn Park at 5 pm the night before. When 84 Porsche 356s rolled through Harbor Springs, people noticed and showed up to check them out. In the weeks following, Dave was asked many times when the next show was. The following year, 2008, Dave sent an email to several car enthusiast friends suggesting that they meet at Zorn Park and show their cars; 85 showed up. It’s been going on ever since. The Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce office has a display of Harbor Springs Car Show posters dating back to 2010.
The show is always on a Thursday in August. This year, 2025, it will be held on Thursday, August 14th, and will start at 5:30 pm at Zorn Park in Harbor Springs. The park and that part of Main Street can only hold just over 200 cars. Cars start to show around noon, announced by the deep throaty growl of a V8 or the high-pitched whine of a finely tuned exotic as they roll through town.

2025 marks 10 years of the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book. The Festival is a 3 day event featuring well-known authors across all genres from kids’ books to cookbooks and everything in between.
In late 2014, while discussing ways to bring people to Harbor Springs in the off season, Harbor Light staff members, Kate Spaulding, Charles O’Neill, and Emily Meier, came up with the idea for a book festival. In partnership with Between the Covers, the local bookstore, “the Festival is a three-day celebration of readers, writers, books, and the literary craft” (hsfotb.org) and brings authors into local schools throughout the area.
Even though I grew up in Harbor Springs, 2024 HSFotB was my first year attending. Every panel I went to was wonderful and all very interesting, full of good energy and ideas. I appreciated that I didn’t need to have read the book in order to understand and enjoy the panels. I did end up buying an armload of new books that I was excited to read.
With downtown Harbor Springs as the venue, you constantly see other attendees and writers strolling the streets and enjoying this beautiful city. The cost is minimal, aside from the cookbook, luncheon, and keynote events. It is a unique experience that can be enjoyed by both locals and visitors. I highly recommend. Registration/ticket sales go live midJuly and sell out quickly. Hope to see you there in September!

Met with a mix of emotions, it’s Nubs last day of the season. Squeezing in the last few runs for the year, I am sorry to see the season end. No need to get there really early, the snow is still pretty firm. Head to the cafeteria and grab the famous sausage sandwich with egg and cheese, you won’t need to eat again today. After an extra cup of coffee, you ought to make some turns. After a bit, the snow starts to soften and the skiing is pretty good. By midafternoon, the snow is getting pretty mushy from the sun. That means one thing, it's time to head to the deck. You will find most of us there late afternoon, boots off, swapping stories, some true and some not so. The sun still sets early this time of year, and one by one, people will head out doing their goodbyes.

The beach area boasts a scenic combination of sand and rocks, with the composition varying throughout the year. We recommend wearing water shoes for both swimming and strolling along the beach. If you enjoy beachcombing, you'll find excellent rock-picking opportunities to the south of the cabin.
Step into our small yet inviting vintage cabin, which exudes a rustic, summer camp ambiance. Meticulously updated in 2021 while preserving its original charm, the cabin features a newly remodeled bathroom with a generous-sized shower, completed in 2023. Although the cabin does not have central heating or air conditioning, we provide two Edenpure heaters and a box fan for your comfort. Additionally, the windows are equipped with screens, allowing for natural ventilation to keep the cabin cool during warmer weather.
