Growing Our Services: Orthopedic Surgery

Your gifts improve our Orthopedic Program.

“Is there any funding available?” This is one of the first questions asked when an unexpected issue arises somewhere in our hospital. In many cases, generous donations have enabled the Foundation to quickly disburse the necessary funding to meet a critical need. Recently an equipment need emerged in the orthopedic services program and gifts to the Unrestricted Fund made it possible to purchase new orthopedic surgical equipment.

Thanks to our donors, upgraded equipment was purchased. New orthopedic drills and an integrated power system, which have made it possible for surgeons to perform surgeries more efficiently. Fewer delays in surgery to change tools and batteries means less time under anesthesia and improved results for patients.

“There are many orthopedic needs in our area, having a team here on campus who are equipped with the critical equipment to provide surgical care, means we are able to serve our patients efficiently and effectively,” said Todd Burch, CEO, McLaren Northern Michigan. “We are grateful to the many generous donors who support our patients and make this care possible.”

We are truly thankful for your gifts to the Unrestricted Fund. These gifts make it possible for McLaren Northern Michigan to respond to needs throughout the hospital. Every gift impacts patient care – thank you!

Colby Ward, DO Orthopedic Surgeon

Surgeon Colby Ward, DO, joined McLaren Northern Michigan in June 2022. Dr. Ward summered in northern Michigan with his family while growing up and wanted to return to the area to practice medicine. He attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate degree. He received his medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Ward completed his residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and an orthopedic trauma and advanced reconstruction and arthroplasty fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His special interests include joint revision surgeries, which is a second joint replacement procedure.

“The resources and generosity of the McLaren Northern Michigan donors are greatly appreciated and needed. The upgrade in orthopedic power instruments means that we can perform procedures more efficiently compared to before.”

The Best Start

The Family BirthPlace expands services for delivery

Approximately 500 babies are welcomed into the world at the Family BirthPlace Center at McLaren Northern Michigan each year. Having a baby is a special time in a family’s life, and expectant mothers throughout the region rely on our hospital for this unforgettable experience. Donors to McLaren Northern Michigan have contributed to the purchase of vital equipment for laboring mothers and newborn babies.

McLaren Northern Michigan is the first labor and delivery service in the area to offer a new pain management option. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is an approach that has grown in popularity among expecting mothers. This treatment has the ability to dull pain and lessen anxiety without risks to the baby.

Your gifts are so important in supporting northern Michigan health care. Please consider donating to the Unrestricted Fund so we may continue to support ongoing needs of the hospital. Every gift – no matter the size – is important and makes an impact.

Thank you!

Philanthropy has long been an integral part of the success of McLaren Northern Michigan and will continue to impact initiatives that create access to state-of-the-art care in northern Michigan.

While today’s gifts make an immediate impact on our efforts, future gifts ensure that your support continues, proving a solid foundation

“Managing pain is critical to the labor process, but a method in which the mother has more control over how their pain is managed can truly enhance their overall birthing experience,” said Jennifer Collison, Clinical Nurse Manager, Family BirthPlace at McLaren Northern

Michigan. “The many benefits of nitrous oxide, from allowing the mother to remain mobile to progress the labor process, to its nature of allowing the mother to remain in the moment, makes us excited and proud to be able to offer this to the region.”

Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center on the McLaren Northern Michigan Cheboygan Campus

Behavioral Health treatment, close to home

A new and much needed resource will open soon thanks to the generosity of more than 350 businesses, foundations, individuals, and government organizations that have made commitments to the cause.

In 2022, facility renovations began on the McLaren Cheboygan Campus to create the new Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center. Later this year, the 18-bed Pulte Family Charitable Foundation Adult Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit will open, providing desperately needed inpatient psychiatric care for our region and beyond.

The McDonald Adult Partial Hospitalization Program will be opening as well. It will offer an intensive day program to provide step-down care for patients discharged from the inpatient unit, or step-up care from outpatient therapy.

Recruiting staff for the inpatient unit and partial hospitalization program is ongoing and a top priority. The hiring process has begun to fill the 28.5 full time clinical and support staff positions that are needed.

As current renovations approach completion, planning is underway to further expand behavioral health services on the Cheboygan Campus. We look forward to sharing more information as the project progresses.

We wish to thank each and every person who supported this project, for making a difference in patients’ lives.

Improvements include:

• Lockers to secure belongings

• Charging station for digital devices

• Enlarged space to accommodate all visitors comfortably

• Modern seating with privacy dividers

• Staff stationed directly at the entrance door
