Masters of Engineering program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT is a unique 9-month program carefully and thoughtfully designed to prepare students to be leaders in the field.

SMD

Upon graduation, our students become innovators in the field of structural design and engineering, prepared to tackle global problems such as climate change or large-scale infrastructure challenges. Through classes and robust research that culminates in a thesis and is accompanied with interdisciplinary collaboration across the institute, students graduate with the ability to make an invaluable impact on society.

The subject requirement for the degree program trains students in robust technical areas, honing in on their analytical and design skills. Further, through required design subjects students refine their leadership skills with the aim to train future leaders in practice with a focus on integration and collaboration across domains.

The thesis component of the program immerses students into the research culture of MIT where they work with prominent faculty to perform a deep scientific investigation that tackles innovative, openended problems that have an impact on society.

The interdisciplinary nature of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and MIT at large, allows for collaboration across numerous disciplines such as material science and engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture and computer science.

Overview

The MIT CEE MEng program shifts the paradigm – coupling design and structural engineering to develop our students as industry leaders. In the Structural Mechanics and Design (SMD track, students redefine the discipline by blending both the elements of architecture and design with the technical aspects of engineering.

The Master of Engineering degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed a structured program of at least 90 units, consisting of 66 units graduate level subjects, and a 24 unit thesis approved by the department. In one academic year, the students are required to take: Four graduate subjects offered by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, totaling at least 48 units Within the Structural Mechanics and Design track, two of the four CEE subjects must include 1.562 Structural Design Project I (fall) and 1.563 Structural Design Project II (spring)

Two elective subjects, possibly offered by other MIT departments, totaling at least 18 units MEng Thesis, equivalent to 24 units
