At MIT, we love to apply knowledge to solve complex global problems. But applying knowledge must begin with understanding. To make a better world, we must first understand our place in it.

For three and a half decades, the MIT-Japan Program has helped us do exactly that. In the early 1980s Professor Richard Samuels saw how fluent visiting Japanese researchers were in English and how vital they were to MIT research initiatives.

He also knew that, by and large, MIT students and faculty had neither the training nor the opportunity to make the same kinds of contributions in Japan.

Those two realizations provided the spark Dick needed to start MIT-Japan. And in opening a new pathway between our community and partners in the Far East he also created a rich and vibrant opening to the world.

In the program’s inaugural year MIT sent four interns to Japan. Today it has sent more than a thousand students to work on hands-on practical projects in the country.

MIT-JAPAN CELEBRATING

35

YEARS Founded in 1981 by Professor Richard Samuels, the MIT-Japan Program prepares MIT students to be global citizens by training and giving them a first-hand look at knowledge creation in Japan. The Program offers students opportunities to work and conduct research at leading Japanese labs, companies, and institutions.

In 1983, the first four interns traveled to Japan through the MIT-Japan Program. The program has since expanded significantly and now sends 30 to 40 students per year to leading companies, universities, and research institutions. Overall, more than 1,000 MIT students have taken part at over 200 different institutions in Japan.

OVERVIEW OF MIT-JAPAN ACTIVITIES

INTERNSHIP

The flagship activity of MIT-Japan is providing intensive professional internships to our students. The program now sends 30 to 40 MIT students to Japan for placements each year. Internships typically take place during the summer over three months, but the program also supports long-term internships. To date, the Program has partnered with over 200 host institutions throughout Japan ranging from universities, government and research institutes and companies.

IN-COUNTRY CULTURAL IMMERSION

Along with research and work opportunities, the MIT-Japan Program gives students the chance to become involved with the greater community. For example, one weekend during the summer, students travel to Tohoku, the area of Japan hit hardest by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. They spend time working with senior citizens, conducting STEAM workshops and outreach to girls, and doing volunteer work. The program also sponsors a weekend retreat in Kyoto and Nara for students to immerse in Japan’s history and cultural treasures, as well as to reflect on their current internship.

They also have the opportunity to be matched with a host family for occasional visits and meals.

A handful of students each year are interested in pursuing long-term opportunities in Japan post-graduation. This includes fulltime jobs, Fulbright Scholarships, Japan Society for Promotion of Science fellowships for research, Japanese Government Monbukagakusho scholarships, graduate programs, and postdoctoral programs in Japan. MIT-Japan offers advice and connections to professional networks to help students successfully achieve their career goals. Many alumni have since become internship hosts and career coaches in Japan for our Program.

FACULTY SEED FUNDS

ALUMNI NETWORK

Each year, MIT-Japan hosts many events and training sessions to best prepare students for a successful stay aboard. The program welcomes experts in a variety of fields to share their knowledge of culture, politics, history, workplace etiquette and other relevant topics. MIT-Japan partners with the Global Studies and Languages Japan group to sponsor “Japan@MIT� that showcases Japan-related courses and resources at MIT as well as opportunities for travel and work in Japan. MIT-Japan also collaborates throughout the year with Japan-related organizations in Boston to promote cultural events.

Dr. Chikara Hayashi initiated the MISTI Hayashi Seed Fund in 2008 with a generous donation. ULVAC, Inc. provided another donation to extend the ULVAC-Hayashi MISTI Seed Fund that supports cross-border research collaboration between MIT faculty and Japanese scientists. Researchers in Japan are welcome to apply to the MISTI Global Seed Fund general pool together with an MIT faculty member. These Seed fund grants deliver the highest impact at the lowest cost for international engagement and meaningful collaboration that also include student participation.

MIT alumni are vital partners for the program. They host interns, provide advice and guidance, as well as and support scholarships through gifts to the program. Working closely with the MIT Association of Japan, MIT-Japan co-hosts a yearly summer reception in Tokyo for the MIT-Japan interns and the newly admitted MIT students from Japan.

I actually wasn’t heavily involved in the MITJapan Program until Pat contacted me about an opportunity to intern with Shimizu Corporation for breakwater research. I was lucky because I was in ocean engineering. Not many students in that program fit the profile Shimizu was looking for! I had already been accepted to the MIT master’s program, but since I had always wanted to spend more time in Japan, I decided to take advantage of this opportunity. Shimizu really took me in both professionally (I co-authored papers, accompanied colleagues on business trips, etc.) and socially. I participated in the Shimizu “undoh-kai” and was very close to my colleagues’ families.

my path. As a program sponsor, Teradyne had access to my résumé and requested that I come in for a job interview. I had no idea why Teradyne, an electronics company, would be interested in an ocean engineering major. Later I learned that they thought it was easier to teach their business to someone like me than to teach Japanese to someone who only knew their business.

1986 After I returned to MIT to pursue my master’s degree, the MIT-Japan Program again crossed

At the time, I was still very interested in working in Japan, but wondering about my career options in ocean engineering (which tended to be U.S.centric). So I joined Teradyne and left six years of ocean engineering education behind, just like that.

I was at Teradyne for five years before changing jobs and moving to Japan. I’ve been in Japan for 23 years now, including the last seven back with Teradyne! As you can see, the MIT-Japan Program certainly had a major influence on my career path, but in a totally unexpected way.

CURRENT Founder, Prairie Nanotechnology LLC I was picked by Professor Samuels for the MIT-Japan Program partially because I had already lived in Japan for a year (Rotary Exchange) and had taken the FALCON program at Cornell (first year of the two-year intensive Japanese program that the Foreign Service uses for its diplomats). During the MIT-Japan Program, I worked with Professor Sugano’s group in the Solid State Engineering Department at the University of Tokyo on superconducting weak-link bridges. Since my degree was in physics, they put me to work on the theory of the devices they were manufacturing.

Halfway through my stay, I took and passed the entrance exams in order to shift from a research student to an actual graduate student at Tokyo University. I’m still pretty proud of that! After several months, I realized

I wanted a much broader curriculum and transferred back to the physics graduate program at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, where I completed my PhD. I later went back to Japan on a post-doc and worked in space development. I then spent several years at the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy, followed by several more years at Sumitomo-3M. Along the way, I researched Japanese nanotechnology and wrote a few books. I am now back in the U.S. and have been working as a patent agent in an IP law firm with many Japanese clients while also doing technical translations for Japanese corporations. My next goal is getting qualified on my Japanese for litigation purposes.

TIM ROWE Business Administration, MBA 1995 INTERNSHIP Mitsubishi Research Institute, 1990-93 CURRENT Founder & CEO, Cambridge Innovation Center

My internship was really a long interlude between a semester at Sloan in 1990, and returning to Sloan in 1993 to finish my degree. I had an amazing experience and, for a time, I was the only non-Japanese at Mitsubishi Research Institute. I was later joined by none other than Professor Dick Samuels, the only other foreigner there then!

In the Technology Strategy Department, I worked doing long-range analyses of tech trends, such as the projected emergence of cellphones (nascent at the time) and the projected role of virtual reality in industry and commerce.

Whew. I was eventually able to write reports in Japanese and present my work in Japanese.

Soon, I acquired a motorcycle from MIT-Japan Program friend Malcolm Casselle, who also taught me how to ride it, and I was a terror thereafter in the streets of Tokyo and traversing the countryside as I explored.

Returning to the US, I finished my degree, went to work for Boston Consulting Group (which brought me back to Japan for a six-month stretch at one point), and then launched the Cambridge Innovation Center, now the world’s largest facility housing startups. We plan to open a Tokyo branch. Currently, we have two-anda-half Tokyo-based employees and are in negotiations with several potential Japanese real estate partners.

I can’t say enough good things about how the program prepared me for my career in Japan. I travel to Japan several times a year and remain fluent in the language. Though my writing skills have substantially deteriorated, I can still deliver a speech on innovation directly in Japanese.

ALEX CHACHKES Chemical Engineering; Linguistics & Philosophy, SB 1991

In 1991, with the MIT-Japan Program’s assistance, I landed a Japanese Government Scholarship (Monbukagakusho) to study at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. There, I worked in the laboratory of an accomplished scholar in the field of bioengineering. By day, I researched methods of combining aerobic and anaerobic treatment of wastewater in a single reactor.

By night, I bartended in Roppongi at the Gaijin Zone, a bar that thankfully no longer exists. The following year, thanks to the connections I made through the Program, United Technologies hired me to monitor technological developments in Japan.

Professionally, I continue to reap the benefits of my time with the MIT-Japan Program. As a patent litigator in New York, one of my specialties is representing Japanese clients. I believe they appreciate having a lawyer who gets it—navigating corporate nemawashi and hierarchy, practicing (and receiving) Japanese hospitality in ways I’d like to think would make Pat Gercik (former Managing Director of the MIT-Japan Program) proud, and the ability to go song-for-song with the best of them at nijikai karaoke. I’ve worked with Nintendo on their Wii system, Ajinomoto on their genetically modified bacteria, and Nitto Denko on their disk drive technology. The Program has opened up a world of new opportunities for me, for which I’m continually grateful.

When I was young, my father worked for Itochu, a Japanese trading company. Although I never visited Japan, my father told me a lot about it, and I met many of his colleagues, who often brought us the most incredible presents from there. My interest was piqued, and I longed to learn more about the country.

While at MIT, I heard about the MIT-Japan Program and realized it provided the perfect venue to learn about Japan. I soon found my way to Japan to do research at the University of Tokyo. The work was interesting, as was learning about work practices in Japan. In addition, I arranged a homestay, which provided an incredible opportunity to improve my Japanese while getting to experience how Japanese families live.

1996 My experiences in Japan have helped me in many ways. At Goldman Sachs, I led efforts to look for private equity fund opportunities in Japan. At my various ventures, my network in Japan and ability to effectively converse and work in Japan have repeatedly been helpful. I am currently working on a venture to provide smart energy solutions for electric vehicles and am again working closely with Japanese companies and institutions.

I’m thankful to the MIT-Japan Program for helping me create a bridge with Japan. It helped me better understand my father’s experiences working there and helped shape my professional and personal journeys.

After earning my MBA in France, I worked with the MIT-Japan Program to arrange another internship.

This time, I worked at Trimble Japan. My assignment was to look at new business applications and models for the digital radio spectrum that Trimble was using to provide high-resolution GPS signals. It was a fascinating project. Also, I stayed with the same host family, allowing me to continue to work on my Japanese.

I went through the MIT-Japan Program to Kumamoto in summer 1995 (working with children in wheelchairs to build online distance learning programs and acquire online developer skills so they could be self-employed) and the Kansai area at ATR in summer 1997 (working with a lab from NTT to build learning environments for children with speech/hearing impediments).

My experiences with the MIT-Japan Program have greatly shaped my life. I have since returned to Japan multiple times to meet my host families and internship partners, and I still work with Japanese companies. If not for the Program, I don’t believe I’d be where I am today—bridging Japanese technologies and experts to the rest of world to raise medical standards globally.

During my MIT-Japan internship, I worked with the advanced semiconductor process group at Toshiba R&D Labs. That was a good fit given my PhD thesis in semiconductor processing. I actually didn’t get my position through the program (I approached the company directly through a visitor to my MIT lab), but did take advantage of program resources like language training.

I don’t think I would have gotten to where I am now without the MIT-Japan experience. I use my Japanese language training, knowledge of Japan, and network on an almost daily basis. I keep in touch with many people that were with me in the program and with many of the people I met while I was there. All of them have been resources to me over the last 25 years.

The experience, the network and my technical training have been the “edge” that has allowed me a lot of freedom in what I do and to have a pretty interesting career. You could say my MIT-Japan experience was pivotal in creating a platform for my work life.

JUMAANE JEFFRIES Electrical Engineering & Computer Science SB 2003

After graduating from EECS in 2003, I had an MITJapan internship at NEC Corporation in Kawasaki, Kanagawa. Having just graduated, I decided to have an extended stay of 10 months. My project was the Mobile Multimedia Library, an ongoing research project which utilized signal processing methods and MPEG standards to implement optimal image recognition results.

While in Tokyo and throughout my travels in Kansai, we were all immersed in the “nomikai” experience, which is where I had most of my practice with the Japanese language itself.

2000 The various experiences and seminars made possible by MIT-Japan prior to the internship helped me get accustomed to Japanese culture firsthand. Since there were interns from other universities/countries as well, NEC was very accommodating in making our transition a smooth one while giving us a glimpse of the Japanese collaborative working style.

I enjoyed the experience so much that I decided to return to Japan in August 2004. With the help of the MIT-Japan Program, I earned a year-long internship with Kitra Co. Ltd., working with various Web and database technologies. I’ve remained in the Tokyo area ever since and just joined Fujitsu as a quality assurance engineer on a joint project with Google. It’s been a very interesting 14 years, and I plan to be in Japan well into the future. Indeed, the MIT-Japan Program has had a significant impact on my career and that of many other interns, and I hope to see it continue to succeed in the future.

In 2005, one year before my graduation from the PhD program, I started to consider where I should go next in my career. I wanted to challenge myself and explore opportunities in other countries, and Japan was a perfect place because it’s not so far away from my native country of Taiwan and is so advanced in technology and rich in culture.

2017 is the 10th year of my life in Japan.

Outside of my career, I’ve gone through important life stages, such as getting my first job, starting a family, and becoming a mother. I really appreciate the MIT-Japan Program for bringing me here.

I contacted the MIT-Japan Program right after I made up my mind. They soon gave me a list of candidate companies and research institutes, and I got a chance to interview with people from NTT Communication Science Labs and Canon in Boston.

I decided to accept the post-doc position at NTT because it best matched my research interests.

I officially joined NTT in 2007. The first few years in Japan were really challenging, both in work and in life. Communication was the key challenge for me.

It took me quite a while to overcome the language and cultural differences. In spite of that, NTT provided me an excellent research environment and the freedom to choose research topics, so in 2010 I decided to stay there as an employee. That same year, I married with my husband, who is Japanese and worked in the same lab at the time. Since then, Japan has become my second home.

My MISTI experiences were absolutely integral to my education at MIT and to who I am as a person.

I began my odyssey by learning Japanese and going through the detailed preparation provided

by MISTI. I ended up having three internships in Japan. The final one—at the Tokyo Institute of Technology—was likely the most impactful. My educational focus is games, Japanese games in particular. During that internship, I developed a “blur” effect that would work on threedimensional objects in apps and computer games. Essentially, this work is the basis for my master’s thesis.

2010 When students are able to work abroad, they gain a different perspective. It makes us genuinely more worldly. It also fosters

One of my most important takeaways is that it doesn’t matter if you end up living and working abroad. What matters is that you develop more ways to connect with more people, even if you stay local. Companies in Japan sometimes hesitate to partner with companies in America, because they worry about the cultural differences.

For me, the in-depth MISTI preparation was a crucial first step, because the Japanese people I met recognized the effort and appreciated it.

MINA BLUME Materials Science, SB 2017

INTERNSHIP IHI Corporation, 2015

CURRENT Master’s program at University of Tokyo, Department of Materials Engineering with the Japanese Government Scholarship (Monbukagakusho)

I really enjoyed my internship with IHI Corporation in Japan. My project involved oxidation property evaluation of silicide and ceramics for use in jet engine turbine vane materials.

Most of my work dealt with studying oxidation, corrosion, and diffusion—subjects I’d learned about the previous spring in 3.022, Microstructural Evolution of Materials. In my research, I was also able to call on some of what I learned in the various labs I’d done at MIT. My supervisor was very surprised when I was able to explain exactly how the scanning electron microscope and EDXS produced the data they do.

Having been to the University of Tokyo with 3.004, I knew they had a pretty good materials department, so I looked for programs at University of Tokyo and found the International Multidisciplinary Engineering program. I also found a lab that was linked to Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) so I’d be able to research materials in the same field as I had at IHI. Thankfully, I got into the program and the JAXA lab. Now I’m excited to move to Japan and continue my studies of both materials science and Japanese.

The following summer, I had an internship in California and noticed that, just as in Japan, the people in R&D generally had advanced degrees.

I was interested in doing research and learning more about the particular field of materials that I’d explored at IHI. I started to consider grad school in order to pursue a career in R&D but was not ready to commit to a PhD program.

Interning in Japan was such a fun, enjoyable experience, and I knew that Japan has NIMS, a national institute dedicated to materials science research. I had visited NIMS during my internship at IHI, so I focused my search there.

SAMANTHA AMEY-GONZALEZ Biology, expecting SB, 2018

INTERNSHIPS Jasmine Veterinary Cardiovascular Medical Center in Yokohama, 2016; Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University in Musashino, Tokyo, 2016

Thanks to the MIT alumni database, I landed my first internship, in small animal cardiology in Yokohama at Jasmine Veterinary Cardiovascular Medical Center. It was also the first veterinary internship in MISTI history.

One of the best moments that summer was passing the job list for the day’s surgeries and seeing my name on it. I’d started off knowing nothing about cardiology, vet medicine in Japan, or medical Japanese, and I still became a real part of the team.

That small piece of paper taught me I could adapt to a new environment and overcome language and cultural barriers.

2016 The first few weeks were hard. On my second day, a dog passed away after complications during open heart surgery, and I had no idea what was going on for days because I was scared to communicate in Japanese. After that incident, I spent my evenings studying surgical techniques and reviewing terminology. I stopped being afraid of getting in the way of the vets and followed them around everywhere.

Because of my great first MISTI experience, I returned to Japan, this time to research aquatic medicine at Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University. Over those two summers, I met vets and students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, France, Argentina, and a few other countries.

The little things, like learning the command for “sit” in different languages, drawing pictures on the back of blood test forms to explain a procedure without English, and having adults with PhDs ask me to translate discussions made me realize I loved the challenge of working with people from around the world.

That has inspired me to work in international veterinary medicine, where I can make the most impact.

MISTI showed me that I picked the right career path and helped me clarify what I want to do.

ULVAC-HAYASHI MISTI SEED FUND Connecting MIT with researchers in Japan

In 2008, Dr. Chikara Hayashi, the former president of ULVAC Inc., made a generous donation to establish the MISTI Hayashi Seed Fund. On the 10th anniversary of the fund, ULVAC, Inc. honored Dr. Hayashi’s generosity, idealism and desire to give back to the MIT research community by renewing its support for expanded collaboration across the Pacific.

MIT-Japan is deeply grateful to Dr. Hayashi and ULVC, Inc. for the continuation of the Seed Fund. Since 2008, the program has awarded over $750,000 to 29 projects in Japan.

The ULVAC-Hayashi MISTI Seed Fund program operates on the premise that forging grassroots connections between faculty members are the most effective way to create lasting and mutually beneficial collaboration between institutions. Relatively low investments have generated high impact and created great value and visibility for MIT and their Japan collaborators.

2008 The ULVAC-Hayashi MISTI Seed Funds program has fostered collaboration between faculty and research scientists at MIT and their counterparts in Japan. Collaborative faculty seed funds serve as a mechanism for encouraging new and deeper faculty engagement between MIT and counterparts in Japan.

DR. CHIKARA HAYASHI

ULVAC, Inc., short for “Ultimate in Vacuum,” was founded in the postwar era and its original goal was to aid in the economic recovery of Japan.

The six founders of ULVAC dedicated their work to improving the lives of people both in Japan and the world. Dr. Chikara Hayashi, father of the Hayashi Seed Fund, was one of the founders.

Not too long after Dr. Hayashi joined ULVAC, Richard S. Morse — MIT alumni and founder of National Research Corporation (NRC) in Cambridge, MA — provided free technical support on vacuum technology to ULVAC. Dr. Hayashi never forgot the gratitude and support that ULVAC received from Dr. Morse.

Dr. Chikara Hayashi (1922-2011) was a modest person who dedicated his life to research and the advancement of vacuum technology. Dr. Hayashi worked in vacuum technology immediately after graduating from the University of Tokyo as a Japanese Navy Inspector of vacuum technology. After his work with the Navy, Dr. Hayashi returned to the University of Tokyo’s Nuclear Physics Department, continuing to focus on vacuum technology. He experienced first hand how the economic devastation after the war made it very difficult for Japan to get materials for research.

MIT-Japan is deeply grateful to Dr. Hayashi and ULVAC, Inc. for their generous donations that have supported hundreds of students and faculty to collaborate with worldchanging institutions in Japan.

The death of a star in a core-collapse supernova is one of the cosmos’s most awesome events.

The energy density is so large that microscopic interactions affect the macroscopic physics of the explosion. This physics is encoded in three signals: photons observed by telescopes in different wavelengths, neutrinos observed in particle physics detectors and gravity waves detected by the LIGO Observatory*. The detection of one or more of these signals can teach us fundamental things about particle physics and stellar evolution. As we wait for the next supernova, we are currently 100 years overdue for a supernova in our galaxy, the collaborative team sought to understand what physics we could extract by the combination of these signals and whether the combination would increase the sensitivity of these studies to more distant events.

Search for Supernova Using Neutrinos and Gravitational Waves

Professor Winslow and Professor Koji Ishidoshiro’s team, her collaborating partners at Tohoku University, are building bridges across campus and across the ocean for these studies.

They have brought together neutrino experts from the Japanese lead neutrino detector KamLAND with gravitation wave experts from MIT’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) group. Their collaboration created a new international group looking at neutrino experiments and capturing data of near-by supernova. To date, the group has published two journal articles, had MIT students conduct research in Tohoku, and submitted additional funding from National Science Foundation proposal based on this work.

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Rainer Weiss, Professor Emeritus in MIT’s Department of Physics and his key collaborators — Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne of California Institute of Technology in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) .

GETTING THE CRUD OUT: FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE THAT COULD TRANSFORM THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY Safely testing a new technology is one of the most formidable challenges facing researchers who work on the design and operation of nuclear reactors.

Moving from predictive simulations to experimental validation can be costly, time-consuming, and risky.

“No matter how sound the underlying science, you can’t deploy a new technology into a working reactor based solely on computer modeling” explains MIT Assistant Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering Michael Short.

Short and MIT colleague Assistant Professor Emilio Baglietto faced just such a dilemma in 2012. The pair were making great progress modeling the negative effects of CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposits) on the performance of light water reactors (LWRs) but lacked the means to demonstrate their predictions under actual conditions. “We knew about Japan’s CRIEPI (Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry) facility—the only one of its kind in the world at that time—where such tests could be run without radiation,” Short says.

“But they lacked the funding and the band width to operate such experiments.”

CRUD matters because it fouls the cladding on the surface of fuel rods. CRUD accumulation obstructs heat transfer and can cause rods to fail. Fuel rod failure, according to Short, “causes unscheduled outages that would cost a typical 1000MWe power plant approximately $12 per second. With our new MISTI-funded PWR loop, we’ve shown how our fuel surface cladding modification greatly reduces fouling. This approach not only makes reactors run more predictably, it increases efficiency and decreases the radioactivity of fuel rods.”

Because the teams managed to duplicate the conditions in a nuclear reactor without the risk and expense of working with radioactive material, they were able to turn a $30K initial grant into a $4.5 million investment from a nuclear power plant operator. “We’ve demonstrated the validity of our research simulations to the extent that it is safe to deploy in an operating nuclear facility,” Short says. “This breakthrough could transform the nuclear power industry within three years of deployment.”

Although Short wasn’t an MIT faculty member at the time, his status as a Principle Investigator (PI) qualified him to apply for the MISTI Hayashi Seed Fund grant. That funding enabled Short and Baglietto to collaborate with CRIEPI scientists Masahiro Furuya and Hirotaka Kawamura to build a new, non-radioactive pressurized water reactor (PWR) loop at MIT. “CRIEPI’s expertise was essential in helping us design the optimal PWR loop for our experiments,” says Short. “We also were able to support continuous interaction between our two teams to add validity to our data.”

LOOKING In assessing our past 35 years, Professor Samuels provides a reflection and context of our program: “It was obvious that the United States — an even MIT — had become complacent. It is as we had forgotten that the true “secret of American science and technology” was the fact that many of our most creative researchers and entrepreneurs were born somewhere else. Openness to new ideas from the best and brightest researchers from everywhere in the world had to be defended. And that is what we set out to do — prepare MIT students to be global citizens.”

While the United State of America and Japan’s role in the international community has changed, in some respect Professor Samuels’ words ring true today as much as it did 35 years ago. We
