Understand Different Types of Impact Windows

Popular Types of Impact Windows for Your Florida Home

1. Single Hung Windows Single-hung impact windows are pretty much your everyday window. The bottom glass pane slides up to open, moving down vertically to close again. This window style is ideal for standardly-sized openings and is the most cost-effective option across almost every room of your home.

2. Double Hung Windows Some homeowners choose double-hung windows instead of single for better airflow. The main difference is that double-hung windows slide up to open up the lower pane and slide down to open the upper pane. That means the glass opens from both the top and the bottom.

Because of the extra mobility, double-hung windows are often slightly more expensive than single. For some homeowners, it’s worth the cost for the wider airflow, while for others who may have back problems or limited strength, it may not make sense to pay more for a window that opens from the top if the top will always remain closed.

3. Casement Windows Casement windows open inward (sometimes outward). They often operate by a crank mechanism and can be hinged on either the left or the right, depending on the homeowner’s preference. This style offers a more open, clear line-of-sight than single or double-hung windows— without a horizontal middle brace bar obstructing the view to the outside— boating quite a sophisticated look for an elevated aesthetic.

4. Skylight Windows Why limit your windows to four walls? Take to the ceiling! Skylights are great ways to add natural light to a room without sacrificing privacy or wall space. They can be used to show off a ceiling's striking pitch, bring the beautiful sky “in,” and offer sun and treetop views. This window style is ideal for illuminating hallways or small spaces like bathrooms without extra wall space, but could, of course, be installed in any room of your home.

5. Bay Window Bay windows protrude outward, typically spaced in 3’s in a curved fashion. Because these windows hang out over your wall in the exterior, they create the illusion of more space without costly home additions.
