The moment I was crowned, I felt a surge of different emotions but above everything: gratitude. Gratitude to God for helping me to achieve a dream for which I had so much passion; gratitude to friends and family who dedicated so much to helping me win; gratitude for the opportunity of a lifetime. This past year, there have been plenty of changes — some I have agreed with and others I haven’t. There have been times where I’ve felt frustrated or like I couldn’t keep going... but then I always went back to that feeling the night I was crowned.
Competing at Miss America was one of the best experiences of my life. I will never forget the first time I stood on the Boardwalk Hall stage and how my eyes welled up with thankful tears. Representing Utah was such a privilege and I felt honored to receive the Non-Finalist Talent Award, but the best part was the sisterhood I was able to develop with powerful and confident women from every part of the country. Even though there were many uncertainties surrounding the competition, sharing the experience with 50 other women gave us courage in knowing we were not alone.
While Miss America was a monumental part of my year, my favorite parts have been the little moments the cameras didn’t always capture: The excitement that dawned on kids’ faces when I would play “Baby Shark” on the violin; power-posing with students of all ages; the conversations about leadership and mental health with teenagers; the looks of hope and happiness on hospital children’s faces; the wisdom I was privy to through interviewing Forever Miss Utahs; long travels with Leean; serving and laughing with the 2019 candidates; and more, are those I am most grateful for. Miss Utah has always been more than just a pageant — it’s a job about making people across the state feel important, and I’m lucky to have had it.
This year would not have been possible without the army of people supporting me.
First, my sponsors: Thank you. Thank you for the tanning, dresses, jewelry, eyelashes, haircare, salon services, makeup, fitness services, apparel, and more. Each of you are so generous and attentive. Thank you all for being so kind to me! You have become my great friends over the year. And special thank you to Murdock Hyundai for being supporters of our organization for TEN years! I was always safe and riding in style thanks to you.
To the Miss Utah Board: Thank you for all of your love and support throughout this year. It’s been a transitional year for all of us, and I’ve been so impressed by how you have all taken this challenge head-on. And special thank you to Carly, Whitney, and Leean: Carly, thank you so much for all of your support and kindness throughout this year. You’ve always built me up and have made me feel so confident in this role. I love that we both got to handle these new changes together as a team. I love you!
2019 Little Misses
Whitney, I owe so much of this experience to you! Thank you for helping me plan and fulfill my goals this year. Thank you for taking the time to help my blog posts look their best, helping me forward my initiatives, and being my confidante and friend from the beginning to the end. Thank you so much, sister!
Leean, I’m going to miss our adventures together! From braving snowstorm after snowstorm to traveling to all the remote corners of Utah, there’s no one else I would rather travel with. You’ve understood what this year has been better than anyone, and it’s been a privilege to share it with you. I will always treasure our conversations, all of the fun memories involving Diet Coke and ice cream, trips to Maverik, and much more. I will miss you. Utah will miss you.
To Lyle Larsen, the Wilsons, the Millards, Brooke Maxwell, and Kara North: Thank you for caring about me and for helping me become so prepared for Miss America. You freely gave your advice and help, and then so many of you also traveled to support me at Miss America. I am blessed to have met each of you through this experience. I’m grateful for our friendship and love you all so much.
Jess, Katina, and the Miss GSL Board: Thank you. I was so lucky to have such a great team to prepare me for Miss Utah and Miss America. You sacrificed countless hours to help me become the best I could be for each phase of competition, and you will never know just how much that meant to me. You’ve become my close friends and I’m excited to continue working with you!
Tyson: Thank you for being the ultimate supportive boyfriend in this process. I’m so lucky to be with someone who realizes the significance of this opportunity. Accompanying me to events, taking picture after picture, and listening to me talk your ear off about my year, are just a few of the things you’ve done to support me. I love you and I’m so excited for our future together.
To my Johnson family: thank you so much for loving and supporting me every step of the way. You’ll never know just how much it has meant to me. I’m lucky to have grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who have been with me for the whole ride. You’ve been the best cheering section I could ever ask for. Thank you for coming to Miss America and cheering me on each year at Miss Utah. I love you all.
Matt and Jake: Thank you for being such great brothers and being there for each and every pageant! You two are the cutest and have the best hearts. I’m so lucky to have you.
Rachel: I love you and am so grateful to have you as a sister. You’ve always been there to cheer me on both in real life and through Instagram comments. Thank you for coming to my events, supporting me, and always providing a listening ear for whenever I needed it. Thank you and I love you.
Ally: Competing last year with you is a memory I’m so glad we have. Thank you for all of your encouragement, love, and support from the moment I won until now. I love you!
Dad: Thank you for caring about my year. It meant so much when you would ask what appearance I was leaving for or what I had been up to as Miss Utah. You’ve been so supportive and have really believed in the power of this program. I love you!
Aimee: We all miss you so much. Each Utah themed gift you gave me to commemorate my year, how you cared so much to watch each Miss Utah Monday and read every blogpost, and so much more, are memories I will always treasure. Even though I’m heartbroken you’re gone, your spirit of love, service, enthusiasm, and your zest for life inspire me every day. I love you forever.
Mom: I’m here because of you! My love for this organization was born because I grew up watching your passion for it and the women you helped prepare for it. You’ve sacrificed so much to help me achieve this dream and have always been the ultimate example of how to treat others with kindness. Thank you for traveling with me, helping me brainstorm ideas on how to be a better titleholder, reading my articles and watching each video, and for building me up. You’ll forever be the queen and I love you.
To the next Miss Utah: I am so excited for you. This job will push you in ways you couldn’t even imagine. There are so many opportunities to look forward to, but the most important is your opportunity to make a lasting impact wherever you go. Always be on the lookout for little eyes who are watching and waiting for your attention, always ask what more you can do, have an attitude of gratitude, be proactive, push yourself, and always remember what a blessing this is.
Thank you, Utah. It has been a privilege and honor to represent and wear your name across my heart each day.
In the words of Taylor Swift: Long live all the mountains we moved I had the time of my life with you.

An aspect of Miss Utah I look forward to every year is the time I get to spend with the hostesses. These women have become my friends, confidantes, and cheerleaders over the years. LeaAnn Southwick was my hostess during my first competition year and I was a nervous rookie but she believed in me. Backstage prior to each competition, she would give me a hug, look me in the eye, and say “You can do this. It doesn’t matter that you’re a first-year — you’ve got this.” My other hostess, Jill Tolley, was so kind and uplifting. Even when I had dresses that had difficult zippers or we had any kind of dilemma, she was a calming presence that made me feel at ease. I vividly remember her waiting backstage to help with my dress and bringing an extra can of spray glue in case I needed it. I felt that both my hostesses — and all the hostesses for that matter — truly cared about my well-being and genuinely loved me. That kind of support is what led me to have the confidence required to perform at my best. The hostesses have by far been one of the best parts of this experience and I’m so grateful for them. -Jesse Craig, Miss Utah 2018

In May 2018, thanks to the Miss America Organization, I was lucky to graduate debt-free from The University of Utah with a BS in Economics and a BA in English. I was able to pursue my education free of financial stress because of the scholarships I received. After I finish my time as Miss Utah, I plan to attend law school and the scholarships I have received will help me significantly with obtaining my legal education. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 children’s hospitals across North America, including our very own Primary Children’s Hospital. Founded in Salt Lake City in 1983, Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals has raised over $4 billion, most of it $1 at a time. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all in support of CMN Hospitals’ mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. 32 million children are treated at a CMN hospital every year, and 62 kids enter a CMN Hospital every minute.
Miss America has served as the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ National Goodwill Ambassador since 1989. Miss America candidates at all levels raise money and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the Miss America Scholarship Foundation. All state candidates are required to raise $350 for CMN Hospitals and MAO scholarships in order to gain eligibility to compete for the title of Miss Utah. The Miss Utah Organization was recognized at the Miss America 2019 Competition for our outstanding fundraising efforts last year. We raised $82,944.11 for CMN Hospitals and MAO scholarships, and we were the second highest fundraising state in the nation! This year, we created the Miracle Bronze, Miracle Silver, and Miracle Gold awards to highlight candidates who have gone above and beyond their fundraising requirements to help make miracles happen.
This honor is awarded to candidates who raised over $2,500 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and MAO scholarships.
“Throughout my childhood, I’ve had several friends as well as my twin brother admitted to pediatric floors across the state. Being able to fund raise for CMN Hospitals has made me feel as though I’ve been able to give back to the people that have helped my family and friends. I love how it goes hand in hand with my social impact initiative “Hospital Heroes: Advocates for Children in Hospitals” and it brings such a joy in my life to be able to help these children (and their families) embrace the superhero that they are!”
“I have had a lot of personal experiences with CMN Hospitals and I can’t thank them enough for all they do. The families that are going through these medical trials have so many things on their mind that money should not be one of them. I have loved helping raise money for these families and hopefully helping make their burdens a little lighter because these families are real life super heroes.”
“My Social Impact Initiative, ‘Healing Hearts Through the Arts,’ is all about using creative expression to help heal and unite individuals and communities. I collected donations for CMN Hospitals by hosting multiple benefit concerts and commissioning portrait artwork. I have captured the spirits of many amazing families, children, cancer patients, veterans, and people who have passed away. From small drawings to large oil paintings, I have been able to share their legacies through art while supporting a good cause. By using my passions for the performing and visual arts to fund raise for CMN Hospitals, I do what I love so that children in desperate medical need can also have the chance to grow up to do what they love.”
“As a young child, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say a pediatric cardiologist. Why? I was born with a heart defect, and my doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital that helped me with my treatment were my heroes. This year, it’s been a sacred privilege to act as a local ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and hopefully provide some relief to the patients and their families. Thank you to everyone who has supported my efforts!”
“Like many others, my family has been directly impacted by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. When I was very young, my brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Primary Children’s Hospital played a crucial role in educating my family about diabetes and helping us learn to embrace our new reality. The impact that these hospitals have all over the country is truly amazing. I am grateful to be part of an organization that has children’s well-being as a top priority.”
“Raising money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has provided me with so much joy and an intense, overwhelming desire to help those around me. This year, I personally visited Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, where I was able to interact and connect with patients. I experienced firsthand the amazing quality of work that these hospitals provide. It is truly astonishing how well they take care of their patients and how much courage those patients have. I could never imagine having to go through the struggles they do. CMN Hospitals help build patients’ strength, which is evident by the smiles on their faces and the hope in their hearts.”
This honor is awarded to candidates who raised over $1,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and MAO scholarships.

This year, the Miss Utah Organization is honoring Leean Gray for 29 years of service to the young women that participated in the Miss Utah program.
Her involvement began in 1990 when she volunteered as a hostess at Miss Utah. After several years, Leean became the Hostess Chair and oversaw all of the hostesses involved with Miss Utah week. By 2004, she was hooked and agreed to take on the role of serving as Miss Utah’s traveling companion and business manager.
Fifteen years later, and she has now driven hundreds of thousands of miles with 15 Miss Utahs. While some might see this role as one of the more fun and exciting positions on the Miss Utah Board, it requires a lot from one individual: they must be selfless, punctual, organized, and patient to make sure Miss Utah has many successful appearances. Leean has served with her whole heart and becomes a close friend and confidante for each Miss Utah.
The Miss Utah Executive Board is sad to see Leean retire after going above and beyond in this role. She will be greatly missed by many throughout the state.
Leean grew up in Provo, Utah and raised four children. She now has ten grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. When not taking Miss Utah to her next event, Leean can be found caring for the elderly in her neighborhood, spending time with her grandkids, and serving at the Provo Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
My Little Miss, Lexie Webb, is my sweet cousin and has been the best Little Miss. She has so much personality and is so sassy! She has so much confidence, is the sweetest social butterfly, and is more like a 16 year-old than a 7 year-old. I loved getting to share the Miss Utah experience with her and witnessing her excitement. Watching her put on pretend pageants for fun this past year with her sisters and cousins has been amazing! I love that for her, and so many other little girls like her, participating in an organization like this is a huge dream and aspiration. I love her & am so excited to continue watching her grow up. -Jesse Craig, Miss Utah 2018
Sadie was the oldest of five girls, and was wise and mature beyond her years. She loved art, puzzles, reading, baking, dance, and playing the Wii. It was said that if you could bottle up Sadie’s laugh and sell it to the world, you would be rich! She had the greatest smile and most infectious laugh. She loved her family dearly, and her sisters were her best friends.
A few months after her 5th birthday, and just a week before diagnosis, Sadie was having symptoms that included bad headaches, slurred speech, and balance issues. We took her to the doctor on March 3, 2008, and were immediately sent to Primary Children’s Medical Center for a CT scan. Through that scan, and subsequent testing, we learned Sadie had brain cancer – a rare and inoperable brain stem tumor referred to as DIPG. Due to the makeup and location of the tumor, surgery wasn’t an option, and there was no proven effective treatment. With or without treatment measures, we were told that within the year, Sadie would succumb to her disease.
Sadie fought with much bravery, and was an amazing example in her fight to all those around her. Throughout her battle, she had many tender mercies come her way, one of which was being chosen as “Little Miss Eagle Mountain” by Miss Eagle Mountain 2008 Kim (Onions). She formed a special bond with Kim, as well as Miss Eagle Mountain 2009, Jessica (Bare).
As her battle was drawing to a close, she was too sick and weak to attend the festivities surrounding the Miss Utah pageant in 2009. We were indeed humbled when representatives of Miss Utah visited our home and presented Sadie with a beautiful white Little Miss dress. Not long after this visit, and after an almost 16 month valiant battle, Sadie passed away on June 25, 2009 at the tender age of 6.
As we prepared for her services, it seemed only fitting that she be laid to rest as the princess she was. She was dressed in her beautiful white Little Miss dress, complete with her Little Miss crown.
We, as Sadie’s family, have been extremely humbled by the Miss Utah organization for honoring Sadie’s memory every year since her passing. As the pageant always runs close to Sadie’s “angelversary”, it is a tender experience to share an award in her name to a very capable and hard-working Miss Utah contestant. As hard as it is to choose just one contestant from the many amazing choices, we try to choose the one that has exemplified the most drive and passion with their social impact initiative, and who we feel Sadie would want us to pick! We will be forever grateful to the Miss Utah organization for the blessing of continuing Sadie’s legacy in this capacity.
Kelly Hale was a dedicated volunteer in the Miss America Organization. He and Stan Stensrud co-directed Miss Salt Lake County for over 10 years. His titleholders consistently placed in the top three at Miss Utah during that time.
Kelly had a wit and charm that put contestants at ease whether he was judging or helping to prepare them for competition. He volunteered for many years as a judge, director, and coach. Kelly’s titleholders often said that during their year of service as Miss Salt Lake County, they felt like they were receiving a four-year degree.
Kelly loved helping the contestants competing in his program become the best they could be. Kelly took great pride in each young woman, regardless of her background or experience.
In the years following his directing, Kelly continued to support the Miss Utah program and was a regular at the competition each June. The “Kelly Hale Non-Finalist Awards” have been created in his honor as a way to continue his passion for helping young women succeed in their scholastic endeavors.
