There she is... Miss Neurosurgeon, Miss Social Activist, Miss Jet Pilot, Miss Investigative Journalist, Miss Expert Coder, Miss CEO... Miss Whatever-She-Wants-To-Be.

And yes, she is beautiful. Beautiful in the way she is smart, principled, and passionate. Stunning in how she leads, commands a room, and makes an impact. Striking in her genuineness, fearlessness, and general awesomeness.

Never guided by what she ‘should do’ but forever driven by what she ‘could do.’

She has the confidence, the skills, and is empowered to make it happen.

There she is, Miss America. No wonder she has a crown - she rules.

LINDSEY WON $4,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE MISS AMERICA 2023 COMPETITION!

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Miss Utah 2023 Scholarship Competition! The past year has brought a whirlwind of change to the program: Both the state and national organizations experienced change in executive leadership, the contestant age eligibility increased to include up to 28-year-olds, and the scoring criteria has changed to include a Health and Fitness competition in partnership with the American Heart Association. One of my favorite changes is the return of the “Four Points of the Crown,” or the values of Style, Scholarship, Success, and Service. These four principles - with the important addition of Sisterhood - are back as the Miss America Organization’s brand pillars and are guiding decisions to move the program forward into this new era. We appreciate you being part of our program’s new chapter and look forward to what the future holds for the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization.

Though the path to becoming Miss Utah has looked different over the years, Miss Utah has remained a representative of our state’s unique values and defining attributes. For example, Miss Utah has been, and continues to be, talented. Since the talent

portion of the competition was added in 1935, Miss Utah representatives have won 32 talent awards at the Miss America Competition - more than any other state organization. People often joke that there must be something in the water here, especially as these talent accolades coincide with a statewide emphasis of developing talents and the long list of Utahns who have pursued successful careers in the performing arts.

Miss Utah also continues to be service-minded. The community service initiative (formerly called the “platform” or “social impact initiative”) aspect of the Miss America program actually originated in Utah. Miss America’s national officials were so impressed by Miss Utah contestants’ impact on our statewide community, that they adopted that concept for all titleholders nationwide in 1989. Our local titleholders’ impact on their communities remains strong and is reflective of a statewide value of serving others. In fact, Utah is continually ranked as the most charitable state in the nation, where on average, Utahns log more annual service hours than our peers in other states.

As our organization continues to

move into the future, let’s remember our past. The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization has a rich, 97-year legacy involving hundreds of volunteers and thousands of contestants. We have so much to honor, and Miss Utah Week should be a time to celebrate.

We celebrate all who have been part of this program. We celebrate our 47 contestants and their hard work to compete on the Capitol Theatre stage. We celebrate our statewide network of local volunteers who continue to give so much to this organization. We celebrate our state volunteers’ efforts to make this competition possible. We celebrate Lindsey Larsen, Miss Utah 2022, and her legacy of movement. We celebrate womanhood and the opportunities to empower Utah’s women through style, scholarship, success, service, and sisterhood.

To all who love, support, and believe in this program, We celebrate you. Thank you for being part of our program’s past, present, and future.

Sincerely,

www.missutah.org 3

LINDSEY LARSEN

Miss Utah 2022

Lindsey Larsen is from Lehi, Utah, and is a junior at the University of Utah, studying ballet performance and kinesiology. She began ballet training at the age of 4. Since then, her dance journey has taken her to stages in Utah, Washington, and Hawaii, and into lead roles with Utah’s own Ballet West Academy. Lindsey was a talent scholarship recipient at the Ballet West Academy and one of 40 students accepted to the University of Utah’s prestigious ballet program. Her career ambitions include becoming a professional ballerina, an artistic director, and a health educator.

As a dancer, Lindsey believes in the power of movement. As Miss Utah, she has traveled the state to promote her community service initiative, The MOVEMENT Movement. Through this initiative, she equips students, teachers, and individuals with disabilities with the resources they need to improve their mental, physical, and emotional health through daily movement-based activities.

Lindsey has spoken with more than 2,000 Utah students and partnered with organizations like the America Heart Association of Utah, Select Health Program, and the Utah County Health De-

Thursday Evening

JACKIE HUNT HERRIN

Miss Utah 2001

Jackie Herrin was born and raised in Lehi, Utah. After high school graduation, she entered the Miss Lehi Pageant because she thought it would be nice to have her picture taken for the program. This began an unanticipated succession of events, and much to the surprise of everyone who knew her when that first picture was taken, she went on to win the Miss Utah title in 2001. This took her to the Miss America Pageant where she placed in the top ten and won nearly $40,000 in scholarships. These scholarships were used to earn a degree in English editing at BYU.

Wearing a crown gave Jackie the opportunity to be an advocate for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Jackie spent many years speaking throughout the state and around the country about this important issue, and she received multiple national community service awards for her efforts. Beyond the previously mentioned scholarships and awards, Jackie also won a husband in all of this—Her husband, Taylor, is the son of the former Miss Utah seamstress, and they met during her Miss America fittings.

Jackie and Taylor have four children: Claire, Kyle, Grayson, and Jay. They moved to Farr West in 2020. After studying the piano with Dr. David Glen Hatch, Jackie taught students of her own for nearly twenty years. When she isn’t driving her children to and from all the places they need to go, Jackie spends time writing, sewing, building things, perfecting her Rubik’s cube skills, weaving towels and rugs on her three looms, and doing basically anything else she can come up with to avoid housework.

Friday Matinee JACKIE WINTERROSE FULLMER Miss Utah 1959

The journey to Miss Utah began for Jackie in 1955 when she was crowned Miss Observation in Cedar City and later crowned Miss Cedar City, Miss Iron County, and 1st runner-up to Miss Utah 1957. Jackie continued to win other titles and represented the University of Utah as their Founders Day Queen when she was crowned Miss Utah 1959. She then went on to compete in the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. With whatever title she carried, Jackie has always made the most out of representing the people - whether participating in various events or appearing on TV for the popular “Steve Allen Show” on NBC in Los Angeles, California.

@missutorg 16

From the time Jackie was Miss Utah, she has continued to be an active with pageants and dance competitions by coaching numerous contestants with dance routines, stage presence, modeling technique, interview skills, as well as judging a variety of pageants and dance competitions.

After graduating from Cedar City High School, Jackie studied and performed professionally while living in Hollywood, California. Upon returning to Utah, she finished her education at the University of Utah and continued to use her theatrical talents on stage and eventually on screen.

Jackie has a BS/MS degree in Dance Education. Her teaching career began at Utah State University in 1960, where she organized and launched the dance program and dance major. She choreographed for and directed the USU Aggiettes, the first Dance Drill Team in the state of Utah, and received numerous accolades during her time.

Along with her teaching, Jackie’s dance career also includes directing and choreographing for a variety of performing groups that have toured and performed throughout the U.S. and internationally. In addition, Jackie has choreographed many national events and was on the choreography team for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. She was also the first National Director of Dance and Drill Team with the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games, where she helped get dance recognized as a sport.

Once of Jackie’s greatest accomplishments is the overall impact she has had on the competitive dance community. Jackie organized and directed the first drill team and solo competition in Utah, the Rocky Mountain Drill Team Competition and Miss Dance Drill Team Utah Competition, which were the first of their kind in Utah. Since then, this format has flourished and has become a mainstay across the competitive dance

community in Utah and across the U.S., giving young dancers the chance to compete on a regular basis.

Jackie’s loving family is her deceased husband Kay, who she met while participating in an event as Miss Utah, her son Jeff, daughter Jenn, and six grandchildren. She currently lives in St. George and Salt Lake City. She is happy to see the positive development of the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization over the years and is grateful to still be involved with such an amazing organization.

Danielle has been playing piano for more than 25 years, performing on stages across the country. Jill received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Southern Utah University. She has since specialized in Pediatric Critical Care, and has 14 years of experience as an Emergency Department Nurse. Currently, she is the Nurse Team Lead for Children’s Health in Dallas, Texas.

MISS UTAH’S TEEN

The Miss Utah’s Teen program (formerly known as Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen) started in 2005 with the goal of encouraging positive achievement by nurturing scholastic achievement, healthy living, creative accomplishment, and community involvement in young women across the state. Today, the Miss Utah’s Teen program continues to support and reward community service, talent, communication skills, and academic achievement.

As the sister program to Miss Utah, Miss Utah’s Teen shares the Miss America Organization’s core values of style, scholarship, success, service, and sisterhood. In the program’s 18-year history, over 375 young women have competed on the Miss Utah’s Teen stage, and hundreds more across the state have participated in the program on a local level. The Miss Utah’s Teen program not only helps young women across the state build resumes, pay for college, and prepare for their future careers, but it also creates opportunities to gain additional life experience, build confidence, serve their communities, enhance personal and professional skills, and develop performance-related and other talents.

SCHOLARSHIP

Miss Utah’s Teen has been Utah’s premier scholarship program for teens for the last 18 years. Scholarships are awarded to deserving young women on the basis of academic merit and civic and social achievement. Both cash and in-kind scholarships are awarded to contestants without condition or obligation to provide future services.

state titleholders have collectively earned $150,000 in scholarship assistance paid to Brigham Young University, Utah State University, the University of Utah, Utah Valley University, Harvard University, and the Julliard School.

GET INVOLVED

Applications are now open for Miss Utah’s Teen 2024. The competition will be held February 16-17, 2024 at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo. Areas of competition include private interview, performing arts talent, onstage conversation, health and fitness (no swimwear), and evening gown. Young women born between 2006-2010 who live and attend school in the state of Utah are invited to apply.

Visit www.muoteen.com to learn more about the Miss Utah’s Teen program, eligibility criteria, phases of competition, becoming a contestant, and finding a local competition.

When Miss Utah’s Teen first began, the scholarship package was under $8,000. Today, the Miss Utah’s Teen Organization offers over $100,000 annually in cash scholarships, in-kind awards, and tuition waivers from partner universities. Miss Utah’s Teen

JAYLYNN LINDLEY MISS UTAH’S TEEN 2023

Jaylynn Lindley was crowned Miss Utah’s Teen on February 18, 2023. Hailing from Salem, the 16-year-old is a junior at Salem Hills High School. Jaylynn won $6,300 in cash scholarships with the title. At the competition, she won Preliminary Talent and Evening Gown/Social Impact Awards. She also received the 11th Grade Scholastic Achievement Award, Overall Dancer Award, Over all Evening Gown Award, and Overall Fitness Award.

Jaylynn is preparing to represent Utah at the Miss America’s Teen Competition, which is anticipated to be held in early 2024. The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization appreciates her work as Miss Utah’s Teen and can’t wait to cheer her on at the national competition.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR GOAL OF BECOMING MISS UTAH’S TEEN?

I have always had a strong desire to be a part of something greater than myself. Through this program, I feel connected to so many incredi ble people, initiatives and doors have opened up in countless ways! I have grown up watching and learning from such positive women involved with the Miss America Organization over the years and it felt like a great move forward for me, to be involved.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE?

“Find Your Fire” is all about helping teens to find their passions and purpose in life. I help teens and others to find their purpose through looking at what their Future goals are, Interests, Reasons for their desires, and how their life Experiences have impacted

them. I underwent a hip surgery at 13 and I was in awe of the team of medical professionals that took care of me. I knew I wanted to help young athletes like myself in my future career. Through finding my own fire, I know how much it has helped shape who I am and who I want to become.

WHAT ARE YOU INVOLVED IN OUTSIDE OF MISS UTAH’S TEEN?

My two passions in life are dance and education. Dance has led me to my future career choice of becoming an orthopedic surgeon and is truly therapeutic for me. I love staying active and healthy, and dance is a perfect way to do that. I also love being studious! Some may call me a nerd… and I am completely okay with that!

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Driven, dynamic, and influential.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO ASPIRE TO BE MISS UTAH’S TEEN?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AREA OF COMPETITION?

Interview has become my favorite part! It is the area that I have had to put the most work towards and has given me guidance and perspective into who I want to become. It will help me as I move forward in my future goals in becoming a BYU Cougarette and eventually applying for Harvard Medical School. Being able to articulate, stand on a stage, and share pieces of who I am are life skills that will open doors for me.

You don’t need a crown and sash to make a difference. Figure out what you are passionate about and get to work! Following your passion, will lead you to your purpose. Also, don’t be afraid to be different! Be different in your standards, dreams, and desires. So much of the world is telling us how to dress, what to drink, and what mold to fit in…I believe being authentic and happy is where true confidence and leadership begins. Those are valuable assets for anyone, but prerequisite for a titleholder.

LITTLE MISS PROGRAM

The Little Miss program is the “Little Sister” program to Miss Utah, a scholarship fundraiser, and a beloved tradition and a highlight of Miss Utah week. These young girls not only perform and promenade onstage, but they also get a behind-the-scenes look at production, work hard to support their contestants, and get the opportunity to make lasting friendships. The Little Miss program inspires girls around the state to get involved in their communities and develop their talents. We hope they will return to the Miss Utah stage as contestants someday, and even be crowned as Miss Utah!

2023 LOCAL VOLUNTEER AWARD PAT POCE

Patrick Poce’s involvement in the Miss America Organization spans nearly 50 years. He is a seasoned panelist who has judged numerous local competitions and has been part of the Miss Weber County Organization for 23 years. Pat became an advising mmber of the Miss We ber County board in 2000 and has served as the local executive direc tor of the Miss Weber County Competition since 2010.

Pat is proud to be part of an organization that gives young women the opportnity to expand their talents and further their education. In Pat’s words, he loves “being part of the growth of young women and their passion to achieve greater goals, and possibly a future of their perfections.” Through his years as director, several Miss Weber County titleholders have won preliminary awards and placed in the Top 10 and Top 5 at the Miss Utah Competition. Pat works year-round to promote the Miss Weber County program, and he and his board continuously work to champion for new sponsorships and scholarships for Miss Weber County.

Former Miss Weber County titleholders shared the following about Pat:

“Pat always went out of his way to make me feel like true royalty.”

“Even as candidates competing for Miss Weber County, Pat goes above and beyond to make sure each and every candidate feels 100% prepared and gorgeous.”

“The skills I learned from Pat have given me a leg up in the professional world, and for that I am incredibly grateful.”

Pat genuinely cares about his community and is involved in many local organizations and events. He has owned and operated two flower shops and has served as a mentor to many young people through professional relationships. he currently directs the Eccles Art Center and continues to inspire young artists.

He is a true steward of the Miss America Organization’s mission of empowering women to lead, and the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization is honored to recognize him with the 2023 Local Volunteer Award. LORRAINE & TERRY BROWN

Recognizing the need for young women to expand their horizons in a region of the state that did not offer a scholarship pageant at the time, Lorraine and Terry Brown established the Miss Nebo/Panora maland Competition in Juab County in 2009. Lorraine served as director for eight years, sending twelve ti tleholders to represent the region in the Miss Utah Competition. Three of those titleholders were crowned Miss Utah and went on to represent the state at Miss America.

Notable accomplishments at the Miss Utah Competition include:

• Four Top 5 placements

• Seven Top 10 placements

• One Sadie Huish award

• Four preliminary talent awards

• Three preliminary swimsuit awards

• One community service award

• Three top instrumentalist awards

Lorraine was the driving force behind the creation of the Miss Nebo Organization and continues her service in preparing titleholders to compete at the state level. She and Terry also

The Browns have only one daughter of their own, but they claim many by way of pageantry. They spend much of the winter in Mesquite, Nevada but claim residence in Nephi, Utah. Their proudest accomplishments are their immediate family: Keith, Natasha, Berit, and Gunnar Lockhart. During any given summer, they can be found at the Ute Stampede Celebration ... on many occasions with, you guessed it, a Miss Utah or Miss Utah’s Teen and their families.

Today, you will be quick to find Lorraine out shopping with a current titleholder, providing fashion savvy advice on gowns to another, or sitting in a mock interview with pop culture trivia. The Browns’ enduring legacy will con-

The Miss Utah Scholarship Organization expresses their sincere gratitude for Lorraine and Terry’s dedicated service. Their legacy of love and generosity has impacted dozens of young women and their families for the better. Thank you, Lorraine and Terry, for believing in the program and continuing to empower Utah’s women!

BECOME A CONTESTANT

Competing for the Miss Utah Opportunity is a process that requires hard work, talent, and personal commitment. Each year, hundreds of local contestants work to make a difference around the state of Utah as they develop awareness and opinions of current issues, establish personal social impact initiatives, and perform various service in their communities.

Participating in the Miss Utah Scholarship Organization is one of the most rewarding, life-changing experiences available to Utah’s young women, even if they don’t win a local title. In 2022, over $200,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to Miss Utah’s local contestants. To be eligible to compete, young women must be a U.S. citizen between 18-28 years of age, meet any residency requirements set forth by their local competition, and be willing and able to fulfill the titleholder requirements.

Kristin Chenoweth, Vanessa Williams, Sarah Palin, Carrie Underwood, and others participated in Miss America’s local competitions. The skills and talents they developed as local candidates in the Miss America Organization prepared them for the successful careers they lead now. You could be next!

LINDSEY LARSEN Miss Utah 2023

“WHY DO YOU EVEN WANT TO BE MISS UTAH?” This is a question I have been asked many times throughout my journey in the Miss Utah program. From sisterhood, scholarships, and personal development opportunities to sparkly crowns and gorgeous gowns, how could you not want to be a part of a program that has an iconic history so deeply rooted in empowering women to become the best versions of themselves? However, my answer remains the same, through all the fun sparkly things, my purpose as Miss Utah is not to impress, but to impact.

At 1:00pm on a sunny Saturday in February, I rallied alongside the Utah County community at a fundraising event for a boy with a rare form of terminal brain cancer. The event’s mission was to raise awareness and funds for research on a cure. As I walked into the elementary school doors, I stood before carnival games, concessions, a local news station covering the event,

and mascots from all over the state. A volunteer pulled me aside to tell me about another young girl who had also recently been diagnosed with cancer. She expressed to me that this young girl didn’t feel beautiful since losing her hair due to the treatment she was receiving. I nervously approached this young girl and her family, unsure of what I could say to possibly uplift them in such an unimaginably hard time.

“Hello, my name is Lindsey. It’s nice to meet you! What is your name?” She read the bold letters on my sash, looked at the sparkly object pinned atop my head, and gave a small smile. After a few moments of introductions, I told her how beautiful I thought her freckles were and how she had a sparkly glow to her. She once again gave a soft smile. “I only allow very certain people to try on my sash. Would you like to try it?” I asked. She nodded, and I draped my sash over her. With a smile, she tapped her mom’s arm while saying, “Mom, will you take a

picture of me?” Her mother looked confused but agreed to snap a photo. I explained to her that I had to take my sash back, but expressed that because of her courage and kindness, she always wore an invisible crown and sash.

We exchanged a hug, and she waved goodbye. The same volunteer who had initially told me about this girl approached me with tears in her eyes. She told me that little girl had refused to get her picture taken since her diagnosis, and I broke down in tears. All of my worries of, “Have I done enough?” or “Am I a good Miss Utah?” disappeared because none of that mattered. I was once again reminded that God placed me in this role not to impress, but to impact. My year as Miss Utah was led by Maya Angelo’s famous quote, “People may forget what you said, they might forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”

@missutorg 48

CREATING IMPACT THROUGH MOVEMENT

The popular 80s movie, Footloose, filmed in my hometown of Lehi, illustrates the importance of dance in our communities. Actor Kevin Bacon, portraying Ren McCormack, said, “There is a time to mourn and a time to dance, this is our time to dance. It is our way of celebrating life.” I affirm that dance and movement are a way of celebration and a way of life. This is a lifestyle I have instilled in others across the state of Utah.

Our bodies were designed to move, and recently, we have engineered movement right out of our lives. In 2021, a study done by the Utah State Department of Health found that only 16.8% of students in Utah are reaching sixty minutes of daily physical activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the U.S. are limiting physical education time in order to catch students up from what they missed. Additionally, according to the CDC, only 53.3% of adults in the U.S. meet the recommended physical activity guidelines. It has been my mission to get people excited about moving in order to improve these statistics.

Through my advocacy work, I have visited dozens of Utah schools, spoken to more than 2,000 students, and partnered with organizations like the

Utah County Health Department, B3 Powered by Select Health, and the American Heart Association. I released “Move with Miss Utah” brain break videos on my website as resources for anyone to utilize at school, work, home, anywhere. During one particular school visit, I will never forget hearing the students cheer from excitement when they played against me (and probably beat me) in a game of active rock, paper, scissors. Seeing our youth get excited about movement instilled hope in me that this next generation will create long term healthy habits which will carry over into adulthood.

In a world that is dominated by depression, social pressure, and negativity, movement provides a relief for all to use, regardless of gender, race, or other demographic characteristics. Various studies have shown that movement improves our ability to cooperate and increases our level of acceptance and respect towards others. Perhaps the most admirable quality of movement, however, is the ability to unite humanity as one. Like Ren McCormack from Footloose, I will forever use dance and movement as a way of celebrating life. I am excited to continue the efforts of The MOVEMENT Movement into my future endeavors because I truly believe that when we move our bodies, we move to change ourselves, our cultures, and our communities.

TO THE CLASS OF 2023, you are entering a new era of Miss America. You are a piece of this new legacy. Approach Miss Utah Week not as a competition, but as an opportunity to grow. You have earned your spot to be here. Now, all you need to do is press play and show what YOU have to offer.

TO THE NEXT MISS UTAH, this year will challenge and change you in so many ways. Remember that this opportunity isn’t about you. It’s about how you can impact. “Know what sparks the light in you, then use it to illuminate the world.” Being in a position like this, you are subject to many eyes, opinions, or expectations. It will be easy to question if you can do the task ahead, but don’t doubt your greatness. You are here for a purpose. All of the hard moments are helping you to be a role model to those around you and to become the best you that you can be. As Coldplay said, “Under this pressure, / under this weight, / we are diamonds taking shape.” And as cliché as it sounds, it holds so much truth. Soak up every moment because one year flies by!

Something unique about my CSI is that it doesn’t require NEW organization or program to make a difference, rather it focuses on strengthening the organizations that already exist for education. I spend most of my time strengthening the public education system through one on one mentoring, personal tutoring, peer tutoring, assemblies, partnering with home school groups and helping students discover the need for education in their process of becoming something more than they already are.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

I am convinced that “success” looks different for everyone. Because we all have unique gifts, talents, passions, goals, and work ethics. Overall, success means taking pride in what you have accomplished and knowing that you did your very best, no matter what the outward outcome may be.

WHAT DOES SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

“Scholarship” has to be my favorite pillar of the MAO brand. With a focus on progression and learning, the Miss America organization is able to help women all across the country, myself included, to pursue and accomplish their educational goals. Service means helping others no matter how big or how small the act may be. It could be as simple as caring for a friend or as elaborate as working toward creating a more inclusive community.

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?

Through my years of involvement in MAO, I have been able to form my own unique style. I am a confident person who doesn’t let superficial style define her. My style is being kind, genuine, uplifting, witty, and authentic. I believe as we showcase the most authentic version of ourselves to others, we allow others to be authentic as well.

As an older sister to Lincoln, a boy with cerebral palsy, I see the lack of inclusion for the disabled community. I have taught lessons to young audiences that push them to include those who look different from them, as well as aided in events built for disabled people. I listen to and relate the struggles of those with disabilities to everyone I can reach, so that I can cultivate inclusion and understanding.

WHAT DOES SERVICE MEAN TO YOU?

Service is a duty we should all strive to fulfill. The best way to grow, is to grow together. My past seven years of involvement with MAO has taught me that life without service is lonely. When you serve, it doesn’t always have to be a grand act. It can be as simple as opening the door for someone else. No matter the act, everyone should participate in service as much as they can in their lives.

WHAT DOES SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

A word that could be interchangeable with scholarship is opportunity. MAO empowers young women with an opportunity to chase their dreams. To get their degrees. To find their place in their goal career path. To improve their lives, and the lives of those around them.

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

We all want to belong. I have felt the strongest sense of belonging and solidarity within this sisterhood, which has spurred acceptance and growth within myself. It has helped me strive to become my best because I know they have my back, and they have a power that can nudge me to step outside my comfort zone and grow and develop in all aspects of my life. Style is a reflection of my personality and individuality. I believe my overall appearance has an impact on the way I am perceived by others, and the way I feel about myself. Having confidence is a skill that will pave the way to better relationships, career goals, and overall interpersonal skills. Anyone and EVERYONE deserves to love who they see when they look in the mirror, although it can sometimes be difficult to achieve. Educating the World: One Girl at a Time

I want to live in a world where every girl chooses her own future. Currently, over 130 million girls worldwide are not attending school. My CSI is an advocacy for their right to a formal education and provide the necessary resources for girls to succeed. When we are supporting girl’s education, we are supporting the overall proposition of growth and progress.

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

At only 9 years old MAO introduced me to the pillars that would shape my values, and provided me with a network of girls who would hold them with me. There is something special about our shared experience, as we’re now young women making our way in the world. Growing up our role models were titleholders within MAO, who taught us how to be fearlessly authentic, beautifully bold, and to act with a servant’s heart.

WHAT DOES SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

From the local level to Miss America herself, we are encouraged to further our professional development through the continuation of higher education. What sets the MAO brand apart is the reward of scholarships, and the celebration of the contestants’ intellect. Our phases of competition are designed to showcase our intelligence and professionalism, and MAO heavily supports our hard work as the world’s largest provider of scholarships for young women.

COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE Dare to Love

In 2016 when my grandmother was diagnosed with leukemia, she told her family that love was the most important thing in life. After acting on her words, I have come to realize that love goes beyond the mere service of others but is the creation of authentic personal relationships. Even when it is not in our comfort zones, we must be brave enough to not just serve others, but love others.

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?

Your personal style is like the synopsis on the back of an award-winning novel, the newly released movie trailer for an expected blockbuster film, the hooking title of a top-tier magazine article. Style is meant to give the world a glimpse into your mind and character as you simply walk into a room.

WHAT DOES SERVICE MEAN TO YOU?

I have found service to be an integral part of building personal relationships. The Miss America Organization has provided young women with motivation and opportunities to impact their communities through service. However, I have found that the most powerful acts of service occur when no panelist is watching. You shouldn’t do more service to get the crown, but get the crown to do more service.

Mind Your Mindset: “There is Nothing to it, But to Do it!”

As Miss Springville/Mapleton, I observed and spoke at selfhelp conventions where I witnessed hundreds of adults break down crying, admitting they regret not going after their dreams. These people and my personal mentors inspired me to create a 3 step plan: Visualize, Plan, & Execute. As a mentor for Big Brother Big Sister of Utah and Latinos in Action, we make actionable goals and remember the importance of protecting our dreams whenever doubt creeps in.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

One of my first jobs was serving at my parent’s cafe, and I remember hiding behind shelves to avoid taking a strangers’ order. I thought “enough is enough” so I joined the Miss Springville/Mapleton competition to hopefully overcome this fear. It was completely out of my comfort zone, but now I love meeting new people! Being better than you were yesterday is success to me.

WHAT DOES SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

Opportunity. I have been able to study abroad at the University of Oxford because of a scholarship I received through the Miss America Organization. Crossing Abbey Road, visiting J.R.R. Tolkien’s old office, and punting with friends are memories that I will treasure forever!

Kindness - Pass It On

I promote my CSI by going around to the elementary, middle and high schools throughout the Uintah Basin and putting on assemblies about showing kindness to others and giving them ideas of how to spread kindness to their peers and their community. One of my favorite things is randomly giving kindness cards (gift card attached) when I see others doing something kind for someone else.

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?

Style to me means that you are always dressed for success. When you are representing the MAO brand you have so many women and younger girls looking up to you that you should hold yourself to a higher standard.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

To me, success is the most important pillar of the MAO brand. I am a firm believer that if you wake up every morning and decide to better yourself for you, good things will start to happen. Its important to recognize that by being successful it starts with accomplishing little goals everyday. No one just wakes up successful one day you have to work for it.

Food Insecurity: Outnumber Hunger

Every day there are 1 in 10 Utahns who are unsure of where their next meal will come from, 104,840 of those individuals being children. Food insecurity is linked to decreased overall health, homelessness, and behavioral challenges among children. As Miss Utah County, I have had the opportunity to be certified in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) training and conducted six educational videos with Utah County’s Health Department serving immigrants, students, and low-income families.

WHAT DOES SCHOLARSHIP MEAN TO YOU?

My education has always been something my parents taught me to value. Being a student with ADD, having supportive parents helped me discover what I loved and wanted to pursue a career in which helped me transition from a degree in Theater and Performing Arts to a degree in Communication and Marketing. I heavily relied on my Miss America Scholarships to graduate Cum laude from Utah Valley University with a plan to be debt free.

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

My fellow titleholders are the women who will be part of my wedding. These women have lifted me up in all situations, empowered me when I feel like I have nothing else to give, and hyped me up in everything I do. I have had very unique opportunities to be involved in competitions since I was young and my competition friends, while most live in other states, have truly changed my life for the better.

I firmly believe that the key to achieving a fulfilling life is not about making drastic changes but small, consistent improvements that compound over time. By focusing on simple daily routines, we can build momentum towards a positive lifestyle and overcome the challenges we face. By educating our youth, and continuing to run 5ks, I will spread awareness about my initiative.

WHAT DOES SERVICE MEAN TO YOU?

To me, service is a way to uplift people and positively impact their lives. It is a selfless act of love and compassion that comes without the expectation of anything in return. Service is at the core of our organization, setting us apart from other groups. When we come together to serve, we have the power to elevate and improve our communities in meaningful ways.

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?

While many view style as an external factor, I believe it goes beyond outward appearance. When I dress appropriately for an occasion, I feel confident and beautiful. This is because style isn’t just about what you wear; it’s also about how you carry yourself. The way we feel about our appearance can significantly impact our state of mind and overall presence. Feeling good about how we look can radiate a sense of confidence and positivity, which can influence the way others perceive us. I believe that developing our personal style is about finding the right balance between expressing our individuality and presenting ourselves in a way that reflects our best selves.

I have been able to visit classrooms across Utah and host local events to teach the uses of art on maintaining a positive mental well-being. I have seen how sharing my story and the tools I use has changed lives.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

The way I have found success through Miss America is by discovering who I am and gaining confidence in myself. When I started competing I had a hard time speaking up for myself and I was trying to please everyone around me. I am more successful now because Miss America has shown me how to be true to myself.

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

Truth be told, this is the pillar that keeps me coming back. The Miss America organization has given me so much, but the friendships I’ve made have been the driving force for my involvement over the last seven years. I love that in every competition I do I can go into it knowing that no matter the outcome I will gain many new sisters - women who inspire me, cheer me on in my big moments, and give me a shoulder to cry on when I need it! When I say the Miss America organization changes lives I am talking about the women at every level of competition who make this organization beautiful.

Being a part of the Switchpoint homeless shelter has exceeded my expectations. Going into my Community Service Initiative, I knew what kind of service I wanted to achieve in my community. However, I was scared to get started. I will always say that fear is the key to any success. When you’re scared of something, the outcome can be that much more beautiful. Switchpoint is my family and I will love them forever.

WHAT DOES SERVICE MEAN TO YOU?

Service is so important to me. The service aspect of the Miss America organization makes me emotional. I believe that you can change the world through service. I think it is amazing that individuals all over the world use service as an outlet to help others. Volunteering, partnering with organizations, and putting yourself out there to make new connections is one of the most memorable parts of this organization. I hold service so dear to my heart, because it means the world to me. I love making an impact on others, and I love when others make an impact on me. That is what this organization is about.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

In my personal opinion I believe that success is so much more than just getting your dream career or even achieving a goal. I truly believe that success lies within us as an individual. What I mean by this, is that success would be equal to happiness. In my future, I do want my dream career, I hope I can achieve all of my goals, but my main end goal is true happiness.

WHAT DOES SISTERHOOD MEAN TO YOU?

Sisterhood to me means supporting one another in our own aspirations and goals. I believe it’s lifting one another up and being there for one another when the hard times roll in. It’s a community of love and support.

I have partnered with Community Actions Services Food Bank in providing resources to the Hispanic Community.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU?

As a young girl, when I heard the word success, I instantly thought of winning, being number #1, the opposite of failure, however, as I have grown, I have learned that success is so much more than that. Success is the ability to fail; yet, to press forward. It is being able to be told no, or not getting the outcome you expected, but to continue trying. Success is a mindset, not a destination.

WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?

As I was in my student teaching this semester, my 3rd grade students told me “Miss Ulloa, you have the best style.” At this point they were talking about my thrifted wardrobe. Beaming with pride that they loved my style, I recognized that style is not just our outward appearance, but it characterizes who we are. It is being proud of who you are and the unique characteristics that you possess.

Miss America & Miss America’s Teen Chief Empowerment O cer

Back to the Future, with the New CEO

To the Miss America & Miss America’s Teen family and friends,

My vision is to set the stage for the next chapter with the mission that has run through every facet of this brand for decades. A mission embedded within the very essence of our program, “Empowering Women To Lead” through scholarship, community service, personal style, and success, all symbolized by the ‘four points’ of the crown, set upon a foundation of sisterhood.

Miss America & Miss America’s Teen programs have always been invested in creating a strong network of women who make a positive di erence in the world. Our programs are foundational in helping to foster the next generation of strong, confident, and compassionate leaders.

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have for empowering young women. By providing opportunity, access, and financial support for quality education, we are helping to break down barriers and open new opportunities for young women to advance.

Community service is a key component of our programs. Encouraging young women to give back to their communities helps them to develop a sense of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility.

Personal style development helps young women to express their individuality, promoting self-confidence, selfexpression, and self-esteem. Personal style is about creating a unique and individual expression of oneself that reflects who you are and how you want to be seen in the world.

Encouraging young women to pursue their dreams, set goals, and work hard to achieve them, instills resilience and determination that will serve them well throughout their lives. Measuring success through accomplishments provides a sense of satisfaction, recognition, and motivation to continue pursuing one’s goals.

Overall, by Empowering Women to Lead we create a brighter, more equitable, and more compassionate future for all. I invite everyone to join me in stepping into the future, going back to the principles upon which this iconic program was built, Scholarship, Service, Style, and Success.

On December 15, 2022, Grace Stanke , representing her home state of Wisconsin, was crowned Miss America 2023, and awarded $50,000 in scholarship. This was the third time Miss Wisconsin has been crowned Miss America in the history of the Organization.

During the competition, Stanke won the talent portion, performing a piece from “Vivaldi’s Summer/Four Seasons – Storm” on her electric violin.

Stanke, who has earned a cumulative total $68,000+ in scholarship assistance through her state and Miss America competitions, will travel the country using her national platform to continue advocating for “Clean Energy – Cleaner Future.” Encouraging worldwide change for clean, zero-carbon emission energy sources, Stanke emphasizes the benefits of nuclear power and seeks to dispel the myths around nuclear energy while inspiring the next generation of female scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.

Stanke will graduate in May 2023 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in nuclear engineering.
