issoula International School continues to significantly influence the educational landscape in Missoula. As a pioneer of immersion education since 1995 and among the first in the region to adopt the International Baccalaureate Program, Missoula International School proves that it is not only possible, but also important to successfully educate Montana kids in global contexts. The strength of MIS rests on its three pillars of language immersion, international education, and a multiage community. These core pillars are the MIS advantage. The preschool through eighth grade program continues to develop, innovate, and evolve. The 2009-2014 Strategic Plan guided MIS through a period of incredible growth. It proved to be a strong guiding document, and continues to lead Missoula International School into our 20th anniversary year. Vision 2015 is the roadmap for this next, exciting leg of the MIS journey. It lays out our plan for advances in STEAM education, community development, and fundraising for a permanent home. MIS is bold and visionary- it reflects the needs and attitudes of its students- eager to be positive influences in the world. MIS invites all parents, grandparents, alumni families, and community allies to join MIS in this bold journey – to become navigators, translators, researchers and guides on our next steps into the 21st Century. 1. EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE Cultivate lifelong learners and principled global citizens by providing a strong, balanced and continually evolving academic program that prepares students for the future.
VISION 2015 MIS MILESTONES • Authorized IB World School in 2009 leads to the successful completion of re-evaluation visit in 2013. • Head of School becomes IB Educator who offers school site visits and IB workshops for teachers nationally. • Annual PYP Program of Inquiry review ensures alignment of the Science and Social studies curriculum. • New math curriculum adapted in 2012 provides a stronger and richer math education for MIS students. • Graduating 8th graders leave MIS above grade level in reading and math.
VISION 2015 GOALS • Strengthen the Middle School program by developing a core middle school teaching faculty, beginning the MYP implementation process and increasing Spanish immersion. • Increase Spanish opportunities in middle school. • Build technological and human resource capacity to increase and enhance STEAM offerings across the grades and throughout the curriculum. • Increase faculty led professional development opportunities and improve the systems for teachers to share their experiences with the rest of the teaching staff.
2. SCHOOL CULTURE & VALUES Nurture a school culture that reflects MIS values of creativity, cooperation and connection and inspires lifelong learning and global citizenship among all members of the MIS community.
VISION 2015 MIS MILESTONES • A move to primarily paperless communications creates new technological and global exchange opportunities for the MIS community. • The IB Learner Profile guides all student and teacher evaluations and develops core values. • Annual surveys and feedback indicate that MIS families feel connected to the school through the school’s mission of lifelong learning and global citizenship.
VISION 2015 GOALS • Build a stronger sense of community among all members of the MIS “family”– students (across all the ages-on the playground, in the hallways), board, parents, grandparents, alumni, and the greater Missoula community. • Actualize the diversity plan by communicating the demographics of MIS, while developing stronger connections with diverse community groups. • Work to develop stronger community service opportunities for students, staff, and parents.
3. FINANCIAL HEALTH Build upon a diversified business model and a culture of philanthropy to ensure the financial stability of the School for our children and our children’s children.
VISION 2015 MIS MILESTONES • Careful budgeting practices, guided by the school’s mission are providing the greatest possible opportunities and benefits to all MIS families and faculty. • Record parent participation in giving (89% in 2013/2014) and participation in earned income programs like SCRIP provide the funding necessary for innovative learning and essential technological resources.
VISION 2015 GOALS • Clearly define the Board’s financial priorities for the next 3-5 years and communicate them to the parent body. • Increase fundraising infrastructure, systems, and protocols to launch and implement a successful capital campaign to raise at least $7 million toward a permanent facility and endowment. • Increase income from non-tuition revenueprimarily increasing the efficiency and success of enrichment programs. • Expand and deepen the Long-Range Financial Plan to: a) more fully reflect the school’s strategic plan, technology infrastructure and equipment, marketing, and future fundraising initiatives, and b) support growth in enrollment, staffing, and programs.
4. FACILITIES Take steps toward establishing a permanent home to accommodate the current and future needs of the school’s preschool through eighth grade program.
VISION 2015 MIS MILESTONES • Renovations to the classrooms and playground spaces over the past three years provide students with more light, warmth, and spaces to learn and play. • Facilities focus groups in 2014 involved parents, faculty, and staff in the long term planning process.
VISION 2015 GOALS • Make a sound decision that ensures that MIS will have a permanent home.
5. LEADERSHIP The MIS Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty will partner in leadership to implement the School’s mission and guide MIS in to the next generation accordingly.
VISION 2015 MIS MILESTONES • The successful realization of accreditation with the Northwest Association of Independent Schools was an affirmation of the Board and the administration’s development as strong leaders for the school. • MIS has created new leadership opportunities within the faculty to provide additional lines of communication, collaborative leadership with curriculum and budget, and opportunities to develop leadership capacity among the faculty. • Assistant Head of School completes National Association for Independent School’s Fellowship for Aspiring School Heads.
VISION 2015 Goals • Build Board capacity to meet the needs of a successful capital campaign. • Professionalize and finalize a Head of School contract. • Evaluate and develop a plan to ensure adequate staffing, infrastructure, and in-house expertise to support future school initiatives.
VISION 2015 6. COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS Engage more fully in relationships with the local and global community to enrich the classroom experience for MIS students and enhance the visibility of MIS in the Missoula Community
MIS MILESTONES • MIS continues to develop ongoing partnerships with the NWAIS community, the IB community, the University of Montana, and local organizations such as EPI, MCT, and SpectrUM. • MIS students participate in regular electronic collaboration with other schools worldwide. • MIS hosted a Global Education Luncheon last year to raise awareness in the Missoula community about MIS and the IB. • Middle School students participate in service projects with a variety of community organizations. • 5th Grade Exhibition Projects have both local and global impacts.
VISION 2015 GOALS Continue to demonstrate the public purpose of private education to the community and strengthen the collaborative relationships with other educational organizations in Missoula – more specifically: • Participate in International Education Week in November 2014 with UM and MCPS. • Assist MCPS with the development of the Montana IB Association. • Work with MCT to make the annual play a larger community event. • Work to develop stronger community service opportunities for students, staff, and parents.

Grandparents Responsible for Advancing New Dreams
Missoula International School is excited to announce the formation of the GRAND Society, “Grandparents Responsible for Advancing New Dreams,” whose members will be the grandparents of current or past MIS students. Grandparents share a vital and ever growing influence on students’ lives. They make many contributions to their grandchildren’s development in life, from teaching specific skills and values, to mentoring and providing financial help, and most importantly, to providing the caring and loving every child needs. We know how important it is for grandparents to be involved. The GRAND Society was founded by an MIS grandparent in order to to give other MIS grandparents an opportunity to work together to build a legacy for current and future students at MIS.
