I’m so incredibly lucky to have strong women in my life that empower me to be my best.
- Matti-Lynn Chrisman Miss Ohio 2018
There is no way I could fit an entire year of gratitude onto one page. There are so many people who have touched my journey and made it more fulfilling than I ever could have imagined. Juliana & the Heichel family, thank you for all your kindness and love. Thank you for Miss America shopping with me and cheering me on. Sarah Hider, thank you for being the definition of a Miss Ohio sister. I was so thankful for your help and support especially on my journey to Miss America. You will always be my Miss Ohio. Steven Stanley, thank you for your continued support of all the ladies here at MOSP. We love you! To my group of church moms, thank for the hours of driving, fundraising, and cheering me on. I’m so incredibly lucky to have strong women in my life that empower me to be my best.
The Miss Ohio Program is made up of volunteers, but it is truly a family. To the Nickoli’s and the Moore’s, thank you for bringing me into your families. Ellie and Ava, you are two of my best friends. I’m so honored to watch you grow. Thank you (and your awesome moms) for traveling all the way to Atlantic City to cheer me on at Miss America. You will never know how much I love you. Julie & Bruce, thank you for the late night hummus talks and flowers at each theatre performance. I’m so very lucky to have you two in my life. Joyce, Brad, & Madeline, thank you for the V8 energy drinks, ghost dog searches, and delicious tea. I’m so thankful God placed the three of you in my life.
Beyond the volunteers, I am thankful for the bonds I’ve created with many of the Miss Ohio sponsors. To Chris from Henri’s Cloud Nine, thank you for making me feel beautiful and powerful in every dress you put me in. To my Renaissance family, thank you for tying this theatre even tighter to my heart this year. I look forward to performing on this stage in the future with you all by my side. To Sylvart and the Watkins family… I don’t have the words. Brent, you have been such a great friend to me all these years. Thank you for all the moments filled with food, laughter, and Hamilton. The Plank Family, I am so honored to have received this scholarship in the memory of such a loved soul. You have all been so loving and supportive of me this year. I promise to always keep your family in my prayers and keep Natalie’s memory alive in my heart.
To Vicki, Allie, Ann, and Dolly: thank you for molding me into the best version of myself. It was you who helped me most as a local titleholder to become the Miss Ohio I was blessed to be. I am honored to have grown with each of you by my side.
There are many things that I’m willing to give up when I crown the next Miss Ohio. I will gladly pass on the crown and sash, but one thing I’ll never pass on is my friendship
with Doc Stumbo. Doc, you have quickly become my best friend and my partner in crime. I’m so thankful for your support and sponsorship of the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program, but I’m even more thankful that I got a whole year of lunches, events, stories, and learning from you. I hope the next Miss Ohio sees the wisdom and kindness in you and cherishes your friendship. I love ya, Doc. Thank you.
To all the hardworking members of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention here in Ohio, thank you for giving me a constant outlet to share my story and give support to a community of warriors. Every event with the AFSP community is like caffeine for my soul. It reminds me that hope is enduring and light is constant when you choose to open your eyes. I look forward to working with you in the future.
To the Miss Ohio Board & volunteers, thank you for the constant backup and all the hours you put into MOSP. We are a success because you are dedicated to empowering young women to create solid futures for themselves. Steven, thank you for always making sure that I am safe and thriving (and keeping me alive through Miss America paperwork). Mother, thank you for all the trail mix and prayers. Sherri, I’m pretty sure you were the only thing holding me together through the stress of picking a Miss America gown. I’m so grateful for your loving spirit. Terri & Gabe, thank you for the many hours you’ve put into the Miss Ohio production. We only look good because you let us. Sharon, thank you for keeping us ladies on track and putting together host homes year after year. To the Bishops, thank you for your hugs and high fives. I love all of you so very much.
Ashley, did you ever think we’d make it here? You’ve been with me every step of this journey (and every journey) for the last 15 years. I am so thankful and proud of who you are. Some people live their entire lives without the love of a true best friend. I have been lucky enough to have it my whole life with you. Thank you to Ashley and the entire Pearson family for supporting my wildest dreams. I love you all so much. #PavedDriveway
To every woman I have met competing in this amazing organization, thank you. I’m so thankful for your sisterhood and support. Each of you have shown nothing but kindness and love towards me. I look forward to years of friendship with you.
To my team of parents, I can never repay you for all you’ve given me on this entire journey. I would have never succeeded or become the woman I am if it weren’t for the four of you. Thank you for raising me like a princess and a warrior. Thank you for showing me that, with God, everything is possible. Thank you for giving me my best chance. I love you so much.

The goal of our efforts is to find the best Miss Ohio and potential Miss America. This responsibility rests solely in the hands of our distinguished judges. When the candidates appear before them in the various competitions these judges will consider their attributes and their ability to represent the ideal American woman; a woman with dignity, poise, charm and beauty, as well as the necessary intellect, education and talent to carry Ohio’s hopes to the coveted Crown of Miss America.
The Miss America Organization is not looking for a beauty queen; there are dozens in every state. We are seeking a woman capable of symbolizing American ideals and standards while carrying out this responsibility in the interest of her country.

“If it makes you smile, it’s my bag.
- Kathrine Baumann Miss Ohio 1969
If Kathrine Baumann can’t make you smile, she’s not about to give up. Kathy Lynn Baumann grew up in the small town of Independence, Ohio, where she tapped into her enthusiasm, strength, and determination at an early age. These traits combined with her sunny “can do” attitude and amazing talents propelled this winner to the top.
In 1970, Kathrine fulfilled one of her dreams by winning first runner-up in the Miss America Pageant and the coveted Talent and Swimsuit awards out of 70,000 contestants. Using her Miss America scholarship funds, Kathrine enrolled in filmmaking courses at UCLA and spent a summer studying abroad at Oxford University. Kathrine also studied acting under the auspices of the renowned actor, Agnes Moorhead.
During her 15-year acting career, Ms. Baumann guest-starred in a variety of television productions including M*A*S*H*, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Knight Rider, Simon and Simon, The Fall Guy, Fantasy Island, Trapper John M.D., CHIPS, Dukes of Hazard, Vega$ and several Movies of the Week. The “Henry In Love” M*A*S*H* episode, written for Kathrine by Oscar-winning producer Larry Gelbart, is ranked as one of the top three M*A*S*H* episodes along with those guest-starring John Ritter and Robin Williams. Ms. Baumann co-starred with Jane Seymour in the #1-rated Movie of the Week, “The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders”, which remains one of Kathrine’s favorite roles since she portrayed the “bad girl” rather than being cast in the usual girl-next-door role. While under contract to 20th Century Fox, Ms. Baumann’s film credentials included a co-starring role with Richard Harris and Chuck Connors in “99 44/100% Dead.”
Known for her talent, charm and classic beauty, Kathrine was selected as the spokeswoman for such mega companies as Schlitz, Rubbermaid, The Family Fitness Centers, and Chrysler. Ms. Baumann was also featured in several top selling posters along with the legendary Farrah Fawcett from Charlie’s Angels.
At the height of her acting career, Kathrine was involved in an accident that left her with 272 stitches in her left leg, one of a pair that had been titled “The Most Beautiful” by Hollywood studios and admitted her to the ranks of Marlene Dietrich, Betty Grable, Ann Margaret, Raquel Welch, and Marilyn Monroe. In spite of the sudden end to her movie career, Ms. Baumann was determined to triumph in the face of adversity and turned to art and design to reinvent herself. Her art work was featured in the window of Rodeo Drive’s Dyansen Gallery along with artists including Norman Rockwell, Frank Galo, and Erte.
In a supreme act of faith and armed with unwavering “purse”-erverance, Baumann launched Kathrine Baumann Beverly Hills and is now affectionately celebrated as the “Beverly Hills Bag Lady.” Combining her natural talent for design with her showmanship and experience in marketing and as a spokesperson and as an actress, Ms. Baumann creates whimsical and couture minaudières that have established her as the “Queen of Hollywood’` Red Carpet.” This world-renowned “Beverly Hills Bag Lady,” touted by CNN as the “female Andy Warhol,” has certainly come a long way from those humble beginnings in Independence, Ohio.
“If it makes you smile, it’s my bag”
-Kathrine Baumann
