Urban Environment Personal Project 3

Personal Projects: Urban Environment An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban areas have nonagricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and railways ."Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs.

"City life is millions of people being lonesome together." ~ Henry David Thoreau " Each of us-adult or child-must earn nature's gift by knowing nature directly, however difficult it may be to glean that knowledge in an urban environment." ~ Richard Louv "Cities, like cats, will reveal themselves at night." ~ Rupert Brooke " I will say that growing up as a kid in an urban environment and having lived in cities all my life, the one achievement that everyone can look forward to is getting the perfect parking spot" ~ Saul Perlmutter

Urban Environment - KEIRA CROSSLEY / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Iwan Baan- Artist Investigation “I choose my projects not so much for the architecture, but for its relationship with the city around it and how people respond to it, I’m trying to tell the story of the built environment—the places where we live.” - Iwan Baan Why this quote? I chose this quote, as it is directly from Iwan Baan and he explains why he chooses his projects. He chose his projects more based on the relationship architecture has with the city and people, rather than just architecture itself. His deeper thoughts were inspiring to me as it led me to think about the meaning behind architecture in cities. Why this artist? I chose Iwan Baan for his photography style, I like the areas he shoots in especially the snowy regions. His work inspires me as it taught me that architecture is everywhere. Before seeing Iwan Baan's work I hadn't realised city like buildings could be located in snowy atmospheres. Who is Iwan Baan? Iwan Baan is a Dutch photographer who was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, 8th February 1975 making him 46(2021). He has challenged a long-standing tradition of depicting buildings as isolated and static by representing people in architecture and showing the building's environment, trying "to produce more of a story or a feel for a project" and "to communicate how people use the space". Why this Image? I chose this image as this is the kind of photography Iwan Baan took that inspired me. The image is located in a snowy region which I find beautiful and fascinating.

10 Images from Iwan Baan:

SEMI Analysis: Iwan Baan Subject: The photographer of this image is called Iwan Bann. This photograph has the title "MAD Architects, China, Iwan Baan" It was taken in Chaoyang park plaza as part of a series in 2017. The genre of this photograph is landscape of modern architecture. In this photograph I can see 3 buildings, each a different shape and size, which Iwan Baan has carefully chosen to photograph together, to create a good balance of foreground, midground and background. Elements: The composition of the photograph shows the building with the most reflective qualities and abnormal shape is captured in the foreground located to the left using the rule of thirds. I can also see the midground has a half captured building to have the eye of the viewer further appreciate the dominant building. I can also see a tall building in the background of the image which is captured again to compliment the main focused building. The viewer's eye is lead around the photograph because of the composition and perspective Iwan Baan has used. The perspective that Iwan Baan has taken the photo from is birds eye view. This perspective is effective because as it brings the image together as a whole.

Urban Environment - KEIRA CROSSLEY / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Media: This photograph has been taken from a long distance so it has a wide depth of field. This is so buildings are the main focal point of the photo. This photograph has been taken outside using natural light, the natural light creates the natural highlights and shadows of the photo, it also creates slight reflections on the main building in the foreground. This creates an atmosphere because of the clever use of foreground, midground and background to create the different focus points. To emulate this photograph myself, I would use my Canon 2000D camera using the correct settings to create a wide depth of field so a high aperture, such as, F22 or F24. I would also ensure enough light is being let into the lens I would be using which would be my kit lens (18-55mm). I would do this by using a a shutter speed that isn't too high or too low, creating the perfectly exposed image so perhaps around 1/60 to around 1/125. I would use a tripod to steady my camera and a shutter release cable to ensure the stillness of the shot. I would need to shoot during daylight hours, Ideally, on a dry, sunny day. Additionally, I would also need to research more about how Iwan Baan takes his photographs e.g. settings and equipment, to further my accuracy in emulating his work. Intent: I feel this photo conveys a message of calmness. This is done by Iwan Baan's use of the different focal points. This creates the sense of calmness, as it smoothly takes the eyes of the viewer on a journey around the image. The use of space and perspective also contributes to this feeling of calmness. The work of Iwan Baan and this photo in particular is relevant to my project as it shows the modernism of buildings and landscapes today which clearly links to urban environment. The strength of this photo in my opinion, is the capture of the photography elements; shape, texture, line ,form, pattern, colour/tone and space. The weakness of the image however, would be the slight appearance of the powerlines. However, this can't really be prevented and it could also be argued that it shows further modernity of this urban environment.

Pedro Correa - Artist Investigation 2 "My work revolves around the beauty I find in the energy of the big cities. There is, in my opinion, no need to force beauty, it is already out there." - Pedro Correa Why this quote? I chose this quote because Pedro Correa's words inspired me, the way he mentions the energy of the big cities and how the beauty shouldn't be forced as it is already out there. This made me want to photograph cities myself to capture both of these elements, the beauty especially, without forcing it. Why this artist? I chose Pedro Correa as my second artist to investigate due to his clever style of photography, the way he uses his atmosphere to create scenic views. I also like how he doesn't stick to just one dominant theme, he varies what he photographs. Who is Pedro Correa? Pedro Correa was born in Spain, 1977, making him a Spanish photographer. Pedro Correa now currently lives in Brussels. After living in Madrid and Barcelona. He studied oil painting and comic art at Brussels Royal Academy of Arts. He was also fascinated by the work of American photographer, Saul Leiter. POWERED BY https://keiracrossleygcsephotographypghs.weebly.com/urban-environment.html

Why this image? I chose this image due to it's dark low-key atmospheric mood. I also enjoy his use of a vignette and the way he plays with shadows and light. In this image he additionally, uses an element of neon colours and a variation of tones. I can also identify from this image, a good use of shape, form and line, these all being vital elements of photography.

10 Images from Pedro Correa:

SEMI Analysis: Pedro Correa Subject: The photographer of this image is called Pedro Correa. The title of this photograph is 'Espresso Bar' which was taken in 2013. The genre of this photograph is narrative photography as it is brought to life by the colours and blur of the image, this also doing the story telling. There is also a further genre of landscapes, as he widely photographs buildings and other elements of cities.

Element: The composition of the photo actually shows the title of the image 'Espresso Bar' in the top left corner of the foreground. The composition further reveals the blurred view of people in the midground of the image. The viewer's eye is lead around the photo by Pedro Correa's clever use of the element line, as we can see the clear line of yellow-tinted lights through the window. The perspective Pedro Correa has taken the photo from is around about eye level. This perspective is effective as it portrays what we would see if we were to walk past this particular espresso bar on what looks to be a cold night, as the windows have been affected by condensation which would be from the heat from the people breathing inside. Similarly to Iwan Baan, Pedro Correa employs a visual range of elements in his work. The most striking elements are texture, line, shape, colour and tone. Media: ontrasting from Iwan Baan's photograph, this photo has been C taken from a short distance to capture nothing but the espresso bar and what's inside. This is so the life of the bar is captured. The photo is also different as it is has been taken using artificial lighting, however, it has similarly, been taken from an outside point of view. The similarity of this photo with Iwan Baan's photo, is the use of the rule of thirds, both of these images are evenly divided into sections, each section holding a significant part of the image. Furthermore, Both artists have taken a direct and abstract approach when photographing their images, to result in the viewer being lead carefully around their work. To emulate the work of Pedro Correa, I would use my 2000D Canon DSLR camera with my 18-55mm kit lens attached. Furthermore, I will also use a tripod and shutter release cable to ensure stability within the image. The settings I would use would be an aperture around f/8 to f/16 to achieve the wide depth of field in the image, I would then also use a shutter speed that isn't too fast however, faster enough to make it a clear image. I would have my ISO set to auto. Intent: Finally, I feel this photo conveys a mood of calmness and a feeling of relaxation by it's use of warm temperature tones and colours which contrasts to Iwan Baan's image of cooler temperature tones and colours. Pedro Correa's photography is relevant to my project as he cleverly demonstrates urban environments in his photographs. Pedro Correa also uses the element line in this photo to compliment his use of colour.

Adam Letch - Artist Investigation 3 “I started teaching photography, working my way up to head of photography at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town. Things are a little foggy, but I think I lectured full-time until about 2013, so for about 15 years or so. With a waning enthusiasm for a career in education and a deep seeded need to shoot, instead of teaching, I started freelancing.” - Adam Letch Why this quote? I chose this quote as Adam Letch evidently shows his professional skills in photography as he talks about his years of teaching the photography career to others. He also demonstrates his desperation to take photographs himself, instead of teaching. Furthermore, in this quote, Adam Letch shares his experiences in the teaching work of photography and how it just wasn't enough to fulfil his desires and dreams to travel and take photographs. Why this artist? I chose Adam Letch as my third artist to investigate due to his beautiful captures of these picturesque places. Moreover, his work also fits in well to my project (Urban Environment). I also found the way he cleverly uses the elements of photography in his work inspiring, which has encouraged me to possibly emulate his work in the future Who is Adam Letch? Adam Letch is an established mid-career artist. He was born in 1972. Adam Letch currently lives in Cape Town with his wife. He also loves to travel with his work. Finally, he is photographic graduate of the Michaelis School of Art (UCT), a former photography lecturer and head of department now specialising in producing photographic imagery of the built environment for a range of prestigious clients around the world. hy this image? W I have chosen this image from Adam Letch as it clearly demonstrates his use of the photographic elements; line, texture, colour, space and shape. This image also shows his use of reflection in the windows of the building which further reveals his knowledge when taking photographs in photography. Finally, I chose this image due to it's high key photography and the use the outdoor natural light, It also has a positive dynamic which portrays positive moods and feelings, such as; calmness, relaxation, joyfulness, freedom and just overall positivity.

SEMI Analysis - Adam Letch Subject: The photographer of this image is called Adam Letch. The title of this image is SAOTA - Bali, Indonesia and it was taken around 2018. The genre of this photograph is residential landscape as it advertising the residence of most likely a higher class area in Indonesia. Furthermore, there is an element of the genre nature, as Adam Letch captures the beautiful colours of the sky. The props I can see in this photograph are, bathing chairs, a dining area under a canopy in the background and finally, what looks to be a bar inside the property. Element: The composition of the photo shows the bathing chairs next to the pool in the foreground on the right, it also shows the plants and their shadows on the roof in the mid ground and finally, the dining area located in the background of the image. The rule of thirds has been considered slightly however, it appears that this image has been divided into more quarters rather than thirds as a horizontal and vertical split is clearly visible. The viewer's eye is lead around the photo because of the composition and perspective Adam Letch has used. The perspective that Adam Letch has taken the photo from is at eye level. This perspective is effective because it demonstrates to the viewer what they'd see if they were to go and view this residence that is being advertised. The photographer employs a range of visual elements in his work. The most striking elements are line, colour, texture, pattern and shape. The element colour can be identified in the capture of the sky and pool, following on from this, shape can be clearly identified in the shapes of the buildings and reflections etc. Media: The photo has been taken from quite a long distance to capture the outside area of the residence however, the image has been slightly cropped to ensure that this beautiful outdoor area remains the main focal point of the image. The photo has been taken using outside natural lighting, this creating the naturally formed highlights and shadows of the image. This creates an atmosphere because of these highlights and shadows which create a sense of serenity it also radiates positive energy. To emulate this photograph myself, I would use my Canon 2000D DSLR camera with the settings for aperture between f8 to f16 for the wide depth of field visible in Adam Letch's work. For my shutter speed, I would use around 1/60 or 1/120 of a second to achieve a clean result and finally, I would set the ISO to auto. For the equipment I would use a tripod and a shutter release cable to ensure stability when taking my shot. I would also require a slightly darker atmosphere outside so perhaps around 3:45pm 4:00pm (winter) this varies depending on the time of year. Additionally, I would also need to research more on Adam Letch's techniques and photography. Intent: I feel for this photo there isn't really a message behind it, it's more about the feelings and moods it portrays. From this image, I get a calm, relaxed feeling due to it's warm colours and tones which are 2 elements of photography. Adam Letch's work is relevant to my project as his work is primarily based on buildings which are part of urban environment. The strengths of this photograph would be the use of the elements and camera

settings. I believe the slight weaknesses of this image would be the lack abstractness I feel this residence could be advertised with a more abstract approach to draw the eye of potential buyers. 9/34

Saul Leiter - Artist Investigation 4 "Photography allows you to learn to look and see. You begin to see things you'd never paid attention to." ~ Saul Leiter Why this quote? I chose this quote from Saul Leiter as his words inspired me. I feel the quote is an influence on others to get into photography and take photographs themselves. It is also a factual quote as photography does make you pay attention to things you'd never really pay much attention to. Why this artist? I chose Saul Leiter as my final fourth artist investigation as his work links well with my urban environment project and it also has an old 1940-50s theme as these were the years he was around in his 20s to 30s. Who is Saul Leiter? Saul Leiter was an American photographer and painter who was born on 3rd December, 1923 and sadly, died on November 26, 2013. His early work of the 1940s-1950s was an important contribution to what came to be recognised as the New York school of photography. Why this image? I chose this image because I like the atmosphere that is created by the technique of shooting through a window which creates reflection. It also reminisces on times of the past and it also links well to my urban environment project.

SEMI Analysis - Saul Leiter Subject: The photographer of this image is called Saul Leiter. The title of this photograph is Reflection and it was taken in 1958. The genre of this photograph is street photography as it discreetly captured the way of life on the streets of New York. The props I can see in this picture are a table and mirrors. Element: The composition of the photo shows the table placed slightly towards the left of the image with a combination of mirrors on the wall that vary in positioning in the image, there is a mirror located on the left, two mirrors located centrally and finally, another mirror located on the right. The rule of thirds has been used to an extent as the mirrors have been captured at an angle. The viewer's eye is lead around the photo because the composition and perspective Saul Leiter has used. The perspective that Saul Leiter has taken the photo from is around eye level. This perspective is effective because it gives the viewer of the photo a sense of what they'd see on the streets of New York or what they'd see looking through this particular window. The photographer employs a range of visual elements in his work. The most striking elements are, shape, space, pattern and colour. This is due to Saul Leiter's clever way of using the levels of tone and black and white filters to give the person's coat an eye catching effect. The use of shapes is exampled by the mirrors and the table. Media: The photo has been taken from a short distance so a clear reflection could be captured. This is so the main focal point of the image is the person captured within the reflection. The photo has been taken using what appears to be natural light whilst the photo has been taken from outside. The light source shines through the window of the building in a particular way to create a highlighted centre which is surrounded by shadows formed on the left and right side of the image, also again creating the reflections. This creates an atmosphere because the shadows form almost a frame that captures the main focal point. To emulate this photograph myself, I would use my DSLR Canon 2000D camera with a tripod attached ensuring the stability and clearness of the photo being taken, I would use the settings 1/60 to 1/80 for the shutter speed and an aperture of f/5.6 to f/8 to achieve the slight intentional blur of the background as there is a wide depth of field. Finally, I would also need to find a window that will result in a good reflection on a clear, possibly cloudy day. Intent: I don't feel this image conveys much of a message as Saul Leiter himself has stated how he avoids to explain what he does and why he does it. However, it does have a sense of positivity by the use of element colour, which is cleverly used with the jacket/ coat of the person being the main focal point. This work of Saul Leiter is relevant to my project as his work is famously known as 'street photography' which links well with urban environment.

I feel that this is one of my 4 best edits because I have

Personally, I believe this one of my best edits as I have

successfully used the duplicating layers technique as I have carefully rotated and reflected these layers to create this image.

successfully experimented with the saturation and temperature of this image, I have also used the zoom blur filter to create a main focal point.

For this edit, I enjoyed the way I used the adjustment tools to create this clean black and white image to which I then used the duplicating layers technique and flipped it horizontally.

When completing this image, I created a cooler temperature in the adjustments I also cropped the image to a good size, then I played about with the radial blur filter with duplicated layers.

Overall Best Edit:

Personally, I feel this is my best edit as it has a great variety of highlights and shadows, it also has many different tones of: greys, blacks, whites and even some slight blues. Furthermore, the way I have used the reflection tool on PIXLR was very effective as it almost gives this photography a meaning. I also enjoyed the fadedness of the reflection as I have changed the opacity of the duplicated layer.

Urban Environment - KEIRA CROSSLEY / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Pedro Correa / Inspired Shoot Plan: For this shoot, I have drawn inspiration from the artist Pedro Correa because I was drawn to his photographic techniques and his clever use of colour within his photography. I plan for this shoot to take place in two different locations, one of those locations being inside looking out from a window of a local public area; the other being outside looking in from a window of again another public area. I have chosen to use these as my two locations as they clearly resemble the work of my chosen artist (Pedro Correa). After further inspection of Pedro Correa's work, I intend to use some props. The props I am going to try and incorporate into my photographs will be ceiling lights, neon lamps/ lights and people of the community because I have learned from looking into many photos of Pedro Correa's work a lot of them include some sort of artificial lighting. When considering lighting as a whole, I will experiment with the both low and high key photography style as this will link well with Pedro Correa's photography as he has a variety of dimmer images and brighter images, I also hope to take some of my shots when it is dark outside to set a cosier scene and mood of the atmosphere of the public area I will be shooting. I would also prefer some of my shots to be taken inside when it is raining to create the rainy window effect used by Pedro Correa is some of his images. When considering equipment, I intend to shoot with my Canon 2000D DSLR camera using my 18-55mm kit lens as none of my photographs are being taken from a far distance. The majority of my shots will also require a tripod for a still, sturdy shot, however, some of Pedro Correa's shots do have a slight blur effect to them. For my camera settings, I will require a mixed amount of exposure levels such as, a higher exposure for darker surroundings and a lower exposure for brighter surroundings. I also want to achieve clear images and so I will be using a fast shutter speed of around 1/120 to 1/125. The depth of field for my images varies so therefore, I plan to use a small aperture of f/11 to f/16 to capture a large DOF and I also plan to use a larger aperture of around f/5 for a shallow DOF. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my photographs using the editing software photoshop and I intend to experiment on the editing software pixlr too. This is to achieve the desired final outcomes that become a clear resemblance of Pedro Correa's photography, however, still have a uniqueness to them which links to myself.

Pedro Correa / Editing Process: Initially, when I opened up my image I wanted to adjust the exposure balance of my picture to get them correct levels of lighting. The lighting itself is subdued because of the time of day and because of the light and lowness within the sky, it casts shadows across the building which I thought was very effective, particularly, on the surface of the floor. I also cropped my image to allow the rule of thirds to work properly and thus gave some areas of visual interest in all aspects of the picture itself. I adjusted the levels to make sure the amount of brightness and darkness was equally balanced, I also added a slight warmth to the temperature of my image. There were some slight adjustments on contrast to add more depth to the darker tones and then finally, I enhanced the vibrancy so that the warm glow of the sun was felt throughout the entire picture. Overall, I fully feel my editing on this image was successful and I was able to capture the glow of this low level lighting, I also managed to keep some of the darker shadows and tones within my work, which I think is essential in emulating work of Pedro Correa.

My Overall Best Edit: verall, I chose this as my best edit because I believe that this O image is the most successful as I feel it has the most resemblance of Pedro Correa's work and I have successfully used his photographic technique enabling me to capture the blurriness of the image through the use of manual focus and capturing the natural overlay from the rain and condensation and when looking at some of Pedro Correa's work, I can see clearly that he does this in some of his photographs. Furthermore, in my edits I have included elements and media similarly to Pedro Correa. However, this edited image also has some weaknesses. Personally, I think I could've lowered the brightness of the sky slightly to make it less intense and to make it comfortable for the viewer's eyes to look at. Finally, I also believe I could have tried to make the image slightly less blurred to capture more detail, making it more interesting for the viewer. Finally, to improve in the future, I will ensure my image is more clear, yet still overlaid with the rain residue on the glass. I will do this to achieve a better presented image inspired by Pedro Correa.

Saul Leiter / Inspired Shoot Plan: To complete this next shoot, I have taken inspiration from the artist Saul Leiter, as I was motivated by his use of vibrant colours, closeup shots and shots of people that almost tell a story. I plan for this shoot to take place in a well populated area potentially somewhere like a city, in order to capture the vibrant colours, people and close-up shots of lively scenery in a similar manner to Saul Leiter. The only props I would really say I require for this shoot, would be the general public as they are vital for some of my photographs. The lighting conditions I would require for this shoot would be natural daylight and I will adjust the white balance on my camera to daylight or cloudy depending on the weather circumstances. When considering the equipment, I will use my 2000D Canon DSLR camera with an 18-55mm kit lens on a tripod, capturing clear, closer range shots. The settings I intend to use are a mid-range exposure for the well-lit shots, a fast shutter speed around 1/120 to 1/125 to achieve the clear shot I want to gain and finally both a small and large aperture enabling me to capture shallow DOF shots and wide DOF shots, the small aperture being around f/16 to f/22 and the large aperture being around f/8 to f/11. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my photographs using the editing software photoshop and I will also experiment on pixlr for my digitally editing to make the correct adjustments to resemble Saul Leiter's work, however, I also may perhaps physically edit a few of my photos to add my own twist onto Saul Leiter's photographic style.

Saul Leiter / Editing Process: I initially cropped my image from Saul Leiter's work focusing on a frame within a picture so you can see I have tried to add in the red frame in the top and also balance that with the red on the left and the bottom of this image, so by cropping carefully, I was able to centralise the yellow within the picture of the mustard and also the yellow taxi in the background. I then deleted aspects of the image that I did not want and then flattened the image. Then, I adjusted the temperature and tint to add to the warmth of the primary colours of yellows and reds within the image, so by adding a slight warmth to my picture I was able to enhance the vivacity of colour and the saturation overall. So predominately now mostly red and yellows yet right in the background behind the taxi there are blues and navy blues and this is intentional so although I have predominately warm colours the blue in the background helps to frame the image and bring forward those yellows, creams and beiges of this diner. Furthermore, I also adjusted the exposure slightly just to ensure the correct levels of light were exceeded within the image. The vibrancy was also adjusted, as was the brightness and contrast and overall, I added to the highlights and shadows so that elements of reflection are created which are then offset by the strong bow colours which is seen throughout the image. Overall,

I feel this image because of the way the colour is balanced harmoniously throughout the picture. The use of warm colours is compelling, yet offset by the cooler and colder colours of the navies and greys visible in the background of this image.

Urban Environment - KEIRA CROSSLEY / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

My Overall Best Edit: ersonally, I feel this is the strongest overall edit from my Saul P Leiter selection. This is due to my capturing of vibrant, bright colours, likewise to Saul Leiter's use of the element colour. Furthermore, I also believe my use of the 50s overlay has taken greatest effect on this edit as it clearly gives off an element of the 50s/60s era more so than the others. Finally, this is my best overall edit, as I have visibly used the technique of fore, mid and background to create a main focal point. Another strength from this edit is, when taking this photograph and editing it digitally, I thought carefully about the composition, this was to ensure it resembled the idea of Saul Leiter's work and clearly showed my inspiration from his photography. Although this edit is an overall strength, there are weaknesses towards it, such as, the slight slanting visible in the background;. To improve this next time, I will use my tripod's leveller to ensure a straight image capture. Moreover, this edit could improve with the lowering of exposure slightly, this is to reduce the overly bright areas of the image. Finally, to improve in the future when focusing on 50s style photography, I will try to include more elements used by artists such as Saul Leiter. I shall do this by paying attention to the details such as colour, shape and tone, I will also look at more photographs from/ based on the 1950s and 60s to gain a better idea of what settings on my camera to use and why.

Composition Design 1 What is the aim for this composition? For this first composition, I am taking inspiration from the German artist Sven Pfrommer who is located in Berlin. I enjoy Pfrommer's work as it largely incorporates bright colours, overlaying and an element of abstract. To complete this composition, I plan to edit some of my pre-existing photographs in the style of this artist using overlaying and some adjustments.

Anyone can shoot chaos. But the most perceptive photographers can make compelling pictures out of uninteresting moments. – Alex Tehrani he best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even T when the people in it do. – Andy Warhol

What techniques do I plan to use for this composition? To achieve the best outcome for this composition, I am going to use a range of techniques and processes. To start off I will use the overlaying technique using my own colourful created overlays. I will also try an incorporate some rotation when editing my photographs. This is all to show off my creative ideas and varied use of media. This is a YouTube video that I will be using as a guide when creating my colourful, varied monoprints to use as overlays. In order to essentially, have an element of Sven Pfrommer's work in my composition photographs.

Digital Editing Processes:

Process Write-up: In order to complete my final pieces for composition 1, I started off by creating colourful backgrounds using a variety of coloured acrylic paint with a paint roller to apply the colours onto a gel plate. Once I had done this, I pressed down my A5 sized pieces of paper onto the gel plate to transfer the different paint designs. After completing the colourful background pieces, I decided to experiment with the heat press to create sublimations. First of all, I printed off my photographs onto special pink sublimation paper. Then I took my colourfully painted pieces of paper and heat pressed my chosen photographs onto them. Finally, to develop my work even further, I decided to digitally edit these final photographic pieces using the editing software PIXLR. From the digital editing process images, you can see how I precisely adjusted the saturation and vibrancy of my photos in order to achieve the style of Sven Pfrommer who is the inspiration behind this composition. Composition Design 2 What is the aim for this composition? For the aim of this composition, I am taking inspiration from British artist Stephen Gill who was born in Bristol, southwest England. I am inspired by Stephen Gill's work because of his creative use of everyday objects incorporated into his photographs. Therefore, to complete this composition I will be making an attempt at involving everyday objects into my edits.

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” – Ansel Adams “There is one thing the photo must contain – the humanity of the moment.” – Robert Frank

What techniques do I plan to use for this composition? To achieve the best looking outcome inspired by Stephen Gill for this composition, I will be experimenting with using a scanner with everyday objects to create clever overlays similar to what Stephen Gill's look like. To begin with, I will be digitally editing my already taken photographs to create the misty/old looking photographs Stephen Gill takes. Then, I will begin collecting some natural/ everyday objects to which I will then scan in as an overlay to add to my edited images. Another way I will be experimenting with is simply printing off my edited images and placing them individually on top of the everyday objects on the scanner. The YouTube video on the left, is an example of what my experiments should turn out like.

Scanned Overlays Inspired By Stephen Gill:

Physical Scanning Process:

For this quick process, I searched the classroom for random everyday objects and placed them on the scanner in a layout I thought would achieve the most success. After doing this, I sent these scans to an SD and downloaded them onto my computer for editing.

Digital Editing Processes:

For the digital editing processes, I adjusted things such as brightness and contrast, exposure and temperature and tint on my scanned overlays. Once I had done this, I edited my images on PIXLR and added the scanned images as overlays.

Final Evaluation: Throughout the process of completing this project, I have developed my understanding of urban environment via the creation of artwork using inspiration from relevant artists linking to the urban environment themes of this project. For the completion of this artwork I have created, I took elements from various inspiring artists and combined them to create my own unique work. To begin initially, I researched the work of Dutch artist Iwan Baan, I really enjoyed the visible elements within his work and the scenery he captured within the snowy regions he scouted and therefore, I took inspiration from his work. When studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of line, shape and texture in my own photography examples. However, I didn’t take my emulations further with this artist. Instead, I took the elements I found visible from Iwan Baan’s work into consideration when researching the artist Pedro Correa as he had similar photographic elements present in his work. When researching the work of Spanish photographer Pedro Correa, I found I was drawn to his work by his creative use of colours and tones which set the mood of the photograph he captures. An example of this, would be the deeper tones of the primary colours red and blue which he purposely captures in dark environments to set a relaxing/ calming mood. Due to the inspiration sparked by his work, I created a series of emulations by travelling to bigger cities like Manchester at night-time to photograph colourful buildings that were ideally suited to fit the colour scheme of Pedro Correa’s work. Whilst doing this, I investigated the technical processes of low-level photography and shooting from a short distance. Pedro Correa’s work helped me understand the theme of urban environment by the clear presentation of city life during day and night hours. After researching the work of Pedro Correa, I briefly researched the artist Adam Letch which gave me further inspiration for this project. I was inspired by Adam Letch’s work due to the cleverly captured photographs featuring elements such as line, colour, texture, pattern and shape which inspired me with my next focus artist Saul Leiter.

Urban Environment - KEIRA CROSSLEY / GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY

During the process of researching the work of American photographer Saul Leiter, I discovered my enjoyment for the 1950s style photography this being due to Saul Leiter being a photographer during that time. I thoroughly enjoyed his capture of vibrant colours and scenery in which he uses to create a positive atmosphere within the photograph. For the duration of studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of colour, shape and tone in my own photography examples. Inspired by Saul Leiter’s work, I decided to create a series of emulations by analysing methods and techniques like those of Saul Leiter and capturing brightly coloured places with 1950s inspired décor. I investigated the technical processes of high-level photography and overlaying to achieve the desired 1950s inspired photographs. Saul Leiter’s work helped me understand the theme of urban environment by revealing the lifestyles of those who lived during his time, and it also demonstrates how urban environment changes as the years pass. After researching these initial artists, I moved onto creating my compositions which are greatly inspired by two urban environmentbased artists. So, to set my first composition off I withdrew inspiration from German artist Sven Pfrommer who is widely known for his use of bright colours when editing to create extremely vibrant, abstract photographs of cities. This inspired me when producing my first composition as I deeply enjoyed the positive moods and feelings his photographs gave off. However, when considering a final piece, I wanted to take my photography to another level by adding a 3-dimensional aspect to it. To do this I took my Sven Pfrommer inspired edited photographs and printed them onto acetate and stuck them down onto clear mini-squares which were later stuck together to make 3-D cubes. To compose my second composition, I took inspiration from the British artist Stephen Gill who inspired me with his use of overlaying in photography. Due to this inspiration, I chose to take his style of overlaying and present with my own photographs. To compose my own overlays inspired by Stephen Gill, I used a scanner and placed my chosen items on it to scan. Once I had done this, I overlayed these scanned images onto my photographs I had taken and edited them using the editing software PIXLR to create a final piece. Overall, I feel the most successful outcome from this project was, my research investigation and emulations of Saul Leiter. I feel these were the most successful edited photographs I had taken as they successfully imitated the work of Saul Leiter due to brightness and contrast of colours, moreover, the slightly over-exposed overcast I have created over the images make it as though they were taken from the time of Saul Leiter. Furthermore, I managed to create a clear subject matter within one of these Saul Leiter style edits which turned out to be a great success. I also managed to capture images with the different viewpoints in mind which enabled the viewer’s eyes travel around my photographs smoothly as there are clear focal points that draw the eye to their direction. A strong point within the editing process would be my use of over layering with a 50s filter I had found off google images to further enhance the whole style of photography I was aiming for. Although, I could have improved my photographs by further developing them by experimenting with a variety of camera lens filters and angles to shoot from. Another successful outcome from this project would be my Stephen Gill inspired edits which I created using previously shot photos. I feel this way because of the physical processes I went through to achieve the desired outcome. However, a limitation to these edits would be the lack of a physical final piece. I believe these edits could’ve been further developed with the idea of paint in mind. For the duration of this project, I found I did experience having some weaknesses. The most recognisable one for me personally would be my Pedro Correa inspired photographs. I feel this way because of the lack of creativity I had when photographing for these shots. From observation, the photographs don’t present Pedro Correa’s work as much as I had anticipated for them to, which is rather disappointing however, there was one slightly more successful edit than the others which did clearly present Pedro Correa’s work. Nonetheless, to improve these photographs overall, I could've improved the actual photoshoots and paid more attention to how Pedro Correa shoots photographs himself, to which I could’ve then used some more variety of techniques. I also could have increased my level of creativity by considering more viewpoints and finding a subject matter to place the focus on. I also believe I should have considered the idea of framing more with these photographs. Finally, I believe these pictures could’ve been quite a lot more successful though I am still pleased with them. The project as a whole, I fully believe was a success due to the amount of knowledge that I learnt from it whilst also gaining further developed abilities to which I achieved by applying the knowledge that I had already learnt from the previous projects into the work I was producing.
