Portrait & Identity Personal Project 2

Personal Projects: Portrait & Identity Definition: Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait photograph may be artistic or clinical. “Within every man and woman, a secret is hidden, and as a photographer, it is my task to reveal it if I can.” Yousuf Karsh

I find this quote inspirational to the project because I want to achieve this in my photography when I do my shoots and I also believe it is true, I want to find out who people really are.

Early Inspirational Images Following the written mind map, I began to investigate portrait photography and identity examples. Below are the findings from this research. I feel the most inspirational image for me is the third image on the first row as it makes me think of mental health as it looks as if her mind is cloudy / foggy which could foreshadow she is thinking negatively or is overthinking something and she doesn't look happy, this potentially shows the true identity and feelings of the girl in the image.

Professional Portraiture Workshop / Collaborative Shoot For prior research we completed a knowledge organiser to see what we knew. We also watched a video on lighting, from this I gained knowledge on different types of lights used for certain effects such as rim lighting which is used to create a glow around the person projecting from the back of them. Mr Dever is a professional freelance photographer who works at my school and in the shoot we did with him, we photographed year 11s for the yearbook as we wanted to take professional shots. To get the perfect shot checked the posture of the sitters and made sure they were smiling. We did this shoot in the afternoon around 12 o'clock so we had natural light coming in through the windows as well as having a light set up which included a rim light, key light and a fill light. We also used a white sheet to get that plain background required for the photographs. We used a 50mm lens to avoid any facial distortion and we also had the lights set to 1/16th power. To take the shot we used an aperture of F/11 and a shutter speed of 1/60 this was to create a shallow depth of field. Due to Covid and the safety regulations the pupils were required to use hand sanitiser before signing in, we all also had to stay socially distanced during this shoot and for safety just in general we had to be aware of the wires so no one would trip over. Moving on to the confidential side of this shoot, we had to cross out the eyes on the contact sheet and we also had to be careful what we named the images, meaning no names just codes. From this shoot, I learned what it was like to be a professional photographer taking school photos and I also had the experience of sitting in the seat to have my photo taken. From this experience, I gained knowledge on how to take a well lit image that has the right exposure and levels.

Professional Photography Workshop / Digital Editing Editing Process To edit the image I went onto PIXLR and started off by cropping the image to a size that follows the rule of thirds. After that, I used the magic wand lasso tool to select the background to apply a blur filter to remove any creases in the sheets (background defects). I also went into a bit more detail by using the clone tool to remove orange highlighter from her hand making the image more clean.

Research And Investigation / Breaking The Rules After gaining knowledge and experience on how a professional shoot is set up in a school setting, I will now look at alternative methods of making portraits, however, these portraits will be breaking the traditional methods / "rules" shown above. I will start off by breaking the first rule, that a portrait must be of a single exposed face.

Research And Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure Double and Multi exposure is the use of two or more images to layer on top of another (this is also commonly known as super imposition) to create a final single image that may have hidden meanings within it. Multi exposure has been around for quite some time now it all started back in the 1860s, when a photographer created the first ever double exposure image to give their business a boost. Multi exposure is of use to us in GCSE Photography as it links to this project of Portrait and Identity it also creates hidden meaning for us to discover and analyse. Image Evaluation This is my first experiment with double exposure, and I think the strengths of this experiment, were the use of the blending tool to make the edges look smoother. I also believe the layering went well as in the end I resulted in a single image that had a double exposure. Finally, I believe the image has a sense of intensity as the branches look quite violent on the face. For next time, I believe the lasso tool could be used more effectively and more adjustments can be made. Furthermore, I could use a different background and increase the opacity and transparency of the image. From the experiment process I learned how to layer images and cut out parts of layers using the cut out mask tool, I also learned how to create a double/multi exposure image. Image Evaluation During this experiment at home, the layering went well as did the use of the cut out mask tool. Moreover, I feel the use adjustments worked well for me when editing the images. To improve next time, I am going to crop my images as I didn't bother cropping any of them as they looked okay to me. Finally, to further improve I am going to add the auto black and white adjustment to achieve a monotonous effect. From this home experiment I learned to choose good images to achieve a crisp finish.

Research and Investigation / Double & Multi Exposure / Christoffer Relander Direct Quote from the artist's website “Reality can be beautiful, but the surreal often absorbs me. Photography to me is a way to express and stimulate my imagination. Nature is simply the world. With alternative and experimental camera techniques I am able to create artworks that otherwise only would be possible through painting or digital manipulation in an external software.” — Christoffer relander Why this artist? I chose Christoffer Relander for this artist investigation because I find his work fasinating and quite exquisite. The way his work draws me as if hidden meanings are calling me to find them. Who is Christoffer Relander? Christoffer Relander is a Finnish photographer who was born in a small town of Ekenäs, near Helsinki, in 1986. He is most famously known for his beautiful multi-exposed pieces. Why the quote? I chose this quote as it came straight from Relander himself and he explains why he takes photographs of nature, as it "absorbs" him. It also imspires me to do the same. Why the video? I simply chose this video as it a nice little slideshow of some of his pieces. It also shows the deeper emotion and meaning hidden in every single photo. How could I emulate his work? To emulate Relander's work I could use a sheet to create a plain white background, I could then take a jar and place it on a table centred in the middle of the white background to take a few shots of. Then, I would need to take a few shots of nature such as trees or maybe flowers. Finally I would need to do the overlaying process in pixlr using the nature shots to create the image of Relander's jar double-exposed piece.

Photographic Technique Christoffer Relander uses a technique of double-exposure to create his photos. Double-exposure is a technique that layers two different exposures on a single image, combining two photographs into one. Double exposure creates a surreal feeling for your photos and the two photographs can work together to convey deep meaning or symbolism.

Best Edit: I feel this is my best edit as it is the most eye-catching out of all the others. This is because of the way I have edited the electricity post through the middle of the main layer (subject matter). I creates a bold effect compared the the other edits as they are all quite similar with the tones and overlay choices. To achieve this edit, I used the same process of steps listed above however, more successfully as my first attempt at this technique was unsuccessful. I believe the use of the paint tool to create a faded effect was successful and to improve next time, I will experiment more to achieve different results.

Artist Investigation / Tommy Ingberg Direct Quote from an artist website “EVEN THOUGH MY WORK NOWADAYS VISUALLY IS MORE RELATED TO PAINTING THAN TRADITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY IT IS STILL IN TERMS OF SOURCE MATERIAL 100% PHOTOGRAPHIC, AND I TRY TO INCORPORATE THAT UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC OF PHOTOGRAPHY INTO MY WORK.” -TOMMY INGBERG

Why this artist? For this artist investigation I chose the aritst Tommy Ingberg. I chose this artist because I was drawn to his style of photography, as it is unique and creative. Who is Tommy Ingberg? Tommy Ingberg is a Swedish conceptual visual artist currently based in Nyköping. He was born in 1980 and is a self-taught photographer who specialises in creating surreal photo montages. Why the quote? The quote is from an artist website that had interviewed Tommy Ingberg and that is what he had told them. The quote inspired me as he explained to them how he tries to incorporate unique characteristics in his work and I believe that makes it special. Why the video? I chose this video as it is just a simple slideshow of some of his work it is quite simple yet effective as it gives us a small idea of what he does and how he presents his photographs. How could I emulate his work? To emulate Tommy Ingberg's work I could take a photograph of a brick wall, I could then take a photograph of someone's face, Finally I could use the editing software pixlr to edit the brick wall over the person's face creating a similar piece to Ingberg's brick face.

Photographic techniques / minimalist / self-reflection Minimalist photography is a form of photography that is distinguished by extreme, austere simplicity. It emphasizes spareness and focuses solely on the smallest number of objects in the composition process. A lot of the time minimalist photography requires a tripod to get that steadiness for a clear, sharp image. Self-reflection photography is often a use of reflective surfaces to create an artistic echo of a scene, however, that is not always the case like with Tommy Ingberg for example he uses selfreflection photography in other ways such as how a person sees themself or how others see them. Self-reflection photography is the same as minimalist photography and requires a tripod, it also requires a remote.

Shoot Plan I have drawn inspiration from Tommy Ingberg because his work is very unique and unusal. I was motivated by Ingberg's use of minimalism and I am drawn to the unaturalness of his work. I intend to shoot indoors and outdoors for this emulation as it requires two images which will then need to be edited together later on, when indoors I will be shooting shots of a person for my subject matter and when outdoors I will simply be taking a shot of a brick wall for my subject matter. I will need to make sure the lighting of the room is controlled by using a range of key, rim, back lights when shooting the images of my first subject matter being the person. Additionally, I will keeping the shadows to a minimum as the piece of work I will be emulating has no shadows in the background. When considering lighting, I will experiment with slightly low-key photography as I feel this best emulates the work of Ingberg, especially the image I will be emulating which is an image from one of his projects known as reality rearranged. For the shoot, I will use a variety of lighting and I will experiment with a remote flash. Adjustments may also have to be made on my camera to increase focus and white balance. When shooting outdoors I will use an f stop of f/8 to f/11. The equipment used, will be a bridge camera, kit lens, remote flash, soft boxes and a tripod. The camera will be set at aperture priority mode so I can experiment with larger apertures for a shallower depth of field as I am mainly just capturing the face and shoulders of my subject matter, I will also be shooting in monochrome as the image being emulated is monotonous. Post shoot, I intend to edit my images using the layers and lasso tool on PIXLR to edit the brick wall on the face of the subject matter. I will be focusing on cropping my images and cutting out the layer of the brick wall, after this process I will focus more on adjustments and other details to clean up the image.

I like how this edit turned out because the blending of the brick on the face was successful.

For this edit, I don't think I positioned the brick on the face very well, as you can slightly see were the eyebrows are.

I don't like how this edit turned out as I didn't blend very well for this one.

This edit could've used just a bit more detail to give a more successful finish.

Research and Investigation / Best Image Tommy Ingberg Best Image Evaluation: This I believe is my best overall image that has been edited, I did this using PIXLR and it has turned out well. I'd say this is a good emulation of my chosen artist's (Tommy Ingberg's) image. However, to improve I could've added further shadows to create depth in the face of my subject matter just like the image being emulated. Identity/Mood is expressed in my image by the brick face which could suggest things such as putting up a wall/front to hide who they really are, or something simple such as having the reference to the saying, "Talking to a brick wall". I feel like mood is quite hidden in this image as no expression is clearly visible.

Shutter Speed Workshops / Long Exposure / Motion Blur / Light Drawing What is Shutter Speed and Blur in Photography? Shutter speed in photography is how long the shutter letting in light is open for. Motion blur in photography is a technique used to create a blurred image. I found with shutter speed and motion blur, that it is best to use a very slow shutter speed to achieve the best blurred image. I also found that moving too much can sometimes look messy and smaller movements is sometimes better. Furthermore, I discovered that you don't actually need to move the camera to create a blurred image this is due to the slow shutter speed that catches physical movement of the body or an object, all whilst the camera is still perhaps on a tripod.

Long exposure in photography is the use of a slow shutter speed to capture moments/elements of an image whilst creating a blurred effect. I found with long exposure that the more you move the less it captures as it is too blurred It is the same with the speed you move such as moving to fast. When moving slower it is still blurred however, you can quite clearly see what is going on, hands for example are still recognisable.

The limitations I found with this image are the little amount I could think to do to edit it. Identity/Mood is portrayed with this edit by what was achieved, which was the disappearing effect. This creates a sort of feeling of loneliness as though the subject matter (myself) blends into the background and isn't really noticed much in a crowd. Or more so a sense of loss of oneself, not really sure who they are or why they're here, almost a sense of confusion.

Photographic Techniques / Motion Blur What is Motion Blur in Portrait Photography? Motion blur in photography is the apparent s treaking of moving objects in a photograph or a sequence of frames, such as a film or animation. I found with motion blur you gain more success when using a high f stop. Using a slow shutter speed also achieves a great image and ideally, the ISO is kept around 100. To create a good blurring effect using a light works well as it shines on the subject matter.

to further emulate the work of Xiong I will use white or black paint to paint over these photographs to create a similar effect she does.

10 images from the artist

Composition 1 What is the aim of this shoot? The aim of this shoot is to portray a sense of entrapment and to achieve this I will try and give off the feeling of anger or distress, e,g physically editing images using paint, negative facial expressions and closed-off body gestures. A further aim, is to make the viewer feel empathy or maybe even sympathy towards the subject matter of the image, through the predominant use of monochromatic photography and low-key lighting effects.

"Once you create a self-justifying storyline, your emotional entrapment within it quadruples." ~ Pema Chodron "The anger. The terror. The feeling of entrapment. the profound distrust of people. The wistful, plaintive conviction that a window, a thing, was more important than she. These feelings and attitudes, expressed in the course of this hour, were symptoms of some profound disturbance." ~ Flora Rheta Schreiber

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 1: For this composition, I want to combine the photographer May Xiong's techniques with the technique of long exposure and overlaying. I want to do this to create a negative dynamic and tell a story with my final piece. I like May Xiong’s creativity when it comes to telling a story using photography. She cleverly uses her skills as a photographer to create emotional atmospheres, by using different media such as, rope, paint and smoke.

Shoot Plan: For this shoot, I have taken inspiration from the artist May Xiong as she creates a variety of emotions through different expressions and gestures. I plan to take photographs with a black and white setting to create a negative dynamic, I am also going to use media such as paint and rope (just like my chosen artist May Xiong) to create scenes of varied emotion resulting in different impacts on the viewer. To achieve this shoot I will be using equipment such as, my DSLR camera (Canon 2000D) with my 18-55mm kit lens, I will also be using a tripod to get still clear shots and finally, I will use the settings, F16-F24 and a slow shutter speed. I intend to shoot indoors potentially by a rainy window to create the desired negative dynamic. When taking my images I will be capturing a variety of shots, some of just the chest, some including the face and finally some involving the arms. I will be experimenting with low-key lighting as negative emotions tend to associate with dimmer, more shadowy tones. My shoot will also be taking place at home. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my images using photoshop to adjust things such as brightness, exposure and vibrancy etc. Furthermore, I will then move onto begin physically editing my final digitally edited image to successfully reach my final composition piece.

Slideshow edit order:

Processes: Edit 1: To achieve this edit I used 2 editing softwares, photoshop and pixlr. When using photoshop, I overlayed 2 of my images from the shoot taken, I did this by opening an image and dragging another one from files on top of it. Then, going into layers, and adjusting the opacity ofthe image dragged on top, I then flattened these images together. Taking this new image over to pixlr, I slightly adjusted the brightness and contrast, I then went into the filter section and used 2 different types of glitch options (scanlines and RGB split) to create a varied effect. Edit 2: For this edit, I opened the image in photoshop to use the adjustments tool, I adjusted things such as; levels, brightness and contrast, curves and highlights and shadows. On pixlr, I used the fringe glitch filter.

Edit 3: I created this edit only using photoshop, I just simply used different tools in the adjustments section. I adjusted the; brightness and contrast, curves, levels and highlights and shadows.

Edit 4: Firstly, I opened up an image taken from my shoot onto photoshop, I then dragged another image also taken from my shoot onto the original image opened, to adjust it's opacity making it less visible than the other. After this, I flattened the two images together. I then adjusted the brightness and contrast, curves and levels of the image. To finish off this edit, I added a slight vignette on pixlr giving that nice final effect.

Edit 5: The processes for this edit took place on photoshop, I did a few adjustments such as; curves and levels. The image itself was achieved using a slow shutter speed which is used for the technique long exposure.

Edit 6: The result of my final edit was achieved usingHOME pixlr. Firstly,COMPONENT I opened up my 1 image I had chosen, I then made sure to double the canvas size making sure it was enough for the image to be duplicated. Once I had done this, I duplicated the image and flipped it creating a reflected effect, I then merged the images together creating just one, this enabling me to use the adjustments tool. Finally, following on from this, I used the glitch filters (RGB split and scanlines) to achieve the final outcome.

Successes and limitations: The successes of these edits were the feelings I believe they achieved, which were the feelings I intended to portray. I also believe the successes of these edits were also the adjustments, I believe I found a good balance whilst editing. The limitations of these edits where the options I had due to my knowledge of the softwares, if I had further knowledge on how to achieve more complex edits I would've gone that extra step.

Composition 2 What is the aim of this shoot? For this shoot, I aim to create an image including light drawing and long exposure to create a fiery atmosphere, giving off a sense of unease. I want to achieve the effect of making someone feel more uncomfortable the more they look at my photograph.

The more you seek the uncomfortable, the more you will become comfortable. Conor McGregor Enjoy the pressure.

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 2: The techniques I will be using for this composition are, light drawing and motion blur. The photographer I took inspiration from is a photographer called Eric Staller who specialises in light drawing and he is in fact actually known as, ' the father of light drawing'. I like the way he uses light to draw around objects to draw them to the eye when his photographs are viewed.

Shoot Plan: I have drawn inspiration from the photographer Eric Staller because in his work he uses the photographic technique light drawing, I like the originality and creativity of his work as he achieves different effects each using light drawing. I plan for this shoot to take place at home indoors due to regular poor weather, I also intend for this shoot to take place when it is dark outside so around 7:00pm. The props I intend to use are a lighter to create flames using the technique used by Eric Staller which is of course light drawing. I further intend to use myself or my cousin as a model to photograph. My shoot is going to be shot using a variety of low-key and natural light, I am going to experiment to find the best outcome. I intend to shoot using my DSLR camera which is a Canon 2000D which will have my 18-55mm kit lens attached, I will also have my camera on a tripod to ensure stable, still images. When considering exposure, I intend to experiment with different shutter speeds to acquire different results in which I will choose the most successful. This is because I want some images to have intentional motion blur and some to have little to no motion blur. When thinking about depth of field, I will use an f stop that achieves a medium to wide depth of field as I want to capture the flames around/behind my model. Finally, I will also have my camera set on night mode. Following the shoot, I plan to do both digital and physical editing to my images to create the desired effect. I will use a lighter to carefully burn the edges of some of my images and I will use the software photoshop to adjust things such as, the vibrancy of the image, the exposure, the levels and possibly the highlights and shadows of my image etc.

Slide show order:

Processes: Edit 1: I achieved this edit using the editing software pixlr. To start off, I opened up my first image and adjusted the brightness and contrast in the adjustments tool section. I then opened up my second image separately to cut out the head of my subject matter, after doing this, I copied and pasted it onto my first image I opened. I duplicated this and flipped it horizontally to create two faces in the background. To finalise this edit, I flattened and darkened the whole image to help the two faces blend into the background, I also used the blend tool to smoothen the rougher cutout edges. Edit 2: For this edit, I opened up the image of my face onto pixlr and adjusted the brightness and contrast, exposure, highlights and shadows and finally, curves. Once I had done this, I opened one of my fire images as a layer, to which I then adjusted the transparency and blend mode of. This created a cool effect of fire going through my eye.

Edit 3: To create this edit, I have taken one of my fire images to which I found a face, so I cropped around the face and adjusted things such as; the brightness and contrast, exposure, curves and highlights and shadows to make it more vibrant and dramatic. The final outcome was created by adding a glitch filter (scanlines).

Edit 4: This edit had a slightly more complex process. First I started off by taking an image of my face and adjusting a few things to lower the brightness of the image. Secondly, I took one of my fire images added it as a layer, adjusted the transparency and cut around my face and hair using the cut-out lasso tool. I then changed the blend mode to screen. Next, I flattened the image and used the blend tool to smoothen out the edges of my face and the fire. Finally, I added another fire image as another layer which I then magnetically lassoed around to cut out the extra fire around my face, this leaving a fiery effect on my face. Once I had achieved this effect, I adjusted the transparency to make it slightly less visible on my face.

Edit 5: To achieve this edit, I used the overlaying technique a few HOME we learned COMPONENT 1 months ago except I did the inverse selection, meaning, I used fire as a background around my subject matter instead of fire being on my subject matter. I also adjusted the brightness and contrast of the image to create the final darker effect.

Edit 6: For my final edit, I used the overlaying technique, the first overlay I did was with fire to create a fiery effect on my subject matter, I then did another overlay using the face discovered in the other fire image to almost blend the fire face and the subject matter's face together, I also changed the blend mode to difference on this layer to get the blue/purple

Further editing: I am going to further edit some of my final outcomes by printing them off and burning the edges, I will get the images printed on gloss paper in school to give them a more professional finish. Successes and limitations: Personally, I didn't like these edits as much as I wanted to, especially the last one. The limitations to them were my lack of ideas on how to edit them, I also wasn't sure how to express my intentions when it came to putting them into an actual image. However, the successes of these edits were the few I managed to express my intentions with such as edits 1,2 and 4.

Composition 3 What is the aim of this shoot? The aim of this shoot is to create a positive atmosphere with the positive emotions, happiness freedom and calmness attached to it. I want to do this to make the viewer of my image gain a sense of happiness or even curiosity, just to make them smile, especially, if they've had a bad day.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results. Willie Nelson It's a wonderful thing to be optimistic. It keeps you healthy and it keeps you resilient. Daniel Kahneman

What photographer and what technique do you want to combine for Composition 3: For this composition, I gained inspiration from the photographer William Eggleston's work. He captures both bright and dull colours in his photography, however, I will be taking ideas from the brightly coloured photographs for this composition. William Eggleston had a variety of techniques for each of his photos, one in this case was dye transfer processing. The techniques I will be attempting to combine for this composition, however, are shooting in colour and saturating very to be extremely bright.

Shoot Plan: For this shoot I have drawn inspiration from the photographer William Eggleston because he uses a variety of bright colours and techniques to achieve his images, such as dye transfer processing. I plan for this shoot to take place at home experimenting with various techniques to create colourful effects. I intend to shoot using UV face paint as they are create a very bright effect when shone under a certain type of light. The props I intend to use are anything that is brightly coloured, this is because Eggleston tends to use brightly coloured props to achieve the sense of positivity in most of his images. The lighting conditions I require are artificial. Furthermore, I will also be experimenting using high-key lighting photography to gain a well lit scene. I will also adjust settings on my camera to match my lighting conditions. I intend to shoot with my DSLR Canon 2000D camera and my 18-55mm kit lens. When considering exposure, I intend to shoot with a fast shutter speed to capture live actions and real emotions. I intend to use a small aperture somewhere around f/3.5 to f/4.5 for a shallow depth of field and I will also experiment with a higher f-stop for example, f/20 to experiment with a larger depth of field. I plan to use a fast shutter speed to capture the whole scene clearly. Following the shoot, I plan to digitally edit my images using the editing software photoshop or pixlr. This is to gain the best final result for this composition.

Slideshow order:

Processes: Edit 1: To complete this edit, I used the editing software pixlr. To start off I adjusted things such as; the brightness and contrast, exposure, curves, levels and highlights and shadows. After doing this, I used the clone tool to cover a few blemishes on my face. Next, I took one of my other images from the shoot and added it as a layer. I then adjusted the transparency of this image and changed the blend mode to hard-light, flattened the image and then added scanlines from the glitch filter section. To finalise this edit, I cut around an image of my cat using the lasso tool. I moved this cut out to the corner of the image and flattened it once again, I then used the blend tool to smoothen the areas around my cat cut out.

Edit 2: For this edit, I began with cropping my image and using the clone tool to reduce the amount of blemishes. I then slightly adjusted the brightness and contrast in the adjustments tool option. Then, I added another image from my shoot as a layer, adjusted the transparency to 45 and changed the blend mode to lighten which gave off this final green tint. To finish off I simply flattened the image to merge both layers.

Edit 3: To achieve this edit, I opened up two images separately. For the second image opened, I cropped it to a fitting size for later on when I combine it to the first image. I also used the adjustments tool to adjust the exposure. Once this had been done, I copied this image and pasted it onto my first opened image. I then, cut around the head of my subject matter to make it fit with the first image. After doing this, I flattened the image, merging the layers together. Finally, I used the blend tool to smoothen areas around the cut out layer and adjusted things such as; brightness and contrast and highlights and shadows. Edit 4: To create this edit, I opened my image and began adjusting the vibrance, highlights and shadows, curves and exposure. When this was done, I added the fringe glitch filter and adjusted the settings until I gained the blue effect around my subject matter. Finally, to finish off I slightly cropped my image. Edit 5: To result with this edit, I started with adjusting the brightness and contrast, highlights and shadows, curves, levels and exposure. After this, I added a glitch from the filter section (RGB split). Then, I added another image from my shoot and adjusted the transparency to 50. Finally, I changed the blend mode to lighten and flattened the image

Edit 6: For this final edit, I adjusted the vibrance and added a vignette, then I adjusted the image further using curves. Once I had done this, I added an image from my shoot as a layer and changed the transparency to 40. To finalise this edit, I changed the blend mode to lighten, added interference using the glitch filter and flattened the image, merging the layers.

Successes and limitations: I believe the successes of these edits were the final results, I like how they turned out, I also believe I got the adjustments just right. The limitations to these edits in my opinion, are the way they represent my intentions. I don't really know if every edit represents what I intended to represent.

Final Evaluation Throughout this project, I have developed my understanding of portrait & identity by emulating and creating my own pieces of work, using the inspiration of multiple artists. I believe I have gained the knowledge and understanding of the key elements of art and principles of design throughout this project, as I have consistently practiced capturing elements such as: line, shape, texture, tone, colour, space and movement. Furthermore, I have also gained skills by using unfamiliar equipment, for example, a shutter release cable and a remote flash. During this project I gained further experience using my new camera, which is a DLSR Canon 2000D camera, this has resulted in me achieving a great skill in capturing clean captures. Initially, I researched the work of an artist named Christoffer Relander. I used this artist’s work for my first artist investigation, as he greatly inspired me with his use of the photography technique, double-exposure. Personally, I really enjoyed the way he used this technique to tell stories and create hidden messages within his photographs. Through studying this artist, I was able to explore concepts of shape, contrast and tone in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by going out onto a field and capturing shots of trees and flowers, I then combined these images with photographs previously taken of my friends’ faces, using a DSLR camera. I investigated the technical processes of using the cut-out tool, using various adjustment tools such as, saturation. I also experimented with the magic wand tool and transparency of images to get that double-exposure effect. Their work helped me understand the theme of portrait & identity by using double exposure as for example, when he used a face and overlayed it onto a silhouette of a man with a cap on, doing this almost revealed a backstory. Secondly, as the project developed further, I researched the work of artist Tommy Ingberg. I used this artist’s work as my next artist investigation as he had an unusual style of photography, which inspired me as it revealed to me that all identities are different, and some can be maybe categorised as ‘unusual’ or ‘weird’. Throughout my study of this artist, I was able to explore concepts of tone, line and space in my own photography examples. Inspired by their work, I created a series of emulations by taking photographs of a brick wall and my dad’s face as he stood against a plain white wall, I did this using a DSLR camera. After doing this, I investigated the technical processes of using the adjustments section on the editing site, PIXLR to adjust the saturation and tone of the image. I then, also experimented with using a sepia tone to achieve the slight brown tones Tommy Ingberg creates. Their work helped me understand the theme of portrait & identity as they showed uniqueness in their work. Tommy Ingberg also has a sense of great creativity to inculpate the theme of identity. Finally, to finish off all the artist investigating, I researched the work of the artist May Xiong. The thing that inspired me about her work was the clever use of paint to physically edit her photographs. Throughout studying May Xiong’s work, I was able to explore the concepts of line, colour and shape in my own photography examples. Inspired by May Xiong’s work, I created my own physical edits using various photographs of my own. By doing this, I investigated the technical processes of using paint to create different effects and portray different emotions. Lastly, their work helped me understand the theme of portrait and identity as the way she used paint created almost a cage around her subject matter, which could potentially reveal a sense of possible mental health. Overall, I feel my most successful outcome from this project must be my final finishing piece this is because it finalised and brought this project together as a whole. The key skills used to achieve my final piece were the use of lighting and colour to portray the desired emotions/feelings. Moreover, I feel my research played a major part in my success as it led to me being well prepared and it also showed my clear understanding if the chosen artists. Finally, the composition of my final piece was well laid out and clearly evidenced the use of depth of field and symmetry. To improve for the future and overcome the weaknesses, I will practise more with settings on my camera to gain a further confidence in using my camera manually. Additionally, I will improve my digital and physical editing skills. Finally, I plan to improve photo shoots by enhancing more creativity and originality into them.
