We enlighten and inspire by sharing the stories of creative expression to provide opportunity for all generations to reach their full creative potential.

From the President

Coming out of the two year pandemic, The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience (The MAX) has realized a steadily rising level of on site program attendance and visitors to the museum. Many new skills that helped us continue to meet our mission are still utilized. The MAX presented a robust series of public programs and exhibitions throughout the fiscal year 2021 2022, with an emphasis on three activities: (1) changing exhibitions, (2) educational programs focused on the "hero" identified in the strategic planning process as K 12 students, and (3) adult education studio courses and teacher training and support. We presented numerous performing arts programs, including the Maxie's Juke Joint Blues Series, a popular program bringing high quality blues in an accessible, entertaining, and engaging educational context. We also hosted a noteworthy series of Illustrated Talks (lectures) by noted scholars and artists from Mississippi and the United States.

The MAX experienced the return of school field trips and relaunched youth activities such as the recording studio workshops, weekly toddler programs, family films, and First Saturdays family programs. We realized the principal outcome of regaining connections with our audience through high quality programs. This included local constituents who have visited on at least one occasion living within a one hour radius of The MAX. We assessed the outcomes by using quantitative measures, such as the number of visitors compared to previous years, and qualitative measures, such as visitor feedback, exit interviews, and online surveys.

In addition to the planned exhibitions, lectures, performances, and classes, we presented our second annual "edutainment" fundraiser Sipp & Savor a food and drink experience hosting 19 award winning chefs. Foodways and the culinary arts are a significant part of our exhibition content.

During fiscal year 2021 2022, we continued a sophisticated streaming program through MAXLive.org. The MAX presented nine monthly brown bag concerts, lectures, artist demonstrations, and youth performances. Practically every public program was streamed or recorded and can be viewed on a new web landing page MAXLive.org and our YouTube channel. Analytics revealed that 60 percent of people reached were in Mississippi, and 40 percent were from out of state. That breakdown is 35 percent local (Lauderdale County) with the remaining 65 percent from cities around the state. Five percent of the total came from countries outside the United States, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Italy, Mexico, India, and Chile.

Finally, practically everything we do at The MAX of significance is in partnership with others. Our partners are extensions of us our mission and our vision. The MAX is an essential partner with other cultural and civic organizations throughout East Central Mississippi and the entire state.

Programs

Ten students from Mississippi high schools started their summer with a weeklong immersion in the music industry through the second annual Sound of Success program at The MAX. At their commencement, they showed off their talents at a June concert in the museum's courtyard.

The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience offers Sound of Success each year to high school juniors and seniors in nearby counties. Participants learned about the mechanisms of the music industry from such professionals as Philadelphia, Mississippi, native Marty Gamblin, a longtime artist manager, promoter, and booking agent, and Meridian's Todd Tilghman, winner in 2020 of the national TV singing competition The Voice.

To participate in the program, students needed a teacher's recommendation. From guitarists and pianists to vocalists and lyricists, musicians of all kinds and from varying musical backgrounds applied to develop their skills.

During the May 31 June 4 program, guest speakers shared candid insights into the music industry and outlined many different pathways students could follow to achieve their dreams. Students heard multiple and sometimes differing views about the business. Tilghman credited his success to his faith and happenstance. College admissions counselors presented academic approaches to achievement.

Regardless of method, students heard again and again that hard work and dedication are essential. Students also had the opportunity to write and perform their original songs. During workshop sessions, they shared interests and ideas with their peers and supported each other's aspirations.

Attendance

The MAX has served over 100,000 visitors since its opening in April 2018. After being forced to close our doors due to the global pandemic on March 13, 2020, this past year, we saw the return of facility rentals, school tours, and motor coach tours, with our largest bookings since the pandemic just ahead of us this fall. Between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, The MAX served 20,188 visitors through exhibitions, programs, events, field trips, and several educational initiatives.

School field trips, national motor coach visitors, art classes, and live music performances are attracting broad attention once again, as the museum’s leadership, in line with strategic planning, gives close attention to the needs and aspirations of young people.

A redesigned website and social media initiatives highlight longstanding assets such as immersive exhibits and new programs and events. Next fiscal year, an intensive summer music program titled “Sound of Success” will be reprised in June with an added program titled “Write for Success,” focusing on writing skills and the publishing industry.

Through its ever changing programs and advocacy for arts education, The MAX is playing a central role in strengthening Meridian’s cultural economy. Local partners in this broad mission include the newly opened Threefoot Hotel, the Meridian branch of the Mississippi Children’s Museum, the MSU Riley Center performing arts complex, and other attractions.

Among various examples of local collaboration, The MAX hosted a gospel brunch as part of this year’s Jimmie Rodgers Festival and offered a special invitation for a visit to the museum’s galleries to participants in a preservation conference held at the Riley Center. Also, The MAX served as the venue for Juneteenth music and lecture events recalling powerful influences from the slavery and Civil War era, activities that resonated in the African American community and among local educators.

The past fiscal year has seen new efforts by The MAX and its supporters drawing vital support from a statewide Board of Directors to strengthen partnerships across the state, navigating obstacles posed by pandemic restrictions. A promotional and networking tour in fall 2021 included visits to Columbus, Oxford, Cleveland, Greenwood, and Natchez, each with unique contributions to the Mississippi arts story, and The MAX has strengthened connections at state tourism and arts conferences.

Attendance at the 2022 festival totaled 1,726, marking a 24 percent increase from Sipp & Savor in spring 2021. The festival is supported by dozens of corporate and individual sponsors and raises $165,726 for MAX education programs. Hopes are high that Sipp & Savor will become one of the region’s leading cultural events in the future.

Attendance continued

Sipp & Savor is a year round sustained effort by the museum’s staff, and a volunteer committee. The festival features celebrity chefs, signature drinks, live music, and community socializing. Student volunteers from six culinary training programs in Mississippi obtain vital experience and professional contacts during the event. Five students received industry jobs as a result of their involvement.

The MAX receives additional support for operations and capital improvements through a local 2 percent prepared food and beverage tax. The museum also benefits from major ongoing grant support provided by the Phil Hardin Foundation and The Riley Foundation. The City of Meridian and Lauderdale County provide additional grants to help offset operational costs, while a combination of foundations, companies, and individuals furnish other grants and donations. We also enjoy the generous operations support from the Mississippi Arts Commission and program support from the Mississippi Humanities Council.
