as the planning department considered the application incomplete without acquiring adjacent land for parking, referred to as the uplands. Mayor Ted Adlem moved that the previous CD-21 zone for the foreshore area of McBarge be rescinded of first and second reading, so that the new incarnation, CD-23 zone, could pass first and second reading and proceed to public hear-

ing, now slated for Jan. 30. Adlem said during question period Monday evening that even if the foreshore zoning is approved, a second zoning application and public hearing would still be needed for the uplands. That would require the developer, Howard Meakin, to See DECISION Page 3

Cherry Hill store robbed again Police are asking for the public’s help following the second gun-point robbery in as many weeks at a Cherry Hill store. Two males entered the store just before 6:30 p.m. Jan. 2, with one male holding a gun and demanding a customer lie on the floor. The gunman reached over the counter and took money from the cash register while the second man stayed outside as a lookout. Both suspects then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. The male who entered

the store is described as six feet tall, wearing a black balaclava, and black cotton sweater. The second male can only be described as wearing a black hoodie with what appeared to be a white shirt pulled up over his face. The Lower Mainland District Police Dog Service assisted with a search of the area and surveillance tapes have been analyzed but RCMP have no suspects. “It is unknown if these two males are the same suspects responsible for a previous robbery with a

gun at Cherry Hill Store,” said Mission RCMP’s Cpl. Sharon Siluch. Nobody was injured in either robbery and no shots were fired. A similar robbery took place just before 10 p.m. on Dec. 18, with two men of similar description employing the same technique of gunman and lookout. The police are urging everyone with information on this crime or any crime to contact the Mission detachment at 604-826-7161 or call Crimestoppers at 1-800222-TIPS (8477).

Fine levied against former financial adviser BY VIKKI HOPES Black Press

A former Mission resident who worked as a financial adviser in Abbotsford has been permanently banned from conducting “securitiesrelated business” and ordered to pay a $75,000 fine and $10,000 in costs. The ruling was made last Thursday against Michael Labrick Harvey by the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA) of Canada following a disciplinary hearing for which Harvey did not show up. The three-person panel ruled that Harvey failed to co-operate with an investigation by the MFDA, despite repeated requests for an interview, starting in May 2010. According to the MFDA “notice of hearing” from August 2011, 19

cclients issued 12 compplaints about Harvey’s cconduct as a mutual ffund salesperson. He was employed iin Abbotsford by the IInvestors Group FiHarvey nancial Services Inc. from 2005 to 2008 and Canaccord Capital Corporation from 2008 until he resigned in February 2010. The complaints allege that Harvey made “unsuitable leveraging recommendations,” falsified client signatures and initials, and falsified information on account documents between December 2006 and September 2008. Leveraging involves the borrowing of capital to increase the potential return of an investment.

The clients also allege that Harvey failed to inform them that mutual funds bought for their accounts had been purchased on a “deferred sales charge,” resulting in their incurring substantial fees when the investments were redeemed. In one complaint detailed by the MFDA, a client alleged that some of the signatures and initials on documents in his file were not his, his listed income had been inflated, and his risk tolerance had been listed as “high” when it should have been “medium.” In another case, a couple who had invested $300,000 in a leveraging plan lost $105,000, and alleged that Harvey had made unsuitable recommendations and had not explained the associated financial risks. They also alleged that their signa-

tures and/or initials had been falsified on 16 documents in their file, personal income had been inflated, and their risk tolerance was incorrectly recorded as “high.” The complaints were first addressed by Investors Group, which found sufficient evidence to back the clients. “As a result, Investors Group unwound the leverage loans and investments of those clients at its own expense, among other measures,” stated the MFDA documents. The agency then began its own investigation and concluded that Harvey had falsified client signatures or initials on at least 67 documents and provided false information to ensure the proper requirements were meant and his recommendations were approved. In a written response to MFDA

in early 2009, Harvey denied any wrongdoing and stated the complaints were a “calculated and malicious attack on my professional reputation and a manipulation of my clients by Investors Group in response to my decision to move to Canaccord.” Harvey had no further contact with the MFDA, whose letters sent to him were returned “unclaimed.” During his time in Abbotsford and Mission, Harvey’s community involvement included the Rotary Club of Mission, the United Way of the Fraser Valley and the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce. He also wrote a financial advice column for a community newspaper. He is now believed to be residing in White Rock. Contact information for him could not be found.

either acquire or come to an agreement with the present landowner for the 0.67 hectares at the former Meeker Cedar Mill site. The whole project had become a chicken-egg paradox, since Meakin was reportedly reluctant to acquire the land

without approval of the project, while the district would not approve the project without a land use plan for parking. During question period former councillor Mike Scudder, who presided over the first application for McBarge, asked whether staff in the planning department have since changed

their opinion that the project was considered incomplete. But Chief Administrative Officer Glen Robertson was quick to say it wouldn’t be fair to ask staff to provide an opinion. “One of the things we promised very loudly is that [McBarge] would go to public hearing,” said Adlem.

Coun. Larry Nundal added that staff are paid to make recommendations, but ultimately decisions are made by the council. “The bottom line is we made a decision. There will be a public hearing,” he said. McBarge is currently moored east of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge in Burrard Inlet.

A core services review task force aimed at finding savings of up to 10 per cent of departmental expenditures for the municipality moved forward Monday evening as council finalized its terms of reference. The core services review was part of the new council’s electoral platform, and will be overseen by Mayor Ted Adlem and Couns. Jeff Jewell, Nelson Tilbury, and Larry Nundal. Although a politically neutral background and objectives was provided for the terms of reference, Jewell moved that it be amended to explain more explicitly the reasons for the review. “All of the newly elected Council ran as members of the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG), pledging to hold the line on spending and taxes, and promising to conduct a Core Services Review as a guide to achieving tax relief and financial sustainability,” reads an excerpt. This initially raised an objection from Coun. Jenny Stevens, who said it was an unnecessary political statement. “I don’t think we have to reiterate what we’ve been saying in this setting,” she said. But Coun. Dave Hensman disagreed, saying, “People have a tendency to forget things and it’s good to remind folks why we’re doing this.” Despite Stevens’ comments, the motion to amend the text to include CRMG in the terms of reference was approved unanimously. The core services review is expected to take six months to complete. Finance director Ken Bjorgaard said in a telephone interview that no estimate on the cost of a core services review is yet available, but more information will be provided at the Jan. 23 regular council meeting. Similar undertakings in other communities have cost more than $70,000.

Legal issues with B.C.’s new drinking and driving law didn’t slow

down police road checks and suspensions during the holiday season. From Nov. 1 to Jan. 2, RCMP in the Lower Mainland imposed

penalties on 399 drivers, compared to 310 in the same period of 2010. Those totals include impaired driving charges, 90-day vehicle

impoundments and administrative licence suspensions. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Jon Sigurdson ruled Nov. 30 that parts of B.C.’s new roadside penalty system infringed on drivers’ constitutional right to defend themselves. But just before Christmas he suspended his ruling for six months, allowing police to resume applying their strictest roadside penalties, including 90-day licence suspensions and impounding vehicles for 30 days. Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond has vowed to move quickly when the legislature resumes sitting in February, to amend the legislation passed last year that gave police in B.C. the toughest roadside impaired penalties in Canada. RCMP Superintendent Norm Gaumont said some people may have been confused by the court ruling, believing that they could refuse to blow in a breathalyzer without facing a criminal code charge. The judge upheld the use of the immediate three-day roadside prohibitions for drivers who blow in the “warn” range between 0.05 and 0.08, and found 90-day suspensions for refusing to give a breath sample area also permissible. “We’re not backing off,” Gaumont said. Bond said the first year of the new penalties resulted in a 40 per cent decrease in alcohol-related deaths on B.C. roads.

Fewer ORN rides recorded The regional statistics for Operation Red Nose, which wrapped up New Year’s eve, have been released, and showed fewer people relied on the service in Abbotsford-Mission than last year. A total of 798 safe rides for intoxicated drivers were provided between Nov. 26 and Jan. 1, the fourth highest total in the province, down from 842 total rides in 2010. But on New Year’s eve, ORN Abbotsford-Mission provided 152 rides, just one shy of the previous year. Regional coordinator Christine Scott attributed this year’s success to volunteers on both sides of the Fraser River, averaging between five to nine (the maximum) nights

per volunteer. Scott said one standout volunteer was Mission resident Lisa Craig. “She worked seven nights at headquarters as a dispatcher, a very demanding position. She would often stay until the last road team returned to headquarters (approximately 4:30-5 a.m.) each night,” said Scott. Craig and her brother, Abbotsford’s Robert Redekop, joined ORN in 2010 when they volunteered all nine nights. The national safe ride program is organized across eight provinces. Throughout Canada, 58,683 volunteers contributed this season to provide 85,926 rides.

Maple Ridge’s MP Randy Kamp spent more than the B.C. average and more than the national average for Members of Parliament, according to expenditure reports on the Parliament of Canada website. Kamp spent a total of $493,278 for staffing his office and travel to Ottawa. That compares to an average of $487,012 spent by B.C. MPs. However, given the amounts involved, the increase is only marginal, 1.3 per cent above the average, or another $6,266.

Kamp is parliam mentary secretary tto Fisheries Ministter Keith Ashfield aand is the departm ment’s main reprresentative on the Kamp W West Coast. The Canadian average for MPs, because of shorter travel distances, is even lower at $432,937. The figures are for the fiscal year ending March 31, and preceding last May’s federal election. Kamp also spent the secondmost of B.C. MPs on pamphlets called “10 percenters” — leaflets

mailed out to voters. Called 10 percenters because the quantity produced must not exceed 10 per cent of the households in a riding, MPs can produce as many of them as they want as long as the content is substantially different each time. Kamp spent $43,043 on those pamphlets, second only to Nina Grewal, who spent more than any other MP in the province on the flyers — $47,910. In the previous year, when there was no election, Kamp spent $73,898 on 10-percenters. His total expenses that year were even higher, $553,462.

Welcomed change The anti-sexual-harassment stance taken by new Assistant Commissioner Craig Callens — head of the RCMP in B.C. — is a welcome indication that winds of change are sweeping through the force. Late last year, when B.C. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Catherine Galliford shared her own allegations of being harassed by male colleagues, it was the cue for a series of similar allegations from other female officers. Callens, RCMP E Division commander, is quick to say most female officers he has heard from have had a positive experience in the force. But when an officer as highly placed as Callens says he is “not persuaded” the force has responded fully or quickly enough to allegations of sexual harassment — and that “one case is too many” — it’s a telling statement indeed. Callens has also sent a message he is prepared to make changes to the culture of the RCMP, both by making sure officers who allege harassment are able to report it without fear of retribution, and by suggesting he will be taking a close look at the actions of immediate superiors of complaining officers to make sure incidents are not swept under the carpet. He is, of course, engaged in his own damage-control mission — to rebuild public confidence in the force. As he notes, most officers do an exceptional job, but large organizations such as the RCMP can’t afford to ignore public perceptions, even if they prove — by and large — erroneous. The sense that an organization can close ranks and refuse to acknowledge wrongdoing undermines every bit of valuable work such an organization does. Loss of confidence is a poison that can eat away at the fabric of any organization in which the public reposits its trust. - Peace Arch News

Progress Board served B.C. well How is B.C.’s economy doing? This question occupies a great deal of time in our political debate. But since that debate is mostly an exercise in selecting facts and passing blame back and forth, it’s difficult to tell. Former premier Gordon Campbell set out to change that in 2001 with the establishment of the B.C. Progress Board. Independent directors established six “core targets,” environmental, health and social indicators as well as economic measures, and tracked them annually with comparisons to other provinces. This created a 10-year database that doesn’t exist anywhere else. But it hasn’t exactly been flattering, a sign that it has been kept free of political interference. Premier Christy Clark’s recent decision to replace the Progress Board has sparked another round of political blame-storming. The NDP opposition was accustomed to jumping on the annual rankings and trumpeting the ones that cast the B.C. Liberals in a bad light. Predictably, they portrayed the

remake of the board as an effort to sweep embarrassing results under the rug. The key flaw with the Progress Board turned out to be its emphasis on provincial rankings. B.C. ranked first for the entire 10 years in health and environmental conditions, and near the bottom in a complex measure of “social condition” that was often oversimplified as poverty. In most measures, including economic ones, the rankings barely changed in a decade. In his final report, board chair Gerry Martin noted To that B.C.’s improvements in economic output and income were significant, but didn’t move them up the rankings because other provinces had similar success. Big recoveries in Saskatchewan and Newfoundland meant that B.C. sometimes slipped in the relative rankings despite major gains. Martin noted that on crime,

“initial performance was so poor that B.C.’s best-incountry improvements over several years were needed just to move B.C. to about average.” Crime is part of the board’s “Social Condition Index,” along with low-birth-weight babies and long-term unemployment. This has been a favourite of opposition critics, because B.C. started low and slipped lower. But they won’t tell you the whole story, through the NDP 1990s as well as the B.C. Liberal 2000s: “B.C. ranked m sixth in the Social Condition Index in 1990, improved to third in 1993, but deteriorated through the rest of the 1990s and into the next decade such that it sank to last place for 2001 and 2002,” the final report says. “Improvements between 2002 and 2007 saw B.C. reach fifth place in 2006 and 2007, but rank changes on

low birth weights and longterm unemployment brought B.C. to seventh in 2008 and ninth in 2009.” Does this mean the NDP government of the 1990s did a bad job, or that the B.C. Liberals did better and then screwed up? It could be spun that way, but there are external factors involved. The B.C. Progress Board didn’t just do rankings. Its policy suggestions were implemented in regulatory reform, energy self-sufficiency, creating community courts and UBC Okanagan, and proceeding with the Site C dam. Martin notes that the successor organization, the Jobs and Investment Board, will carry on the performance monitoring and “hold government’s feet to the fire,” in particular on its ability to attract investment. YOUR VIEWS Let the good work continue in Mission’s public schools Editor, The Record: Open letter to school board trustees: Congratulations on your appointments to the Mission School Board in the fall election. I attended the meetings, read your literature, and made an informed decision when I voted. I became involved in the Parent Advisory Committee at ESR when my children were in elementary school — holding the positions of secretary and chair. As my children moved on to high school I held the position of PAC chair at Mission secondary for three years. I was also involved with BCCPAC’s Parent Leadership Information Co-ordinator program. I was the recipient of the Sheryl Samodian Parent Volunteer Award. I understand the public

school system and I have developed relationships with everyone within the school community. I have been amazed at the work, time and energy everyone puts into the youth of Mission. I have attended meetings where the board has had to make the difficult decisions regarding school closures, busing fees, the changing of school boundaries, etc. Whether I agreed with them or not, the tough decisions have to be made, and I know these decisions were not made lightly. The previous board members from the past two elections — Karen Petty, Carol Hamilton, Pam Alexis, Randy Cairns, Shelley Clarkson, and then Cindy Miller — had the difficult challenge of turning around a negative school

community image that Mission faced just eight years ago. The business of graduating students was on the backburner as discord mounted between the previous superintendent, the unions, and the parent community. As the new board members (named above) learned about their new roles as trustees, about what they can and cannot do within the School Act, a new superintendent, Frank Dunham, was appointed. Slowly over time, another election, and a tough economic climate, Cairns, Hamilton, Petty, Miller, and Alexis, worked together with the Administration of Mission Public Schools. They achieved what other trustees and administration staff failed to do — they put every

single student in the district first on their list of priorities. The respect the trustees (named above) and administration had for each other was evident from an observer’s point of view, and they all got down to the business of making the best decisions on behalf of the parents and students. For all intents and purposes, they succeeded in creating a positive school district environment where our children and teenagers could thrive and learn. With a new year beginning, and moving forward, it is my hope that the trustees and the administration continue to work together, respect each other, and put the students in the district first, as they have done so for the past eight years. Municipality should re-visit two-tree policy Editor, The Record: As a new taxpaying Cedar Valley resident, I am passionate about my new hometown and want it to be the best possible place in which to live. What measures are in place to ensure that development in the Cedar Valley area will be keeping with the harmonization of the surrounding area when you allow developers to clear cut everything? A two-tree replacement policy per lot is woefully inadequate. Look at the recently stripped parcels of land on Cedar by Egglestone and further east along Egglestone — there’s not a single piece of habitat, vegetation or tree left in place. I moved from Surrey to Mission because I was attracted by Mission’s laid-back, quiet charm,

its rich, beautiful backdrops of landscape and greenery, and it was far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Now, it seems that the council and planning department are set to turn this beautiful part of Mission into a high-density Coquitlam hillside you see when driving over the Port Mann Bridge. What an eyesore. Shouldn’t planning be working with developers to ensure that environmental impacts are minimized and protected rather than completely stripped bare? Is this the legacy we are leaving for future Mission generations? Interestingly, the Dec. 22 edition of The Mission Record contained an article about the downtown area suffering from the lack of development and that more

needs to be done. Seems to me that council and staff are focusing their efforts on the wrong part of town. Rather than have acres of highdensity developments in Cedar Valley, how about marketing it to wealthy folks who would love to have big land estates which would not necessitate the massive chopping of trees and, thus, preserve more habitat. High-density townhome/condo development would be more viable in the downtown core which needs an influx of downtown residents who would be more apt to frequent the many restaurants, shops and amenities in walking distance and encourages downtown business growth. Despite disaster in last Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s federal election, local Liberals say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be back to fight another day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the Conservatives are going to have a tougher time with us this time, compared to last time,â&#x20AC;? Brian Rice, president of the Pitt Meadows-Maple RidgeMission Federal Liberal Riding Association said last week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the results of May 2nd were a pretty effective wake-up call.â&#x20AC;? People are signing up and donating to the cause, he says. The local branch of the party now has about 60 members, about 10 more than before the election, while it also finished the campaign with a few thousand dollars in the bank. Rice was commenting following a recent town hall meeting on the future of small-l liberalism. The meeting drew about 25 people at the

Maple Ridge library. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a lot of energy, a lot of passion. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be a real wild four years in Canadian politics.â&#x20AC;? The Liberals plummeted to a new low in Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission in the last election, earning just five per cent of the vote compared to Conservativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Randy Kampâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 54 per cent, or 28,803 votes. The surprise election had Liberal candidate Mandeep Bhuller take just 2,739 votes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; lower than candidate Dan Olsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3,394 votes in the 2008 campaign, when the Liberals finished behind the Green party. In elections prior to that, Liberals had taken about 10,000 votes, even with candidates that came from outside the community. The party is only now adjusting to the fundraising rules that require more focus on individual donations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re by no means dead. The Canada that we

know and love is based on policies and practices that were passed by Liberal governments,â&#x20AC;? Rice said. Federal Liberals choose a new leader in 2013, but that could be advanced depending on the results of a January convention, in which new rules could allow

party supporters, rather than party members only, to vote on the leader in a series of regional votes across the country. Rice also pointed out that after House of Common seats are redistributed in 2013, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge could get their own riding, with Mission becoming part

of Abbotsford. The party also says it has a strategy to combat Conservative attack ads launched leaders against Stephane Dion and Michael Ignatieff in previous campaigns. It plans on doing that by running â&#x20AC;&#x153;innoculation adsâ&#x20AC;? in advance to prepare voters for any nega-

Please note that Mission Business Bylaws state that if a licencee continues to carry on business within the District of Mission and does not renew and pay for their licence prior to Feb. 1, a late payment fee calculated at 25 per cent of their annual licence fee will be applied. Building future community leadership

anuary is always a time of renewal. Many of us set goals and resolutions that we promise to achieve by the end of the year, but by the end of January, December looks so far away. A common top 10 resolution is to get more involved. In a chamber survey this summer, community organizations revealed that Mission volunteerism is shrinking. Additionally, many organizations are Änding it tougher to recruit volunteers to get involved at the decision making level. They report that not only is time a factor but also many don’t feel conÄdent that they “have what it takes” to make the big decisions. The Building Community Leadership for the Future project looks to provide the framework to develop leadership potential. A pilot initiative of the Mission Chamber, the program is a series of four speakers and workshops designed to develop each participant’s leadership skills. • Jan. 28: Session one focuses on developing your leadership passion. Inspiring speaker Spencer West and facilitators from Me to We will draw on all ages to identify where they want to be involved and why. • Feb. 25: Session two will speak to the power of inÅuence. Explore the idea of the leadership gift with Christine McLeod, and how to use inÅuence to draw out the best of those around you. • March 31: Session three reminds us all that ethics drive a civil society. VanCity CEO Tamara Vrooman,

one of the top 100 women leaders to watch in Canada, and Chamber President Cal Crawford will have a conversation on ethical decision making. This will be followed with workshops on Ethical Fitness and Rotary’s Four Way Test. Both will identify what the core values are that you use to make decisions and how you can use them to guide you through the process. • April 28: Session four will discuss managing change. Change is inevitable and learning to work through it is a personal asset. Mission is also in transition. Those skilled in helping organizations work through this transition will be invaluable. Beyond the scope of the community, the skills taught in all four sessions are transferable to business as well as all aspects of life. Those who participate in all four sessions will also formally be acknowledged by the District of Mission as potential community leaders. Speakers are part of UFV’s President’s Leadership Lecture Series and each session has been kept affordable through community partnerships. What the chamber does One of the three key mandates of the chamber — advocacy — is primary to the goals and objectives of the organization. As the voice of business, the chamber advocates on member’s behalf. It succeeds in its advocate work through strategic planning, partnerships and communication. Membership in the BC Chamber of Commerce elevates the ability of the Mission Chamber to lobby as part of a broader network on provincial and federal issues. Additionally, working with the economic development ofÄce and the Mission Downtown Business Association ensures that the chamber’s advocacy maintains a broad scope for the beneÄt of all of its members. The chamber’s government affairs committee evaluates on-going issues presented by members as well as gets in front of upcoming challenges that may face the economic sustainability of the community. It develops the chamber’s positions on these issues and implements lobbying or support required. Members of the committee regularly go before municipal council, are registered provincial lobbyists and have quarterly meetings with MP Randy Kamp and MLAs Randy Hawes and Marc Dalton. The classic Daniel Defoe novel of human survival on a deserted isle has been adapted for the stage and is playing at Gallery 7 Theatre and Performing Arts in Abbotsford this January. Shipwrecked on an island following a violent storm, explorer Robinson Crusoe experiences a crisis of faith and undergoes a spiritual and emotional transformation. His vision of the world shattered and his imperialist sense of entitlement dashed, Crusoe endures 26 long years of complete isolation, surviving on the ship’s supplies and his own ingenuity. When he befriends a Caribe Indian, Crusoe discovers the power of friendship and experiences the value of acceptance in spite of differences. “We’ve stretched our technical abilities to create a visually stunning theatre experience, a compelling emotional and spiritual journey that

Crusoe is Carissa Boynton, who directed last year’s inspiring production of Tuesdays with Morrie in Vancouver. “I wonder who we are

when we are forced to be real with ourselves and give up the influences of our world around us?” Boynton asks rhetorically. “I wanted to explore how easily we fall back in to the same patterns of living we abandoned after finding them false.” Playing the title role is veteran performer, Andrew Abrahams, who has played such roles as C.S. Lewis in Shadowlands, and Captain Hook in Peter Pan. Ben Wert, who first appeared in last year’s production of Quiet in the Land, plays the Caribe native, Friday. Jay Danziger rounds out the cast playing two distinctive ship captains, characters that book-end Crusoe’s emotional and spiritual journey of survival. Robinson Crusoe runs Jan. 20, 21, 26 to 28 and Feb. 2 to 4 at 7:30 p.m. with additional discounted matinees on Jan. 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. at the

For those people who love Robbie Burns day, next Saturday provides two opportunities to enjoy the traditional festivities of the celebrated Scottish Bard. First up, the Mission unit of Canadian Cancer Society will be holding their fourth annual Robbie Burns’ Supper and Dance, at the Cedarbroke Chateau (event sponsor) 32331 Seventh Ave. on Saturday, Jan 21. There will be door prizes, 50/50 draw, and live and silent auctions. Music will be performed by the band Piper Down with Highland dancers. ARE WE GOOD STEWARDS OF GOD’S GIFTS? It is sadly ironic that almost all of the major causes of death today are related to lifestyle or behavior choices. A hundred years ago, most people died from infections or accidents, and there was little that most people could do to prevent their deaths. While infection still makes the list of the leading causes of death, the others are all related to lifestyle or behavior choices. According to the American Medical Association, the leading causes of death are related to the following: tobacco use, poor diet/physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, infection, toxic agents, motor vehicle accidents, firearms, sexual behavior, and illicit use of drugs. (JAMA, March 10, 2004-Vol. 291, No. 10) And although we certainly can’t stave off death indefinitely, we can prolong our lives by doing some relatively simple things like not smoking, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, wearing seat belts and not driving too fast, not engaging in risky sexual behaviors, and not using illicit drugs or consuming too much alcohol. This isn’t “rocket science,” and it isn’t “breaking news” either. Many of us too easily rationalize our unhealthy behavior, but the bottom line is really about being grateful to God for the precious gift of life and choosing a lifestyle that protects and enhances that gift. Are we good stewards of God’s gift, or does our lifestyle reflect ingratitude toward God’s gift of life?

The Mission Icebreakers have dropped to last place in the Harold Brittain conference after a pair of losses last week. Now sitting with nine points on the season, and a record of 3-22, they’re six points behind the Ridge Meadows Flames, and will face the Delta Icehawks tonight (Jan. 12) at the Leisure Centre at 7:45 p.m. In last Thursday’s game against the Grandview Steelers, the outof-towners came out with a 1-0 lead after a power play goal in the first period, before the Icebreakers got back into the game, tieing it at

one with a marker from Mattias Schmitt, and helpers from Zachary Moses and Danny Hall. Grandview held it together and managed to put two more behind Icebreakers’ netminder Lukas

Simpson, who faced 38 shots that night, and earned the game’s second star. The night before, the Mission junior B team travelled to Aldergrove to take on the top team in the conference, the Kodiaks. Aldergrove scored twice in the first period, and Danny Hall, with an assist from Vitalik Morozov, managed to put one on the board for the Icebreakers. The Kodiaks jumped on the Icebreakers early in the second, scoring again, but Michael Bell gave a boost to the Mission team with a goal in the dying minutes of the period. Luyken puts up 26 points for UFV Cascades The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team kept their home record unblemished (6-0) with a 64-56 win over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns last Saturday night at the Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford. In the process, UFV improved their overall record to 7-3, good for a share of first place in the Canada West division.

The Pronghorns sstarted strong and hheld a four-point lead tthrough one quarter. B But the Cascades tturned up the D in tthe second, holding Luyken L Lethbridge to seven points. UFV maintained a 36-27 advantage at the break and prevented the Pronghorns from making any serious

inroads in the second half. “Lethbridge came out hard tonight and we were fortunate to escape the game with a win,” said Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer. “But sometimes you need to win ugly and fortunately we got it done tonight. With the 18-game schedule, every win is so important. We’ll take it and start getting ready for a tough test in Victoria next week.”

Thank ancestors for fishery I

have always known that the U.S. has many times eclipsed Canada, and in particular B.C., in the running battle over prominence for the world’s best of salmon and trout fisheries. Thanks to the latest addition in my library, via Christmas, I am beginning to see how this constant jockeying evolved. Back when our two lands, west of the shining mountains, were a place of adventure, wonder, and mystery, men of power and prominence viewed them as the land of manifest destiny, waiting to be exploited. At the time, before such things as the Confederation of Canada, the American Civil War, and railways, much of what today is regarded as the chief domain of the rainbow trout, was either barren or home of other indigenous fish.

In the east, governing bodies faced pessimistic and non-consenting sentiments toward fish stocking and enhancement. “The brook trout must go…” wrote William A. Bruette in his 1883 outdoor column. Contrasting the popular opinions of the day, were well-heeled constituents who wanted streams full of fish, which would satisfy Je both the sport and reputation of a gentleman. Eyes turned to the west, where there were vast unpopulated expanses and reports of rivers teeming with wild salmon. Be you for it or against it, thanks is due to men of great vision, political engineering,

and a few opportunists, for the free-hold salmon and trout sport fisheries that we have today. Next week we look at the pastor from Charlestown, New Hampshire, who pioneered and established the sport fish hatchery practices still in use.
