A Letter from the District Administrator

During the pandemic, Mission Oaks Recreation & Park District faced challenges that we have never seen before, much like the rest of the world. District staff creatively adapted to a new work environment. Much of our staff were able to collaborate and bring programs directly to your home via Zoom, but not all divisions were able to operate in the same fashion. While the recreation and administration divisions were able to work from home utilizing laptops and video telecommunicating software, the parks division did not have that option and had to find new ways to stay safe while keeping the community clean and sanitized. Park staff job duties during the pandemic included, but were not limited to, picking up litter, changing trash cans, sanitizing playgrounds, cleaning restrooms, sanitizing facilities, fixing irrigation, pruning shrubs, trimming trees, and removing hazards. None of these tasks can be completed from home. Park staff continued to come in seven days a week and perform their duties. MORPD parks experienced more foot traffic than ever during the pandemic. As more people stuck in their houses needed some sort of escape, the parks provided exactly that. In an abundance of caution, workstations and work schedules were changed. The park division was broken into three teams and operated out of multiple locations. Work start times were adjusted to allow for staff to not have to share vehicles and avoid running into each other throughout the day at various parks. Vehicles and workstations were sanitized at the conclusion of every shift. During the uncertain times where direction and precautions seemed to be changing daily, the park division continued to diligently perform their job duties with a positive attitude. Right behind safety, the primary mission for the park division is to create an environment where positive memories are made. The importance of parks in the community has been made abundantly clear during the pandemic and I want to give a huge thank you to the park staff that kept them clean, safe, and operational when the community needed them most. Their effort and diligent work did not go unnoticed by our staff or community. Daniel Barton District Administrator
