THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GENUINE MISSIONARY ENCOUNTER IS THE GREATEST INTELLECTUAL AND PRACTICAL TASK FACING THE CHURCH. FACING THE CHURCH.

Lesslie Newbigin

Friends,

We started Missional Labs with a vision to tackle the big challenges facing the future of the Church as the world changes rapidly around us.

As a nonprofit venture organization, we approach ministries like startups. Our primary work is to support new ministries and movements on the frontiers of mission, equipping our fellows with theology, coaching, strategic support, connections, and funding. Our hope is that they grow into highimpact organizations that shape our spiritual landscape and advance the way of Jesus.

This work exists inside of a relational vision for a modern mission society, like the societies and orders of previous eras, committed to forming and sending leaders and connecting churches, ministries, and funders to galvanize resources toward the pressing needs of mission in our time.

Thanks for your support and joining us in the early days.

01

VISION OVERVIEW

We believe that faithful witness to the Gospel requires a renewed missional imagination. The Church of tomorrow needs courageous leaders, marked by spiritual renewal and cultural intelligence, ambitious vision, and innovative methods.

Our platform exists to equip pioneer leaders, nurture kingdom dreams, and accelerate missional ventures on the redemptive edge of Church and culture. We blend the best of a startup accelerator and a school of mission, anchored in a network of leaders, builders, thinkers, and funders. Our hope is for an era of Spirit-led movements that renew the Church and advance the Way of Jesus.

MISSION

The future is cultivated by those who know the story they are living in, and know how to play a part in the Missio Dei. We seek to renew the missional imagination of the Church.

LEADERS

Breakthrough movements come from mature leaders with apostolic imagination, who partner with the Spirit and lead with humility and courage. We raise up pioneer leaders.

VENTURES

We don’t need more ideas - we need new tools, models, structures, ventures, organizations, and institutions for a new era. We launch and support new ventures.

03

ACCELERATOR

A global fellowship for growth-stage ventures on the forefront of mission, discipleship, and the Church.

We’re the startup accelerator for a new generation of ministries and movements. We support earlystage projects (nonprofit and for-profit) working on new approaches to mission, discipleship, leadership, and the Church.

Our nine month program selects a cohort of founders, and gathers for three curated events in New York City, London, and San Francisco with intimate pitch days in each city, and virtual trainings and mentoring throughout.

APPLICATIONS FOR COHORT 4 OPEN NOW

Our fellows develop theological vision, leadership depth, and entrepreneurial capacity, and get connected to our network of mentors, funders, and leaders from around the global Church. We’re the only leadership program that deeply understands ministry leadership and social entrepreneurship.

BIG OPPORTUNITY

Young Christians feel called to pursue careers that help renew our fallen world, careers tackling global problems such as extreme poverty, climate change, and the unreached. Ambitious, analytical, high-impact-potential Christians ages 18-25, especially in the US and UK, and at top universities. We help them to discern a plan for a meaningful, impactful career, from the basis of their faith in Jesus.

Mapping the Future

Data and mapping platform to help denominations and church planting organizations plant smarter.

VISION

Mapping the Future is a real-time, open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) research platform for church planters, church planting organizations, and other researchers.

Toby's family has been in California for four generations and he was raised mostly in San Diego and Monterey. He and his wife Rebekah were married in San Diego in 1999 and have three active and fun boys aged 15, 10, and 7. Toby earned his BS from UC Davis and after spending a number of years in the marketplace, he went back to school to pursue a masters at Westminster Seminary in California and a PhD at Stony Brook University in New York. While living in Brooklyn, God redirected Toby and Rebekah towards full-time ministry, and they came home to California in 2009 to plant a church in San Francisco.

toby@tbc.city mappingthefuture.io Cohort 03

BIG OPPORTUNITY

We need to increase our rate of church planting across the country, but we need to do it smarter with higher rates of church viability and community impact. Church planting is not only one of the greatest hopes for reaching people that do not know Jesus, it is also costly and requires a tremendous amount of sacrifice. For the sake of all involved, we need to do better.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This exists to serve church planters and church planting organizations.

PROGRAM MODEL

We are creating a real-time, open-source national Geographic Information System (GIS) research platform for church planters, church planting organizations, and other researchers.

IMPACT

The user interface will be accessible to a broad diversity of end-users. We will use the collective impact model to identify key variables related to church plant viability and community impact.

FUNDRAISING PLAN

We have received a grant from a foundation, and my time on the project is paid for by Transforming the Bay with Christ, a collaborative network in the Bay Area.

BIGGEST ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

Getting a working model up and testing it. We will then need to roll it out nationally and make a lot of decisions about the future.

BIG OPPORTUNITY

The future of the global church will be young and African (Pew estimates 1.1 Billion Christians living in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2050). Africa doesn’t need charity, it needs good leadership, and local leaders, who deeply love and understand their communities, are massively overlooked and under-resourced. We believe the time is now to invest in this next generation of leaders.

TARGET AUDIENCE

We provide young leaders ages 22 - 35 working across sectors in Kenya and Uganda with foundational training in leadership skills and holistic discipleship, and mobilize them to partner with God to bring Kingdom transformation through their work.

IMPACT

In three years, we’ve graduated 8 cohorts and 140+ leaders. By 2030, we hope to be in 5 countries, with 1,000+ leaders formed in the way of Jesus and unafraid to dream differently about the future, directly impacting the millions more that they represent.

FUNDRAISING PLAN

We have launched a $1M capital campaign for 2024, which will build the necessary infrastructure to enable our 2030 vision.

We are looking for both individual donors and grant opportunities, and eventually will be building out revenue generation streams locally in East Africa for long-term sustainability.

Rise Collective is a women’s ministry and non-profit organization that exists to raise up early-career women through discipleship, that they would be equipped to live full lives in the Spirit.
