This work to rewrite stories of injustice creates space for trust, deepening of relationships, and a profound ability to speak into the lives of those who have never experienced hope in Jesus.

When we partner with local indigenous leaders who have meaningful and relevant cultural context, the gospel can reach people groups who have previously been forgotten and unseen. In many instances, they can receive the message of hope that is available to them for the first time.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear Mission ONE Family, Thank you for your faithful partnership in the Gospel over the last year. Since joining this incredible community about a year ago, I have had the unique privilege of getting to know many of the individuals that God has used over the last 30 years to make Mission ONE’s work come to life.

From Phoenix to Florida, to Edmonton, I have traveled across North America meeting the faces behind this ministry’s incredible work. Everywhere I have gone, I have been met with a warm welcome and a firm commitment to continue to honor the Lord’s leading to support this ministry.

Together, we are making communities around the world look more like the Kingdom of God, one day, one person, and one community at a time. What a joy it is for all of us to share in this great calling, for the glory and honor of Jesus Christ!

When unreached people of the world lack the good news of Jesus Christ, they don’t experience the peace, love, abundance of joy, and freedom that you and I know in our hearts. When we bring restoration to both their physical and spiritual needs, we’re simultaneously acknowledging their suffering and pointing them to our creator, who loves them.

WHO WE ARE WHAT WE DO

Mission ONE has been reaching unreached people groups for over 30 years. We partner with indigenously led organizations to plant churches, build schools, open clinics, end oppression, and so much more.

Here's how:

WE ARE GLOBAL AND LOCAL We partner directly with leaders of indigenously led local organizations. We’ve known our partners for years (sometimes decades) and they are ministering to the communities and cultures that they themselves are from. We are over 30 years old and have invested deeply in these partners and their local organizations.

We start projects and programs that communities in the hardest places really need–and then set up a plan for them to become selfsustaining so that they might know the joy of independence. Then we reinvest in the next need.

Over half a million people in previously unreached places have come to know hope in Jesus because of our work. But more than that–we develop tools and courses to train EVERYONE in good theology.

We start hard discussions, and we challenge the way things have been done.

THE VALUE OF EDUCATION THE CHALLENGE While women represent over half of the global population, they account for two-thirds of the world's poorest citizens and two-thirds of the world's illiterate population.

In the remote Pokot district of Kenya, girls are often excluded from school. A family’s lack of financial resources, access to the nearest school, and societal pressures to get married at a young age all contribute to girls’ lack of education.

Girls are taught to believe that their value comes from how they serve in a family. Girls younger than 15 are pressured into marrying men decades older and abandoning their own ambitions, health, safety, and gifts in favor of starting families.

Access to schools is often limited and the distance girls need to travel in order to attend school often puts their health and safety at great risk due to gender-based violence in addition to creating a financial burden that most families are unwilling to shoulder.

Girls are robbed of the opportunity to create a life that fully expresses their worth, value, and Godgiven potential.

OUR SOLUTION We believe that women and girls are some of the world's greatest untapped resources. When girls stay in school and finish their secondary education, they are given the chance to thrive! In addition to living longer and earning higher wages, girls who are given the opportunity to attend school also go on to make a significant impact in their communities through their vocation. If they choose to get married and have children, they’re doing so later in life, resulting in healthier babies, fewer complications, and more equitable relationships.

Parallel to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #5 of gender equality, Mission ONE is actively working with our indigenous partners to ensure the safety, protection, and advancement of women and girls. Normalizing girls’ education in Pokot will also change the way that girls are perceived in the community, shifting generational cycles of poverty, violence, and gender discrimination.

Together with our partners in Kenya, Mission ONE has successfully begun construction on an all-girls' school in Pokot.

For this project to move forward, we had to overcome several obstacles. Mission ONE had to receive government permission to build in this area, the community had to embrace the societal shift of educating their daughters, and we had to raise the financial resources needed.

We’re thrilled to share that with your prayers and support, along with God’s grace, we’ve overcome all three obstacles!

YOUR IMPACT Construction on the building for grades 9 and 10 has been completed.

Mission ONE, the community, and the government will partner to build facilities for grades 11 and 12 next year.

The government has agreed to fund the teachers’ salaries.

The first group of students (18 girls) have completed their first school year.

Students took their first field trip out of North Pokot.

HOLISTIC COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

THE CHALLENGE In Nepal, many indigenous communities live at the bottom of the caste system, which still dominates the social fabric today and can make it impossible to access education, jobs, and social services. Since they’re unrecognized by the government, they don’t have access to any infrastructure and nearly 80% of the total population lives in the rural jungle terrain. These villages live in generational cycles of poverty and suffer from substance abuse, violence, and sexual exploitation.

Even though the need is great, the Nepali government discourages NGOs from working in these areas due to safety concerns. In addition, Nepal is also known for being notoriously hostile towards Christians.

The Cave People The Chepang people, better known as the “Cave People,” are an indigenous tribe of about 175 families that live in south-central Nepal. The community gets its nickname from its practice of carving caves into the hillsides for shelter. The Chepang people have lived in extreme cycles of poverty for generations without educational or economic opportunities–without hope.

OUR SOLUTION Mission ONE has been faithfully ministering to the indigenous people of Nepal, restoring their dignity, hope, and spiritual wellbeing through culturally appropriate gospel curriculum and access to sustainable economic resources since 2009.

Mission ONE partners in Nepal have been committed to these communities through the most unimaginable hardships. Even after disasters like a flood and COVID-19 created even more devastation, our partners in Nepal were able to mobilize quickly and meet the most urgent needs of food and sanitation products.

Mission ONE has created lasting partnerships with the Nepali government to build safe and sustainable homes, and even construct new churches. The people in these communities are working together to build shelters, grow their own food, invest in education, and, many are devoting their lives to God in the process. Using a holistic development model, our partners in Nepal are addressing every area of life.

Along with our local partners and dedicated supporters like you, Mission ONE has been able to help Nepali communities discover Christ’s love and learn for the first time that they are worthy in the eyes of God. They’re learning that their previous circumstances can change and that they are image-bearers of God.

YOUR IMPACT 125 families received 2 goats each.

A system of cooperative goat husbandry is operating.

Excess goats will be sold to outside markets in the next six months.

75 families are now church members.

2 local pastors are being trained to lead the 2 local churches.

We will continue to monitor for long-term health for one year.

BUT THERE IS MORE WORK TO DO IN NEPAL In the next year, we plan to begin using this same holistic development model as we develop relationships and raise up leaders in two new communities.

The Musahar People The Musahar people are made up of about 110 families who live in the southern part of Nepal near the Indian border in a village called Devchuli Nawalparashi. They live near the jungle and rely on its natural resources for survival. However, the Nepalese jungle is extremely dangerous. Many people regularly die from animal attacks and floods. The community is also extremely resistant to education. As a result, most adults lack good jobs, and the children aren’t motivated to learn. Much like the Chepang people, this village suffers from extreme physical, spiritual, and mental poverty, often experiencing abuse and addiction.

People of Mukta Kamaiya The Mukta Kamaiya community is made up of about 5,000 people who are freed bondslaves. Before Nepal’s eradication on slavery in 2008, bondslaves were forced to work another person’s land under what’s called the “Haliya system.” Once slavery was abolished, the newly freed citizens were often left with the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aftermath of a life filled with discrimination, oppression, and abuse. Many are illiterate and unsure how to acclimate to their new lives.

CHURCH PLANTING AROUND THE WORLD We believe that the local church has the power to move an entire community from hopeless to hopeful. When healthy churches are created within marginalized communities, local leaders are developed and empowered to rise up and serve their communities. It is through the church that trust is created, relationships are built, and both spiritual and physical transformations take root. When the church is at the center of our work, cycles of poverty are eliminated, and God is glorified.

EPHESIANS gospel project Our diversity is not an accident. God created and ordained the cultural diversity of humankind in order to more fully reflect his glory, majesty, and truth.

The Ephesians 2 Gospel Project aims to explore a mystery: Why is Ephesians 2:11–22, a text about cross-cultural unity in Christ, widely ignored as part of the gospel—despite its significant atonement and gospel content?

We launched the Ephesians 2 Gospel Project in January 2021 with the hopes of starting international conversations with scholars and practitioners to explore collective identity conflict. This two-year research project will produce a book in the short-term, but more than that, we desire to see God’s people drawn into and embody Christ’s peacemaking work through the gospel Our Research Includes: Listening to and learning from the Global Church, including Mission ONE ministry partners Grappling with relevant questions about the gospel, the atonement of Christ, the global mission of the church, and why the church has sometimes been complicit with conflict and violence Reading relevant literature (books and articles) on history, theology, missiology, the social sciences Completing the book (co-authored by Werner Mischke and Kristin Caynor), which is the catalyst for developing other resources for learning and practice Facilitating a fellowship of Christian scholars and practitioners around the world to study and embody the gospel of peace as a solution to collective-identity conflict in the church in their own nations and contexts When you join hands with Mission ONE, you’re not only making a difference in the lives of marginalized people, but you are also contributing to the deep theological conversations that move us all closer to Christ. YOUR IMPACT Research on how the Church has historically used Ephesians 2 is complete.

Research on how the Hebrew language is used in Ephesians is complete.

Gathering the ideas from our partners on how the gospel speaks to tribal conflict in their communities has begun.

A partnership between Mission ONE and our partners in India for a webinar series on this subject has been formed. One webinar was conducted in October of 2021 with 50 in attendance.

One research trip was conducted to Germany.

A second research trip to Rwanda, Kenya, and South Sudan was completed in April 2022.

SEWING PROJECTS: MORE THAN A SKILL THE CHALLENGE Women in marginalized communities face unimaginable hardships. In patriarchal societies, men maintain all the power and women are often subject to abuse and violence. Many women are excluded from educational systems, leaving them without the means to make a living and often forcing them into prostitution.

This leaves them vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and gender-based violence.

Many women feel disempowered, unworthy, and ashamed of their path and are left without other opportunities to care for themselves and their families.

Even women who aren’t involved in prostitution are regularly subjected to disenfranchisement at the hands of their own husbands. When women don’t contribute to the family income, they’re excluded from family decisions and remain trapped in the generational cycle of poverty.

OUR SOLUTION We believe that when women are given the opportunity to pursue their God-given talents and earn an income in a dignified way, they can reclaim their future. We know that when women earn an income, they reinvest 90% back into their communities and families when compared to men who reinvest 35%.

Empowering a woman through vocational training has a massive ripple effect that extends to her family, her community, and for generations to come. When women can contribute to their family finances, their households become more equitable and family perceptions begin to shift.

Together with our indigenous partners in Kenya, Mission ONE has successfully started a sewing project in two communities.

Our sewing projects seek to teach women quality sewing skills, preserve culture, and allow women a safe place to express concerns and build healthy relationships with other women in their communities. The program also teaches the women other crucial skills to accompany their sewing such as money management and business. With a portion of the proceeds going back to the co-op, this self-sustaining program ensures that once they’ve completed their training, graduates can begin teaching other women and have immediate access to work and income.

These sewing projects allow women a dignified and safe alternative that will support their families and allow them to step into spiritual growth through community.

She is a girl who was largely forgotten, faraway, excluded—but to God, she is remembered, near, and included. She is valued. Because of donors like you, she knows her God-given value.

DOING THEOLOGY. THINKING MISSION. Many Christians separate theology from God's mission for the church. This lack of synthesis creates unrealistic theology and simplistic mission strategies. But the Bible is not a book of abstract ideas removed from reality. Our mission is done poorly and causes harm if we do not understand the Bible well enough to communicate its message to other contexts both faithfully and meaningfully.

We noticed that there was a great lack of meaningful discussions that bring theology and missions together, so we launched a podcast that would do just that.

The podcast is co-hosted by Jackson Wu, Honor and Shame Theologian and scholar, Werner Mischke, Mission ONE Vice President, and Carrie Vaughn, a missionary in China for 15 years. Each episode spotlights distinct themes that reflect a current topic within society or the church relating to the intersection of theology and missiology.

Episodes feature expert interviews and honest conversations. Each episode is professionally produced and rich in content and resources that will help listeners dive deeper.

By demonstrating synthesized thinking, theologians and ministry practitioners alike will be equipped to reflect on matters in ways that are more biblically faithful and culturally meaningful. The Mission ONE podcast also specifically aims to influence the conversation about honor and shame around the world, making way for more impactful ministry.

LOCALLY SUSTAINED MISSIONS THE CHALLENGE Ministry work requires planning, logistics, and often travel. When pastors are unable to share God’s love, encourage those who are suffering, and celebrate alongside their community, connection, trust, and relationships suffer.

Good ministry is done side-by-side. Since many pastors who partner with Mission ONE live in rural communities often covering large geographical areas, having access to reliable and safe transportation is crucial to their ministry’s success.

With hundreds of pastors, spread out across multiple rural communities in multiple countries, the needs far outweigh the financial resources.

As the need for transportation rose, so did the need for honest and sustainable income for community members in the same areas.

OUR SOLUTION Creating locally sustainable mission work is important to us at Mission ONE. Creating a profitable business that serves the community and funds local ministries is a goal we’ve been working on together with our partners for years. Two of our partners have now started car rental businesses with this goal in mind.

This solution provides the necessary resources for pastors to continue in their ministry, maintain a sustainable solution for ministry operating costs, and for community members to earn a stable and consistent income.

When pastors can travel safely to visit rural members of their community, it shows the love of God and helps church leaders remain connected to the physical and spiritual needs of a community.

When ministry projects rely less on outside resources and support, the ministry is more sustainable, and the community members are empowered to continue their important work.

This type of business also offers the community a unique way to minister to its neighbors. Most believers tend to think about evangelism as only existing in their homes or churches, but this project has given them the opportunity to meet more people, have conversations with those in their community, and run an honest business with integrity and values as an example to others.

Since the car rental business is profitable, it means they can use their income to invest in other programs that support the various needs of the community. When we work with our indigenous partners to create profitable and selfsustaining business models, it means they need less outside support and can leverage their own God-given skills and talents to build thriving ministries. They’re able to care for their own needs and author their own transformation.

7 jobs were created.

4 cars have been purchased (3 from Mission ONE start-up funds and 1 from the profit already made by the business).

The business is averaging a monthly profit of $900 that is reinvested into ministry work locally.
