Welcome to the 2018 Yearbook Edition!

This issue is dedicated to our passionate, enthusiastic and strong tennis community. The following pages recognize the accomplishments – on and off the court – of our state’s avid players. 2017 was a year that saw continued growth in leagues, the launch of Net Generation and more tennis spirit than ever.

After the success of the summer months, which crowned junior and league champions, our great state was hit by Hurricane Harvey. In the aftermath of the historical storm, our tennis family rallied to raise over $65,000 that was distributed back to help rebuild our Texas tennis communities, which were devastated by the storm.

We hope you enjoy the 2018 Yearbook Edition and encourage you to search for your name or a friendly face you recognize.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER The New Normal Emily Schaefer, USTA Texas President As 2018 rolls along, I hope that last year’s tribulations are fading into the background and you are back and ready for action.

Watching the recent Australian Open was a great reminder of just how much it takes to be tennis champions. The new levels of fitness, equipment, technology and performance were in plain sight during matches that lasted several hours in the sweltering heat, and as journeyman pros played head-to-head with the game’s best as if it was just another day.

Perhaps this is the “new normal” in tennis. For those who want to compete and be successful, they must dedicate their bodies and minds to working hard just to be ready for an opportunity that may come along when they least expect it. It’s always been true that entering a tournament is exciting simply because one person or team is going to win it. Things happen – injuries, illness, defaults, etc. – that thrust players farther in the field than they may have expected. It is good to be ready when that happens.

USTA Texas is looking ahead now to be prepared for a stronger future. We are gathering information from our community leaders, tournament directors, players and volunteers.

Important areas such as technology, court infrastructure, local and national initiatives and diversity and inclusion will shape the “new normal.”

Strategic directions help unify the goals of the entire Texas Tennis family, and solid planning will make sure we are prepared when the time comes. It’s an amazing period to be involved in tennis. Stay tuned as our plans unfold.

VAN’S ADVANTAGE Looking to the Future Van Barry, USTA Texas Executive Director Last month, we held a Community Tennis Association Leadership Forum in Austin. I’m pleased to share this update that representatives from throughout the state gathered there to discuss and build a vision for the future of Texas tennis.

The framework for the meeting was to look forward three to five years and provide information that will allow us to develop a plan for growth that aligns with our section’s strategies and goals.

Discussion points covered further developing a stronger customer service culture, current and future technology needs, facility management and operations, revolutionizing the future of our tournaments and leagues, as well as effectively communicating to our growing and diverse constituency.

The words ‘education’ and ‘information’ came up many times during the meeting. A key takeaway for me is the necessity for improved access to relevant and up-to-date information at the local levels. Most important, the type of information that is needed covers all areas of our tennis industry. This includes information for new players and parents coming into our sport; information for city leaders on the economic and lifestyle impact tennis has on a community; information for our program providers on best practices to enhance the experience for the consumer; and countless other aspects.

The energy in the room and exchange of ideas throughout the meeting was fantastic. I thank all those who attended for their valuable input. I’m excited about the framework we developed and encouraged by the opportunity we now have for innovative solutions.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

For Black History Month, we spoke to one of the rising stars of the Texas tennis community – Mukasa Ricketts. Mukasa is a 2017 Texas Diversity Grant recipient and won the Arthur Ashe National Essay Contest in 2016 for boys ages 15-16. “Now, I understand how tennis changed me,” Mukasa told wrote in his essay. “I realize that what you see depends almost entirely on what you look for. I used to only see the things that I wasn’t, but now I see the things that I can be, and I am willing to work for it.”

We asked Mukasa more about his experience with tennis and what it means to him.

Name: Mukasa Ricketts City: Dallas, TX USTA: How many years have you been involved with tennis and in what capacity?

Mukasa: I’ve been playing the game for about four years now, with three of those years being with the Dallas Tennis Education and Academy. I’ve played at the Challenger level and am now at the Championship level.

USTA: What’s your proudest tennis moment?

Mukasa: It’s hard to pick just one, but if I had to, I would say it was when I made it on my high school tennis team. Looking back, it doesn’t seem like a huge accomplishment, but it was significant to me because it proved that I could go a step further than I thought and that I could be as good a tennis player as anyone else.

USTA: How did you first get into tennis?

Mukasa: I was in high school and didn’t play any sports, so I tried out for all the sports to see which one I would like. This eventually led me to tennis where I actually started out as a ball boy for the team. A year later I would become the number two ranked player on the team.

USTA: What does tennis mean to you?

Mukasa: In one word, I would say it means character. In the world of sports, to do more, you have to become more. In my efforts to become a better athlete and accomplish more, I’ve had to build upon myself and learn humility, dedication, resilience, confidence and patience because those are the attributes of the successful.

USTA: What are some of your greatest accomplishments?

Mukasa: • Being on my high school tennis team when I was in my country, Jamaica • Receiving several awards from the Dallas Tennis Education and Academy (DTEA) for: Excellence, Sportsmanship, Leadership (2017), Player of the Year for three consecutive years (2015, 2016 & 2017), and Volunteer of the Year (2017) • Playing my first national tennis tournament, the American Tennis Association National Championship and receiving an award for sportsmanship there

SCHOLARSHIP

USTA Texas and Whataburger have announced Gabriel Herrera Jr. (Laredo) and Landon Gloaguen (Houston) as the recipients of the 2017 USTA Texas NJTL Whataburger Scholarship. Both Gabriel and Landon received $1,000 scholarships to Texas A&M University and Baylor University, respectively.

Gabriel, an architecture student at Baylor, will look to “stay involved in the community and pursue the dreams I have of opening my own architecture firm.” Landon, a USTA Texas Diversity Grant recipient in 2012 & 2013, as described by USTA Texas President Emily Schaefer: “Whether as a student, leader or volunteer, Landon has exhibited qualities that demonstrate solid character and citizenship.”

The USTA Foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors who: • Demonstrate academic achievement (3.0 minimum GPA) • Perform community/volunteer service • Participate in organized youth tennis program such as National Junior Tennis and Learning • Demonstrate financial need

Whataburger has served as a long-time partner of the section and presenting sponsor of the USTA Texas NJTL program. USTA Texas would like to thank all who applied and wish the best to Gabriel and Landon in their future endeavors.

2017 BORDER BATTLE The 2017 Border Battle, the sixth annual competition between USTA Texas and USTA Southwest, took place November 17-19. Hosted by USTA Texas at Lifetime Tennis in Plano, this competitive event brings together the top twelve (six boys and six girls) 10 and Under Green Ball players from the two Sections for three days of intense training, competition, camaraderie and fun!

New in 2017, the six coaches chose two players to receive awards based on effort, engagement, compete level, and attitude throughout the weekend. Rayna Li and Daniel Nasser each received a new tennis racquet, courtesy of Head/Penn. The coaches also chose four players (two from USTA Southwest and two from USTA Texas) to receive Sportsmanship Awards. Karina Zaharieva and Juno Pethe received the awards for USTA Texas.

Karina Zaharieva on her Border Battle experience: “My dad and I arrived early; I was too excited and ready to start practicing for the 2017 Border Battle. I did a few dynamic warm-ups and hit with a teammate before the coaches brought everyone together. We did a few dynamic warm-ups and split into small groups. Kenna Erickson and I were with two other girls to be in a group with Coach Amanda, who was a great coach and really helped us improve our game. ​ hat same evening, everyone was encouraged to a fun Top Golf team competition so we could all bond, have fun, and get to know one another. Even though USTA T Southwest might be our opponent on the court, they were still our friends! We had a lot of fun...and funny moments. We all got to know each other better; we all had a great time.

On Saturday morning, I arrived a few minutes earlier before 9AM. A few other players started arriving and we waited by the tennis courts for the coaches to bring everyone together. The coaches called us together for Team Training, and first thing, telling us players: Everything counts - every set, every game, every point counts toward your team’s score. That really made me nervous because I didn’t want to let my team down.

After a short water break, we performed some team training drills and worked on different techniques (this time, with different coaches and players). At the end of the team drills. the coaches assigned our partners for mixed doubles match play. My partner and I we worked well together, and our skills complemented each other well, which helped us won our match, 4-1; 4-1. Consequently, my partner and I winning our match gained ​Team Texas a big lead since most of our teammates had also won their matches. We went off for lunch feeling excited and confident with what had going for us so far.

Following lunch, around 1:00 p.m. everyone gathered on court and did their dynamic warm-ups. The coaches then assigned us our opponent for singles match play. The day wasn’t over just yet; it just gotten started!

I got my singles opponent, her name was Mya. She had a big serve, which helped her take control of the point quickly. My goal was to counter her fast serves and get myself in a rally, and hopefully I could find an opportunity to dictate the shots during our point rally. My slice returns helped neutralize her serves and helped me move her a bit. I would wait for her to make mistakes while staying patience, but also hitting each series of shots just a tad bit harder and faster than the previous one. But it was still difficult defending her shots, despite me adapting and implementing a neutralizing strategy. Fortunately, I won the first set 4-1!

Feeling her momentum, Mya continued to hit powerful forehands and backhands groundstrokes with more angles in the second set. I did my best defending, but defending wasn’t the way to be competitive in this match. I ended up losing the second set 0-4!

We split sets, and it dawned on me that I needed to be more aggressive and attack at every opportunity in the final, third set if I wanted to win. With a renewed courageous (aggressive) tennis mindset, I neutralized Mya’s serves, counter-attacked most of her forceful groundstrokes, and dictated a few rallies. My commitment to my overall strategy worked. I ended up winning the match, 4-1, 0-4, 4-1! There was a mix of relief and excitement because I couldn’t wait to play more matches the next day. I had full confidence in myself and my team. I hoped my team could pull this off.

Here we were on our last training and competition Sunday morning, I arrived at the tennis center around 8:30 a.m. I had some practice with my teammates before the coaches called us inside (Lifetime Tennis Center had outdoor courts.) and started assigning our doubles matches. My partner was Kenna Erickson. We could had won but we fell short of holding our nerves together. I was nervous, and I could feel my partner was also nervous. Was it because of me? In the end, we needed a stronger mental game; we needed more control over the points. ​ enna and I lost our doubles match, 3-4, 3-4! It turned out, everyone on our team lost their doubles matches. (Team Texas needed more work on doubles!? ;-) So, it K wasn’t a “Sunday Fun Day” for Team Texas so far. We were feeling down. But since it was a team competition, only the total games won were counted, and the coaches updated us that Team Texas was still in the lead by 8 points (games). We all realized we needed to step-up our game and win our final lineups with singles matches if we wished to win this 2017 Border Battle. We Team Texas all knew we could do it and we all knew we would play our best.

The coaches now assigned our singles opponent. I was paired to play against girl named Madison. She played really cautious when she was losing in a rally, which gave me a big opportunity to control the point. I won 4-2, 4-0. Everyone on Team Texas won their singles matches! We were happy and excited, but it was not officially announced. We all sat down together and listened carefully, as they announced the winning team: USTA Texas or USTA Southwest?!

Meanwhile, the parents were talking and laughing, sharing their enjoyment to watch their kids competed. Us players? We were dead silent. This was huge for us! This was a big moment of our lives. (yeah, it’s was big deal!) Who will win the 2017 Border Battle? Then, after a long silence...

TEXAAAAAAAAAAS!!!

My whole team started yelling and clapping, oh who am I kidding, I was clapping and yelling the loudest. That didn’t matter now, I wasn’t an embarrassed loud girl.

Compared to how big this win was, being obnoxiously embarrassed wasn’t a feeling to us anymore. I lost all my self-awareness! Our hard work paid off With lots of confidence, I took away from this experience is that we will have bigger and more difficult challenges ahead for each one of us. Maybe not together as a team, but we all individually will face bigger matches, bigger obstacles as we continue our tennis life journey. Winning and losing are parts of the tennis journey. But that’s what we are training and preparing for, the bigger matches, the difficult challenges, the impossible obstacles. We are training to be tennis stars!”
