Coast To Coast Experiancing Beauty

Our Beauty Editors are going under cover to experience beauty across the country. First Stop: Bare Escentuals, Mall of America. Do you think your mineral foundations will continue to be just as popular with everyday women? Mineral is healthy for you. It is a big part of women’s life who love natural and who love organic and who that have less ingredients. There is the whole go green campaign/movement and I feel that if that is something that people decide to keep going with and following then yes! So many companies have mineral versions of their makeup now, and that is something we feel very strongly about. This product isn’t 150% for everyone but mineral tends to be healthier. It isn’t about just our makeup but you need to find what’s best for you and all of us here have found that this is what is best for us. All of us use this product everyday but everyone is very educated and would be able to tell the client what products are going to work on them personally. We have many variations of things to accommodate for our clients, we have liquid liners and pencil liners. We also have a luminous foundation and than a matt foundation. It’s just for the clients’ preference and that is why we tailor everything to our clients and ask them the questions in the beginning. People need to try everything and it can be tried. There is no commitment. We did a campaign last year that was “try, believe, and love” and we provided samples of our products, we try it on you for free. That way the client can believe in it love it and come back. Woman need to empower themselves to come in and try everything If there’s one item a woman should add to her beauty collection right now, what is it and why? I would say the most important would be skin care. Not only that but custom fitting the skin care to her needs. Find a great skin care and stick with it because your makeup is only good as the skin underneath it. You can always cover things and fix things with makeup, but your skin is number one. It’s your canvas! What products are you really excited about this season? This season is all about the Smokey eye, the fun lip gloss and doing a real glow finish. Whether it is a shimmery powder or a brightening primer with glow it is all about making the skin look radiant and then having a Smokey eye and fun pink or nude lip gloss. So all of them!

What do you think are the hottest new makeup trends? Some of the ones I have seen are the smokey eye, the luminous skin, really hot green smokey eyes. So kind of just playing with the springy/earthy colors is really fun! Smokey is not just about black and grey it is a style. Then you must add a really pretty pop of bright blush. You can’t have a fab smokey eye and then nothing else on your face! Something peachy and coraly would put you in the midst of the trendy colors. What can you do to ensure that once the eyeliner has been applied it stays and you don’t have to re-apply 10 minutes later? We have a smudge proof, smear proof water proof liquid that you can mix in with the mineral liner. This makes the liner stay on for the whole day with no reapplication. You could essentially wear it through the night and still have it on in the morning also! What is the best make-up and style for ethnic women? Anywhere that sells makeup they are trained well, and any colors/tones are going to be able to be tailored to the individual. So there is nothing that I am going to be able to say specifically for each person, because they aren’t in front of me but once again if you are able to make it in to a makeup store make sure to ask. There are books and articles, but it really is based on the individual. The main thing is for woman to feel empowered to go into the store and know that they can ask questions. So many women are scared to ask and they just want to look at the pictures from online. Go to a beauty place and try on everything and don’t stop asking questions because that is how you are going to learn what is for you.

I was on what seemed like an endless search for really cute dishware and tabletop items when I thought it would be fun to design what I was looking for. I have a passion for dishes and thought it would be a great opportunity to design exactly what I wanted - cute and stylish entertaining and dining ware that is affordable," explained Bilson.

RACHEL BILSON ELEGANT QUIRKY HOUSEWARE LINE L’elite Staff

Elegant yet quirky are two words that come to mind when describing actress Rachel Bilson’s recently launched housewear line "Edie Rose Home," an exclusive tabletop collection designed by the actress and fashionista. The style icon can add houseware designer to her resume, with the debut of her feminine and fresh tabletop line. Bilson’s passion for home furnishing dates back to her childhood. While other young girls were collecting dolls, Bilson was gathering dishes. Years later, when she found herself in need of dishes for her own home, she could not find anything that reflected her unique flair for entertaining.

“I was on what seemed like an endless search for really cute dishware and tabletop items when I thought it would be fun to design what I was looking for. I have a passion for dishes and thought it would be a great opportunity to design exactly what I wanted - cute and stylish entertaining and dining ware that is affordable," explained Bilson. The houseware collection was inspired by her grandmother, Edie, and a dear family friend, Rose, Rachel resolved to create a tabletop line that would meet her needs, as well as those of so many other young women. The brand aims to appeal to the modern woman at various stages of her life, whether she is going off to college, decorating her first apartment, registering for her wedding or simply in need of beautiful items for her home. "Edie Rose Home" truly reflects Rachel's personal style and is a fresh twist on traditional tabletop collections. Each item is intended to be mixed and matched, as solid pieces are layered with patterns and figural dishes. A chic color pallet of turquoise, aqua, black and white serves as a backdrop for the collection, and Bilson's love of birds, butterflies and all things whimsical are evident throughout the line. The products are affordably priced with pieces ranging from $12.00 to $58.00. "Edie Rose Home reflects a timely aesthetic that appeals to the fashion savvy Macy's customer," said Steve Cardino, vice president and fashion director of Macy's Home Store. "We are proud to be the exclusive retailer of this eclectic and affordable collection that infuses Rachel's eye for style with everyday pieces for the home."

MODERN ARTISTRY INSPIRED BY AFRICAN TRADITION

H

ighly creative re-imaginings of the iconic form of the African mask comprise a unique installation to be held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning March 8. Featuring 20 works of art—19 sculptures and one photograph—Reconfiguring an African Icon: Odes to the Mask by Modern and Contemporary Artists from Three Continents reflects on the enduring relevance of African masks as a source of inspiration for artists across cultures into the present. Highlights of the installation will be whimsical sculptures created from discarded consumption goods by contemporary artists Romuald Hazoumé (b. 1962) and Calixte Dakpogan (b. 1958), both from the Republic of Benin. Seventeen of the 20 works selected are on loan from European and American private collections; the others are drawn from the Museum's own collection. Works by Hazoumé and Dakpogan featured in the installation are self-consciously ironical references to the fact that the mask is the African form of expression most renowned in the West. Hazoumé's signature works on view, including Ear Splitting (1999, CAAC, The Pigozzi Collection, Geneva), are faces created from plastic gasoline jerricans, to which features made from a variety of scrap matter are added. The artist conceives of his "jerrican masks" as an homage to West Africa's masquerade traditions. They also function as portraits of contemporary Beninese society with a humorous twist, as well as layered and multifaceted reflections on the relationship between Africa and the West. Dakpogan, represented in the installation by Heviosso (2007, CAAC, The Pigozzi Collection, Geneva), draws upon such disparate media as metal from abandoned cars, CDs, combs, and soda cans. The descendent of royal blacksmiths of Porto-Novo in the Republic of Benin, he creates ingenious sculptural compositions that reflect upon coastal Benin's long history of exchanges, which have defined its religious and political history. Consciously invoking the mask's importance as it relates to regional expression and to its centrality to the art historical canon, Dakpogan reflects on this status through a highly inventive synthesis of unexpected yet familiar elements. The installation will also include explorations by modern and contemporary American artists in a variety of media to demonstrate further the open-ended potential of the seminal "mask" for dynamic reinvention. Works on view will include the iconic photograph Noire et Blanche by Man Ray (1890-1976), recent works by influential sculptor Lynda Benglis (b. 1941), and composite creations by Willie Cole (b. 1955). While Benglis's longstanding interest in African sculpture was the source of inspiration for a series of masks in glass shown here for the first time, Cole pays tribute to classical genres of African masks through assemblages of humble material drawn from his own environment that allow him to reflect on his spiritual attachment to Africa's material culture.

Sex Sells, Who Are We Selling Too? American Apparel Front Man Dov Charney Battling Sexual Allegations By: Mishell Brookins

In a world where sex sells, have we as Americans met our surplus? On the heels of National Sex Assault and Awareness Prevention Month; American Apparel is once again in the sexual scandal spotlight after reports have surfaced alleging American Apparel Founder Dov Charney imprisoned a former female employee and forced her to be a sex slave. Twenty year old Irene Morales says she was a victim of sexual harassment and was forced to perform oral sex by Mr. Charney. This is not the first time the company has been center stage of a sex scandal. Charney is no stranger to trouble. He has been accused masturbating in front of a reporter and was sued after unauthorized use of Woody Allen’s photo in an ad campaign. The quarter of a million dollar lawsuit was filed in Brooklyn court seeks damages for sexual harassment, gender bias and host of other allegations. The court papers state that Charney invited a then 17 year old, Morales, to his home in April of 2008 and answered the door wearing nothing but undergarments. Almost immediately after entering the home she was allegedly forced by Charney to perform oral sex and other explicit sex acts for a period of 8 hours. Morales’ attorney Eric Baum has stated that she has undergone extensive psychiatric treatments to cope with the distress of the ordeal. "Serious psychiatric injuries from which she will never recover," according to court documents. Baum says he is not sure yet if they will file criminal charges. United States Federal law allows 5-7 years window to bring allegations of sexual assault. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Baum states Morales did not quit sooner because she needed the job and was ashamed. Just over a month ago the company announced they were revamping the management team and Charney had expressed his delight in a press release. "I am pleased with the depth that we are continuing to add to our management team," said Dov Charney. We are not sure how this scandal will affect the company’s already declining share prices. In a public statement the company focused on the exit of Morales rather than the allegation, sighting that the 20 year old did not express any grievances upon her exit. "We have been informed today that [name redacted], a former employee of American Apparel who left the company without complaint and resigned with a letter of gratitude regarding her positive experience at the company, has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit in New York against the company. Upon her resignation, [redacted] acknowledged in writing that she had no pending claims against the company and signed a severance agreement which included a full release of claims and an agreement to submit any

future claims to confidential binding arbitration. All American Apparel's employees are subject to the same confidential arbitration agreement signed by [redacted] in order to protect the privacy interests of employees and former employees, and to prevent predatory plaintiffs and their attorneys from attempting to use the media to extort the company. Such an arbitration process was initiated by the company against [redacted] several weeks ago. The company intends to file a formal complaint with the NY state bar seeking disciplinary action against [redacted]'s lawyers who we believe are engaged in an illegal conspiracy to extort money from American Apparel. We are very confident that [redacted]'s claims will be promptly referred by the court to confidential binding arbitration where her claims and the company's counter-claims will be resolved, we believe fully in favor of the company."

A World of Fashion

Highlights from across the globe New York, London, Milan and Paris

Versace Fall 2011 Versace’s fall 2011 collection was military inspired with glamour and seduction. The Versace woman is always strong, and sexy. The collections comprised of tailored jackets, fitted silhouettes, leather and feathered dresses. Our favorite piece in the collection was the first look a black wool military inspired jacket with gold metal embellishments. The collection was the personification of form and function creating luxury.

Gucci Fall 2011 Gucci’s fall 2011 collection paid homage to the 70’s and boasted a vibrant range of colors. The collection was sexy glamorous and amongst other things chic.

Dolce Gabbana Fall 2011 Dolce and Gabbana’s fall 2011 collection was a literal embodiment of the yin and yang a battle of masculine and famine looks. Slim cut tailored jackets and overcoats, lowerrise pants with slimmed down leg at calf and Jackets with cut off sleeves, vest jackets and vests in colors or blacks, greens, fuchsias, yellows, pinks and slivers. The masculine elements where tuxedo shirts or shirts with large collars, coats and jackets cut in lace, palettes, herringbone and with embroidered lapels, Pin-stripes, herringbones, pied de poule, Prince of Wales, double gabardine, cashmere and white poplin for shirts. Models walked the runway to the tune of David Bowie’s

Maison Fall 2011 It seamed as if Maison’s fall 2011 collection was inspired by outwear. The collection showcased many frocks such s the coat like dress. Maison was able to showcase the elegance of simplicity. The dresses were layered with solid-color coat like fabric on top. Pinks, red, purple, and green consumed the collection and gave it a fresh feeling. The collection was a true ready to wear line, it’s commercial appeal was apparent.

Krizia Fall 2011 Krizia’s fall 2011 collection was about modernism. Platinum blunt cut hairdos and the asymmetrical shoulders were strong components of the entire collection. The one legged jumpsuit in silk fabric with a very low to there -cut V-neck. Krizia’s collection comprised of looks that can easily transition through the day we found ourselves in and we look forward to what is to come of next season.

Emilio Pucci Creative genius Peter Dundas brought us on a voyage to the high up in the where where loden greens, okra yellows, burgundies, robin egg blues and magenta colour the foliage of the horizon. The collection pushes the boundaries of craftsmanship with embellished loden, flannels, velvet appliqués and overprinted jacquards. Like in a fairytale, the Pucci Girl travels through dark forests to dreamy winter “schloesser” in faraway reaching places. The collection weaves ultra-rich with functionality, utilitarian with precious, often left raw and unfinished. References to the beautiful, inspiring work of Robert Polidori’s restoration of Versailles is a point of departure.

Hermes Fall 2011 Sophistication at its best is the only way one could describe Hermes fall 2011 collection. A gorgeous palette of neutral tones with bursts of vibrant colors, prints, and not to mention impeccable styling all factors that contributed to the makings of a stunning line. of ready to wear clothing. A sense of elegance entered the room as the loose black jacket with a contrasting yellow and orange color blocked lining, the leather trimmed jacket, the classic trench, the luscious fur coat made their way down the runway. Two words come to mind, refreshing and relaxing while the clothes remained flattering.

John Galliano Fall 2011 John Galliano’s fall 2011 collection was moment of deshavu, the collection yielded familiar fabrics, drama, silhouettes and element of glamour. The two part collection was comprised of day and evening wear with a strong focus on structure. . Galliano, even though was not present during the presentation still shows to have multiple supporters in the industry, and with the work he showed on the fall 2011 runway, rightfully so.

Kenzo Fall 2011 Loose flowing silhouettes conquered the runway along with a dark palette featuring elaborate patterns and prints. The Kenzo presentation was a salute to Latin America with airy volumes and dark, evocative colors. Paisley chiffon printed blouse was paired with a plaid kilt. Although at times the Kenzo collection may have seemed to get a bit carried away, Marras is the great love of contemporary fashion.

Danielle Scutt Fall 2011 Danielle Scutt’s fall 2011 collection was reminiscent of the 80’s era. After a year hiatus Danielle Scutt’s vision is back. Fishnets, off the shoulder cuts and large gold jewelry set the tone. Although not completely channeling the foot loose and fancy free spirit of the 80’s Scutt set a balance with sharp tailoring. The collection dressed a woman who is one not to be ignored and only to be noticed.

Burberry Fall 2011 The Fall 2011 Burberry Prorsum brought on vibrant colors and roomy shapes for its runway show. Embracing plaids, fur and Vibrant metallic dresses, chunky wedges and retro silhouettes provided us with a contemporary edge for the new season. Burberry’s infamous outerwear and creative director Christopher Bailey blended clothing with just the right amount of luxury coupled with just the right amount of street. The collection ended with a winter snow fall while the models wore a transparent weather cape over their individual looks.

Just as Gorgeous In Person as in Pictures Everyone loves looking back on fun events from pictures that were taken, but not everyone likes how they looked in the pictures! Not all of us can be as photogenic as the stars in Hollywood, but we are going to provide you with a few known facts to improve your look when being photographed. Picutre Secrets 1. Use a flash outdoors 2. Try to create a plain background 3. Take some vertical and off center pictures 4. Get down/up to their level 5. Lock in the focus Pay attention to the lighting Even if you are not the one who is taking the picture you should pay attention to this factor. When light hits you from above, its going to create shadows on your face, particularly under the eyes. So you should try to stand behind the sun or away from any lights that may be overhead. If this is unavoidable then tilt your chin up slightly so that you can minimize and shadows that may be casted onto your face. Stand tall The camera isn’t going to know the difference from you standing on top of stilettos or if you’re just on your tippy toes! You can fool the camera into making you appear taller, which will in turn help you look leaner as well. Stand up straight and then slightly turn to the side so that you have one shoulder that will be closer to the camera. Then look straight on towards the lens. These slight changes will make a huge difference! The double chin We have all seen it. We have all dreaded it. Time to DITCH IT! The biggest issue in creating a double chin is having the picture being taken below your eye level. If you can make sure that the camera will be above this point and then also project your chin out a little farther than you normally would, then you can be rid of the double chin disaster! Become a Picture Director Have fun with it and learn from your mistakes! This way when you are at an important event, whether you are the one taking the picture of behind the flash, everything will be Picture Perfect!
