“The princess is coming!” the girls exclaimed as they watched Cinderella’s carriage come down the hill. “Let me see! Let me see!” cried Emma, who had arrived at the girls school only a few days before. “I want to see the princess!” “Don’t worry, you’ll get to see her,” replied Claire, who was the oldest. “Cinderella is coming to see us.” Sure enough, the fancy coach came to a stop outside the school. It was so close to the window that Emma could see the jewels on the horses’ bridles sparkling in the sun.

Outside, the royal trumpeters blared a fanfare announcing Cinderella’s arrival. “Quickly, girls, gather around,” said the headmistress of the school. She scurried to the door and opened it wide. “Welcome, Your Highness!” the headmistress exclaimed. She nodded at the little girls, who all curtsied.

Oh, Princess Cinderella!” the girls shouted with excitement. “But what will we wear?” blurted a little girl named Annabelle, looking at her worn dress. Cinderella smiled. “Why the dresses I am having made for each of you, of course! And you shall have new shoes and gloves as well!”

For the next few days, the girls talked about nothing but the party. “Do you think my dress will be blue to match my eyes?” asked Claire. “I hope there will be lots of candy to eat!” said Annabelle. The headmistress decided her girls needed a distraction. “It’s a lovely day,” she announced. “Let’s get out in the fresh air and have a picnic.” They climbed the hill and spread blankets in the meadow near the royal estate. While the other girls ran and played, Emma gazed at the castle. “I can’t wait to see what it looks like inside,” she said to herself. “It must be the most wonderful place in the world.”

Without thinking, Emma slipped behind the seamstresses and followed them straight through the courtyard and right into the castle.

Cinderella welcomed the seamstresses warmly, then led them up a sweeping staircase. Meanwhile, Emma ducked behind a gold velvet curtain. From her hiding place, she could see huge chandeliers sparkling overhead and bouquets of exquisite flowers decorating every corner. “It’s like something out of a dream,” Emma whispered.
