When the bells to the Jolie Bakery jingled, Claire, the baker’s daughter, looked up from behind the counter. “Bonjour, Belle!” Claire sang out. “I was hoping you might stop by today.” Belle gave her young friend a warm smile and set down the stack of books she was carrying. “Mmmm,” Belle said, inhaling deeply, “and just in time for some fresh chocolate croissants, I see!” Claire chose a pastry for each of them and brought the plates over to a little table in the corner.

Claire nodded as they went to the back room to get the day’s bread deliveries ready. “Sometimes I can think of a beginning to a story, but not an end. And sometimes I can come up with an end, but not a beginning. And sometimes, all I can think of is the middle! I don’t have a very good imagination,” she admitted. Claire’s father overheard them. “Mon cher,” he said, “do not worry so much about imagination. Concentrate on baking bread. Being able to feed people—now that’s a useful skill.” “Oui, Papa,” said Claire quietly. Belle offered to help Claire deliver the baked goods.

As they left the shop, Belle asked the little girl what was the matter. “Everyone in our village is good at something—except for me,” Claire blurted out.
