With the end of the golf season fast approaching, I would like to personally thank everyone for a great 2019. Your patronage, tournament participation and support of the Gosser Golf Course and Lakeview Grille is paramount to the success of our operation. I hope to continue the programs we offered this year and build upon the momentum. The golf course will remain open as long as there is not snow covering the greens.

We’ll spend about two to three hours on the lake (weather permitting) and make a stop for lunch. Basic swimming ability is recommended for all kayaking programs. Ride the scenic Hakkoda Ropeway cable car to start the hike. After the hike you’ll have a chance to soak in one of Iwate Prefecture’s most popular natural hot spring with beautiful outdoor grotto pools as well as indoor facilities. Admission to the Matsukawa Onsen is included. Tattoos are allowed, swimwear is not.

Saturday–Sunday, Nov. 16–17 Departs at 7 a.m. on Saturday Returns at 4 p.m. on Sunday $70 per person ⅼ $50 R4R price Ages 18+ The beauty of the Hakkoda Mountains in October must be experienced! This hike starts at the Sukayu Hot Springs Resort and takes you up to a rustic mountain hut where you’ll spend the night. Weather permitting, enjoy a short hike to the summit of Mt. Odake (1,564 meters), the tallest peak in the range, with a volcanic crater at its top. This hike is between 7–10 kilometers. There is a mandatory pretrip brieng at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Outdoor Recreation Center.

The water is 38–40 degrees Celsius and is rich in iron and other minerals. There are no available facilities in the area. Swimwear and sandals are required in the pools and tattoos are allowed.

Saturday, Nov. 16 ⅼ 7 a.m.–5 p.m. $25 per person Ages 18+ For this Hot Springs Club adventure, Outdoor Recreation is traveling to the western side of the Aomori Prefecture, where the rocky coastline of Japan rises up from the sea. This open-air bath is famous for its sodium and iron content. It’s the perfect location to soak adjacent to the sea, which occasionally crashes against the rocks so powerfully that hot spring visitors are showered by sea water. Birthday suits and awesome attitudes are welcome on this trip! Tattoos and swimwear are not permitted.

What is your favorite Misawa Outdoor Recreation memory?

I have only been here for about a year and a half, but there are already so many great memories, from scuba trips, to summiting mountains, and jumping from planes over Tokyo. But what northern Japan experience would be complete without skiing or snowboarding the best conditions on Earth? Last February I had the opportunity to spend some time in the mountains teaching backcountry skiing and avalanche rescue. It literally snowed nine feet in two weeks, a ski bum’s dream! One day in particular, I woke up in a snow cave to a foot and a half of fresh snow and clear blue skies, it was the perfect break in the weather we had been waiting for. We quickly gathered our gear, boiled water for a hot breakfast, and began climbing to the summit of Mt. Yotei (a dormant volcano where we were training). A few hours and many laughs later, we were standing on top of the world with crystal clear views of Japan, all the way to the ocean in every direction! Cheers of excitement echoed off the volcanic rim, as we skied down into the caldera and enjoyed the deepest, lightest snow I have ever skied. I remember standing deep inside the crater, chest deep in snow, with a huge smile on my face thinking, “I’m skiing inside of a volcano right now… who else gets to do this for work?" Out of a thousand memories I have made so far, that is truly one I will carry with me for the rest of my life!
