If you're looking for a fun, new tness challenge and think you have what it takes, you can still sign up at the Outdoor Recreation Center. Reach your tness goals or just challenge your friends to a race against the calendar. Sign up and track your laps in the pool as you compete in this base-wide, yearlong race. Trophies will be awarded to the rst three nishers. All of the nishers will take home congratulatory T-shirts and bragging rights. If you think you can swim farther than anyone else on base, hit that 50 and keep on swimming.

Additional trophies will be awarded to the three competitors who swim the farthest over the course of 2020.

Submit your original English language haiku from Sunday, March 1 until Sunday, March 15 to the Overstreet Memorial Library. The entry form will be available at the library and at https://35fss.com/overstreet-memorial-library/ on Sunday, March 1.

WHAT IS A HAIKU? A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. A haiku uses just a few words to capture a moment and create a picture in the reader’s mind.

CONTEST RULES • Haiku must be original and in English.

• Each applicant may submit up to TWO haiku poems.

• Haiku must be three lines of 17 syllables – ve syllables in the rst line, seven syllables in the second line and ve syllables in the third line.

• Do not title your haiku.

• Write your haiku in clear, legible print.

Just do it! If it is something personal like a card, photograph or memento, maybe you can keep it, but nd a place for it. Do not just stuff it back in a drawer.

When reorganizing a space, try to ensure that everything is accessible and looks appealing. Having a ton of junk amassed all over the place or jammed in a drawer are both equally useless, so organize things in a way that makes sense, even for other members of the household. If you really do need to pack something away, such as holiday decorations, label everything and store it in something that stacks easily. Having a house or space that looks appealing is simply a way to make a space inviting, and you can augment that feeling with fresh scents or candles. Every time you enter that spruced up room, a part of you will feel relieved and others will feel welcome.

Tidying the home, office or car does not have to be a herculean task. Pick a place and don’t worry about the idea that it all has to get done right away. Do what you can, feel good about what has been accomplished, and take a break every once in a while. After all, what good is cleaning the home if you can’t sit down and enjoy it for a few minutes? PARTICIPATE - With winter ending in a few weeks, I would like to invite everyone that has golfed in the past or has ever thought about giving it a try, to participate in any of the golf programs offered in 2020. We are going to have programs for every level of expertise, from scratch handicappers to beginners. This year’s programs will include Get Golf Ready, Kids Drive FREE, Intramurals and Junior Golf. In addition, there will be weekly nine-hole Scramble & Skins events throughout the golf season. Tournaments this year will include a two-person 6/6/6 Tournament, Par 3 Tournament and a fall Two-Person Scramble. Another event this year will be a Couple's 9 Hole Golf series that will run throughout the summer on Tuesday evenings. This is a good way to get your signicant other involved. he golf course provides FREE loaner skis and snowshoes for anyone who would like to enjoy the course during the winter months. The equipment is kept in the Starter Shack with the red roof, which is on the right as you walk from the parking lot toward the Lakeview Grille.

When the snow is deep enough, cross-country ski trails will be groomed and maintained. Please stay on or near the trails to avoid damaging the putting greens. For more information, visit the Pro Shop.

We can assist with the whole process and provide advice.

What is a JCI?

Japanese Compulsory Insurance or JCI is a mandatory, government regulated safety inspection required for all vehicles registered in Japan and it must be renewed every two years. The Pit Stop Garage can do this inspection, along with the requisite paperwork and registration updates. JCI inspections are very thorough, and may or may not require repairs on inspected vehicles. To allow time for repairs, inspections should be scheduled a minimum of two weeks to one month prior to the date of expiration listed on the vehicle’s title.

Where Should I Go?

The Misawa Auto Complex’s Pit Stop Garage performs a full JCI inspection from start to nish. Misawa is the only base in Japan that performs JCI inspections on site. The Pit Stop Garage is licensed through the government of Japan to perform JCI inspections and they are not required to take the vehicles to the Land and Transportation Office (LTO). The JCI inspector comes to us, collects the JCI fee in yen and completes your paperwork for renewal. Misawa Auto Complex makes the JCI process simple— you'll never need to leave base, from the initial inspection to picking up your new, updated title and sticker.

PIT ST P GARAGE JCI Procedure

We thoroughly inspect the vehicle to nd any discrepancies that would cause the system to fail. Once the inspection is complete, if there are any problems, the Pit Stop Garage will obtain estimates on the cost of the parts from stores in the local area. Once the parts store estimates are calculated, we notify you of the cost. Customers pay in advance for parts needed so that the Pit Stop Garage can order and replace the part. A second appointment is then scheduled to replace the parts that aren't functioning properly. Once the vehicle is repaired, the yen portion of the bill is totalled and paid by the customer. After the JCI is completed, a temporary JCI sticker is given with a copy of the JCI policy. A permanent JCI sticker and your new title will be available at the Pit Stop Garage the Friday following the JCI inspection.

The Testing Process

The JCI inspection tests the following areas: • Exterior - the vehicle must meet Japanese exterior regulations and not have illegal exterior modications, such as extreme body kits that increase the exterior dimensions • Wheel Alignment - the vehicle’s wheels must be in-line and able to turn correctly • Speedometer - the vehicle’s speedometer must be accurate • Headlights - the vehicle’s headlights must be correctly placed and aligned • Brakes - the vehicle’s brakes must work correctly • Exhaust Gas/Muffler - tests carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions along with exhaust noise levels • Undercarriage - inspects suspension parts and checks for rust, which is common here in Misawa *Should a car not meet any of the test standards, repairs must be made before passing the JCI inspection.

What is your favorite part about working at the Auto Complex?

My favorite part about working at the Auto Complex is the connections and relationships that I have built through our community. People come and go being on a military base, but the people you meet along the way teach you a lot and help you grow as a person. Being the focal point for car information at this base is important for those new people who are PSC-ing in to get up to speed on how it works in Japan for repairs as opposed to going off base and having language barrier issues. It is great to be that place where we can help people out to the best of our abilities.

What do you wish the Misawa community knew about your programs?

The Misawa community should know that our Pit Stop Garage facility has the ability to complete the whole JCI process from start to ďƒžnish and the vehicle never leaves the base.

What is your best Auto Complex memory?

My best Auto Complex memory was to see how great the 2018 International Motor Show was and how everything came together. I believe that we really strengthened our bond with our Japanese community.

Truly my most memorable experience was when I recently lost my daughter. The love and support that I received from the Arts & Crafts team, Force Support Squadron, and the entire Misawa community was amazing. The Lord and this amazing community was the only thing that has gotten me through this diďŹƒcult time. I don’t have the words to say how grateful I am for all the love and support.
